Hempelds Jeremy Morrison led the
Black Knights to their rst Lancaster-
Lebanon League championship since 2008
and the programs ninth overall. Morrison
then guided Hempeld to its rst District
Three Class AAAA nal since 2004 and a
berth in the state tournament. Along the
way the Knights won 10 straight, including
six straight in the postseason.

The Black Knights outelder/pitcher was the
Lancaster-Lebanon League Coaches choice for
the All-League outeld after the junior batted
.436 in the regular season and had an on-base
percentage of .551. Peterson was even better
in the postseason. Against top competition
in league and district playoffs, he hit
.526 (10 for 19) with ve RBIs and three
runs scored. He also went 3-0 with
two complete-game shutouts. Over 22
innings he surrendered just two earned
runs for an ERA of 0.81, struck out 28
and yielded only 11 hits.

PIAA playofs in 2013, Zach Cook coached the team to
a 7-2 record and a spot in the District Three fnals. The
RaidersAdam Bahney and Galen McNaughton fnished
second and third in the league singles tournament
and won the L-L Class AA doubles
title.
Victor Fissella coached Lancaster
Catholic to an undefeated record in
the section schedule and a Section
Two title. The Crusadersdoubles team of Josh Riley and
Tommy Slotcavage fnished second in districts doubles
and qualifed for the PIAA Championships.

Colin Muraika. Deimler capped
his career with a berth in the state
tournament.
Merrill, a freshman, posted a 12-0
record in the regular season at
the top spot in the Barons lineup.
He advanced to the seminals of
the league tournament and the
quarternals of district singles.
In his 14th season as head coach at
Lampeter-Strasburg, Tim Shoff directed
L-S to the second-best season in school
history, nishing 25-3 overall. Behind the
1-2 pitching punch of senior Courtney
Martin and sophomore Jordan Weaver
who combined for 10 shutouts and an
opponents batting average of .085 and
solid fundamentals at the plate and in the
eld, the Pioneers swept to the Section
Three championship with a 15-1 record,
their rst title since winning back-to-
back in 2006-07 and their third overall.
They then nailed down the league championship, defeating
Donegal 7-5 in the title game, winning their rst league
crown since 2007 and second overall.

Penn Manor
Dawson Funk is so good at all facets of volleyball that
his coach, Chris Telesco, was puzzled at which position
he should play. Telesco could have played him at outside
hitter, where he could swing away for kills. Or maybe
middle hitter, where he could block (and swing). Then there
was setter, where he could use his skills to put balls in the
right spots for his teammates spikes. Telesco chose setter
because Funk could, and did, set, block and get in a few
swings. Funks well-roundedness stretched to the back row
in coming up with digs and his jump serve was one of the
best in the L-L League.
If some of Penn Manors current volleyball players
become coaches someday, well know why. It would be
traced to Chris Telesco, who is not only coaching his players
to become better players but coaching to make those
players leaders. He has handed his players responsibility
and has taught the players to be role models for the teams
younger players. On top of that, he coached the Comets to
the L-L League title, which came in Penn Manors fourth
match of the season against rival Hempeld. CHRIS TELESCO

Cougars successfully
defended their L-L
Section Two title

appearance in the PIAA Championships,
advancing to the quarternals before
bowing to Springeld-Delco, the second-

Really, Thomas Haines said, you
couldnt beat the view. It is one only
11 other wrestlers in the history
of the Commonwealth had ever
enjoyed, and when he thinks back
now on what it was like on the vic-
tors stand that March day in Her-
shey, he has to admit hes still a
little bit in awe.
Everyone in the Giant Center, it seemed,
was standing. And everyone was applauding
Solancos senior heavyweight.
Just amazing, he said recently.
Winning a single state champion-
ship is a triumph of DNA and dog-
gedness, of time and teamwork,
of mindset and musculature.
But to achieve the
heights Haines achieved
that day to
become one of that
decorated dozen of
Pennsylvania wres-
tlers who have won four
straight PIAA titles that
takes all of the above, for
the entirety of a high school
career.
Think of all the times Haines
might have slipped off track.
Think how often he might have been
done in by injury, complacency or
the vagaries of youth.
Instead he became one Singleted
Sensation, winning not only those
four titles but setting Lancaster-
Lebanon League career records for
victories (174, against ve defeats)
and pins (119). He went 42-0 as a
senior, and lost exactly one match his
last three years.
His was, without question, the n-
est L-L wrestling career ever. Which
is why hes continuing his career at
Ohio State. And why he is a more
than deserving Lancaster Newspa-
pers Male Athlete of the Year.
Its denitely something thats
very hard to do, he said of his
quad-peat. I controlled everything
I could. Everything else just fell into
place, I guess. I denitely had a little
bit of luck.
While that never hurts, those
around him point out that luck is de-
nitely a residue of design in his case.
It seems like Thomas got more
hungry as each year went, said
Ron Miller, who coached Haines in
soccer the last two years, but was an
interested observer of his grappling
exploits as well. Its incredible to
maintain that focus for four years.
Miller, who used Haines rst at
goalie and later as a midelder and
striker, is convinced he could have
excelled at soccer, were that his
sole concentration. He had the speed, size and
strength, as well as a nose for the ball.
But wrestling was always his primary
sport, from a very young age. And he never
wavered in his pursuit of excellence. As Chris
Bentley put it, He was always wanting more.
Bentley owns and operates Renegade
Force, a Shippensburg-based wrestling club.
Once a wrestler at Northern High School and
also a former Army Ranger, he described his
place as being nothing special just a garage
with a single wrestling mat. It has nonetheless
proven attractive to a number of top-notch
wrestlers, including Haines, a regular since
fth grade.
Bentley quickly came to appreciate every-
thing Haines brought to the table. His physical
attributes, sure, but the rest of it as well. His
burning desire to excel. His self-awareness.
His willingness to accept feedback. Something
else, too.
Hes got a great support network with his
family, training partners and everyone whos
part of his life, Bentley said. That adds to his
natural gifts.
It was Haines dad, David, who had rst
gotten Thomas involved in organized wres-
tling, when he was in rst grade. The elder
Haines once wrestled at Penn Manor, and
knew well the challenges and benets of the
sport.
When he started out, Thomas Haines found
himself liking the coaches, as well as the
other kids. I made a lot of friends, he said. I
wanted to keep going back. I wasnt that good
at it, but I kept going back, so eventually I got
good.
By fourth grade he was hanging with the
older kids on the mat. By fth grade he was
beating them. And thats pretty much how it
has been ever since.
In high school, Haines came under the tute-
lage of John Little, Solancos longtime coach.
It proved to be a fruitful, fullling partnership
for both.
His dad, Little said, more or less entrust-
ed me with his livelihood. If you get a kid that
good, usually the parents are so involved its a
negative thing. The parent always wants to
be sitting in the drivers seat, or at least the pas-
sengers side. But his dad said, Hes yours.
Expectations were modest at rst. Haines
goal as a freshman was simply to make
districts. But he started winning once the
postseason began, and never stopped.
That was an eye-opener, David Haines
said.
And then some.

only had one more loss, at the
PowerAde, his junior year, to
Kyle Snyder of Our Lady of Good
Counsel, Owings Mills, Maryland.
Snyder passed on scholastic
competition this year to train at
the Olympic Development Cen-
ter in Colorado. He and Haines
will be roomates at Ohio State.

She hates the cold.
She hates to lose even more.
The rst fact comes from Sarah Helgeson
herself.
The second comes from so many of her
Hempeld coaches, teammates and even op-
ponents and opposing coaches that the nal
tally wore out the calculator.
OK. That last part about the calculator
might not be true.
But Helgeson not
liking to lose is
what is known as
a cold, hard fact.
She hates to
lose, Hemp-
eld head
track coach Curt Rogers said.
She cant stand not winning, said Black
Knights assistant track coach Barb Wolf.
For Sarah, its all about performing at
her best and making the team better, said
Knights eld hockey coach Julianne Bojanic-
Collier. And, she cant stand losing.
Im driven, said Helgeson, who has
been named the Lancaster Newspapers 2014
Female Athlete of the Year.
She beat out Penn Manors Greta Lind-
sley (cross country, track) and Manheim
Townships Emily Mann (tennis, swimming,
lacrosse) in the nal voting among local
sports writers.
Its kind of been that way all my life,
added Helgeson, who will play eld hockey
at Stanford on an athletic scholarship.
And by all her life, she really means it.
There are stories of heated board games
in the Helgeson household that ended when
things got a little out
of control sometimes,
Helgeson said.
There were numer-
ous backyard competi-
tions among family
members that could
have used a referee at
times, she added.
There were aca-
demic pursuits as well.
Helgeson said her goal
was to graduate in the
top 20 in the Class of
2014. I nished 19th,
she said with a
laugh.
She also
was awarded
the prestigious
2013-14 A. Landis
Brackbill Scholar-Ath-
lete Award.
That was huge,
Helgeson said of
receiving that honor,
bestowed annually
to a male and female
athlete who are out-
standing in both sports
and academics by the
Lancaster-Lebanon
League Athletic Direc-
tors Association.
But this (winning
athlete of the year)
might be even bigger,
she added. I really dont know what to say.
Im just. ... Im just ecstatic.
While winning the athletic honor came
as somewhat of a surprise to Helgeson, her
coaches and even opposing coaches
could see it coming.
She very purpose-driven and sets high
expectations for herself and those around
her, Rogers said in an email.
Tenacious would be an excellent word.
Or driven, Wolf said. She has an inner re
in her that you cant coach and you cant
teach.
Quiet. Determined. Goal-oriented. Self-
assured, Bill Bowers, now an assistant and
formerly the head track at Hempeld, wrote
about Helgeson in an email.
Helgeson nished her career unbeaten
dual meets in the 400-meter race. She twice
earned silver medals at states and set the
all-time L-L League record of 55.13 seconds
during a runner-up nish at states in that
event as a sophomore.
Helgeson also clocked the fastest 200-me-
ter time in L-L history when she won the
District Three Class AAA crown in 24.60 in
2012.
Having missed most of the postseason
with a hamstring injury as a junior, Helgeson
blazed back to the top of the pack in her nal
year. She won league titles in both the 200
and 400 and was second in the 100. She went
on to win district titles in the 200 and 400,
then capped her career by taking second in
the 400 in 55.60 and sixth in the 200 in 24.98
at the PIAA Class AAA Championships.
Her athletic future, though, will be on the
eld hockey pitch in Palo Alto, California as
a member of the Cardinal. Helgeson takes
with her 35 goals and 24 assists in her career,
along with a Class AAA state title during her
sophomore season.
Donegal coach Jessica Shellenberger re-
membered a postseason practice the Indians
had with Hempeld.
Sarah received a pass from the backeld
and, with two touches, had received, beat two
defenders and was swiftly heading towards
the circle, Shellenberger said.
That moment sealed it for me that she
was an impressive eld hockey player.
The amount of control, clean footwork and
coordination it took receive, eliminate and
continue to move forward in a tight space
under pressure is a very high skill.

won both events at leagues
and districts this year
to nish out her
scholastic career.
Helgeson received
an athletic
scholarship to
Stanford for eld
hockey.
Simon led the
Little Dutchmen
to a 6-0 record and
the Section Three
title. That was just
the beginning of
an outstanding
postseason that saw
A-C go 9-1 overall
and nish second in
the L-L League meet,
second at districts and seventh at

eld with her speed, but her knowledge
and poise allows her to be more of a
threat because she inspires others to
raise their level of play too.
Bojanic-Collier said she thinks Hel-
gesons brighter days on the eld are
still ahead.
She doesnt have super-rened
skills, yet, but also has only trained
three months out of the year for the last
six years, Bojanic-Collier said of Hel-
geson, who earned four varsity letters
in track, two in basketball and three in
eld hockey at Hempeld.
Training year-round, her skill level
will take off.
Helgeson said shes not sure what
position shell play at Stanford, which
went 16-5 and won its fth NorPac
West title in a row last fall. She played
forward and mideld for the Black
Knights.
I just want to go out and contrib-
ute, Helgeson said. Im hopeful I can
play right away. Id like to. Who wants
to sit on the bench? Id rather be on the
eld.
I want to help them win.
Sounds familiar.
It was a couple of weeks in a row
of, Wow, how is this happening?
Thomas Haines said.
The wows kept coming, every
March. Little continued to dispense
advice, and marveled at how readily
his pupil soaked everything in: Tell him
something once, the older man said,
and right away he would look to imple-
ment it, even in mid-match. It was like
nothing Little had ever seen.
And Haines continued to hone his
craft at Renegade. Sometimes he would
train against formidable kids who were
at or near his age, like East Pennsboros
Zach Nye (now at Virginia) or Chest-
nut Ridges Austin Buttry (bound for
West Point). Sometimes it was against
Bentley. Or maybe Chris Barrick,
once an All-American at Shippensburg
University.
Ive gotten my butt kicked count-
less times up there, Haines said.
But never when it mattered most.
His state medals are now on a shelf
near the door in his bedroom. Most of
the time he just breezes past them, but
every now and then he stops and looks.
And, he said, I just have to smile.
Its been a heck of a ride, thats for
sure.
