Introduction
We offer a best-in-class solution to just about any surface or subsurface
buoyancy requirement from customers throughout the world. If we cannot
meet a requirement from our extensive range of off-the shelf products, we
apply our experience and engineering expertise to design a new solution.
In addition, with the recent acquisition of a leading firm of naval architects,
we have now added mooring system design to our bespoke product
design capability.
Steel has been the material of choice for surface buoyancy applications
for many decades. We still offer steel buoys to those customers who prefer
them, as detailed overleaf.
However, for more than 20 years, there has been a shift away from the
significant capital and labour costs involved in building, deploying and
maintaining steel products. The growing preference is for modern,
lightweight, low-maintenance forms of plastic buoyancy.
Within the Fendercare Marine group of companies, we have two
designers and manufacturers of plastic buoyancy, both serving a global
customer base.
Australian Commercial Marine (ACM) has a long-established and
market-leading range of mooring and navigational buoys manufactured
from rotationally-moulded polyethylene. They have harnessed a unique
foam sandwich variant of this technology, to offer buoys with outstanding
collision-absorption properties. Others may seek to emulate them, but
there is only one genuine range of ACM buoys.
Hippo Marine are a world-renowned UK-based manufacturer of
elastomer-type buoys, the same technology that they use in foam-filled
fendering solutions. This results in self-fendering surface buoys which are
specifically designed to absorb impacts without either suffering or causing
damage, making them the preferred choice for offshore operations.
We can also introduce Kevlar reinforcement into the elastomer skin of
the products to offer outstanding durability for heavy-duty work.
We have also recently developed a subsurface buoyancy capability in
a product line now being delivered to offshore and governmental
customers worldwide.
Our product range covers four main product areas as detailed overleaf

Pattern Mooring Buoy
Fabricated from 8 mm steel plate and constructed with
watertight compartments (2 for 5th & 6th Class and 4
for the remainder) each with manway and drain plug.
Admiralty pattern mooring buoys are finished with
rubber or timber fendering and life chains.
The central open hawse pipe, with reinforced collars
at each end, allows for a large diameter riser chain
to be lead through the buoy, ensuring all loads are
transmitted directly to the mooring itself and not
to the buoy.

A3-30004 Yacht Mooring Buoy
Hippo yacht mooring buoys are manufactured from a
moulded core of closed cell foam covered in protective
polyurethane elastomer. This makes them virtually
unsinkable, even after suffering severe damage.
The standard range of SB mooring buoys (SB1 SB7) are
recommended for fore and aft mooring systems.
The standard range of SB soft mooring buoys (SB1S
SB5S) are recommended for single buoy mooring
systems. They are identical in construction to the SB
range except for the use of a exible closed-cell foam
which allows greater impact absorption.

Flotation Ofshore Buoys
Other Ofshore Flotation and Protection
Besides the ranges of commonly-requested buoys
listed within this section, we do also design and
manufacture a complete range of floats for hoses,
pipes, ropes and many other applications.
For rope use, we have single and double hawser
designs, all manufactured from the same combination
of extremely durable, high-visibility, self-fendering
materials as our ranges of buoys and fenders, and
which can easily be tailored to guarantee a specific
amount of buoyancy.
Within the hose market, we are able to offer floating
Y-pieces and reducers in either standard or bespoke
configurations. We also design and supply hose floats.
For pipeline installation work, we offer pipelaying
flotation modules, on which more detail can be found
in the sub-surface buoyancy section of
this publication.
And in response to an FPSO operator off West Africa
who brought us the problem of his offloading hose
getting damaged when coming into contact with riser
chain, we developed a moulded protection system
which we are now supplying to others looking to
minimise hose casualties and related downtime.

Flotation Subsurface Buoys
The Materials
As with surface buoyancy, there are two application
dependent material parameters to sub-surface buoyancy:
The foam material which forms the core of the product
The external coating material
Based upon the use to which our products are being
put, and the depths to which they need to be rated, we
select from a number of possible material combinations
to ensure maximum product life and integrity at
minimum cost.
Foams
For shallower depths, we are typically offering either
high-density polyethylene foam or expanded polymer
foam. The significant benefit which both these foams
offer over the polyurethane foam, which most other
manufacturers will offer for these depths, is that the
foams we offer are of a closed cell nature. This means
that if the outer skin of a Hippo shallow water buoy is
breached, our customers can be assured that the result
will not be a rapid and catastrophic absorption of water
followed by failure of the product.
For deepwater applications, we are formulating and
processing our own pure syntactic foam into which we
will then generally introduce moulded macrospheres to
reduce the weight and the ultimate cost of the product.
Subsurface Flotation Materials Overview
External Coatings
There are 3 main material possibilities for encapsulating
the core of Hippo subsurface buoys:
Polyurethane Elastomer is a highly abrasion-resistant,
reinforceable coating which we can either spray-apply or
cast around the foam core. For ultimate durability, this
form of coating can be Kevlar reinforced.
Rotationally-Moulded Polyethylene is a cheaper and more
uniform method of mass-producing a protective shell for
the foam core in applications where the resilience and
flexibility of PU elastomer is not required.
PU Paint is mainly used in applications where the core
material is resilient in itself but requires some level of
protection from UV degradation.
Applications
The primary product applications for these materials are:
Pipeline installation buoys
Modsyn top-up buoys, general subsea installation buoys
Transponder collars
Modular subsea buoys
Distributed buoyancy modules
Submersible/ROV/AUV buoyancy systems

Flotation Subsurface Buoys
Our combination of subsea materials technology and
processes allows us to design and supply products for
many other subsurface applications.
These can be as simple as the pictured transponder
collar. However, the projects we get involved in can
also be as detailed as the consulting, design and
manufacturing we were engaged to perform for the
most complex sets of submersible buoyancy ever
produced, also pictured.
Other areas to which we are applying, or have applied
our expertise, include combined jumper/umbilical
flotation and protection and distributed/riser buoyancy.
For the vast majority of work of this type, there are no
specification tables which we can provide to arrange
standard data into a neat format. This is all about
our customers bringing us their subsea design and
operational challenges and working with us to develop
a technically robust and cost-effective solution to those
challenges in which respect we act as an extension of
their own engineering capabilities.
So the service which we are proposing here is the
application of our materials, our experience and our
expertise to assist our customers in finding the best
possible outcomes to their subsea headaches. We
welcome such headaches, and the opportunity to show
our customers how we can solve them for you.

Flotation Subsurface Buoys
Modsyn top-up buoys, general
subsea installation buoys
Manufactured from the same syntactic foam formulations
as our ranges of larger subsea buoys, Modsyn is the perfect
solution when small, configurable amounts of buoyancy
are required for cable or umbilical support, as ROV trim
buoyancy or as a general-purpose installation tool.
Modsyn does offer a number of operational advantages
over alternative products available in the market:
Easily lashed via the central through-hole
Multiple units can be configured together via two other
lateral through-holes
Flat-sided for easy storage on land and easy use on deck.

Flotation Subsurface Buoys
Modular Subsea Buoys
Wherever there is a requirement to safely moor a
floating offshore structure, it is highly likely that the
mooring system will comprise one or more subsea
mooring buoys.
The principle of these buoys is that the flotation
modules are mounted onto a through-member made
from steel. This steelwork, configured and rated in
accordance with customer requirement, integrates
structurally within the rest of the mooring system,
leaving the flotation units unstressed.
The nature of these modular buoys is that the number
of modules can be adjusted to meet a specific buoyancy
requirement, and also that any damaged module can be
replaced in isolation.
This range of buoys offers net buoyancy from 500kg
to 20t, at depth ratings from 250m down to 3000m.
Bespoke buoys can also be manufactured in larger or
smaller sizes.
The matrix showing all possible combinations of
modules, depth ratings and resulting net buoyancies
would be massive. Underneath you will find line
drawings and basic dimensions of the Mini, Standard,
Large and Maxi ranges. Tell us how much buoyancy you
will require, and to what depth it needs to be rated, and
we will quote you the most cost-effective way to meet
that requirement from amongst these options.

Pipeline Installation Buoys
Proven offshore technology, in which you can trust.
To reduce tensions on both vessel and pipeline during
installation, buoyancy modules are very often fitted.
This can happen either on the laying vessel itself, or on
land if the shore pull system is being used.
Our commitment is to design, manufacture and supply
the best possible solution for your pipelaying buoyancy
requirements, using durable materials which can be
taken onto future projects, and which will require very
little maintenance either during or between projects.
The main features and benefits of Hippos unique
approach to this application are as follows:
Easily and cost-effectively customised to suit specific
project requirements
Extremely durable outer polyurethane elastomer skin
Kevlar-type skin reinforcement available as an option
Various foam densities available depending upon the
depth requirement
Some exclusive foams available, of closed-cell nature,
to eliminate risk of loss of buoyancy due to damage to
the module
