Keeping Standards up-to-date

Standards are living documents which reflect progress in science, technology and
systems. To maintain their currency, all Standards are periodically reviewed, and
new editions are published. Between editions, amendments may be issued.
Standards may also be withdrawn. It is important that readers assure themselves
they are using a current Standard, which should include any amendments which
may have been published since the Standard was purchased.
Detailed information about Standards can be found by visiting the Standards Web
Shop at www.standards.com.au and looking up the relevant Standard in the on-line
catalogue.
Alternatively, the printed Catalogue provides information current at 1 January each
year, and the monthly magazine, The Global Standard, has a full listing of revisions
and amendments published each month.
Australian StandardsTM and other products and services developed by Standards
Australia are published and distributed under contract by SAI Global, which
operates the Standards Web Shop.
We also welcome suggestions for improvement in our Standards, and especially
encourage readers to notify us immediately of any apparent inaccuracies or
ambiguities. Contact us via email at mail@standards.org.au, or write to the Chief
Executive, Standards Australia, GPO Box 476, Sydney, NSW 2001.

NOTES:
i)
Maximum floor joist spans supporting roof loads are based on the support of a maximum total sheet roof, framing and ceiling mass of 40 kg/m2 , maximum total tile
roof, framing and ceiling mass of 90 kg/m2 and a maximum flooring mass of 40 kg/m2.
ii)
A Roof Load Width of 0 shall be used for floor joist not supporting roof loads.
iii)
The sizes given in this table are not suitable where heavy point loads, except those allowed by Clause 4.3.2.4, are supported within the joist span.
iv)
For the lower storey of two storey construction, floor joists shall not support roof or upper floor loads within their span.
v)
Where the ends of joist do not support roof loads, the joist may cantilever 25% of the allowable single span for size used, except that the cantilever shall not exceed
50% of the actual backspan.
vi)
Joists crippled over supports shall be considered as single span joists. Refer Clause 2.7.5.4.
vii) Where joist size D/B > 4 restraint may be required. Refer Clause 4.2.2.3.
viii) For design parameters refer to Figure 4.9.

NOTES
i)
Maximum roof load widths are based on the support of a maximum total sheet roof, framing and ceiling mass of 40 kg/m 2. and a maximum tile roof, framing and
ceiling mass of 90 kg/m2. For guidance on roof and ceiling mass refer to Appendix B.
ii)
Studs for internal non-loadbearing bracing walls and partitions (not carrying roof loads) shall be as per Clause 6.3.5.
iii)
Edge distances for some sheet bracing materials may require a minimum stud width of 45 mm for joining sheets.
iv)
For gable or skillion end studs (not supporting roof loads) refer Clause 6.3.2.5.
v)
Large stud sizes may be made up by vertical nail lamination as per Clause 2.4.
vi)
For design parameters refer to Figure 6.12.
vii) All stud walls shall be nogged at not greater than 1350 mm centres.
viii) Where studs are used for tie-down, the maximum tension load that can be imparted to the stud is 8.5kN per stud or laminate where they are nail laminated.

and ceiling mass of 90 kg/m2. For guidance on roof and ceiling mass refer to Appendix B.
ii)
Where jamb studs are required to support lintels that in turn support concentrated loads, additional jamb studs may be required - refer Clause 6.3.2.3.
iii)
A secondary jamb stud may form part of the total number of common studs required at the side of the opening.
iv)
Multiple jamb studs shall be nailed together as per Clause 2.4.
v)
For design parameters refer to Figure 6.14.
vi)
Not to be notched except as per Clause 6.2.1.4.

NOTES
i)
Maximum Roof Load Widths are based on the support of a maximum total sheet roof, framing and ceiling mass of 40 kg/m2 and a maximum total tile roof, framing
and ceiling mass of 90 kg/m2. For guidance on roof and ceiling mass refer to Appendix B.
ii)
Studs for internal non-loadbearing bracing walls and partitions (not carrying roof loads) shall be as per Clause 6.3.5.
iii)
Edge distances for some sheet bracing materials may require a minimum stud width of 45 mm for joining sheets.
iv)
Jamb studs for opening in internal load bearing walls shall be as per Table 10.
v)
Large stud sizes may be made up by vertical nail lamination as per Clause 2.4.
vi)
For design parameters refer to Figure 6.1.4.

and ceiling mass of 90 kg/m2. For guidance on roof and ceiling mass refer to Appendix B.
ii)
Studs for internal non-loadbearing bracing walls and partitions (not carrying roof loads) shall be as per Clause 6.3.5.
iii)
Edge distances for some sheet bracing materials may require a minimum stud width of 45 mm for joining sheets.
iv)
Jamb studs for opening in internal load bearing walls shall be as per Table 11.
v)
Large stud sizes may be made up by vertical nail lamination as per Clause 2.4.
vi)
For design parameters refer to Figure 6.15.
vii) Where roof loads are supported only on studs supporting concentrated loads, posts or jamb studs, the internal walls can be classified as non-loadbearing walls.
Refer Clause 6.3.5.
viii) Notches for diagonal braces shall be as per Clause 6.2.1.4.
ix)
Where studs are used for tie-down, the maximum tension load that can be imparted to the stud is 8.5kN per stud or laminate where they are nail laminated.

NOTES:
i)
Maximum roof load widths are based on the support of a maximum total sheet roof, framing and ceiling mass of 40 kg/m2. For guidance on roof and ceiling mass
refer to Appendix B.
ii)
Where rafters or trusses are supported directly over studs or within 1.5 times the thickness of the top plate from the studs the top plate may be a minimum 35 mm
deep.
iii)
Where plates support concentrated loads such as roof beams, struts, strutting beams, hanging beams, counter beams, combined strutting/hanging beams or girder
trusses etc., the load shall be supported directly over a stud(s) designed to carry the load or the plate stiffened in accordance with Clause 6.2.2.3.
iv)
Plates may be trenched up to a maximum of 3 mm for studs.
v)
Multiple plates shall be nailed together as per Clause 2.5.
vi)
For design parameters refer to Figure 6.19.
vii) Where wind uplift forces on rafters or trusses are taken to the substructure, bypassing the top plate, the top plate size may be determined using the tie-down spacing
of 0 in the table.

NOTES:
i)
Maximum Lintel Spans are based on the support of a maximum total sheet roof, framing and ceiling mass of 40 kg/m 2. For guidance on roof and ceiling mass refer
to Appendix B.
ii)
For lintels supporting concentrated loads refer Table 20.
iii)
Lintels to internal wall openings supporting ceiling joist only shall be sized as hanging beams.
iv)
Lintels in gable or skillion end walls not supporting roof loads shall be determined as per Clause 6.3.6.3.
v)
Minimum bearing length = 35 mm at end supports. Subscript values indicate the minimum additional bearing length where required to be greater than 35 mm.
vi)
Multiple members shall be nailed together as per Clause 2.3.
vii) For design parameters refer to Figure 6.20.
viii) Lintels must be used in conjunction with top plates, ledgers and head trimmers.
ix)
When lintels are used to their maximum design limits, deflections of up to 10 mm (deadload) or 15mm (live load) may be expected.

Maximum Lintel Spans are based on the support of a maximum total sheet roof, framing and ceiling mass of 40 kg/m2. For guidance on roof and ceiling mass refer
to Appendix B.
ii)
For lintels supporting hanging beams, the area supported shall be taken as one half of the ceiling area supported by the lintel and the size determined from the sheet
roof section.
iii)
Minimum bearing length = 35 mm at end supports. Subscript values indicate the minimum additional bearing length where required to be greater than 35 mm.
iv)
Multiple members nailed together as per Clause 2.3.
v)
For roof area supported refer Clause 2.6.5.
vi)
Lintels must be used in conjunction with top plates, ledgers and head trimmers.
vii) When lintels are used to their maximun design limits, deflections of up to 10 mm (deadload) or 15mm (live load) may be expected.
viii) The roof area supported by the lintel should only be that proportion of roof area contributing to the concentrated load on the lintel, ie the roof area input for a lintel
supporting a strutting beam should be proportioned according to the area distributed to either end of the strutting beam.

NOTES:
i)
Maximum Lintel Spans are based on the support of a maximum total tile roof, framing and ceiling mass of 90 kg/m2. For guidance on roof and ceiling mass refer to
Appendix B.

NOTES:
i)
Maximum spans are based on the support of a maximum sheet roof mass of 20 kg/m2 plus a total ceiling mass of 12 kg/m2 (including ceiling
joists)and a maximum tile roof mass of 60 kg/m2 plus a total ceiling mass of 12 kg/m2 . For guidance on roof and ceiling mass refer to Appendix B.
ii)
Where the depth to breadth ratio exceeds 3:1, G.I. strapping or similar restraint is to be provided to the top edge of the beam at beam ends. Refer to
Clause 7.2.26.
iii)
Beam ends may be chamfered to a minimum depth of 100 mm or 1/3 of the beam depth, whichever is greater.
iv)
Where hanging beam spans are not the same each side of the strutting/counter beam, the average of the spans may be used.
v)
Minimum bearing length = 70 mm at end supports.
vi)
Multiple members nailed together as per Clause 2.3.
vii) For design parameters refer to Figure 7.22.

NOTES:
i)
Maximum spans are based on the support of roof mass only for a coupled roof and the combined roof plus ceiling mass for a cathedral roof. For guidance on roof
and ceiling mass refer to Appendix B.
ii)
Allowable overhangs are based on a maximum depth of birdsmouth of D/3. Refer Figure 7.28.
iii)
Where rafters are not birdsmouthed, the allowable overhang may be increased to 30% of the allowable single span for that member. Overhang shall not exceed
50% of actual backspan.
iv)
Overhang limits do not apply where rafter ends are tied back to wall frame.
v)
Overhang limits are only applicable where rafter ends are supported by a structural fascia board. Refer to Clause 7.3.13.2.
vi)
Multiple members shall be nailed together as per Clause 2.3.
vii) For design parameters refer to Figures 7.26 and 7.27.

NOTES:
i)
Maximum Bearer Spans are based on the support of a maximum total sheet roof, framing and ceiling mass of 40 kg/m2 , a maximum total tile roof, framing and
ceiling mass of 90 kg/m2 and a maximum flooring mass of 40 kg/m2 . For guidance on roof and ceiling mass refer to Appendix B.
ii)
Where the ends of bearers do not support roof loads, the bearers may cantilever 25% of the allowable single span for size used except that the cantilevers are not to
be greater than 50% of the actual backspan.
iii)
Minimum bearing length = 50 mm at end supports and 100 mm at internal supports for continuous spans.
iv)
Multiple members shall be nailed together as per Clause 2.3.
v)
For design parameters refer to Figure 4.6(b).

NOTES:
i)
Maximum Roof Load Widths are based on the support of a maximum total sheet roof, framing and ceiling mass of 40 kg/m2 , a maximum total tile roof, framing and
ceiling mass of 90 kg/m2 and a maximum flooring mass of 40 kg/m2. For guidance on roof and ceiling mass refer to Appendix B.
ii)
Studs for internal non-loadbearing bracing walls and partitions (not carrying roof or floor loads) shall be as per Clause 6.3.5.
iii)
Edge distances for some sheet bracing materials may require a minimum stud width of 45 mm for joining sheets.
iv)
For gable or skillion end studs (not supporting floor or roof loads) refer Clause 6.3.2.5.
v)
Large stud sizes may be made up by vertical nail lamination as per Clause 2.4.
vi)
For design parameters refer to Figure 6.12.
vii) All stud walls shall be nogged at not more than 1350 mm centres.

NOTES:
i)
Maximum Roof Load Widths are based on the support of a maximum total sheet roof, framing and ceiling mass of 40 kg/m2 , a maximum total tile roof, framing and
ceiling mass of 90 kg/m2 and a maximum flooring mass of 40 kg/m2. For guidance on roof and ceiling mass refer to Appendix B.
ii)
Studs for internal non-loadbearing bracing walls and partitions (not carrying roof or floor loads) shall be as per Clause 6.3.5.
iii)
Edge distances for some sheet bracing materials may require a minimum stud width of 45 mm for joining sheets.
iv)
For gable or skillion end studs (not supporting floor or roof loads) refer Clause 6.3.2.5.
v)
Large stud sizes may be made up by vertical nail lamination as per Clause 2.4.
vi)
For design parameters refer to Figure 6.12.
vii) All stud walls shall be nogged at not more than 1350 mm centres.
viii) Where studs are used for tie-down, the maximum tension load that can be imparted to the stud is 8.5kN per stud or laminate where they are nail laminated.

NOTES:
i)
Maximum Roof Load Widths are based on the support of a maximum total sheet roof, framing and ceiling mass of 40 kg/m2 , a maximum total tile roof, framing and
ceiling mass of 90 kg/m2 and a maximum flooring mass of 40 kg/m2. For guidance on roof and ceiling mass refer to Appendix B.
ii)
Where floor joists are supported directly over studs or within 1.5 times the thickness of the top plate from the stud, the top plate may be a minimum of 35 mm deep.
iii)
Where plates support concentrated floor loads, the load shall be supported directly over a stud(s) designed to carry the load (refer Tables 38 or 39).
iv)
Plates may be trenched up to a maximum of 3 mm.
v)
Multiple plates shall be nailed together as per Clause 2.5.
