Description
The Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) is a high performance, ruggedized, vehicle serial communications
gateway. This device provides multiple vehicle serial communication interfaces to meet the requirements of all Ford
Motor Company vehicles.
The VCM unit is housed in a magnesium enclosure with a tough, protective, plastic cover for the PCMCIA expansion
slot which can, for example, be used for wireless LAN cards or memory expansion.
The VCM device contains five LED status indicators to provide the user with a visual mode of internal VCM, vehicle,
and host device (e. G. NGS Classic's T-Handle, PC, Pocket PC/PDS, and Laptop/IDS) operation.
The VCM also has detachable cables for connection to industry standard high-speed host interfaces as well as to the
vehicle under test.

Application Overview

Integrated Diagnostic Software (IDS) is the next generation diagnostic tool. IDS integrates WDS software modified to
run on an off-the-shelf laptop with the Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) currently used in NGS+ and PDS, and a
new Vehicle Measurement Module (VMM).

Vehicle Diagnostic Connectors

The VCM 16-pin DLC cable is used to connect the VCM to the vehicle. The VCM and VMM connect to the laptop
through the Ethernet-USB Adapter Cable (H406/H416).

Description
DICE (DIagnostic Communication Equipment) is a tool that is used together with VIDA All-in-one software to diagnose
and troubleshoot Volvo vehicles from and including model year 1999. This is a newest Volvo tool replacing well-known
VCT2000 device. It has integrated Bluetooth module, this allows more comfortable work, no more need of cable
connection to PC now!
DICE is connected to the vehicle's OBD diagnostic socket. When connecting to the vehicle, DICE is powered as long
as the battery is charged. Device has a folding hook that is designed for hanging the unit from one of the grab handles
in the vehicle for example.
DICE is equipped with four status LEDs that indicate the status of the software, the USB and Bluetooth

Q: What is CAN and why is it important?
A: CAN stands for Controller Area Network. CAN is a new means of communicating with the can for diagnostics used
by the latest generations of VW, Audi, SEAT, and Skoda vehicles. Unlike the older ISO9141 system which a used a
single K-line for diagnostic communications, the new CAN-Bus system uses a twisted pair of wires with differential
signaling. CAN is considerably faster than ISO-9141 (500 kpbs vs. 10.4 kbps). Both new hardware and new software
are required in order to communicate with cars using CAN for diagnostics.

different hardware, new interfaces are required in order to communicate with a CAN-based car. These are now
available as well. The new HEX-COM+CAN and HEX-USB+CAN interfaces are fully compatible with the new latest
cars which require a direct CAN connection.
