Introduction

From the great importance and status of this book is the extraordinary number of
commentaries that have been written for itreaching well over 100 difference commentaries
over the centuries. Some take the aspect of fiqh, hadeeth, worshipping Allah Subhanahu
waTa'aala etc. Also, even though hundreds of 40 hadeeth collections have been complied
over the years whenever one hears the phrase the 40 hadeeth, they invariably always think of
Nawawis collection. There is no doubt that if these hadeeth are understood properly and
implemented that they will lead the person to Jannah with Allahs permission.

There are many narrations that mention the virtues of collecting 40 hadeeths, but all of them
are weak or fabricated. Imam An-Nawawi mentions this in his books introduction and adds that
the basis for his compiling of this book is the following hadeeths:

_ , , | . - | = =|
Let him who was a witness among you inform him who was absent {Bukhari}
= -| , - , , = - - , _ | - _ = | -
May Allah make radiant the face of someone who has heard what I have said, has
learnt it by heart and has transmitted it as he heard it. {Tirmidhi}

Side Note: It is okay to take a weak hadeeth due to the weakness of the narrator, if there are
other evidences that support it. However, if it has chains of narrators known to fabricate and
forge, then we do not act on it. This is the case in regards to gathering of 40 ahadeeth.

Life of Imam Nawawi
Full Name: Muhyid-Deen Abu Zakariyya Yahya ibn Sharaf An-Nawawi
Birth: 631 AH
Birth Place: Nawa, a small town near Damascus.

He lived in the time when parts of the Muslim Empire and even the Capital, Baghdad were
being sacked by the Mongols. At the same time, people woke up and were able to push the
Mongols back.
He did not come from a family that is known for scholarship. His father was a very righteous
man though. To avoid any trace of Haraam, he would only feed his family from the food that
came from his garden. The Imam was never interested in anything but studying. One time
when he was young, his friends dragged him out of the house and he started crying in regret as
he was missing out on his Quran. He knew how to use his time wisely.
Later on in his life, his father took him to Damascus. He went to a school that provided him
with a small room. His room was filled with books everywhere. He used to attend 12 lectures a
day. That is a total of at least 8 hours if they are 45 minutes long. Additionally, he would need
another 8 hours to study, etc. This is how we see that Allah Subhanahu waTa'aala blessed his
time! Allah Subhanahu waTa'aala blessed him because of his sincerity.
We have holes in our day lets find them and fill them!
He did not get distracted by things of the dunya. He fasted everyday as an adult and only ate
once a day. His continuous fasting wasnt because he thought that it was better than the fast of
Dawud, but because he was really busy. Likewise with marriage. Marriage is sunnah, he used to
say, I do not want to pursue a sunnah and leave out obligatory matters. He used to constantly
read and when he gets tired, he would on his book. In a span of 10 years he was able to acquire
a lifetime of knowledge and began writing books.
Books he wrote:
40 Hadith
RiyaadusSaliheen
Al-Majmua
Ash-SharH: commentary of Sahih Muslim
Al-Adhkaar

Death: At the age of 45
As regards to his worship, ibn Kathir mentions in al-Bidaaya wan-Nihaaya his great devotion to
night prayer and to the recitation of the Quran and the daily remembrances (dhikr), in addition
to his perpetual; fasting as mentioned above. And in this matter let the student of knowledge
ponder-for this is indeed the only route of success for someone who pursues knowledge is that
they must act upon it.

Rules and Requests

Don't Be Stingy Please:
The Prophet (saw) said, Indeed the stingy one is he who doesn't send peace and
blessings upon me when I am mentioned in his presence. (S - Tirmithi)

Imam Nawawi mentioned that the Prophet (SAW) said that if I was going to take anyone as a
khalil, it would be Abu Bakr, but he (SAW) is the Khalil of Allah Subhanahu waTa'aala. This
shows that there are levels of messengers. 5 were chosen to be the top.

They are known as Ulul Azm and they are Nuh, Ibrahim, Isa, Musa and Muhammad (saw).

Prophet Muahmmad (SAW) is the best of creation who is singled out for comprehensive
speech.

_, , | _ | | , - - | _ | , . = _ | = . - _ , .,, ,|
The Prophet (SAW) said, I have been given superiority over the other prophets in six
respects: I have been given words which are concise but comprehensive in meaning, I
have gained victory by terror (in the hearts of enemies), spoils of war have been made
lawful to me, the earth has been made for me clean and a place of worship, I have
been sent to all mankind and the chain of prophethood has culminated on me.
{Muslim}

Why do we not have a problem with the terror part? When good comes forward, it always
terrorizes evil. The US engages in Pysch-ops (Psychological operation), they distribute pictures
of missiles and planes to scare people! This is to avoid conflict. This is a great thing, because
you are limiting casualties.

Be Good to One Another and to Me
The Prophet (saw) said: O you who have declared faith with your tongues, but faith has
not yet entered your hearts! Do not backbite other Muslims or seek our their faults, for
whoever seeks out their faults, Allah will seek out his faults and humiliate him even if he
is in his house. (S - Abu Dawood)

Someone wrote a poem which praised ibn Uthaymeen. But the Shaikh stopped the poet and
said, instead say we will have success as long as we have the book of Allah Subhanahu
waTa'aala. The truth should not be tied to a certain individual, and we do not tie the success of
the deen to an individual.

We have to be careful not to praise people too highly. Nor, should we criticize people to a great
extent.

The Messenger (SAW) saw a man praise another highly, so he said, You are breaking his
back. Rather say that I presume that this person is good in such and such a way.

Imam Shafi: I wish people knew what they knew without mentioning my name.

Who Am I?
I am not a sheikh, so please save that term for those who deserve it and have earned it.
I am a medical doctor and you may call me Dr. if you like.
I am a student of knowledge who maybe slightly ahead of some of you listening today. I
will make mistakes and I will appreciate you gently and privately correcting me,
critiquing me and advising me to help save me from my mistakes and to help me be a
better teacher. You may also call me brother and that is good.
Thank you in advance.

Objectives
To learn about the life of al-Imam an-Nawawi and to derive beneficial lessons from his
life.
To read and understand the meanings of the 42 Ahadeeth found in this famous
collection.
To derive some of the benefits from each Hadeeth.
To briefly learn about the narrator of each Hadeeth.
To constructively seek out ways to implement the lessons of each Hadeeth into our daily
lives.

On the authority of Umar bin Al-Khattab, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah
(saw) say:
"Actions are but by their intention and every man shall have but that which he
intended. Thus he whose migration was for Allah and His messenger, his migration
was for Allah and His messenger, and he whose migration was to achieve some
worldly benefit or to take some woman in marriage, his migration was for that for
which he migrated."

ibnu Ibrahim ibnul Mugheerah ibnu Bardizbah al-Bukhari and Abul Hussein Muslim ibnul
Hajjaaj ibnu Muslim al-Qushayree an-Naysaaboori in their respective collections of
Authentic Ahadeeth which are the most authentic of the authored texts.

o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that most merciful to my people from my people
is Abu Bakr, the most stern in application of Allah (SWT)s religion is Umar, the
most sincere in modesty is Uthman, the most judicious is Ali
o This tells us that every muslim has special quality.
o Abu Bakr was weighed against the whole ummahbecause of the deedsHis
impact on ummah is stronger and bigger than every one else.

The Narrator: U Um ma ar r i ib bn nu ul l K Kh ha at tt ta ab b
And the most stern in matters of Allah is Umar
Often called al-Farooq (the Criterion between good and evil) for his tenacity in seeking
the truth in affairs of religion. The second Caliphate and the most beloved to the
Prophet after Abu Bakr.
Omar's submission to Islam was a conquest, his migration was a victory, his Imamate
(period of rule) was a blessing, I have seen when we were unable to pray at the Kabah
until Umar submitted
Abd Allah ibn Masood
Embraced Islam 5 years before Hijrah.
As Caliph, defeated Persian and Roman Empires extending rule of Islam from Persia to
Egypt but only ruled for about 10years due to being assassinated.
o Umar (RA) used to make a dua that he wants to die in madinah and die as a
shaheed. He did allow some non-muslims to live in Madinah. Among them was a
fire worshipper who was a servant for a Sahabi. It is customary for Muslim
leaders to lead the prayer and Umar would lead the prayer. One day, at the time
of Fajr, the fire worshipper attacked Umar with a poisoned dagger. Umar
succumbed to his wounds.
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that none of you will enter jannah on basis of
your deeds. It will only be the Mercy of Allah (SWT) that will make you enter
jannah.
From Umars sayings, Account yourselves before you are taken to account.
o Today there in no accountability but there is action; on the Day of Judgment
there is only accountability and no action
Narrated ~ 530 Hadeeth.
o Umar was very distinguished by his knowledge. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said
that his knowledge outweighs all the knowledge of other muslims.
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) dreamt that Umar came dragging his clothes behind
him which indicated his knowledge.

An Essential Hadeeth
Abu Ubaid al-Qasim ibnu as-Salaam: There is no hadeeth that is more comprehensive,
richer in meaning, neither more beneficial nor greater in its lessons than this one.
It was a matter of agreement among al-Shaafi'ee, Ahmad, ibn al-Madeeni, Abu Dawood,
al-Bayhaqi, ad-Daraqutni and others that this hadeeth comprises one-fourth, one-third,
or one-half of Islam.
o Understanding this hadeeth is understanding the greatest part of the deen.
Abu Dawood stated, I have written half a million ahadeeth of the Prophet (saw) and
chose from them 4800 for my collection (as-Sunan) and from them there are four that
would suffice any Muslim.
o The Four Ahadeeth of Abu Dawood
1. Deeds are according to intention
2. From the perfection of a person's Islam is his leaving that which does not
concern him.
3. None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for
himself.
4. Halal is clear and Haram is clear ...
All of these ahadeeth are a part of of Imam Nawawis collection.
Deeds are either inner or outward the intention covers the inner aspect of deeds,
whereas action deals with the outward expression. Furthermore, the intention is the
worship of the soul and action is the worship of the limbs.

Niyyah - Definitions
Lexical purpose and objective sought with a level of determination
o Level of determination is the key word
o i.e sleeping late at night and saying that I intend to wake up for fajr.
Islamic/Technical two possibilities in writings:
1. Differentiating one act of worship from another as with the differentiating of
Dhuhr from Fajr
2. Clarifying a specific act of worship as due only to Allah or to someone else
Sometimes we have 3 definitions for each Arabic word. So, the third could be to understood as
the word locally.
Importance of the Intention
People will be sent forth according to their intentions (S Ibn Maajah)
People will be raised up according to their intentions. (S Ibn Maajah)

Intention Goes Beyond the Deed
Ja'far ibnu Hayaan used to say: Indeed, the man achieves with his intention that which
he does not achieve with his deeds.
If the servant becomes ill or travels, his deeds will be written for him as what he used to
do while he was healthy and a resident. (Bukhari)

The Four Types of People
The world is for four kinds of people. (1) One upon whom Allah has bestowed wealth and
knowledge and so he fears his Lord in respect to them, joins the ties of blood relationship
and acknowledges the Rights of Allah on him (and fulfills them); this type will have the
best position (in Jannah). (2) One upon whom Allah has conferred knowledge but no
wealth, and he is sincere in his intention and says: `Had I possessed wealth, I would have
acted like so-and-so.' If that is his intention, his reward is the same as that of the other
(S Tirmithi)

Intention and Wordly Acts
If a man spends upon his family expecting a reward from Allah then it will be counted
for him as a charity. (Agreed)
Mu'aath asked Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, O' Abdullah, how do you recite the Qur'an (in the
night). He replied, I read a portion and then take a break. He then asked Mu'aath how
he read. He replied, I sleep in the first part of the night and then awake to recite what
Allah has written for me. And I hope for the reward from my sleep the same way I hope
for the reward from my qiyaam. (Bukhari)

A Question
Why does a disbeliever spend an eternity in Hellfire if he only lived so many years in
this world, and how can someone accept Islam and, in at least one case, enter into
Jannah forever without even having prayed a single rak'ah? I thought your God was fair.

Another Question
Are you rewarded for that which you do not intend?
Would you be rewarded for coming to this program if you had no specific intention?

The Answer
Abdullah ibn Mas'ood said:
A statement has no benefit unless it is accompanied by an action, and a statement and
action have no benefit unless accompanied by an intention, and these three have no
benefit unless they conform to the Sunnah

The Evidence
Whoever fasts Ramadan with Imaan and seeking its reward will be forgiven all of his
sins, and whoever stands in prayer on Laylatul Qadr with Imaan and seeking its reward
will be forgiven his sins. (Agreed Upon)

Sincerity and Intention Among the Salaf
Ayub as-Sukhtiyaani: To maintain their sincerity in their deeds was harder upon them
(the righteous) then all other deeds.
Sufyaan ath-Thawri:
1. They used to learn the intention for the deed the same way they used to learn the
deed itself.
2. I never attended to something so difficult as my intention, for it was always trying to
change.
Sufyaan ibn 'Uyaynah: One of our scholars said, I have been busy treating two matters
now for 30 years: rooting out my greed for the possessions of others (the dunya) and
making my deeds sincere to Allah alone'.
Al-Suqty: Purifying the deed from defects is more difficult than performing the deed
itself.

Allah will bring their deeds to nothing. Indeed they are from your brothers and they take
from the night (in prayer) as you do, yet they are those who indulged in the forbidden
when they were in seclusion. (Sahih al-Jaami)

The Proper Intention Behind Seeking Knowledge
Imam ibnu Jamaa'ah:
Q- ,-- -='- --=- --- ,-;-- -,~- '-= - J-- = = - -~-- '- ;-- ~-= - --- Q~=
-'--- ;- = -;~ Q- - -- '-- ,--
The good and right intention in seeking knowledge is that you do so seeking Allah's
pleasure, and to act in accordance with it, and to enliven the Shari'ah by it, to enlighten
the soul, to beautify your inner-self, to seek closeness to Allah on the Day of Judgment
and to lend yourself to that with which Allah is pleased.

So Why Are You Here Today?
Are you here out of boredom or entertainment?
Here to look for mistakes and to condemn?
Here to be seen by others?
Here awaiting descent of the sakeenah/mercy?
Here to learn so you can act, get closer to Allah?
Here so that Allah can mention you?
You will get what you intended ....

Why We Study Islam
;--- - --~= _--=- _-'- = Q- ,--- --~ ;--
- , ~-- ;-- J-- V - ,--- J-- ;-- V
Knowledge is only a means whereby we may get closer to Allah and whereby we validate
our humility before Him. And there is no such thing as knowledge without action as a
result of it, nor action without knowledge to guide it.

Hidden Desires in Seeking 'Ilm
The desire for prominence and fame, for superiority over others and status.
The taking of knowledge of the deen as a means to achieve position and fame, to earn
wealth, to have a forum whereby to put down others and to criticize them, the desire
that people look at him and to be the subject of discussion.

Another Story
A young man comes to visit a scholar and asks him to teach him. The scholar, true to his
knowledge, asks the young man why he wants to study. The young man says he wants to
be a mujtahid Imam like Imam Maalik and Ahmad.
Good intention or bad? Answer: BAD.

Back to Your Intention
Way back when you decided you were going to be more serious about Islam why did
you do it? Did you have any intention at all?
One man let his beard grow after his father passed and soon found all the Sunnis giving
him salaam and thought it was cool; one tried to get away from his annoying girlfriend;
another thought it made him look respectable, etc.
Repent and repeat your intention right!

Other Forms of Hidden Desires
That you become busy w/ fard kifaaya (communal obligation) over fard ayn (individual
obligation)
To race to give others a fatwa, to request to give khutbah before you are asked.
Becomes angry with all who differ with him pleased with a large following and avoids
small groups (needs quota to give class)
To think well of yourself and attribute goodness to yourself (among the Muslims).

Types of Migration in Islam:

Al-Hasan al-Basri: Whoever seeks to compete with you in your religion, compete with
him; and whoever competes with you in this world, let him have it.
Ibnul Qayyim: The degree of a servants love for this world and his satisfaction with it

Also on the authority of Umar, who said: One day while we were sitting with the Messenger
of Allah (saw), there appeared before us a man whose clothes were exceedingly white and
whose hair was exceedingly black; no signs of journeying were to be seen on him and none of
us knew him. He walked up and sat down by the Prophet (saw). Resting his knees against his
and placing the palms of his hands on his thighs, he said: "O Muhammad, tell me about
Islam". The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Islam is to testify that there is nothing worthy of
worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayers,
to pay the zakat, to fast in Ramadhan, and to make the pilgrimage to the House if you are
able to do so." He said:"You have spoken rightly", and we were amazed at him asking him and
then saying that he had spoken rightly
Then he said: "Then tell me about Emaan. He said:"It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His
books, His messengers, and the Last Day, and to believe in Qadr, both the good and the evil
thereof." He said:"You have spoken rightly". He said: Then tell me about Ihsaan." He said: "It
is to worship Allah as though you are seeing Him, and while you see Him not yet truly He sees
you". He said: Then tell me about the Hour". He said: The one questioned about it knows no

girl will give birth to her mistress and that you will see the barefooted, naked, destitute
herdsman competing with one another in constructing tall buildings." Then he stood up and
left and I stayed for a time. Then he (saw) said: "O Umar, do you know who the questioner
was?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best". He said: "He was Jibreel (Gabriel), who
came to you to teach you your religion." (Muslim)
Subnarrator: W Wa ak ke ee e' ' i ib bn nu ul l J Ja ar ra aa ah h
Imam Ahmad said about him, My eyes have never seen someone like him. He would
memorize hadeeth well, study fiqh and excel in it - applying cautious abstainment
(wara) and ijtihaad , and he used to never speak against anyone.
He also said, I have never seen anyone comparable to Wakee in knowledge, memory or
gentleness with humility and cautious abstainment (wara).
A scholar from the generation of the Successors (Tabieen) who lived in Kufah [128-197
AH].

From the Life of Wakee' ibnul Jaraah
Yayha ibnu Aktham states, I accompanied Wakee both in travel and in residence, and
he used to fast everyday and to finish the Quran every night.
He narrated from such senior Successors as Sufyaan al-Thawri, al-Amash, ibnu Juraij,
Shubah, al-Awzaee, etc
He took the place of Sufyaan al-Thawri after his death.
Was among the teachers of Imam al-Shaafiee who said, I complained to Wakee of my
poor memory, so he encouraged me to leave disobedience, for knowledge is light, and
the light of Allah is not granted to the heedless sinner.

Beneficial Lessons
1. The importance of asking questions to learning:
{ ;--- V ;-- ,-- J ;-'~'-}
So ask then the people of knowledge if you dont know. {21:7}

Ibn Abaas was asked how he learned so much and he replied,
'- ;-- ~-- : ;-- ~-- ;~ '~-- '--
By an inquisitive tongue and an understanding heart.
2. To ask questions that have benefit and to avoid asking about that which has no
importance (hypoth.)
3. To ask a question, at times even if you know the answer, if you see that it will benefit
those seated.
4. To have manners with the one whom you are asking and to be gentle in your manners
(Nawawi).
5. That Islam is something distinct from Imaan:
Q---;-- Q- ')-- ' Q- '-= ,='- Q---~-- Q- ~-- ,-- ')-- '--= '--
So We brought out from therein the believers. But We found not there any household of
the Muslims except one. {51:35-36}
Thus Islam is outward deeds and Imaan is inward deeds.

Articles of Faith
Belief in Allah His Oneness as regards His Lordship, making worship alone to Him and
believing in His unique Names and Attributes.
Belief in His Angels created from light, have no ability to disobey, serve Him without
tiring/boredom.
Belief in His Books Suhuf Ibrahim, Tawrah, Zaboor, Injil and Quran are the ones that are
known; the only one preserved from error is the last one.
Belief in His Messengers Chosen only by Allah, they deliver His message to mankind
and Jinn.
We are required to believe in all of them and each of their messages as taught to us in
the Quran; we must obey and submit to the guidance of our Messenger who came in
our era Muhammad.
Belief in the Last Day death, resurrection, judgment (scales, questioning, sirat) and
recompense Jannah or Hell, after the Last Day. Evidence for the last day lies in the
innate belief in Justice that every soul holds.
Belief in Qadr Allahs perfect knowledge of what will come and what would come if
things happened differently.
Two levels of awareness of Allah are being discussed in this portion of the hadeeth:
1) To act as if you see Allah in front of you due to such a strong sense of His presence
Mushaahadah (the level of the one who is witnessing).
2) To act knowing that He sees you and knows what is in your heart (lesser degree)
Muraaqabah [the level of the one being observed].
The difference of having the supervisor looking directly over your shoulder vs. knowing
you are on CC security camera.

Beneficial Lessons
The Prophet does not know the Unseen.
Although the timing of the Hour is unknown, it has signs: Major and Minor. He
mentioned two minor signs: that the slave girl would give birth to her master (end of
slavery or disrespect of parents) and that you would see the bare-footed, naked
shepherds competing in the building of tall buildings. Other minor signs in the
neighborhood of 100 loss of trust, increase in wealth, Islam would return to being
strange, wars between Muslims, wars against Muslims, conquest of Jerusalem, Arabia,
Constantinople, Rome etc.
Why is it strange for a shepherd to compete in building a tall building?
Major Signs: Mahdi, Jesus, Dajjal, Yajooj and Majooj, the Beast that shall have the ring
of Sulayman (as) and the staff of Musa (as), soft wind from Yemen, lack of remembrance
of Allah on Earth, sun rising from West.

PILLARS OF ISLAM

On the Authority of Abu Abdur Rehman Abdullah ibn Umar, who said,I heard the Messenger
of Allah say: Islam has been built on five pillars: testifying that there is nothing worthy of
worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the
prayers, paying the zakat, making the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan.
[Bukhari and Muslim]

NARRATOR: ABDULLAH IBN UMAR
The eldest son of Umar ibnul Khattab, one of the great 4 Abdullahs (al-Abaadilah) in
terms of knowledge and the impact on the Ummah. Participated in all battles except
Badr. Avoided the struggle between Ali and Muaawiyah. Last of the Sahabah to die in
Makkah. The four Abdullahs are: Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-Aas; Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr;
Abdullah ibn Umar and Abdullah ibn Abbas.
o Fitnah in Arabic is a process of taking impure metal and sticking it into a fire until
a melting point of a certain impurity and again for the next impurity and so on
until you end up with pure metal. The temperature is raised higher and higher
until purity is left. Those who do not have sincerity they melt off, the ones left
are the purest in iman, sincerity for the sake of Allah swt.
o In the battle between Ali and Muawiyah, only about 100-200 out of 10,000
Sahabah participated in the battle. Thats only 1 to 2 percent. During this time
of fitnah, they sat down.
o The Hadeeth narrated by Abu Bakra where he said, If the time of fitnah
comes to you stay in your house. If someone enters your house, then go into
the deeper part of your house If you are sitting, lie down. If he comes to
harm you, be the better of the son of Adam (meaning, let him kill you).
o Q: You said in times of fitnah to sit down and wait for light. What light are we
waiting for? A: Not the flash light. Nor is it Imam Mahdi as turning everything
around solely because of he himself would make him better than the
Prophet, he will come once everything is set up for him as a final puzzle
piece. Were in a position of hardship, ease will come, part of it is victory,
part of it is clarity, and right now we cant see whats going on. You have to
sit until the picture becomes clear as one of the sisters said Allah swt knows.
Point is dont try and hasten it, e.g. non-Muslims trying to complete Israel
forcing the hand of God as they put it to hasten the return of Jesus. When
you know more youll be more likely to see the light when it comes. One of
the signs of Mahdi is that an army is swallowed up.
o In other words Dont get involved!
When the fitnah hits (i.e. there is darkness), sit until you see a light. Think of
it as a dark
room without any lights, filled with holes.

Ibn Umar was known for his strict adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet. His rulings
had a great influence on the Maaliki school of thought. He is second only to Abu
Hurairah in narrating Hadeeth (2630) and his students include: al-Hasan, al-Zuhri, Naafi,
Saeed ibnal Mussayib, ibn Sireen, etc.
Beneficial Lessons:
Islam has been built upon these five pillars, so whoever rejects anyone of them cannot
be considered a Muslim.
An example is made of a house; just like a house cannot stand without one of its walls,
so cannot Islam.
Mentioned in order of importance as evidenced by the Sunnah sent to Muaath to give
dawah to the people of Yemen, first point tawheed, then salah, then zakah (Agreed
Upon)

Ibn Abbs (RA)said,

When the Prophet (SAW) sent Mudh to the inhabitants of Yemen he said to him, You are
going to a nation from amongst the People of the Book so let the first thing that you call
them to be the Tawhd of Allh [in that they single Him out Alone for worship]. If they learn
this then inform them that Allh has obligated five prayers upon them to be prayed during
the day and night. If they pray then inform them that Allh has obligated upon them the
giving of Zakh from their wealth and property, it is to be taken from the rich and given to
the poor. If they accept this then take it from them but avoid the best and most beloved
property of the people.

The Meaning of Shahadah
There is no deity worthy of worship, except Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger.

Allah root of the word
Aliha to obey, adore something to the point of worship; thus nothing worthy of worship.
Hadeeth of the woman who was looking for her infant/toddler child in the middle of
battle (or after a battle) the two found each other and the child ran to the mother, she
embraced him intensely and began to feed him immediately. The Prophet said look at
that woman, do you think she would ever let that child go to Hell / battle (they all saw
the love in the embrace)? Verily Allah is more merciful to/ loves you than that woman
to her child.
People say that Jesus is all about love and your God and Messenger are about
punishment and battle, etc.
Ar-Rahman: The best attribute is of mercy which entails kindness and forgiveness.
Isa 'Alayhisalaam has 2 phases: 1st life and 2nd life.
o 1
st
phase: He was a gentle and humble man. He was extremely simple.
o 1
st
phase of Rasool (saw): similar to Jesus.
o 2
nd
phase of Rasool (saw) in Madinah as a leader.
o 2
nd
phase of Isa at his second coming by the Christian perspective: He is a
warrior, Last Battle, the actual coming; he will come out of the clouds with
armies of angels.
o 2
nd
life of Isa from a Muslim perspective: he will descend when Muslims are
getting ready to pray fajr.
We dont only want the Love of Allah Subhanahu waTa'aala, we want to go to Jannah
and be saved from hell. Hell: It needs to be tamed with leashes, with 70,000 angels per
leash because otherwise it would devour everything if it was let loose! So dont say you
just want the love of Allah Subhanahu waTa'aala and after hearing the joys of Jannah,
do not say you do not want to be in it.

Meaning of Muhammad is the Messgener of Allah:
1. Obeying what he ordered.
2. Avoiding that which he forbade and disliked.
3. Believing in what he foretold.
4. Defending him from enemies.
5. To not worship Allah except by what he legislated.

[Al A'raaf 7: 157]
Gem: We all have problemsthat is not surprising because we are humans just like the rest of
the world. The only thing which differentiates us from others is our iman. That iman does not
change our genetic code, but it enables us to change our actions!

The Conditions of the Shahaadah:

o The statement laillaha illalah is like a key, you have to have right ridges on the
key to open the door of Jannah. The ridges of the key are following -

1. Knowledge (Ilm) that removes Ignorance
2. Certainty (Yaqeen) that removes Doubt
3. Acceptance (Qubool) that negates Rejection example of Abu Talib
4. Compliance (Inqiyaad) that negates Dissesntion
5. Loyalty (Sidq) that negates Hypocrisy and Dishonesty says the shahaadah honestly,
meaning what he says
6. Sincerity (Ikhlaas) that negates Shirk
Loyalty is the foundation of sincerity.
Im loyal to Allah all the time, but I become sincere before the deed.
Must say the shahaadah only for Allah, not for someone else or some worldly
gain. Those who are born into Islaam need to recheck this. A Muslim cannot be a
Muslim for the sake of his parents or community or friends, etc. It must be
sincerely for Allah alone.
7. Love (Mahabah) for it and those who adhere to it, a love that negates Dislike and
Hatred.
Abi darda passing a street and sees a guy beating the other and he stops him like
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) would do to tell them to stop. The one beating said
that dont you hate him for what he is doing. He said that I hate the sin that he is
doing but as soon as he leaves it he is my brother in Islam.

The Prayer
:=| ., - . ;: =, -v | _
The heart of the matter is Islam and its pillars are the prayer (S Ibn Majah,
Tirmithi)
,, :=| = . | = `=| , , -| , , ., ,, , . - _

Between a man and shirk & kufr is leaving the prayer.
The difference between the one who leaves off the prayer at times and one who has
absolutely abandoned it.
o There is a difference between a person who leaves the prayer at times and a
person who never prays. While we may not use this knowledge it may help us at
times to prevent. A question often asked is if e.g. a person who flakes out on
prayer from time to time is a Muslim or not. Some call them kafir outright. The
idea of the ulema is that he is fasiq (corrupt) but he is not a disbeliever. What do
you do about it? Advice. If there were an Islamic sultan what would he do? He
would get advisors to give him nasiha. It could be that the person not praying is
crazy. What about people who see the example of bad Muslims everywhere but
not of good? They have something of an excuse before they die but they still
owe it to themselves to learn the truth. If a person says outright, I dont think
we should pray he is not Muslim as he is denying both Quran and Sunnah.
What about a person that never, ever prays? Ibn Taymiyyah says that person is
not really a believer. He says if we really believe, what are the actions of the
heart? Hope, fear, trust, love (not duaa, duaa as an actual outward action). If
you sit and think of the magnificence of Allah swt, can you say Im not going to
bow down to Him? Can a person really understand the greatness of Allah swt
and not bow down to Him? Can a person be afraid of Allah swt and not bow
down to Him? If you study these people do they bow down to other things,
submit to other things? Certainly. Example of our lack of knowledge about
Jannah influencing our actions (in some cases i.e. the lack thereof). The Prophet
mentioned many women being in the Hellfire saying itll happen because of
ingratitude to people no matter how much good is done for them, if they find
one thing bad, it is as if no good was done. He did this to clarify their weakness
so they would avoid doing that. What about men? We have so many, where to
begin?
Pray as you have seen me pray. (Agreed)
Meaning of establishing Prayer as opposed to praying.
o Umar ibn al-Khataab said, The amount who perform hajj are few and the riders
many. There are few people who perform hajj properly. Likewise, pray salah
properly.
o Ibn abbasbowing, prostration, reciting with khushoo.
o Qatadah---Stick to and guard its timing, bowing and prostration.

The Zakah
Connection between prayer and alms throughout the Quran as well as the Sunnah
(Hadeeth of Muaath)
Zakaah in Arabic means growth, blessing and purification(from the Arabic dictionary:
Lisaan al-Arab).
Sadaqah comes from the word sidq (loyalty) it is a sign of sincerity of faith on the part
of the person who gives it.
With regard to the Shari definition:
o Zakaah is a means of worshipping Allah by giving that which He has obligated of
different types of zakaah to those who are entitled to them, according to
guidelines in Shariah.
o Saqadah is a means of worshipping Allah by giving money without being made
obligatory in Shariah. The word sadaqah can also be used to refer to obligatory
zakaah.
Some Details of Zakaah
1. Zakaah is obligatory on: gold, silver, crops/fruits, trade goods and livestock.
2. Zakaah requires that one full Hijri year have passed since acquiring the wealth, and that
the wealth meets the minimum threshold (nisaab).
3. Allah has enjoined that zakaah be given to certain types of people, and it is not
permissible to give it to anyone else. They are mentioned:
= | ==| , - | | , , - _ - - | _ . | | _ - _ - | = |`| _ , , ,, |
-| , , = _ ` ,, - ` ,, - -| -| `- - =, ,,.| ,
Alms are for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds); for
those whose hearts have been (recently) reconciled (to Truth); for those In bondage and
In debt; In the cause of Allah. and for the wayfarer: (thus is it) ordained by Allah, and
Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.
[At-Taubah 9:60]
4. Whoever dies and owes Zakaah, his heirs must pay it from his wealth and that takes
precedence over the will and inheritance.
No one who doesnt pay zakah except that he will be branded by plates

The Hajj
Hajj is one of 3 deeds that wipe out all sins.
Whoever comes to this house and does not commit any lewd behavior or any sins, he
shall return the way he was the way he was born. Bukhari.

What are the other two?
- Leaving kufr and entering into Islaam.
- Hijrah for the sake of Allah.

Along with Umrah, it is the Jihad of women.
Aisha asked, Is Jihad incumbent upon women? The Prophet (saw) said, Yes, it is the
Jihad that does not encompass fighting Hajj and Umrah.
It is obligatory upon the one who has the means (health, wealth provisions, permission,
mahram).
Majority of the scholars are of the opinion that one must perform it as soon as the have
the ability, otherwise they are sinful. This is the opinion of the majority of scholars,
except some of the shafiee scholars.
If anyone breaks a bone or becomes lame, he must break his hajj and perform it the
following year. It is supposed to be done quickly!

Ramadan
9
th
month of Hijri calendar; no food, drink or intimacy during the hours from Fajr to
Maghrib.
Prescribed for the nations before Muhammad (saws).
o Insert Ayah from Baqarah Kuteebah Alaykumul Siyam kama kutibah
alalatheena min qableekum.
Protection and shield from the hell-fire
Adh-Dhahabi states, According to the leaders of this Ummah, whoever leaves the fast
of Ramadan without being sick or traveling is worse than a fornicator or an alcoholic. In
fact, they doubt his Islam and they suspect he might be an apostate who seeks to
destroy Islam.

Beneficial Lessons:
The phrase, Islam has been built, is indicative of a complete structure that can neither be
added to nor can anything be taken away. This corresponds well to the verse, This day I have
completed for you your religion.

Hadeeth Four
Theres a small defect in the actual text of the 40 Nawawi. This caused a lot of commentators to
make a small mistake in their commentary. Jamal Zarabozo pointed it out. It is correct in the
English, but the Arabic is a little issue because it gives you the idea of 3 separate 40 day
periods. This created a bit of a misunderstanding and was corrected by later scholars.

On the Authority of Abdullah ibn Masud, who said: the Messenger of Allah , and he is
truthful, the One to be believed narrated to us: Verily the creation of each one of you is
brought together in his mothers abdomen for forty days; then he is a clot of blood during
that period, then a morsel of flesh during the same period, then there is sent to him the Angel
who blows the breath of life into him and who is commanded about four matters:
to write down his provision
His life-span
His Actions, and
Whether he shall be happy or wicked
By Allah, besides which there is nothing worthy of worship, verily one of you behaves like the
people of paradise until there is but an arms length between him and it, and then that which
has been written overtakes him and so he behaves like the people of hell-fire and thus he
enters it; and one of you behaves like the people of hell-fire until there is but an arms length
between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him and so he behaves like
the people of Paradise and thus he enters it.
[Bukhari and Muslim]

Narrator: Abdullah ibn Masood
Sixth person to embrace Islam and his mother was also an early convert to Islam. First to
publicly recite the Quran. Among the early migrants to Abyssinia. Died in Madinah at
nearly 60 years old (32AH).
Narrated about 848 ahadeeth but best known for his knowledge of the Quran, from
whom the Prophet used to encourage people to take it from.
He was given a post in Kufa, Iraq and remained there for some time where he helped to
spread what later became known as the Kufan school of Fiqh which became part of the
Hanafi school of thought.

The Truthful, the One to be Believed
The only Hadeeth in which Ibn Masood opens with this fashion of the reasons offered
is that due to the nature of the content of the Hadeeth, and that it can only be known
through revelation; that he wished to emphasize the fact the Prophet is the Truthful
One and the One to be believed.
o Believe it was the truth even though at the time they couldnt understand it. E.g.
the embryonic stages as described in the Quran could not have been known
without the degree of microscopes available since about the last 50 years.
One day ibn Masood climbed up a tree to get some food and his legs showed and he
had skinny legs. The people started making fun of his legs because they were skinny and
the Prophet said, Indeed, these legs are going to be heavier than the mountain of Uhud
on the Day of Judgment.

Embryonic Stages
Important Note: Most of the knowledge we know about Embryology has been discovered in
the last 50 years. Most of what we know in the very early stages can only be seen using an
electron microscope. This is good to know because it highlights the miracles of the Quran!
Nutfah drop of fluid; established in Quran and Sunnah that both women and men
contribute; scientifically from Day 1 to Day 7 (mixing of egg and sperm to create a zygote
that progresses on to become a blastocyst)

Microscopic Blastocyst
Alaqah: Something that clings; a leech. The period between day 7-21 is most aptly
characterized by clinging: implantation of the blastocyst to the uterine wall with
eventual development of the connecting stalk (cord).

Clinging an early form

Mudghah: Means chewed lump (of flesh); development of somites happen at this stage
(day 21-42) from which the skeleton and muscles will develop.

Day ~ 32-38 Human Life Cycle
Important Stages
Day 1: Fertilization Occurs
Day 6: Embryo implants in the uterus
Day 18: Human heartbeat can be detected
Day 21: Foundations for many organs are apparent
Day 31: Human anatomy (arms, legs, etc.) develops
Day 38: Baby begins moving independently
Day 40: Brain waves can be detected
o Whats amazing is that this information on embryology is from a non-Muslim
website. Day 40 is also the day the Angel implants the soul!
Day 42: EKG and EEG can be done.
Insert Hadeeth in Muslim States that the Angel comes with the soul at 40 or 45 days.
Insert Hadeeth in al-Jame3 al sagheer Indeed the muqtah will stay in the womb of the mother
for 40 nights and then the angel will come to her.
Important fiqh Principle
Using this Hadeeth as a basis, a fetus comes into existence as a life at approximately 40
days, or 6 weeks gestation. Those that supposed the Hadeeth refer to three separate 40
day periods placed that much further at approximately 120 days or 4 months.
o This is also important because the child will make shafa3ah for the parents.
Funeral prayer can thus be prayed for any fetus that has passed 40-45 days or 6 weeks.
o The reason its important to realize its 40 days and not 120 days, it affects the
Fiqh after 40 days its a life and requires janazah. Before 120, under the other
opinion its not considered to be a life.

Is the last part of the Hadeeth Fair?
Armed with our understanding of the intention, this portion of this noble Hadeeth
makes a great deal of sense and is very fair.
Just doing the actions of the people of Paradise does not mean that those deeds were
done for the right reasons or with the right intention.
o About has been written overtakes what happens is Allah swt exposes the
intention of the person. Take for example implementation of Islamic rules for
clothing, so people will dress a certain way because its encouraged, its good,
its forced, its troublesome if they dont. Example of them given a plane ticket
and now we see the real person going from abaya to make up, skirt, etc. Thats
the Qadr, thats what was written, that plane ticket, those actions. (Never miss
the chance to give dawah you never know when or how itll be someones qadr
even if ten years down the line even if say the person you hand material to
throws it away and the one that picks it up is turned to Islam you get the reward
for intention of helping others.).
Beneficial Lessons
The Hadeeth should cause us to reflect on the Majesty and Ability of Allah to create
from such a microscopic source a walking, thinking, acting human being.
To reflect upon the mercy of Allah that he preserves us all throughout this very fragile
state where any one of a million things could go wrong that we can be born.
o Think about how you were the images above not long ago and now you have all
the skills that Allah swt has blessed you with, its miracle we even lived after
coming out of the womb.

The Hadeeth contains in it a treatment for arrogance and pride, for when you remember
your weak and flimsy origins; you have naught except to be humble.
To be calm on the matter of provision for it is written
o Provision includes your spouse and your children, etc.
A reminder to be good to our parents, especially the mother, in whose womb all of the
preceding occurs.
o If your parents are alive and you dont go to Jannah, youre a loser! A real loser!
o The Prophet was in Jannah walking around and he heard someone reciting
Quran. He asked the Angels who is the one reciting the words of Allah in Jannah
and they responded Al-Haarith. He heard that and he said, kathaleekum ul-Birr 3
times. This is because he wasnt a man known for his recitation but for his
dedication to his parents.
o There was a tabiee who is mentioned by name in the Hadeeth, Owais Al-Qarni.
Sahih Muslim Prophet told Umar Ibnul Khattab, There is a man named Owais
from al-Qarn. He had a skin disease and he made Dua for Allah to heal him and
Allah healed him. The man is good to his mother. If you find him, ask him to
make dua for you (Umar ibnul Khattab).

o What could possibly be the status of that man?
It was literally because of his goodness to his mother!
Serve your parents. Sacrifice for them. Take care of them. Make them happy.

A reminder that it is the seal upon our lives that determines much, so not to be too
proud of good that we have done for fear that we might end up upon evil, nor to be
distraught over evil we have done in hopes that Allah will yet guide us to that which is
better. That which we do upon our death is that which will send us forth to our final
abode.
The fear of an evil end kept many of the righteous awake with tears; Sufyan ath-Thawri
said through tears, I fear that I have been written among the wicked in the Preserved
Book, I fear that I will lose my Imaan upon my death-bed; Maalik ibn Dinaar used to
say, Oh Allah you know the inhabitants of hell-fire and the inhabitants of Jannah, so in
what land have you recoded the name of Maalik.
Thus this Hadeeth should cause us to reflect upon the sincerity of our deeds and our
loyalty to Allah.

HADEETH FIVE

On the authority of the Mother of the Believers, Umm Adullah Aisha, who said: The
Messenger of Allah said: He who innovates something in this matter of ours that is not of it
will have it rejected. (Bukhari and Muslim).
And in one version by Muslim it reads: He who does an act which is not in agreement with
our matter will have it rejected.
Narrator: Aisha bint as-Sideeq
The daughter of Abu Bakr, and the favorite wife of the Prophet; he married her when
she was very young and she spent 9 years in his close sompany while she attained
maturity, observing him in many different phases and thus able to relate his habits.
She narrated 2210 Hadeeths and was called upon for several years after the death of
the Prophet to help the companions solve difficult problems. She was a scholar of the
highest standard and had a great many students among the sahabah and the Tabieen.

Beneficial Lessons
The Shariah is complete and needs no additions.
Principle: All acts of worship are forbidden with the exception of those acts performed,
commanded or approved by the prophet.
Principle: All worldly deeds are allowed with the exception of those deeds that are
expressly forbidden in the Quran and Sunnah.
No points for creativity in Islam, only for following.
o You have to have a precedence to go on in regards to religious actions. Tawkifiya
you stop where the Prophet and his Companions stopped, what was enough for
them needs to be enough for you. This hadeeth is about bidah and
understanding the true Sunnah.
The Hadeeth encourages seeking knowledge for how else is one to come to the
evidence to support a deed.
To Comply with Shariah
An act must conform to six parameters:
1. Cause Taraweeh vs. Mawlid
2. Type Sacrifice a cow vs. a horse
3. Amount - Maghrib 3 vs 4; Thikr morning/evening
4. Manner start wudu with feet
5. Time Jumuah prayer on Sunday, Eid on weekend
6. Place Hajj in Arizona
7. Who i.e. who can Sadaqah or Zakaah go to.
Relating to Bidah
Abu Musa was sitting in the masjid and some people were sitting in a circle making thikr and
throwing a rock in the middle. He never saw it before so he didnt say anything and he went to
Abdullah ibn Masoods house and on the way to fajr he told Abdullah ibn Masood about this
incident. Ibn Masood marched over there and told them, You are either more guided than the
Prophet Muhammad or you are upon the clear Misguidance. The person who narrated the
Hadeeth said he saw them making thikr, and then he saw them in the battle of naHrawan. This
is the battle of the khawarij.

Abdullah ibn Abbas, when he met the Khawaarij, said, I dont see one companion of the
Messenger of Allah among you. These people started out doing a small thing and it grew.
Bidah starts small and it grows and grows until it eats away at the person.
There are 2 other dangers to Bidah that we should recognize.

Ibnul Qayyim said there are 6 pitfalls that the Shaytaan tries to get people to fall into.
1. Shirk
2. Bidah i.e. how could throwing a stone into a circle be worse than killing someone?
Because a person will never realize that they are doing something wrong and spreading
it. At least if you commit a major sin (i.e. murder), then you know its wrong and you can
ask for Repentance. With Bidah, you dont usually seek repentance because you dont
see anything wrong.
-- What was enough for the Messenger and his companions should be enough for us as
well.
3. Major Sins leaving the prayer, zina, alcohol, gambling, etc
4. Minor Sins accumalating minor sins might destroy a believer just as a huge fire can be
sustained by small pieces of wood.
5. Temptations and deceptions: Sahytan resorts to corrupt their acts of worship and
obedience, so that he can deprive them of the rewards. For example the missing the
salaah.
6. Uses other people against him to take him away to torture, ridicule, call him to evil,
etc

On the authority of Abu Abdullah Al-Numan ibnu Basheer, who said I heard the
messenger of Allah say:
That which is lawful is clear and that which is unlawful is clear and between the two
of them are ambiguous matters about which not many people know. Thus, he who
avoids doubtful matters clears himself in regard to his religion and his honor, but he
who falls into doubtful matters falls into that which is unlawful, like the shepherd who
pastures around a sanctuary, all but razing therein. Truly ever king has a sanctuary,
and truly Allahs sanctuary is His Prohibitions. Truly in the body there is a morsel of
flesh which if it be whole, all the body is whole and which, if it be diseased, all of it is
diseased. Truly, it is the heart. (Bukhari and Muslim).

Narrator: AnNumaan ibnu Basheer
Born about 8-10 years before the death of the prophet. Was given positions of authority
under the rule of Muaawiyah in the territories of Hums, Syria and Kufa, Iraq. Was killed
in Hums when he was 74.
Narrated 114 hadeeths, 5 of which are agreed upon.
Among his students were Al-Shabi, his servant, and son.
o Sufyan at-Thawri said the people that benefited the least from him were his own
family. Sh. Waleed told Dr. Ali that we often get so absorbed in dawah efforts
and we dont give family their due rights.
Samaak ibn Harb said, By Allah al-Numaan was among the most eloquent speakers I
have ever heard.
Beneficial Lessons
In general, matters of halal and haram are clear.
There are a small number of matters though that are unclear to the majority of people,
and the rule with regards to these is caution (yellow light).
The Hadeeth indicates the honor of knowledge, for the more knowledge a person has,
the smaller the number of unclear issues he shall encounter.
To avoid doubtful matters will clear honor and deen.
Whoever persists upon disliked matters or doubtful matters will no doubt eventually fall
into Haram.
From the effective techniques of teaching is to give an analogy or an example as did the
Prophet here.
The majority of matters are Halal, minority haram.
The heart, in general, directs the body to good or evil.
Indicates the importance of purification of soul/heart.

Signs of the Pure and Healthy Heart (Ibnul Qayyim - Ighaathatul Lahfaan)

1. The person considers himself as belonging to the next world and not to this one. He is a
stranger here looking forward to returning home.
2. The person is ashamed and greatly disappointed any time he disobeys Allah, and he
remains so until he completely repents for that action.
3. If the person misses his daily portion of Qur'anic recitation or thikr, it is heavier upon
him and fills him with more remorse than had he lost his wealth.
4. The person finds a pleasure in worshipping Allah that is greater than any pleasure he
might find in eating or drinking.
5. When the person enters the prayer, his worldly worries and concerns leave
him.(Arihnaa bi haa Ya Bilal)
6. He is stingier with his time than a greedy person is with regards to his wealth. (Hadeeth
about the blessing of free time and five before five)
7. The person is as concerned with his intention and the correctness of the deed as he is
with the actual performance of the deed.
Signs of the Ill Heart:

1. The person feels no pain or discomfort when he commits sins.
2. The person finds pleasure in that which Allah has forbidden and achieves a degree of
rest after completing them.
3. The person is more concerned with insignificant and trivial matters than with heavy
matter (the opposite of 'Uluw al-Himma)
4. The person dislikes the truth and has difficulty submitting to it or accepting it.
(Arrogance)
5. The person finds relaxation among the disobedient sinners and is aggravated when
among the righteous and obedient.
6. The person is overwhelmed with doubts and is affected greatly by misconceptions and
false arguments. He is more attracted to such discussions than he is to the recitation of
the Quran or to the circles of knowledge.
7. The person is not affected by admonition.
o When was the last time that we heard the verse of Hell-fire and passed out?

On the authority of Abu Ruqayyah Tamim ibnu Aws Al-Dari that the Prophet (saws) said:
"Religion is sincerity". We said: "To whom?" He said: "To Allah and His Book, and His
Messenger, and to the leaders of the Muslims and their common folk". (Muslim)

Narrator: Tamim ad-Daari
Accepted Islam in 9 AH and the Prophet mentioned him upon the pulpit in regards to Dajjal.
Lived in Madinah until the death of Uthmaan after which time he moved to Greater Syria
where he died in Palestine in 40 AH. Was known for being a devout worshipper and fluent
reciter of the Quran. Narrated about 18 hadeeth in various books of Hadeeth.
) '--- ;-- ---- Q- ( and those too who have knowledge of the Scripture. {13:43}
Qatadah states that this ayah includes Salmaan al-Farisi, ibn Salaam and Tamim ad-Daari.
o Tamim ad-Daari was on a boat. It crashed and he floated on pieces to the shore.
When he got to the shore, they found this creature on the shore called al-Jassassah. It
asked them some questions and it took them to a cave where a big man was chained
to the wall. The man asked if the prophet of the arabs had come, they replied yes and
he said then my time will soon come.

Naseehah
We need to look at the root of the word because how can we give Naseeha (i.e. advice) to Allah.
Hence, the roots of the word make a big difference on the meaning.

Two roots:
1. To clean, purify or improve something (Honey)
2. To join something together that is scattered or separated (sewing garment) This is
what tawheed is.

Shari definition (according to Lanes Lexicon): Direction to that which is for the good of the
person who is the object, by words or counsel, or sincere or honest conduct, or benevolence
desire for what is good for the person who is the subject.

How does a person give Naseeha to Allah? It needs to be understood as sincerity. You need to
have a pure intention and you need to worship Allah as a unified Lord (i.e. Only One). When you
do this, youre doing it seeking the good from Allah.

To Allah - Vernacular definition of naseeha, i.e. advice, doesnt work in light of hadeeth
on naseeha to Allah swt, as we cant give advice to Allah. How do we understand giving
naseeha to Allah swt? Looking at the second definition what is done with the pieces of a
garment? Theyre being unified. Such is the case with tawheed, unifying worship to
Allah swt, and purifying yourself for the worship of Allah swt with no benefit to Allah
only to us.
To the Book - How do you give naseeha to the Book of Allah?
Believing in all of it. Don not be from amongst those who are able to recite the
Quran beautifully but it does not get past their throats, i.e. doesnt enter their
hearts.
Unifying our belief and understanding of it dont just read the two surahs you
read every time you pray.
Read it as it should be read.
Purify yourself before touching and reciting it.
Calling others to it.
Defend it.
Calling people to respect it.
Prevent if from distortion.
To the Messenger of Allah
Believing what he told us - The Messenger of Allah did not speak his own opinion
(in regards to religion) he was obedient to Allah. [anNajm: 3-4]
Following his sunnah.
Loving him, defending his honor, defending his family.
Beneficial Lessons
This Hadeeth cuts off all the routes to cheating and deception, since the Muslim is required
to always advise another Muslim as to that which is better for him.
o Abu Bakr did not excel or surpass the other Companions because of his fasting or
prayer but because of something in his heart. This is because of his sincerity for Allah
and his sincere love and good for everybody.
o Abu Bakr sincerely loved what was good for the Ummah. The most beloved people
to Allah swt are those who cause others to love Allah swt-Abu Darda.
o Insert Hadeeth and Story about Man buying a horse for 300 dirhams. Jareer looks at
the horse and says your horse is worth more than that, until they reached 800
dirhams. When they asked him, Why he did that it was because he promised the
Prophet he would always give sincere advice to every Muslim.
o Fudayl ibn Iyaad a believer conceals the sins of others and his own sins and advises,
whereas the corrupt person expose their sins and disgraces the person.
o Ibn Mubarak (scholar of hadeeth) was asked whats the best thing we can do. He
replied: best advise you can give is the best thing you can do.

Among the greatest forms of advising is commanding the good and forbidding the evil.
o They asked a scholar, whats the best act we can do and he replied, to give advice for
the sake of Allah.
Important to understand the difference between shaming someone and advising them:
intention, remembering their good, being specific about the shortcoming, advising in private
if at all possible, not to create a bigger evil from your advice.
Must have knowledge regarding that which you advise.
We should always accept advice and cut off pride.

When giving advice:
1. Its important to know that theres a big difference between shaming someone and
advising them.
2. Do it nicely. Surround the meat with 2 pieces of bread. The meat is the advice and the 2
pieces of bread are some nice compliments.
3. You must have knowledge of that on which you advice
4. Lastly, you should accept the advice and not be proud. Its important!

Abdullah bin Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saws) said: "I have been ordered to
fight against people until they testify that there is nothing worthy of worship except Allah and
that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah and until they perform the prayers and pay the
zakat, and if they do so they will have gained protection from me for their lives and property,
unless [they do acts that are punishable] in accordance with Islam, and their reckoning will be
with Allah the Almighty."
[Bukhari and Muslim]

Sub-Narrator: Shu'bah ibnul Hajjaj

Lived from 80-160 AH
He was a freed slave; Master of Hadeeth from among the people of Basrah, among the
students of al-Hasan al-Basri; met Anas ibn Maalik; had no peer in Hadeeth in his era;
narrated a large number of Hadeeth.
o Many scholars of the past were slaves.
Hasan Al-Basri his parents were Persian slaves, Saeed ibn Jubayr, Mujahid etc.
o Dawah point Whats the deal with slavery in Islam Western mindset of slavery is:
packing Africans into boats like animals, dying on the way to the New World, being
thrown overboard and when they got there the inhumane treatment continued. The
life expectancy upon beginning slavery was 5-10 years. The separation of families, the
humiliation, and so on. Example of Islamic slavery Abi Dharr dressed well and his
slave would be wearing the same thing. He was asked about it to which he said,
Indeed one time I criticized a man (Bilal ibn Rabah) by insulting his mother and
when the Prophet heard that he said you still have some jahiliyya in you. Upon
hearing this he went back to Bilal and laid his face on the floor for him to step on.
Bilal said no he would never do that to him. After that he would never treat a person
bad. He heard the Prophet said that indeed your slaves are your brothers. So dress
them as you dress, feed them with what you eat, and so on. Now is this closer to
slavery or employment? Also Abi Dharr is not a regular person he was one of the
sayyids.

o Shubah divided his days into 3 He would spend 8 hours with deen, 8 hours tending
to his mistress and the rest tending to his own daily affairs. Eventually, his mistress
realized how smart he was and how much he could do so he was freed.
Among those that narrated from him: Ayub as-Sukhtiani (his teacher), al-Thawri, ibnal-
Mubarak and Wakee.
Sufyan al-Thawri called him the Leader of the Believers in the field of Hadeeth.
Imam al-Shaafiee said, Were it not for him, hadeeth would not be known in Iraq.
I never saw anyone more gentle with the needy than Shubah.
He once saw one of his students wearing a new shirt and asked him how much he had paid
for it. The man replied, 8 dirhams. He said, Maybe you could have bought one for 4
dirhams and spent 4 in charity?
o Think about this. Could we spend a little less on what we buy and spend the rest on
charity? Reducing in your expenditures increases in the amount you can spend in
sadaqah e.g. an extra dollar to the masjid every week. Side note if you dont have
anything to give say you have nothing but at least smile, but if you have something
and dont want to give, at least give something. Hadeeth of the Prophet on a man
giving sadaqah one night randomly. It turns out it was given to a thief, next night
ends up to a prostitute, and on the third it turns out given to a rich man after some
reflection the wisdom in this the thief may stop stealing as he does not need to steal
to acquire money, the prostitute gives up her way of life and the rich man notices he
is wealthy and doesnt give sadaqah and so he starts giving. Dont look down upon
people if they are needy, dont be of the people that neglect them, put them down,
etc.
o Ayesha (RA) used to polish the coins that she was going to give sadaqah. She said that
I am putting them in the hands of Allah (SWT)
Shubah was known for his simplicity, his frequent praying, his generosity, and his frequent
fasting once again, a great link between knowledge and action that we should reflect
upon.

Ordered to Fight Against the People
Implicit command from Allah I have been ordered
o Disclaimer: Some of the hadeeth were discussing were learning of the obligations
we have personally and obligations of Muslim states/society that has a khalifa (ruler),
people, army, etc. This is only for the leader.
Majority of scholars state that the people is a reference to the Mushrikeen (idolaters), due
to the verified practice of peace agreements and jizyah as performed by the Prophet (saw)
himself.
o There is another variation of this Hadeeth in Sunan An-Nasai Where the Prophet
said he was ordered to fight the mushrikeen/idol worshippers/polytheists.
o We also have to take historical precedence into account. If the prophet was only
ordered to fight the polytheists, how did he make peace treaties? How did he not
fight at times? We can see examples in Treaty of Hudaybiyah, how he dealt with the
ruler of Abyssinia etc. Umar made a peace treaty with the Christians of Jerusalem.
o This shows us that one of the options the Caliph has is to fight the people. However,
its not the only option. In Makkah, the Prophet was patient and he didnt fight.

Supported furthermore by the fact that this Hadeeth represents a general statement, not a
specific one.
o This is a general hadeeth so one of the options the sultan or khalifa has is to fight the
people. Why is the Quran so graphic e.g. cut off their heads and finger [tips]?
Why the specificity? They were detail-oriented people. In Makkah they had to
persevere so being told to fight they would have to know to what extent. For a long
time they were told no you cant fight so finally when told they have to know the
details i.e. fight to protect, fight with what, where we draw the line, etc.
It goes against there is no compulsion in religion {2:256}
If we leave the hadeeth as it stands without sub-commentary
o The goal of fighting is to make sure people have the right to hear about Islam. Its not
to fight people to make them Muslim.
o Historically several nations did not allow their people to discuss, teach or spread
Islam. There was religious oppression.
o Hence, the Muslim state was allowed to fight as an option. They fought for these
rights. This is also why when they had these rights, they signed peace treaties with
non-Muslims and mushrikeen.

A Question
Is it wrong for the Prophet (saw) to have fought to spread the domain of Islam (not to
spread Islam) since it is the best way of life for mankind?
o People who say Muslims are wrong for trying to spread their governance are
hypocrites! This is exactly whats happening today. This is what Greeks and Romans
did. They didnt say, AlHamdulillah, were happy with our lands. They went and
conquered because they believed they had the best form of living. The Chinese did it,
the Indians did it, and today the Western powers are doing it (i.e. spread democracy
& freedom).
o Taking into account the above, whats really wrong with the Muslims doing it?

Would it then be wrong for democratic nations to fight wars to spread democracy since they
believe in earnest that it is the best way of life for mankind?

Note on Jizyah
For the longest time, it was only 1 dirham! Later, it was raised to 4 dirhams. This is at
a time when the lower class was earning 10-20,000 dirhams.
Back then, there was almost no incentive to become Muslim. If anything, it would be
easier to stay non-Muslim living under Muslim rule or even under non-Muslim rule.
Financially speaking, you dont have to pay zakah which is almost guaranteed to be a
larger amount. Additionally, as a dhimmi, you dont have to fight. The Muslims fight
to protect you. This was a minimal tax for protection.
When an army was needed to fight the Romans in the battle of Yarmuk, Abu
Ubaidah the leader of the Muslim Army had to withdraw forces from the conquered
lands of Shaam so that they would be able to fight the Byzantines as one huge,
unified army. They returned the money given to them by the dhimmi Ahl al-Kitaab as
they could no longer physically protect them. Surprisingly, the Christian dhimmis
would pray to God for the Muslims to be victorious against the Roman Christians.
Had the Romans been given the same chance they would have kept the money. One
of the scholars wrote a book in which he said When it comes to our dawah
sometimes were very meek like help me, dont be like that be on the offensive. .
Beneficial Lessons
People are to be judged by their outward actions and appearances. There is no validity to
seeking out their intentions and secrets. Their intentions are none of our business.
o If person outwardly become muslim, we cannott say that his/her intentions are
not good

Life and property are two necessities that Islam protects.
This hadeeth has particular importance in times of Fitnah, for whoever declares the
shahadatayn, prays our prayer and pays the zakaah then we cannot say otherwise without
clear evidence.
Except by the right of Islam crimes that may call for capital punishment and the like.

On the authority of Abu Huraira AbdurRahmaan ibnu Sakhr, who said: I heard the Messenger
of Allah (saas) say: "What I have forbidden to you, avoid; what I have ordered you to do, do as
much of it as you can. It was only their excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their
prophets that destroyed those who came before you." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Narrator: Abu Hurairah
o [d. 57 AH] Born in Yemen as an orphan with only a mother. Accepted Islam early
but didnt join the Prophet (saw) until 7 AH; spent three years with the Prophet
(saas) in close company, persistent in taking Hadeeth from him.
o I divided my nights into three parts: in one third I would pray, in another sleep,
and in the last third I would review the Hadeeth of the Prophet (saw).
He made the effort to learn the hadeeth
o I said: Messenger of Allah, truly I hear from you many ahadeeth which I forget.
The Prophet (saw) said: Spread your cloak. I spread my cloak and the Prophet

never forgot a thing thereafter. (Bukhari)
This happened to him because he made the effort.
o Narrated 5374 Hadeeth, large number Agreed Upon.
Ibn Umar narrated about 2600 and Ayesha RA narrated 2200

Abu Hurairah and Hadeeth

Lo! The people are saying: Abu Hurairah narrates too much. If it were not for two
verses in the book of Allah I would not narrate a single hadeeth. (Those who hide the
proofs and the guidance which We revealed, after We had made it clear in the Scripture:
such are cursed by Allah and cursed by those who have the power to curse. Except such
of them as repent and amend and make manifest the truth. Toward these I relent. I am
the Relenting, the Merciful.) (2:159-160) Truly, our brethren among the Muhajireen were
busy with business transactions; and truly, our brethren among the Ansaar were busy
working their lands; and truly, Abu Hurairah all this time kept company with the Prophet
provided he had quelled his hunger, attending what they did not attend and memorizing
what they did not memorize. (Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmad)
He was one of the ahlas suffahe ate whoever provided them food they stayed there to
learn from Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Beneficial Lessons
Points to the mercy of the Shariah in that it orders a person to only do what they are
capable of doing
o He starts with forbidding, which you are not allowed to do and you cant do it
until in absolute necessity
o Obligatory to stand up for the prayer.
o Morning Dhikr is strong recommendation by Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
Subhanallahi walhamdulilah-100
Laillaha illallahu wahdahu---100/10
Do as much as you can
Types of questions that led to destruction of Societies:
1. That which has no benefit and no need for it
2. That which is asked in ridicule or jest
a. Characteristic of hypocrites
3. Too many hypothetical questions
4. About that which Allah has kept hidden (Qadr, Hour)
The type of question which is praiseworthy is that which results in a good deed and
benefits the person
It is not enough to not do the forbidden, but to stay away from it and from that which
leads to it.
o You block every pathway to something wrong
Hadeeth in ibn Majah Aishah said: May Allah have Mercy upon the women of Ansar,
their modesty did not prevent them from asking questions.

On the authority of Abu Huraira, who said: the Messenger of Allah (saas) said: "Allah the
Almighty is pure and accepts only that which is pure. And indeed Allah has commanded the
believers with that which He commanded the Messengers, and He has said: "O My
Messengers! Eat of the good and pure things and do righteous deeds". And Allah the Almighty
has said: "O you who believe! Eat of the good and pure things which We have provided you".
Then he mentioned the case of a man who, having journeyed far, is disheveled and dusty and
who spreads out his hands to the sky [saying]: "O Lord! O Lord!" - while his food is unlawful,
his drink unlawful, his clothing unlawful, and he is nourished unlawfully, so how can he be
answered?" (Muslim)

The Companions on Abu Hurairah

The number of those who narrated from him reached 800 including both Companions
and Successors.
At the burial of Abu Hurairah, ibn Umar said: He preserved the ahadeeth of the Prophet
for the Muslims and O Abu Hurairah! You were the most devoted of us in
accompanying the Messenger of Allah, and the most knowledgeable of us all in his
hadeeth. (H Tirmithi)
Abu Ayyub al-Ansari said: Abu Hurairah heard what we did not hear.
Abu Hurairah led the funeral prayers over Aisha and Hafsa.
Beneficial Lessons
Establishes one of Allahs names at-Tayyib Pure; He who is far removed from
deficiency and defect
Allah only accepts from the actions, statements, wealth, that which is pure and free from
disobedience
How to achieve purity in word and deed? To make it sincere for Allah, in accordance with
the Sunnah and to eat from halal sources avoiding haram sources.
Eating halal is strongly emphasized as it helps the Muslim to perform righteous deeds, to
have his dua accepted and to be pure before Allah and vice versa.

Means Behind Accepted & Rejected Du'a

A - The dua of the traveler upon a long journey.
A - The dua of the disheveled and dusty person.
o The story of Imam Malik disciplining a young boy who demanded that the Imam
teach him hadeeth as compensation.
o The story of Jurayj a very righteous worshipper, who was performing voluntary
acts of worship and when his mother called him he didnt reply so his mother
made dua against him and he went through a big fitnah.
A - The dua of the one who raises his hands in accordance with the Sunnah (not during
Jumuah, etc.)
o One of the sahabah saw someone on the day of jumuah raising his hand making
dua he stopped him and told that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) never did that.
A To repeat certain portions of the dua w/ humility.
All these things are source of acceptance of dua but dua is rejected because of following

R The one who eats haram food
R The one who drinks haram drinks
R The one who is sustained by haram earnings

Narrator: Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abu Talib
o [d. 50 AH] Grandson of the Prophet through his daughter Fatima. Born 3 AH, 1 yr
older than al-Hussain.
o Became Caliph after the death of Ali but abdicated to Muawiyyah only 6-7 months
later in 41 AH. He thus fulfilled the prophecy of the Prophet (saw) that he would bring
peace to two great groups of the Muslims.
o He and his brother will be the masters of the Youth on the Day of Judgment as stated
by the Prophet (saw)
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) used to recite for hasan and hussain I seek refuge to
Allah (SWT) over you from every shaitan, every harmful creature and every evil eye

Beneficial Lessons
This hadeeth represents a great, yet forgotten, principle of cautious avoidance (wara) in
Islam.
From the benefits of wara:
Zuhd (astism) and warazuhd is to neglect everything that has no benefit in the
Hereafter, wara means avoiding everything that you fear might harm you in the
Hereafter.
If you keep running a yellow light eventually you will run a red light.
1. It protects your honor and your religion (Hud:6)
2. It is among the best aspects of the deen: ) ;- ;--- ,-= ( ;'=- -
3. It is a means of strength in worship Have wara and you will be among the best of
those who worship Allah (S- IM)
4. Sunnah of RasulAllah (saw) exemplified by the incident of him finding a date in the
street. He didnt pick it up fearing that it might be from charity Agreed]. This is an
example of Waraa.
5. It is a source of salvation from the oppression of doubt.
a. Hasan al-Basri Taqwa will remain in the hearts of the people who have
taqwa as long as they leave off much of the permissible for fear that it might
be impermissible.
b. Umar bin khattab would avoid 90% of the actions that appear permissible
for fear that they might lead to something haraam.
c. Abdullah ibn Mubarak If you really think about this hadeeth this is the
summary of how to deal with confusing matters. For me to leave one piece of
money of haram is more beloved to me than giving a 1000 in sadaqah.
d. Allah (SWT) has given us boundaries and we have to stay within them.

Beneficial Lessons

The religion of Islam is full of merits, this being one.
From the merits of Islam is that one should not busy himself to even the smallest degree
with that which will not benefit him in his deen nor in his Hereafter.
The more a person wastes his time with that which does not concern him is a sign of
fault in his deen.
Some examples of that which does not concern: vain speech, excessive questioning into
peoples lives, excessive time in games and news, television, internet if not controlled,
blog comments/arguments, activities of killing time, some stories and magazines.
o Some of us watch the news 3 hours and spend 3 hours discussing it but we dont
read the Quran and we do not lengthen our prayers.
o Imam Ghazali you should know that which is in front of you and you are
accountable for every single word you say. Money that you can invest for the
hereafter is your breath so how do you want to use the time. And your tongue is
the weapon that you can use to capture Hur al-Ayn in the Jannah.
We have so limited commodity in this world why waste it in wasteful
things.
o Hasan al-basri From the signs that Allah (SWT) hates a person is to make him
busy with that which doesnt concern him.
o Malik ibn Deenar If you find that your heart is hard and your body is weak and
there is deficiency in your provision then you must be involved with the thing that
doesnt concern you.
o Imam shafi 3 things that increase intellect -
1. Sitting with scholars.
2. Sitting with righteous people.
3. Leaving off speech that doesnt concern one.
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that choose your company wisely.
o He (SAW) also said that a person is upon the ways of his friend.
o Whoever wishes that Allah (SWT) illuminates light upon him should leave that
which doesnt concern him.
HADEETH THIRTEEN
FROM THE PORTENTS OF FAITH: LOVING YOUR BROTHER AND SISTER

On the authority of Abu Hamza Anas ibn Maalik, the servant of the Messenger of Allah
that the Prophet (saw) said: "None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother
what he loves for himself."
(Bukhari and Muslim)

Narrator: Anas ibn Maalik

o Born 10 BH, was brought by his mother after the Hijrah to serve the Prophet (saw)
which he did till his death (saw).
His mother did that so he can learn everything about Prophet Muhammad
(SAW) must have been a very tough decision for his mother but it was a
very intelligent one.
o The Prophet (saw) prayed for him that Allah bless him with wealth, long life, many
children and enter him into Jannah. Had ~ 120 children; died after reaching 100
years of age.
o Narrated about 2200 hadeeth. Died in Basra 93 AH.
He is after Ayesha RA in the list of those who narrated most ahadeeth.

Beneficial Lessons

From the signs of complete faith is to love for your brother what you love for yourself
and vice versa.
o A Companion of the Prophet had an problem with mice. Yet, he would not poison
the mouse for fear that it will run to his neighbors house. The Sahaba used to
think so deeply.
Encouragement for humility. You wont like to be in a better condition than your brother
or sister.
Encouragement to forsake hatred and envy.
o If you love for your brother/sister what you love for yourselves then there is no
place for envy or hatred.
To love for those even that may not love you or wish well for you is an even higher
application.
o Ibn abbas While looking at any ayah I wish that every one know about the
ayah what I know.
o It is short hadeeth in commentary and also short in implementation. It doesnt
take a lot from us to implement this hadeeth.

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "The blood of a
Muslim may not be legally shed except in one of three [instances]: the married person
who commits adultery, a life for a life and one who forsakes his religion and abandons
the community." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Subnarrator: Masrooq ibnul-Ajda'

o [62 AH] Narrated from such Companions as Umar and his son Abdullah, Uthmaan, Ali
ibn Abu Talib, Aisha, Muaath ibn Jabal, Ubay ibn Kab, ibn Masood, etc.
Lived among Sahabah and very early Tabieen.
o Those that narrated from him include al-Shabi, Ibrahim al-Nakhaee, Abdullah ibn
Murra, Abu Is-haq
o Al-Shabi said, I never saw anyone seek knowledge as persistently as Masrooq.
Also, When he made Hajj, I never saw him sleep except in sajdah till his return.
o Ibnul-Madeeni said, I dont believe anyone from among those who were led by Abu
Bakr in prayer precedes Masrooq.

Disclaimer: every single one of these punishments is carried out by the leader of the Islamic
state and are subject to his opinion.
Masrooq
That I give verdicts of justice and truth one day is more beloved to me than one year in
battle.
o Best jihad is to stand up speaking the truth. Command the good and forbid the
evil.
o If you cant get to the leader make dua for them, make dua for their guidance.
Fought in al-Qaadisiyah and against the Khawaarij with Ali ibn Abu Talib.
It is enough as evidence of a persons knowledge that he has humility before Allah and
it is enough as evidence of his ignorance that he is proud of himself.
o If you know Allah (SWT), it make you more humble towards him.
o Aburrahman ibn Awf we had only one kafn to cover hamza and how good he
was and Musab bin Umair. We would cover his head and his feet would be
uncovered. We buried him like that and he was so good. They were better than
me and they were so poor but you are offering me cold water. May be Allah
(SWT) is giving me the reward for all my good deeds in this world.
The person should have certain times of solitude wherein he reflects upon his sins and
asks forgiveness.
o We live in era where there is no silent moment

The Adulterer who has known Marriage

In Sahih Muslim it is narrated that when Maaiz came to the Messenger of Allah (saw)
and said, Purify me, he said, Woe to you! Go back and pray to Allah for forgiveness
and repent to Him.
Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar said:
It may be understood from this case the case of Maaiz when he confessed to having
committed zina that it is preferred for the one who falls into a similar sin to repent to
Allah and conceal his sin and not mention it to anyone, as Abu Bakr and Umar said to
Maaiz. Whoever discovers anything of that nature should conceal it according to what
we have mentioned; he should not expose it or refer the matter to the ruler, as the
Prophet (saw) said in this story: If you had concealed it with your garment it would have
been better for you. Hence al-Shafiee said: If a person commits a sin and Allah
conceals it for him, I prefer for him to conceal it too and to repent, and he quoted as
evidence the story of Maaiz with Abu Bakr and Umar. (Fath al-Bari)
o He keep going back because he wasnt sure if his repentance has been accepted
or not.
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) asking him questions to find excuses for him.

To Take a Life Forbidden by Allah
And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein, and
the Wrath and the Curse of Allah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for
him.

{4:93}
From the 7 deeds that wipe out all good deeds al-Mubiqaat (Agreed upon)
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said avoid the 7 destroyer of all good deeds
1. Shirk
2. Sorcery
3. Taking a life that is forbidden by Allah (SWT)
4. Devouring the property of an orphan
5. Consuming Riba
6. Run away from battle
7. Wrongly accusing chaste, believing women of committing zina.
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, The killing of a believer is greater in the site of
Allah Subhanahu waTa'aala, than if the entire world would be destroyed.
[anNasai]

The One who Forsakes His Religion And Abandons His Community
It is a matter reserved for the ruler who may delay it in hopes of that persons repentance or act
upon it if that person sought to harm the muslims after his apostasy treason essentially. This is
the opinion of Umar, an-Nakhiee, At thawri)
- Ibn hazm and Abdur Razzaq narrated Anas came to Umar RA while he was khalifa
and Umar inquired from him; what happened to the six people who left Islam and joined
the army of mushrikeen and were killed in the battle. Anas said: werent they going to
die anyway. Umar said I would at least have tried to make them come to Islam and had
that not happened I would have put them in jail.
- Shaykh al-islam inbn taymiyyah we would delay the punishment for those whom we
hoped for return to Islam.
Not a reference to simply the one who abandons Islam as can be proven from the
Seerah of the Prophet (saw) that he did not execute those who simply wished to leave
Islam to live out in exile, but only those who sought to harm the Muslims after their
apostasy.
Apostasy - Etymology: Middle English apostasie, from Late Latin apostasia, from Greek,
literally, revolt, from aphistasthai. In a technical sense, as used sometimes by
sociologists, the term refers to renunciation and criticism of, or opposition to, one's
former religion.

Beneficial Lessons
What is the benefit of capital punishment here?
o Every one of these punishments is subject to the ruler. He may either initiate the
punishment or delay/prolong for a reason he may have.

Abu Huraira narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Let him who believes in
Allah and the Last Day either speak good or remain silent, and let him who believes in
Allah and the Last Day be generous to his neighbor, and let him who believes in Allah
and the Last Day be gracious to his guest." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Beneficial Lessons

Importance of Guarding the Tongue:
o May Allah (SWT) have Mercy on him who says something good and get the good
reward for it. Or he stays quiet and is protected from evil.
o Umar ibn Abdul Azeez Whoever counts his words as he speaks will not speak a lot.
o Its not just enough to say we believe, but we also must learn to guard our tongue.
Either we say something good, or we stay quiet. We will recognize people of
knowledge by this virtue. The people of knowledge are generally very quiet.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that Jibreel came to teach me the rights of my neighbors
until I felt that he would tell me to make them part of my inheritance.
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that there are three aspects of happiness good neighbor,
spacious home and ..
A man said to the Prophet (SAW) that his neighbor, a woman, prays a lot and fasts a lot but
she harms her neighbors with her tongue. The Prophet (SAW) immediately said that she is in
Hellfire. [Ahmad]
The three types of neighbors are
1. Close Muslim neighbor has the right of Islam, being close and of being a neighbor
2. Distant Muslim neighbor has the right of Islam and of being a neighbor
3. Non-Muslim neighbor has the right of being a neighbor and of being close if that be
the case
The right of the guest: The ulema have differences of opinion.
o You have to be good to your neighbor, for one day and one night. This is fard kifaayah.
o We ask with the intention of hosting even if they stay somewhere we received the
reward of wanting to host.

On the authority of Abu Huraira, who said, A man said to the Prophet (saw): "Advise
me". He said: "Do not become angry". The man repeated his request several times,
and he replied each time: "Do not become angry". (Bukhari)

This hadeeth shows something really interesting about Imam Nawawi He has experience with
people. All these things that were learning, theyre things that he was doing. Over time, he
learned that this was a big problem. He went out to speak/advise people. He did not lock
himself in a room and do nothing about it.

Beneficial Lessons
Means of Quelling Anger:
1. Saying Authu billahi min ash-Shaytaan ar-Rajeem
2. Changing your position if you are standing, then sit down. If you are sitting, then lie
down.
3. Making Wudu (since Shaytaan is from Fire)
a. Abu Dawood collected Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that anger comes from
shaitan and shaitan comes from fire and water puts off the fire.
b. In psychology it is taught take a time-out.
4. Be quiet/avoid speaking at that moment.
a. Imam Ahmad collected Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said teach one another and
give glad tidings to one another and if you become angry then be quiet, and if you
become angry then be quiet, and if you become angry then be quiet.
b. If you get angry and say something, remember you cannot take it back.
5. Remember that quelling rage results in Jannah (S -Albani)
a. Whoever controls his rage when he is capable of acting upon it (you insult the other
person by acting upon your anger) Allah (SWT) will let him pick any of the Hoor al-
Ayn on the Day of Judgment.
b. This is a reward that is specific for men, largely because they have the authority over
women. Men are most likely the ones to get angry and act upon it. Men are usually
the ones who get into fights in the street.

has prescribed proficiency in all things. Thus, if you execute, execute well; and if you
slaughter, slaughter well. Let each one of you sharpen his blade and let him spare
suffering to the animal he slaughters." (Muslim)

First half part is for the leaders of Islamic state to implement and the rest most of us can apply.

Narrator: Shaddaad ibn Aws
o Companion of the Prophet (saas) known for being among the scholars of the
Companions and the honored; narrated about 50 hadeeth with 3 in the Sahihs.
A female student of his said about Shafi that he would be so good in
making wudu (to make it perfect). Even for such a small act he was very
careful.
o Shaddaad was known for his gentleness and his ability to control his anger.
Considered among the zuhaad of the Companions as well in worship.
Part of our anger is due to that we think some injustice has happened to
us. Some of the think that is our opponent is not getting angry it is
because he deserves to be humiliated.
Rather, that person is being gentle to us in hope that we will be gentle
with him.
o Left Madinah after the assasination of Uthmaan and went to al-Shaam to escape
the Fitnah. Died in Jerusalem in 58 AH at the age of 75.

Beneficial Lessons
Allah has commanded excellence in the Quran.
It is part of this noble religion to show kindness and mercy even to the animal before it is
slaughtered.
From the greatest forms of excellence is that which is done to those who act with evil
towards you.
o We are commanded to be good to animals so how good should we be towards
people?
There are many benefits of excellence as mentioned in the Quran:
1. Allah will reward them with excellence,
2. They will have goodness in this life.
3. The Mercy of Allah is close to them.
4. They will Jannah.
5. They are given glad tidings.
6. Allah Loves them and is with them.
7. Allah will not cause their reward to be lost.
o For those who perform good in this life will get the reward in this world as well
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was asked by a Sahabi, When I slaughter a sheep
am gentle with it. Will I have Mercy of Allah Subhanahu waTa'aala for that. He
(SAW) said, Yes.

On the authority of Abu Dhar Jundub ibnu Junadah, and Muadh ibnu Jabal that the
Messenger of Allah (saas) said:

"Fear Allah wherever you are, and follow up a bad deed with a good one and it will wipe
it out, and behave towards people with good manners." [Tirmithi narrated the hadith
and said it was fine, and in some manuscripts, authentic and fine]

NARRATOR: MUAATH IBN JABAL
The Prophet (SAW) said he was the most knowledgeable of the Ummah in issues of Halal and
Haram. He was sent as an emissary to call the people of Yemen to Islam. He memorized the
entire Quran during the life of the Prophet (saas) and was among those whom the Prophet
(saas) encouraged people to take the Quran from.

It was not common for people to memorize the whole Quran during the life of the prophet
(SAW) and the pious predecessors; Abu Bakr did not, Umar did not, Uthman did, though. Why
didnt they memorize, because they wanted to give the ayah their right and took time with it.

Muadh Ibn Jabal memorized 260 Ahadiths but took 8 years to memorize Suratul Baqara.
Anyone who memorized it was automatically made an Ameer. If you know the issues of Baqara,
understand it, and then you know this deen. They didnt want to go passed the ayah until they
understood the implications. He narrated 157 hadith but died early from plague in 17 AH at the
young age of 34.

Beneficial Lessons
Taqwah: is one of the most important and comprehensive Islamic concepts. The term is derived
from its root "waqayya" which means to protect. Taqwa therefore means to protect one own
self from the severe punishment of Allah by following His guidance.

Taqwa is to do what He told you to do and avoid what He prohibited. That Allah sees you
where He commanded you to be and not where He forbade from being.
Youre supposed to be here, youre there, and not supposed to be anywhere else. That is
taqwa. When something is simple to understand it becomes easier to implement.

Fear Allah wherever you are whether people see you or they dont. This means to place
between you and Allah swt a shield, do what He told you to do and avoid what He forbade.
Sahih al-Jaamo said, from among the deeds that result in salvation is to fear Allah both in public
and in secret. How do we have fear of Allah swt? Muslims should always Be acting upon the
Quran and Sunnah to reach this stage, and be pleased or content with a little, because we do
not deserve more.

Three things that will destroy:
1. Stinginess which is obeyed
2. A desire/temptation which is followed
3. A person who is pleased with himself.

Three things that will save:
1. To be humble in front of Allah swt in public and private.
2. Being the same when youre wealthy and when youre poor. (Being charitable when
youre poor and when youre rich. The Sahaba would give most when they were poor
because the Prophet said if you give you will be increased. )
3. That you are just and fair when youre angry as well as when youre happy (that youre
the same).

Ash-Shafiee said there are three honorable characteristics:
1. Being generous when you have little.
2. Wara in private when youre all alone.
3. Speak the truth in front of someone that you need (e.g. your boss, being afraid to say I
need to pray Jumuah prayer) or someone that you fear.

From the Fruits of Taqwah

1. It is a cause of ease in your affairs.
, - - -| -, -| ., -|
And whosoever keepeth his duty to Allah, He maketh his course easy for him.
{At-Talaaq: 4}

Whoever intended the hereafter should be seeking three things:
a. Allah swt will gather the dunya for him
b. Will make him content
c. The material of the dunya will come to him reluctantly

Three things for people who intended the dunya:
a. Allah will divide it up for him they will have to run every where to put all the pieces
together from day to night
b. He will put his poverty in front of his eyes, Keeping up with the Jones only looking to
see what he doesnt have
c. He will only get what is decreed for him

Example of Dr. Ali when working in clinic with Christian doctors at first he just said he had to
go to Friday prayers had to start later. At first it was okay but as they got established there
was an increasing tension and Dr. Ali had less time for the deen, so he eventually got a new
job after consulting his teacher who shared with him a hadith. (Message was I think doing
things for Allahs sake.) People would call him an extremist for getting out of his job (fellow
Muslim doctors). Within 3 months he was making double of what his teachers at his
residency were making in half the time. It wasnt like he thought hed just give it a try. No.
He had complete trust in Allah swt. It will bring ease to your affairs, Allah swt is the
Provider.

The Keys to Taqwah by Ibn Juzayy al-Kalbi:

1. Fear of punishment in the Hereafter

Learn about the Hereafter, the stages of the Hereafter e.g. the hadith on pants beyond the
ankles being in the Hellfire, what does that mean? The siraat on the day of judgment, getting
across that is hard enough as it is but now our ankles will be burning with the fire of hell
trying to get across it.

2. Fear of punishment in this world.

Sins cause punishment in this world. The salaf would wait for this. Ibn Sireen one of the
famous tabieen when he was dying he felt a lot of agony thinking this is the punishment for
such and such he did 30 years ago. How does he know? He was waiting/expecting it.

3. Hope for reward in the Hereafter.

When we have some hope that there is something waiting for us, in the hereafter.

4. Hope for reward in this world.

We expect the status and goodness in this world as well as the Hereafter.

5. Fearing the accounting for your deeds

6. Feeling shame that Allah sees you in disobedience.

7. Being grateful to Allah for all His blessings to you.

8. Having true knowledge of Allah and His Names

- -| _=, , `_,- `,- -| ., -| .,-
The erudite among His bondmen fear Allah alone. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Forgiving.
(Faatir:28)

9. Having true awe for the Majesty and Might of Allah.

Mushahadah how can you do anything wrong if you feel as if you see Him, being in awe of
Him.

10. Being sincere and loyal in your love to Allah.

10 Ways to Erase Sins

1. Sincere repentance (stopping, remorse, intention)

Amongst the most effective ways is sincere repentance: stop doing the evil thing, feel
remorse over it, sincere intention never to go back.

2. Seeking forgiveness (Sayyid al-Istighfaar)
' `,`, .`' `,_ ..`' - ', .`` ', _ `,
`,, ..`=` ,`' :, ` `, ..`. .,`,' : :`,
.` .,`,', `, , ``, `,`, .,` .`' .'
yaghfiruth-thunooba 'illaa 'Anta.
O Allah, You are my Lord, there is none worthy of worship but You. You created me
and I am your slave. I keep Your covenant, and my pledge to You so far as I am able. I
seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I admit to Your blessings upon
me, and I admit to my misdeeds. Forgive me, for there is none who may forgive sins
but You. Reference: Whoever recites this with conviction in the evening and dies during that
night shall enter Paradise, and whoever recites it with conviction in the morning and dies during
that day shall enter Paradise, Al-Bukhari 7/150. Other reports are in An-Nasa'i and At-Tirmithi.
This is the best way of asking for forgiveness. Whoever says it with meaning in the day and
dies in the day will go to jannah (same with night).

3. Deeds that act as expiation (5 salah, Jumuah, Ramadan, etc.)

The Sahaba who had just kissed a woman, and felt very remorseful. He was told the prayer he
just prayed had wiped it out, this is for minor sins. Also to wipe out sins is the 100x adhkar.

4. Trials and afflictions met w/ patience in this life

When we react to pain or say something like, Jesus Christ! or cursing. The true patience is
to not do that, to try and remember Allah swt.

5. Supplication of believer for another believer

Whether we make duaa for living or dead thats why its important to make duaa for parents
as it wipes their sins.

6. Act done by living person for dead (Hajj, Fast, Zakah)

For people who would have done those things e.g. miss fasts during Ramadan because of
illness then dies son could make it up if he was someone who fasted, same for Hajj and zakah.

7. The intercession of the Prophet (saas) for his Ummah.

8. The questioning in the grave and its punishment.

The sins of experiencing fear of the horror of those angels is an expiation. If you werent dead
you would die from how horrific they are.

9. The horror & diff. of the events of the Day of Judgment.

10. The Mercy of the Most Merciful not due to any deed

Angels will say to the last people taken out of the Hellfire look at them they have no deeds.
Its like someone who gave little compared to someone who gave much, or if youre thirsty
and someone comes with a drop of water. Its not nothing but out of speech or for what its
worth you can say that. Some people take this as daleel for not having to do extra questions
their mistake being it is a statement/exclamations of angels.

The Importance of Good Manners

Give rights to
1) Allah swt,
2) To Creation,
3) To yourself.

A man can reach through their good manners the status of one who prays at night and fasts
during the day. You want to have good manners then implement what weve spoken about thus
far.

On the authority of Abul Abas Abdullah ibn Abbas, who said: One day I was behind the
Prophet (saas) and he said to me:

"O Young man, I shall teach you some words [of advice]: Be mindful of Allah, and Allah
will protect you. Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, ask
of Allah; if you seek help, seek help of Allah. Know that if the community were to gather
together to benefit you with anything, it would benefit you only with something that
Allah had already decreed for you, and that if they gather together to harm you with
anything, they would harm you only with something Allah had already decreed for you.
The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried." (Tirmithi)

In a version other than that of Tirmithi it reads:

" Be mindful of Allah, you will find Him before
you. Get to know Allah in prosperity and He will
know you in adversity. Know that what has passed
you by was not going to befall you; and that what
has befallen you was not going to pass you by. And
know that victory comes with patience, relief with
affliction, and ease with hardship."

NARRATOR: ABDULLAH IBN MASOOD

He is the Scholar of the Ummah, Imam of Tafsir, cousin of the Prophet (SAW) born three
years before the Hijrah. He migrated to Madinah from Makkah in 8 AH with his mother.
There is a famous story regarding his early pursuit of knowledge, he took hadith from
most of the major Companions and recited the Quran upon Zayd and Ubayy. He was the
sheikh of Said ibn Jubayr, Mujahid and others. He spent the greater part of 30 months
with the Prophet (SAW), who made a special supplication for him that he become
knowledgeable in the religion. He became an expert in Tafsir and narrated 1660 Hadith.
He died 68 AH.

Beneficial Lessons
This hadith is an indication of the Prophets concern for the Youth as well as his humility.
To guard Allah is to follow His commands and abstain from what He forbids, results in
Allahs protection of the servant both in this life and in the Hereafter.
Allahs guarding is like he is protecting servants worldly needs and interests, such as
protecting his body, family, wealth, etc; also protecting his deen from temptation, bidah,
error
Ali said, Every person has two Angels with him that guard him from everything that is
not decreed. When the decree (death) comes, they leave

Some aspects of guarding Allah are:

1. Guarding the prayer times, humility in prayer.

Be guardians of your prayers, and of the midmost prayer, and stand up with devotion

3. Your oaths keeping promises

Allah will not take you to task for that which is unintentional in your oaths, but He will
take you to task for the oaths which ye swear in earnest. The expiation thereof is the
feeding of ten of the needy with the average of that wherewith ye feed your own folk,
or the clothing of them, or the liberation of a slave, and for him who findeth not (the
wherewithal to do so) then a three days' fast. This is the expiation of your oaths when
ye have sworn; and keep your oaths. Thus Allah expoundeth unto you His revelations
in order that ye may give thanks.
(Al Maidah:89)

4. Your private parts from all aspects of zina

Also, Musa when he said, Absolutely not! for lo! My Lord is with me. He will certainly

It is a must for a Muslim to ask from Allah and to depend upon Him and no other.

Knower of all things. (An-Nisaa:32)

Allah becomes angry if you dont ask from Him (S-Tirm)

It is permissible to seek the help of a created being in that which they are capable of doing due
to the hadith. Also shows the importance of belief in Qadr and that all things are written as a
result of Allahs perfect knowledge. We benefit by knowing that everything is decreed and yet
Allah is merciful and He does not decree absolute evil. The hadith also denotes the importance
of patience.

And that relief comes after affliction an affliction which necessitates patience

And that ease comes with hardship: And with the hardship comes ease, with

If we want to be sincere there must be something that comes with it. Your life has no change.
Make use of the people around you. You dont have the right to seek knowledge elsewhere
until you learn from everyone around you. Lesson from this hadith should last a lifetime.
Protecting your body and being righteous could lead to great physical strength. When you fear
Allah internally (and you act accordingly) He will protect your limbs. Allah will take care of you if
you take care of your obligations. Salah should be prayed on time, the time slot is there if we
cant make it on time not so we can be lax. Of course there are exceptions e.g. performing
surgery, police chasing, etc. conditions that wouldnt make sense to abandon an activity upon
hearing the adhan (imagine Oh! The adhan. Khalaas. Well just leave this chest open / Later
criminal.) Performing wudu cleanses the sins of the body as easy as saying sallallahu alayhi
wasallam so we should do.

Have trust in Allah with complete conviction, no doubt as Musa did in response to Firaun, that
is tawwakul. Whoever fears Allah (has taqwa) has Allah with him, and whoever has Allah with
him has a team that will never be defeated. There is nothing too little and nothing too small. Its
wrong to ask a human being for something only Allah swt does, e.g. cure for a disease it is ok to
ask for advice but not that they will give you the cure. You cant ask people to protect you from
shaytan, fitnah, or getting you into Jannah, thats all Allah awj.

Patience is one of the key reasons of how people get into Jannah and protected from Hellfire.
From hadith where Rasulullah narrates what Jibreel saw covering Jannah and Jahannam.
Patience with difficulties. Patience with temptation in resisting it. Most of the sins come from
people in 2 matters, limited patience with things they love (like), limited patience with things
they hate (dislike).

The same difficulty is mentioned in both verses (94:5-6) but not ease, i.e. there are 2 general
eases per 1 difficulty. (Doesnt count with e.g. putting yourself in difficulty that is haram like
something to do with alcohol.) One of the reasons for trial and hardship is erasing our sins.

When you never face difficulty you start becoming arrogant, e.g. What do I need? E.g.
wearing shorts, tank top/t-shirt at home in winter with heat up to 80, we could save a lot just
by investing in a sweaterits part of the deen to conserve.

Action Items

-Guard
-Be in a state of wudu
-Perform salah on time
-Be patient: in times of hardship, in resisting temptation, with things you like, with things you
dislike. (Advice from Sh. Yaser Birjas to me when I asked for counsel for patience he said, Deal
with people according to your standard.)

Abu Masood Uqbah ibnu Amru Al-Ansari that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

"Among the things that have reached the people from the words of the previous
prophets was: 'If you feel no shame, then do as you wish.(Bukhari)

NARRATOR: ABU MASOOD AL-BADRI

He was one of the 70 Companions to participate in the second oath of allegiance to the
Prophet (SAW) at Aqabah, called al-Badri only due to the fact that he lived near a well
named Badr, and not because he participated in the battle of Badr. He narrated ~ 100
ahadith. He died in 41 AH.

The word haya' is derived from the word "al-hayah", which means life, as if the person who has
no haya' (modesty) is like a dead person.

Beneficial Lessons
The essential meaning of the hadith as stated by Ibnul-Qayyim is that of a statement of fact
by the Prophet (saas); he who has no modesty does what he pleases.

The revelations all agree upon the importance of doing good

Allah did not give different messages, theyre all the same. Look at the Bible the way people
go to heaven it says the same thingrepentance, do a Bible search of repentance.

Encouragement to act upon the way of the Prophets

Encouragement to have modesty, for it is good all of it

(Haya) Modesty is a branch of faith (iman). (60 or 70 odd branches with removing something
from the floor being the lowest.) The Prophet told a brother who was chastising his brother for
being too modest, Leave him alone for modesty is from iman.
Modesty is giving charity, so that others do not know. Dont be boastful, not to draw attention.

Clothing is an essential part of Haya as well. However, it is very unfortunate that there is a
concept in Muslim world that women should be dressed a certain way but men can dress as
they please, this is a double standard, brothers should check their clothing. (hadith) Obscenity
will bring down an act; modesty always beautifies an act (Tirmidhi). (hadith) Indeed Allah swt is
shy and He covers, He loves modesty in His creation and He loves those who cover, so if one of
you (?) then he should cover as well. (Cover yourself from other people.) We see adverse to this
where? In gym, lockers, high school, people think youre weird to want to cover up. We get this
misconception that its okay to be seen by others (of the same sex)its not okay.

(hadith) (narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas) Every religion has its character and the character of
Islam is modesty. Not in knowledge though, i.e. dont be shy to ask a question. (hadith) Their
(Ansari women) modesty does not prevent them from seeking knowledge (Allah is not shy of
the truth). In that case modesty is blameworthy. Modesty in the Sunnah, e.g. beard, wearing
pants above the ankle, using miswak, washing the feet in the sink, praying in public (sisters are
permitted) (all these are ways of making dawah).

(Br. Shakur was asking about the hadith something like A Muslim should never put themselves
in a situation that it looks like theyre doing something theyre not in regards to in places
where Muslim practices come across as backward.)

Matters where modesty is not praiseworthy seeking knowledge, following the Sunnah,
speaking the truth and commanding good/forbidding evil.

Some sayings of the righteous on modesty:
Al-Fudayl: five things are associated with difficulty in life (or a person being astray).
1. The heart is hard (you hear something from the Prophet and youre not moved)
2. The eyes dont cry (from the fear of Allah or the remembrance of Allah)
3. No modesty
4. To desire the material world
5. To have lengthy hopes / desires in your life (forgetting about the Akhira)

Sulayman: If Allah wishes the destruction of a person, He takes the haya (modesty) out of
him.

Action Items
-Sadaqah
-Dont be boastful / attention-garnering
-Be conscious of how you dress yourself.
-Sunnah

NARRATOR: SUFYAN IBN ABDULLAH

He was a companion from the city of Taif and narrated 5 hadith. He was used by Umar ibn
Khattab to gather Zakah.

The literal meaning of "Istiqamah": to go straight into the right direction, acting rightly, allowing
no deviation. It is derived from the stem "Qiyyam", which implies the continuity of doing
something, following up with it and making sure that it is done in the right way and there is
neither deviation nor swerving.

Beneficial Lessons
The first requirement upon a person is to have Imaan.

Istiqaamah to affirm yourself upon the law of Allah in the manner He commanded
after having cultivated true sincerity and purity towards Allah (ibn Uthaymeen)

The merits of Istiqaamah:

So tread thou the straight path as thou art commanded, and those who turn

True Istiqaamah begins in the heart and that can only happen when it occurs on the
tongue. (S Ahmad)

A non-Muslim fellow turns out to have Muslim family so when asked if he was interested to
discuss Islam he was up for it. Turns out outside of not eating pork he doesnt know anything
about Islam.

If someone asks about terrorism or why beard, hijab, etc. how to respond? Be glad and obliged
to respond but start with tawheed. Example of giving dawah to gang members who sell drugs,
had heavy firearms on them at the time, have killed people, and so on. He acknowledged all
that then talked about tawheed and they all took shahadah afterwards. Guns, bulletproof vests
aside the important thing is they should leave knowing La ilaha illallah even if they dont
understand it then and there as long as the seed is placed the rest is none of your responsibility
as Allah swt guides.

What the situation of someone who drinks alcohol and prays 5 times a day. Hopefully his prayer
will overcome the alcohol.

What is Istiqaamah? The idea is to be loyal and sincere to Allah swt then to practice it the way it
should be practiced / act upon what you know.

(hadith) The iman of a person will not be established until his heart is established, and the heart
will not be established until the tongue is established. What you say with your mouth is
indicative of what you say in your heart.

Action Items
-Dont be shy, hesitant, and afraid of being up front about tawheed. Use it first in discussion
about Islam before junctions and so on.
-Be weary of your speech

Abu Abdullah Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari reported that a man asked the
Messenger of Allah (r): If I pray the prescribed (prayers), fast Ramadan, treat
the lawful as permissible and treat the forbidden as prohibited, but do nothing
more than that, shall I enter Paradise? He (r) answered: Yes.
[Muslim]

Narrator: Jabir ibn Abdullah (t)
Jabir (t) was one of the Ansaar of Madinah from the tribe of al-Khazraj. He witnessed the
second oath of allegiance at Aqabah. His father died as shaheed in Uhud.

He narrated 1,540 ahadith; a large number of them were recorded in the two Sahihs (Muslim
and Bukhari). He was also a chief source of knowledge due to his long life and his travels into
Greater Syria.

He became blind at the end of his life and died in Madinah in 93 or 98 AH; some sources say he
was the last of the Companions to die there. Abaan ibn Uthmaan (t) led his funeral prayer.

Beneficial Lessons
This hadith demonstrates the great concern the early generations had for seeking out the path
to goodness and to Jannah. A lot of their questions were about how to seek Janah and when
they were told of a good deed to do, they never asked if it was fardh (obligatory) or not. They
just did it hoping for whatever reward Allah (I) would give them.

The main lesson of this hadith is that whoever performs what is obligated and avoids the
prohibitions will enter Jannah and there are a great many hadith to this effect. In fact to do the
obligatory and avoid the prohibited is the definition of taqwa.

Whoever limits himself to the obligations and leaves off the recommended deeds is not to be
criticized because even in the acts that are obligatory there are sunnan involved.

The importance of obligatory deeds over voluntary. The voluntary deeds are good but if
performing a Sunnah conflicts with the performing of an obligatory deed, then it is better for
one to do the obligatory because it is, by definition, obligatory.
- For example one who wishes to pray Sunnah before Dhuhr but finds that doing so would
cause him or her to delay their Dhuhr salah by a minute or so. In this case, they must wait for
Dhuhr to come in and pray it because it is the obligatory prayer. And if it is the routine of the
person that they pray sunnah before Dhuhr but could not do so this time, they may still be
rewarded as if they prayed the sunnah prayer anyway.

If you want to get close do to Allah (I), do it with the fardh [obligatory actions.] Allah (I) loves
the fard, thats why they are. Fard!- Dr. Ali Shehata

Why were zakaah and Hajj not mentioned?
They werent revealed yet.

On the authority of Abu Malik al-Harith bin 'Asim al-Ash'ari who said: The
Messenger of Allah (saas) said: "Purification is half of iman (faith). Saying 'Al-
Hamdulillah' (Praise belongs to Allah) fills the scales. Saying 'Subhanallah wa al-

belongs to Allah) fills the space between the heavens and the earth. Prayer is a
light. Sadaqah (charity) is a proof. Sabr (patience) is radiance. The Qur'an is an
argument either for you or against you. Everybody goes out in the morning and
sells themselves, either setting themselves free or destroying themselves."
(Muslim)

Narrator: Al-Harith ibn 'Asim al-Ash'ari
Companion who came from Yemen. He later moved to Egypt and then on to Greater Syria where
he met his demise as a result of the plague in 18 AH. It has been narrated that he, Muaath and
Abu Ubaidah all died on the same day from pestilence. He narrated 27 ahadith.

Beneficial Lessons
This hadith denotes the honor and greatness of wudhu by describing it to be half of Imaan.
Salah and iman can be interchangeable terms. Allah (I) calls prayer iman in places and
since we know salah is not completed without wudhu, it adds to the understanding that
wudhu is half of imaan.
Some ahadith on the blessing in wudhu.
o Prophet Muhammad (r) said Only a believer hold on to wudu
o Prophet Muhammad (r) said, whoever makes wudu and he perfects it, sins are being
removed with every water drip falls.
Shows that the rest of the deen is important to you.
o Prophet Muhammad (r) said: When the muslim or mumin (amphasis that it is for every
one) wash their faces, every sin that they committed with their tongue or face will be
removed until the last drop of water.
o We should not walk in the bathroom and leave the bathroom with water puddle. Dont
waste the provision that Allah (I) has given us.
o Prophet Muhammad (r) said: Whoever perfects their wudu and prays two rakah in
which his heart is totally connected to Allah (I), then Jannah is obligated upon him.
o Doing wudu properly will make you ready to enter the Salah psychologically as well as
physically. Your wudhu is your psychological preparation for salah to perform it the best
way.
o A tabiee got pale while making wudu and when asked, he replied: Dont you know who
I am going to pray in front of? SubhanALLAH, this is so amazing. We must ponder over
this situation.
The hadith denotes the greatness of al-Hamdulillah.
There is a difference of opinion on the meaning of filling the scale. The first is that the phrase
is metaphorical. The second is that it is literal, that is to say Allah (I) will give it actual weight on
the scale and only He (I) knows best.
The honor of the two phrases subhanAllah (which means How perfect is Allah from all they
attribute to Him...) and al-Hamdulillah.
o Moisten your tongue with the Remembrance of Allah (I). Allah (I) blesses us to be where
we are. When Allah gives us His blessings, it makes things easy on us but how often does
it occur to us to want to make Him happy when He makes us happy? Allah SWT loves
these phrases and that should be enough for us to start saying these regularly.
- You can intend trees in Jannah and that your sins forgiven when you recite/ask (you
dont get it as a consequence unless you had intended it this is why ulema say learn the
intention like you learn the action).
The hadith notes the honor of prayer and that it is light.
o And establish prayer so it keeps you away from sins and indecency.
o If you have light in the heart, it helps you distinguish the right and wrong
o Guard the middle prayer opinion Asr and other opinon fajr. At asr we are getting out
of work and we are lazy, tired and most likely to be heedless about the prayer.
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said - Whoever neglects salatul Asr his actions will be zero
The prayer is a light in this world (criterion) & the next.
Sadaqah is evidence and proof of the Imaan of the one who performs it for wealth is beloved
and it is only Imaan that leads one to spend it for the sake of Allah.
o The Iman separated you from your money. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that money
will not go down because of sadaqah.
o RED Flag MomentProphet Muhammad (SAW) comes to Madinah first word come out
of his mouth is very important and they will remember that He said O people feed one
another, spread Salam (you should contribute to peace wherever you go), pray at night
when others are sleeping, do these things and you will enter jannah easily. [Husnul

o 10 intentions that can be made when you give sadaqah 5 good for duniya and 5 for
hereafter
Purifies your wealth
Purifies your body
Protects you and your family from disease
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) saidTreat your sick with sadaqah

Relieves you from the sin
Very heavy on the scale
It will help to cross the sirat

the people about good manners and thats what he told Abi Dharr.
o Abi Dharr went to makkah and that time Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was giving dawah
secretly. He finds Ali in makkah who was looking for the people whom wanted to
become Muslim. He took Abi Dharr to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) after 3 days of
misunderstanding and when he sees Prophet Muhammad (SAW) he said assalamu

he went back to his tribe and his whole family became Muslim to. Then half the tribe
becomes Muslim and half agreed to become Muslim when Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
went to Madinah. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) made duaa for both tribes that came
with ghifaree that Allah (SWT) forgives Ghifaree.

Masood prayed over him.
Narrated ~ 280 ahadith.

Beneficial Lessons
- Sunnah is optional and fard is obligatory it is only the defination in fiqh.
- From the seerah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) there are certain things that are fard and some
that are optional.
- Just because it is hadith doesnt make it optional.
Difference between hadith Qudsi and Quran?
o Hadith Qudsi is not recited as part of the Quran. Quran is matawatar and hadith qudsi is
not matawatar.
o Words of Allah (SWT)
The great gentleness and mercy of Allah (SWT) towards us when He says, O My servants; also
reminder of why we were created to serve and worship Allah, our Lord.
Allahs prohibiting thulm upon Himself even though He has the ability to do it.
o Allah (SWT) is capable of every thing.
Definition of thulm: putting something in a place that it doesnt belong.
Ibn Taymiyyah everything that Allah has forbidden is a type of thulm, whereas everything that
he has ordered is a form of justice (adl).
o If you are going to put yourself in a place where you should not be is a thulm.
Narrations on the evil of oppression:
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said whoever took a span of land without having any
legitimate right for it, and then Allah (SWT) will wrap it within the 7
th
earth on the Day of
Judgment.
o You do injustice to any one, make it up in this duniya so you dont have to pay with
taking the bad deeds of the other person or giving your good deed to the other person
o Have mercy upon others Allah (SWT) will have mercy upon you. If you want Allah (SWT)
to forgive you, then forgive other people.
o Look how Shafiee handled this situation. He heard some one back biting about him, so
he went and bought some fruits for the person and gave it to him and said I heard you
were giving me some of your good deeds so I wanted to say thank you.
The importance of asking Allah SWT for guidance (fatihah)
o We dont really own the guidance.
o Guidance can increase.
o We need more guidance.
o It is the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) that he always asked for guidance so we
should ask for guidance.
Why do we ask for guidance if we are already guided?
- Mankind is habituated to sin, thus the great importance of seeking forgiveness and its effect.
The answer of al-Hasan al-Basri to those who asked him on a variety of issues and concerns.
o Make Istighfar: the more you make it, the more Allah (SWT) will continue to provide for
you, he will open up the sky and earth for you.
o We want to be like sahabah, every time they were taught something new, they wanted
to do.
Points on Allah SWTs self-sufficiency
o Allah (SWT) doesnt need us. This is all created for us to gain reward
That one must praise Allah if he finds good in his deeds, for it was Allah that made that deed
easy for him, guided him to it, aided him to perform it and then He will reward him for it In
shaAllah.

o There will remain one man facing the (Hell) Fire and he will be the last person among the
people of Hell to enter Paradise. He will say, 'O my Lord! Please turn my face away from the
fire because its air has hurt me and its severe heat has burnt me.' So he will invoke Allah in
the way Allah will wish him to invoke, and then Allah will say to him, 'If I grant you that, will
you then ask for anything else?'

He will reply, 'No, by Your Power, (Honor) I will not ask You for anything else.' He will give
his Lord whatever promises and covenants Allah will demand.

So Allah will turn his face away from Hell (Fire). When he will face Paradise and will see it, he
will remain quiet for as long as Allah will wish him to remain quiet, then he will say, 'O my Lord!
Bring me near to the gate of Paradise.' Allah will say to him, 'Didn't you give your promises and
covenants that you would never ask for anything more than what you had been given? Woe on
you, O Adam's son! How treacherous you are!'

He will say, 'O my lord,' and will keep on invoking Allah till He says to him, 'If I give what you are
asking, will you then ask for anything else?'

He will reply, 'No, by Your (Honor) Power, I will not ask for anything else.'

Then he will give covenants and promises to Allah and then Allah will bring him near to the gate
of Paradise. When he stands at the gate of Paradise, Paradise will be opened and spread before
him, and he will see its splendor and pleasures whereupon he will remain quiet as long as Allah
will wish him to remain quiet, and then he will say, 'O my Lord! Admit me into Paradise.'

Allah will say, 'Didn't you give your covenants and promises that you would not ask for anything
more than what you had been given?' Allah will say, 'Woe on you, O Adam's son! How
treacherous you are!'

The man will say, 'O my Lord! Do not make me the most miserable of Your creation,' and he will
keep on invoking Allah till Allah will laugh because of his sayings, and when Allah will laugh
because of him.

Allah will say to him, 'Enter Paradise,' and when he will enter it, Allah will say to him, 'Wish for
anything.' So he will ask his Lord, and he will wish for a great number of things, for Allah Himself
will remind him to wish for certain things by saying, "(Wish for) so-and-so.'

When there is nothing more to wish for, Allah will say, 'This is for you, and its equal (is for you)
as well.'

Abu Dharr reported that some of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (SAW)
said to him:

"O Messenger of Allah, the rich have taken away all the rewards. They observe the
prayer as we do, and they fast as we do, and they give sadaqah (charity) from their
wealth." Upon this he (saas) said: "Has not Allah made things for you to give away in
charity? Verily in every tasbih (Subhanallah) there is a sadaqah, every takbir (Allahu
Akbar) is a sadaqah, every tahmid (Alhamdulillah) is a sadaqah, every tahlil (La ilaaha
illallah) is a sadaqah, enjoining of good is a sadaqah, forbidding of evil is a sadaqah,
and having intimacy with your wife is a sadaqah. They (the Companions) said: "O
Messenger of Allah, is there a reward for him who satisfies his passion among us?" He
replied: "Tell me, if he were to devote it to something forbidden, would it not be a sin
on his part? Hence, if he were to devote it to something lawful, he shall have a
reward."

Beneficial Lessons

The great interest of the Sahaba in good deeds and their sadness for what they could not
achieve of good deeds.
o They always competed with each other in doing good deeds.
Encouragement to Uluw al-Himah (Higher concerns)
o Himmah that we have. For ex. what kind of car, job, dress etc.
o Uluw al-Himmahto be thinking of higher stages that will help us on the Day of
Judgment.
o The sahabas were worried about Ajr.
Evidence here to support those who say that the wealthy and thankful is better than the poor
and patient.
o Best of the people are those who have knowledge and money who spend both in the
way of Allah (SWT)
The mercy of Allah in making the doors of good many.
o You can make to jannnah thorugh many ways. For example: fast, pray, obedience to
parents.
Performing the halal with the intention of protecting yourself from the haraam turns many a
mundane act into an act of worship (Nawawi)
o A lot of people will enter Jannah through their akhlaq to their wives.

Doing justice between two people is a sadaqah; assisting a man to mount his
animal, or lifting up his belongings onto it is a sadaqah; a good word is a sadaqah;
every step you take towards prayer is a sadaqah; and removing harmful things from

Beneficial Lessons
Understanding the true meaning of thankfulness (saying Alhamdulillah)
o A lot of times we want to thank Allah (SWT) and we dont know how to.
o Intention to thank Allah (SWT) in salah .
o Ibn Hajr said: Thankfulness is avoiding sin, avoiding what is sinful is taqwa.
o Sometimes we can do certain deeds but with multiple intention.
1. Perform the obligations and avoid the sin.
o One of the ways to prevent yourself from sin, is to think to yourself how can I do this
while Allah (SWT) has done so much for me?
o ARE we avoiding sin out of thankfulness to Allah (SWT)?
o Thankfulness is to be used of obedience to Allah (SWT)
o The recommended aspect of thankfulness is to do voluntary deeds and to avoid that
which is disliked.
What are the small bones? Their significance?
o Small bones of the hands and feet. In one finger there are 3 bones.
o We can do a lot with our hands and feet. We are thanking Allah (SWT) for this blessing
that no other creature has.
o These bones are a small blessing in comparsion to the bigger ones that we are given i.e.
heart; if Prophet Muhammad (SAW) told us to be thankful for the small then how much
should you be thanking Allah SWT for the bigger blessings?
The excellence of being equitable and just
o There is a great excellence in justice
o Allah (SWT) says surah 49:9
o Establishing relation between two people. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: indeed the
people who are just/fair they will be on the pulpits of light on the Day of Judgment and
they are the people who used to be fair amongst their family and those who have the
control over.
o In the third ayah of Suratul Nisaa:
Allah (SWT) says: And if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphan-
girls, then marry (other) women of your choice, two or three, or four but if you fear that you
shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one or (the captives and the slaves)
that your right hands possess. That is nearer to prevent you from doing injustice.

The greatness of establishing peace between two people
o Hadith in Masnad AhmadProphet Muhammad (SAW) said should I not tell you that
which is better in status than fasting prayer, and sadaqah? They said what ya rasool
Allah. He said: Establishing peace between two people.
o Opposite of establishing peace is nameemah (gossip) real understanding of nameemah
is to say something to divide two people.
o Abu Imamah said: I will walk 2 miles to visit sick people and walk 3 miles to bring the
peace two people.
o Scholars Whoever wants to have a status of worshiper should bring justice between
two people
o [Abid is the one who is known for worship] Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: Scholars
are like a ful moon and a abid is like a star because abid benifts himself only but
scholars benefit many.
The import and reward of helping a fellow Muslim.
The value of good speech.
The importance and reward of walking to the masjid
o 3 actions through which Allah (SWT) erases all sins and raises the degree is perfecting
the wudu in the difficult situation [i.e. cold weather, when you are angry, in hot weather
with hot water], walking to Masjid. Also, waiting in the prayer area for the next prayer.
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: if you take a step in the masjid, one step gives you
good deed and next step erases your sins and another narration until you go back {even
when you go back home you will get the same reward}
The importance of removing something harmful from the road and the great rewards associated
with it
o Iman is of 60 branches the lowest branch of the iman is to remove something harmful
from the road.
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: Indeed I saw a man enjoying himself in jannah only
because he removed the tree that was causing harm to the people.
o Lowering the gaze helps us look for the things to remove that might be harmful.
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: A person removed a branch from thr road so Allah
(SWT) forgave all his sin.
These past 2 ahadith demonstrate the great Mercy of Allah in providing us with multiple and
various ways of doing good such that each person can do what suits their talents best.

Abu Dharr narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said: "When you get up in the morning, charity is
due from every one of your joints. There is charity in every ascription of glory to Allah (saying
subhanallah), there is charity in every declaration of His Greatness (saying Allahu akbar)
there is charity in every utterance of praise of Him (saying Al hamdulillah) there is charity in
every declaration that He is the only true God (saying laa ilaha illallah)there is charity in
enjoining good and there is charity in forbidding evil. Two Rakah of Duha (Forenoon prayer) is
equal to all this (in reward)".
(Muslim)

Another name for duha is ishraq. 10 to 15 min after sunrise and goes until there is no shadow when the
sun is on zenith. [15 min after fajr and 15 min before thuhr]
Three times in which salah is prohibited:
- Immediately at sunrise
- Immediately at sunset
- And at the time zenith
These times are forbidden but not forbidden for fard salah if you have to make up. Prophet Muhammad
(SAW) said: the prayer of a repentant person is better when its hot. Also, Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
said: if you wait after fajr till sunrise by praising and reading Quran and pray two rakah then he will get
the ajr (reward) for hajj and umrah.
- Ibn Abbas said: whenever bidaa is created a sunnah is disappeared.
- Ibn Taymiyyah would sit in the masjid after salah for hours, and he would say that this is my
food for my salah.
- Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: Whoever says
, _- =, v ;=| = ,., ,,-| _,.| , .| , v _v , _= -r , 3 times will not be harmed.
- Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: the chapter regarding duha mentions to pray 2 rakah and max
8 rakahs.
- Nobody guards duha except the repentant ones.

Narrated Abu Dharr: The Prophet (SAW) said, Every morning there is upon the bones and joints of any
of you a charitable act. Every tasbeehah is a charity, every tahmeedah is a charity, every tahleelah is a
charity and every takbeerah is a charity. Ordering good is a charity, removing evil is a charity. To fulfill
that charity it is sufficient to pray two rakahs of duha. (Muslim)
In the two rakahs of Duha, all of the bodily parts are used (including the tongue) to suffice the
charities!
The prayer of gratitude (shukr) is the prayer of the repentant.
Dont forget those who are close to you and deserve your love and care!

answered. He said: "Consult your heart. Righteousness is that about which the
soul feels tranquil and the heart feels tranquil, and sin is what creates
restlessness in the soul and moves to and fro in the breast, even though people
give you their (fatwa) legal opinion (in your favor) and continue to do so."
[A good hadith transmitted from the Musnads of the two Imams Ahmad bin
Hanbal and Al-Daarimi]

Narrator: An-Nawwas ibnu Sam'aan
One of the Companions of ahl as-Suffah (poor Muslims who lived in the back of the Masjid);
lived one year in Madinah away from his family who were in Syria; to learn from the Prophet
(SAW) by listening to the questions that was being asked him and the answers to them.
He narrated 17 ahadeeth.
Waabisa was among the Companions who came to the Prophet (SAW) in the 9

year of Hijrah
and accepted Islam.
He died in Greater Syria.

Beneficial Lessons
Another encouragement to good manners is that its one of the essentials of righteousness.
o Another benefit of good manner
Heaviest on the scales.
Guaranteed the best house in Jannah
First thing Prophet Muhammad (SAW) started teaching to people.
He, who has a good heart, will feel wavering upon sin.
o Even if the people give you a fatwa.
o If you are getting a fatwa from someone and your heart doesnt accept it, then there is
something wrong, it is not birr.
There should be no wavering if good evidence is provided from a trusted scholar; this is not
praiseworthy.

and that you listen and obey, even if a slave is made a ruler over you. He among
you who lives long enough will see great controversy. So you must keep to my
Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the righteous rightly-guided successors, holding
on to them as if with your molar teeth. Beware of newly-introduced matters, for
every innovation (bid'ah) is an error.

(Narrated by Abu Dawud & Al-Tirmidhi who said it is a good, authentic hadith.)

Narrator: al-'Irbad Ibn Saariyah
Another member of ahl as-Suffah, and an early convert to Islam who used to say that he was the

He died in Hems, Greater Syria in 75 AH.

Beneficial Lessons
From among the characteristics of the believers upon hearing admonition, is fear and weeping
from sins.
o Sign of the healthy heartaffected by admonishing and teary eyes
o Surahtul Anfaal, Ayah 2 The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned,
feel a fear in their hearts and when His Verses (this Quran) are recited unto them, they
(i.e. the Verses) increase their Faith; and they put their trust in their Lord (Alone);
The benefits of weeping from the fear of Allah:
Some people in taraweeh prayer are out of control. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) cried in really
deep.
Recitation meaningful which is the recitation that goes along with the emotions associated with
it. For ex. when person comes across the ayahs of hell-fire he strongly fears it.
1. Source of protection from Hell-fire
a. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that hell-fire will not take the person who cries
because of fear of Allah (SWT).
2. Means of achieving shade on Day of Judgment
a. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: Amongst the 7 people who will get a shade is
the one who is alone and his eyes will shed tears because of fear of Allah (SWT),
loving Allah (SWT) or due to the blessings of Allah (SWT).
3. It is among the characteristics of the Companions.
a. Umar (RA) had two black lines on his face because of crying.
b. Uthman (RA) He would cry so much that his full beard would get so wet.

Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe (in the Oneness of
Allah - Islamic Monotheism) to be affected by Allah's Reminder (this Quran), and
that which has been revealed of the truth, lest they become as those who
received the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] before (i.e.
Jews and Christians), and the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts
were hardened? And many of them were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to
Allah).
How do we cry?
o The kids learn a new language, then we teach them vocabulary. So, learning the
Vocabulary of the Quran would help you understand what is said in the Quraan.
o There are certain surahs you have memorized, memorized them by understanding the
meaning.
Sahaba would keep reciting the same ayah again and again until their meaning
affect them truly.
o Pray salah with full khushu.
o Abu Bakr (RA) said: if you cant cry, make your self cry.
Sulayman Att-Tughani said: Everything has a sign, and the sign of knowing that Allah (SWT) has
neglected you and ignored is that you stop crying.
Red Flag moment farewell advice of the Prophet.
The obligation of following the ruler unless he commands disobedience to Allah an obligation
supported in the Quran, Sunnah and consensus.
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: Even if a ameer is a slave, you should still obey.
The only way the slave can become a khalifa is only by force. Because one of the
condition for one of the khalifa is to be free but Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
didnt tell us to fight him.
o Reasons
Going against them creates corruption and evil which is far in excess from that
which will come from our leaders own sins
Be patient and make duaa for them.
It gives us reward.
Remember, Allah (SWT) gave them power over us.
Whoever disobeys the leader dies the death of ignorance.
Importance of following the Sunnah in times of Fitnah.
Who is meant by the term Rightly guided Caliphs?
o There are two opinions:
All the sahaba
Some say that the four khulafaa are different from others because their
behavior was more close to Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
A note about the evil and misguidance of innovation.

On the authority of Muadh ibnu Jabal who said:
I said: "O Messenger of Allah (SAW), tell me of an act which will take me into Paradise
and will keep me away from Hell fire." He said: "You have asked me about a great
matter, yet it is easy for him for whom Allah Almighty makes it easy. You should
worship Allah, associating nothing with Him, you should perform the prayers, you
should pay the zakah, you should fast the month of Ramadan, and you should make
the pilgrimage to the House." Then he (SAW) said:" Shall I not direct you to the gates
of goodness? Fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire; and
the praying of a man in the depth of night." Then he recited: "Who forsake their beds
to cry unto their Lord in fear and hope, and spend of that We have bestowed upon
them. No soul knows what is kept hidden for them of joy, as a reward for what they
used to do". [32:16-17] Then he said: Shall I not tell you of the peak of the matter, its
pillar, and its uppermost part?" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "The peak
of the matter is Islam; the pillar is prayer; and its uppermost part is jihad." Then he
said: "Shall I not tell you of that which controls all of that?" I said: Yes, O Messenger
of Allah", and he took hold of his tongue and said: "Restrain this." I said: "O Prophet of
Allah, will what we say be held against us?" He said: "May your mother be bereaved of
you! Is there anything that throws people on their faces - or he said on their noses -
into the Hell-fire other than the jests of their tongues?
(Tirmidhi, who said it was a fine and sound hadith)
Beneficial Lessons:
The beginning of this hadith magnifies the concern of the Sahaaba about how to get into
Jannah.
Allah SWTs Afw, overlooking of sins, and His Mercy gets you into Jannah. If Allah SWT took
us to account, we would all be in hell-fire.
On the Day of Judgment, Allah SWT will ask about those sins which He covered in the
dunyah for us. A person will think they are doomed, but since their sins were concealed in
this dunyah, Allah SWT, out of His Mercy, wont reveal them in akhirah (hereafter).
Our actions are a testimony of our faith, and because of those actions, Allah SWT has mercy
on us.
In Suratul Ankaboot, Allah SWT states, Those who make jihad (strive) for Allahs Sake, We
will make matters easy for Him.
o Jihaad consists of striving against our nafs (oneself), shaytaan, and the dunyah.
This will result in Guidance from Allah SWT.
o One must strive to learn the various ways of earning reward from Allah SWT
(through the gates of goodness).
The voluntary/extra deeds are the ones that keep getting the heart and soul closer to Him.
Purification of the soul results in goodness for us.
o Siyaam (fasting): There is nothing like it and Allah SWT rewards it unlike other
deeds (Riyaa is lessened in fasting unlike other deeds). Fasting is for me and I
will reward for it as I wish. Hadith Qudsi. The reward is anywhere from ten to
seven hundred times. In a hadith, the Prophet Muhammad said, I encourage
you to fast for there is nothing like it. The Sunnah is to fast on Mondays and
Thursdays, and from the 13
th
to 15
th
of the Islamic month. The latter are referred
to as white days.
o The virtues of the night prayer:
Allah SWT has praised them in the Quraan saying:
- _ .,, ,|__ - -| ,- ,,,_ .,-=, _-=| - ,,,, ,16, | `- ,,| _-| - ` ,-

blissful delights, as yet hidden, await them [in the life to come] as a reward for all that
they did.
[Soorat As- Sajdah: 16-17]

o Guarding the tongue is the source of all good and being careless with it is the
source of great danger.
Whoever guards it has a guarantee of Jannah
A person may speak a word, not realizing what he is saying, and he will

It was narrated on the authority of Abi Tha'labah Al-Khushani Jurthum ibn Nashir that
the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:
"Verily Allah the Exalted has prescribed the obligatory deeds, so do not neglect them;
He has set certain limits, so do not go beyond them; He has forbidden certain things,
so do not partake in them; and He has said nothing about certain things, out of mercy
towards you, and not out of forgetfulness, so do not go inquiring into these."
(A good (hasan) hadith reported by Al-Daraqutni and others)

NARRATOR: ABU THALABA JURTHUM IBN NASHIR
He is a companion who accepted Islam on the way to the Campaign of Khaibar.
Was among the Companions who shunned the fitnah that occurred between the
Companions at the end of Uthmaans life.
It is narrated that he died in Sajdah during qiyaamul-layl while living in Greater Syria in
75 AH.
He narrated 40 ahadith.
Beneficial Lessons:
Hadith is actually weak, hence, it will not be discussed in detail.
It discusses the matter where Allah SWT does not speak about an issue, and how
excessive questioning is disliked by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) for fear that it might
lead to further commands and prohibitions.

This is a weak hadith but its a good definition for taqwa. The Prophet did not like too many
questions because some people some things would become obligatory, i.e. something that
wasnt obligatory became obligatory.
In Imaam Nawawis time, it was considered hasan (good).
Action Items
This hadith presents another way of looking at the definition of taqwa.

A man came to the Prophet (SAW) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, direct me to an act
which if I do it, Allah will love me and the people will love me." He (SAW) answered:
"Be indifferent to the material world and Allah will love you; be indifferent to what
people possess and they will love you."
(A good hadith related by Ibn Majah and others with good chains of authorities)

NARRATOR: SAHL IBN SAD
A Companion from among the Ansaar from the tribe of al-Khazraj.
He was originally named Huzn (grief) and the Prophet (SAW) changed his name to Sahl
(ease).
He was 15 yrs old at the death of the Prophet (SAW).
He was nearly 100 years old when he died in 91 AH, among the last of the Companions
to die in Madinah.
He narrated 188 ahadith.
Beneficial Lessons:
This is another hadith that is weak and was not discussed in detail.
Zuhd means asceticism; its an act of the heart as mentioned by Sulaymaan ad-Daaraani.
It has two aspects:
o Realization that all provision comes from Allah SWT.
o That losses in this world do not much affect such a person because their true
goal is the Hereafter
Zuhd in this world is where one does not despair because of what he missed in this
world nor does he rejoice because of what he is given of it. [Wahb ibn al-Warad]
Non-Islamic Zuhd is forbidding upon oneself the lawful, choosing life of poverty and
refusal to work.

In Nawawis time it was narrated as hasan.
Explanation for Zuhd:
Today, the best way to learn a language is through the Rosetta stone software. Instead of
saying a book is kitaab, an image of kitaab is shown, and the word is added to the persons
vocabulary. Hence, when a person sees kitaab, instead of thinking book first and kitaab
second, one can think of the Arabic word right away.
Saw someone combing hair with his hand he doesnt need comb through it away. He saw
someone drinking water with their hand so he realized he didnt need cup. Zuhd is to leave
everything that will not help you in the Hereafter. Missing ones salah should give a feeling like
its the end of the world as if your bank account was suddenly emptied out. The trials of this
world are light on the Zaahid.
Impermissibility of Non-Islamic zuhd:
There is a story of a man who chooses to not work or use any means to provide for himself,
thinking that Allah would take care of him. He resolved to not doing anything after watching a
bird with a broken wing being taken care of by a healthy bird. A scholar said, Why choose to be
the broken wing? Why be the poor one when you could have been the one working to help
the poor, the ones who cant find work, the widows who are struggling, the orphans who have
no one to fend for them?
Shaykh AbdulQader Al-Jilani said he was walking one night and this magnificent throne
appeared in the sky and it was full of light. Then he was told that the reached such a high level
that salah is no longer required upon him. AbdulQader Al-Jilani spit at it. Shaytaan appeared
then he said, Ya AbdelQader, you were the only one who was able to pass this test. Many
before you have been fooled. Then he spit at shaytaan. He did this because he said I was not
good. It is by the mercy of Allah SWT that I have goodness.
Action Items
Dont tie your heart to the dunyah (though respect and appreciation for the provision
from Allah SWT has to be there)

It was related on the authority of Abu Sa'eed Sa'd bin Malik bin Sinan al-Khudri that
the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:
"There should be neither harming nor returning harm."
(An excellent hadith which Ibn Majah, Al-Daraqutni and others related as of sound
isnad, but which Malik related in his Muwatta' as of broken isnad, from 'Amr bin
Yahya, from his father, from the Prophet (SAW) but dropping (the name of) Abu
Saeed.
[This hadith has lines of transmission which strengthen one another (so that it may be
regarded as of sound isnad)].

NARRATOR: ABU SAEED AL-KHUDRI
A Companion from among the Ansaar from the tribe of al-Khazraj.
He accepted Islam as a young boy (11) with his father.
He was one of the most knowledgeable of the Companions and became one of the
major teachers of Hadith to the Tabieen.
He died in Madinah in 64 AH.
He narrated 1170 ahadith with over one hundred being found in the two Sahihs.

Beneficial Lessons:
From the text, we can see that there is no harm also in religion as Allah SWT said :
- =,, = -,| ,,- - _-
Allah does not want to place you in difficulty.
{Soorat Al-Maidah 5:6}
The hadith doesnt specify about any one deed, thus all harm is condemned.
From the objectives of Islam is the prevention of harm before it happens and its removal
after it occurs.
It is an encouragement for the believer to respect others and to be concerned about
their welfare.
It is a general principle in Islam that anything that leads to harm will in of itself be
forbidden.

fortunes and lives of [other] people, but the burden of proof is on the claimant,
and the taking of an oath is incumbent upon him who denies."

(Hadith Hasan related by Al-Bayhaqi and others)

Beneficial Lessons

From among proofs are witnesses, and their requirements are
o Puberty
o Sanity
o Ability to speak
o Islam
o Righteousness.

The seriousness of swearing a false oath: He who misappropriates the right of a Muslim
by taking a false oath, Allah will condemn him to the fire of Hell and will forbid Jannah
for him.'' A person asked: "O Messenger of Allah, even if it is something insignificant?''
He replied, "Yes, even if it is the twig of the Arak tree. (Muslim)
o Even the smallest oath is a big deal
o Do not swear lightly

Among the objectives of the Shariah is the protection of life and property.

That peoples love for money is severe and leads to sin.
o People often are willing to swear false testimony if that will allow them to gain
something in this dunyah.

Different Types of Witnesses
o Prior to Islam, women were not given the right to testify about anything.
o Islam provides the right of testimony to women- this was the first time a woman
was allowed any role in a transaction.
o Zina (adultery) requires four male witnesses. The testimony of women is not
used in the case of zina. If four men can see this act, it is shameless.
o Issues of divorce, nikkah, and rajaa require two men.
o Testimony regarding birth, breastfeeding, and virginity require one female
witness. No man can testify about this.

(SAW) says:
"Whosoever of you sees an evil action, let him change it with his hand; and if he is
not able to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his
heart; and that is the weakest of faith.
(Muslim)

Commanding Good and Forbidding Evil
What is the ruling on this deed?
o Fard kifaaya
o Fard ayn if you are the most learned in the community
Part of commanding good and forbidding evil includes having knowledge.
The Prophet (SAW) said, You will command good and forbid evil and if you dont do it,
Allah will put people in power over you who will oppress you and then you will make
duaa to Him and He will not save you.
The Prophet (SAW) said: "You will order what is right and forbid what is wrong or Allah
will empower over you an oppressive ruler who does not respect you elders nor have
mercy on you young ones. The best of you will call Allah SWT against them but He will
not respond to them. You will seek help, but no help will be found. You will ask
forgiveness, but you will not be forgiven."

Statements of the Salaf
o Hudaifa was asked about the walking dead and he replied, It is the one who sees
the evil and doesnt oppose it with his hand, mouth or heart.
o We have desensitized ourselves to too many things (i.e. when you see alcohol in
the grocery store, do you ever feel anything in your heart? When was the last
time your hated it in your heart?) The hearts are dead; we no longer feel.
o Sufiyan at-Thaur said, Sometimes I see something evil and I dont do anything
about it and, as a result, I find myself urinating blood. This was the harm that
befell him because of his sin.
This happened to him, but it does not happen to us because he was
affected by not forbidding the evil. His heart was alive.
o Action: Bring your heart back to life! When we see haraam, we should try to
change it, and we should at least hate it in our hearts.
Ismail ibn Amr stated, Whoever neglects commanding good and forbidding evil out of
fear of creation, the creation will not respect him. Even if he tells his son to do
something, his son does not do it and laughs at him.

Merits of this excellent act:

1. The ultimate objective of the Messengers.

Punishments Associated with Neglecting this Act:

1. Neglecting it is a trait of the hypocrites

| -, `- ,,=-, =| ., ,,,=,| .,=,, =-| - .,,, |, .-|, ,,,. -| ,. . ,

The hypocrites, men and women, are one from another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-

(people) from Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and
they close their hands [from giving (spending in Allah's Cause) alms]. They have forgotten
Allah, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the Fasiqun (rebellious,
disobedient to Allah).
{Soorat At-Tawbah 9:67}
2. Brings about punishment in dunyah.
3. Duaa will not be answered
4. Brings about Allahs curse on such people. Allah SWT says:
,,- , _.,- .. ..| _- ,=, _, - ,=| -| .=-, , ,=- , c|. ,78, | ,

Those among the Children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed by the tongue of

disobeyed (Allah and the Messengers) and were ever transgressing beyond bounds.
They used not to forbid one another from Al-Munkar (wrong, evil-doing, sins,
polytheism, disbelief) which they committed. Vile indeed was what they used to do.
{Soorat Al-Maidah 5:78-79}

Beneficial Lessons

From the conditions of this act is ability, knowledge, gentleness, patience and dignified
upon abuse; Allah SWT says:

c,=| - _- ,= | - - =-|, -| =| ,|| _, , _,-|| ;- - c|. .,
O my dear son! Establish worship and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity, and
persevere whatever may befall thee. Lo! that is of the steadfast heart of things. [Soorat
Luqman 31:17]

Ibnul Qayyim: Four stages of commanding good and forbidding evil:
1. Remove the evil and replace with the opposite (something good)
2. Reduce the evil
3. Replace it with something similar (this usually defeats the purpose)
4. Remove the evil and replace it with something worse

The first two stages are beneficial. The 3
rd
stage is matter of ijtihad (struggling for the
best) because sometimes it is good and sometimes it is not. The 4
th
stage is not allowed.
If we start commanding good and forbidding evil as a community, there will be a
numerous changes and rewards.
o If you are on the road of dawah and there are flowers around you (meaning
there is no trouble) then you are on the wrong road; the road to giving dawah is
a road with a lot of difficulties.
o Our job is to deliver the message in a nice, effective way.
o Allah SWT is the one who guides the hearts.

but be you, O servants of Allah, brothers. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim: he
neither oppresses him, nor does he abandon him, nor does he look down upon
him. Taqwa is right here (and he pointed to his chest three times). It is evil enough
for a man to look down upon his Muslim brother. The entirety of a Muslim for
another Muslim is inviolable: his blood, his property, and his honor."
(Muslim)

Al-Hasad - Envy
Hasad: This means that you wish a blessing that someone else has to be removed. You
wish for the other person to no longer have it and wish it for yourself instead. This is
very evil.
Sometimes a person may raise the price of merchandise when he has no intention of
buying it
Clearly forbidden in the Quran, Sunnah, Consensus
From the attributes of the disbelievers
o Many of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish that if they
could turn you away as disbelievers after you have believed, out of envy from
their ownselves, even after the truth (that Muhammad is Allah's Messenger)

1. It prevented Iblees from prostrating to Adam.
o This jealousy caused him to be thrown out of Jannah
2. It prevented some of Quraish from accepting Prophet (SAW)
3. It prevented many of the Madinah Jews from belief
4. It resulted in the trials to Yusuf and his father
Suffiyan ibn Deenar was asked about the qualities of the people who came before us that
made them so good. He responded, Their actions were not so great but their hearts
were pure.
The Prophet stated that Abdullah bin Salam was going to be granted Jannah. Omar ibn
al-Aas stayed with him for three days to observe him but realized he did not do anything
special. He asked him and Abdullah stated, When I go to sleep each night, I do not keep
any hatred against any Muslim in my heart.
If you truly seek Allahs forgiveness, you must purify your heart from all jealousy

Beneficial Lessons

Ways the Shariah protects against hatred:
1. By forbidding what leads to it: alcohol and intoxicants, gossip and slander, sale over
sale/engagement
2. Commanding what creates love: Imaan = love, gifts, the salaam, to say I love you,
brotherhood rights
o Prophet Muhammad (SAW) told us to give gifts and it will increase love between
us. [Saheeh Bukhari]
o "None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for
himself." (Bukhari and Muslim)
o The great sin of boycotting another Muslim
Leads to the Hellfire
As serious as shedding his blood
The most beloved thing to Iblees: Jabir reported that Allahs Messenger
said, Iblees places his throne upon water; he then sends detachments
(for creating dissension) ; the nearer to him in tank are those who are
most notorious in creating dissension. One of them comes and says: I did
so and so. And he says: You have done nothing. Then one amongst them
comes and says: I did not spare so and so until I sowed the seed of discord
between a husband and a wife. The Satan goes near him and says: You
have done well. Amash said: He then embraced him. (Muslim)
Delays the forgiveness of Allah SWT.
The better one is he who initiates the salaam: Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: It is not
acceptable for a Muslim to boycott his brother for more than three days and if he dies in
a state of boycotting another, he enters the Hell Fire. If he boycotts his brother for a
year, it is as if he shed his blood. The better of the two is the one who enjoins salaam
first. (Sahih Abi Dawood)
It is permissible to boycott someone in matters of the deen if it is beneficial (Kab ibn
Malik)
Example of undercutting sale of a Muslim?
o Undercut when the transaction is always agreed upon
o Undercutting someones engagement
The majority of scholars are of the opinion that this goes for both Muslims and non-
Muslims (Islamic justice)

guides him to learn his deen.
6. The Angels lower their wings to the student of knowledge.
7. They are the inheritors of the Prophets.
Scholars are inheritors of Prophets and the honor is greater than the honor of a
worshiper.
8. Is greater in status than the worshippers.
From the life of Imam NawawiHe has accomplished so much in Ibadah even while
learning.
All of the scholar agree that the best deed to do after the obligatory deed is seeking
knowledge.

The virtue of sitting in the masjid to learn and teach the Quran is the best act ( ,= - '-

1. The tranquility descends upon them.
2. They are enveloped in Allahs mercy.
3. The Angels surround them.
4. Allah mentions them to those in His presence.

Encouragement to read the Quran with understanding.
Your family lineage will not benefit you in the Hereafter if your deeds are deficient.
o It is imperative upon the reciter of the Quran to be humble.
o Hasan Al-Basari says: how will your heart soften with the recitation of the Quran
while all you care about is to reach the end of the surah?
o If you dont have the good deed to support you, there is nothing that can help you.

You are responsible for yourself; not even your pious father, family, spouse and so on can
intercede for you. A martyr (Shaheed) is allowed to intercede for those Allah SWT allows him
to, who He is pleased with.

The reward is based on the type of action. ,-| - - -, If you perform your actions with
ihsaan, Allah will reward you. The type is the same but the quality is of course of a different
nature. Also, when helping others, Allah will help you on the Day of Judgment; the Day that we
will need the most of help.

Your supposed to prefer your brother over everything except reward, because on the Day of
Judgment everyone will say nafsi! Nafsi!

If you cover up the sins of another person, Allah SWT will cover up your sins on the Day of
Judgment. Does this apply in all circumstances? No. For example, a person who publicizes his
sin, then you arent obliged to cover up for him. Whoever tries to expose the sins of a Muslim
then Allah SWT will expose him and embarrass him even in his own house. For instance, you go
to someones house and they let you use the computer to check your email and you find
pornographic material was minimized. You can do one of 2 things: advise the brother that its
wrong and he can get help, or go out and spread the word. By doing the latter, you have done
harm to the brother. Covering up also allows people to remember the good of a person and not
the bad.

Action Items
- Dont miss an opportunity to help one another. Small or big, it can give a rise on the Day of
Judgment.
- Conceal sins / fight evil.

Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) related from his Lord
(glorified and exalted be He):

"Verily Allah has recorded the good deeds and the evil deeds." Then he clarified that:
"Whosoever intends to do a good deed but does not do it, Allah records it with
Himself as a complete good deed; but if he intends it and does it, Allah records it with
Himself as ten good deeds, up to seven hundred times, or more than that. But if he
intends to do an evil deed and does not do it, Allah records it with Himself as a
complete good deed; but if he intends it and does it, Allah records it down as one
single evil deed."

(Bukhari & Muslim each in his Sahih have thus related it)

"So look my brother, may Allah guide us, and take note of how great is the
kindness of Allah - may He be exalted! Reflect on this, how that His saying
"with Himself" points to His great care with regard to it, and His saying
"complete" is for emphasis, not to point to the intensity of His care with
regard to it. With regard to the evil deed which one intended but then
abandoned, He says: "Allah records it with Himself as a complete good deed",
emphasizing this by the word "complete" (kamilah); whereas if he performs
it, He records it down as "one evil deed", where by the word "one" He
emphasizes its being made little of, since He does not emphasize it here by
the word "complete". So to Allah be praise and grace. Glory be to Him! Our
praising Him can never be enough. And with Allah is all success."

Beneficial Lessons
Deeds are rewarded from 10 times to 700 to even more, depending upon the
excellence of the deed and the sincerity associated with it (Ibn Rajab)
As for he who intends a good deed, it means to have the idea to do it associated w/
determination (not thought)
The one who intends a sin but doesnt do it is the one whose taqwa prevented him from
acting out on his intention not the one who was circumstantially unable who in that case
gets full weight of the sin by intention
,- , -' ,, .,, If he left a sin for My Sake, write it for me as a good deed.
Narration in Bukhari
Allah (SWT) takes care of your good deeds. The word complete makes it something big
but the word one makes it something very small, insignificant.
Back to niyah we come, and the key word is level of determination.
When you leave the deed for the fear of Allah (SWT) thats one you get the good deed.
Consistently intend good,,,when you call the adhan every thing that hears you will
witness for you on the Day of Judgment

Allah SWT records the good deed with Himself!

When someone intends to do a good deed and leaves it, the reward is based on the level of
determination (goes back to the beginning of the class). You cant just sit back and yawn,
thinking man Id like to go to the Masjid and get reward for having gone to the Masjid. For
example, you intend to go to Masjid, do all sorts of good things, so you get ready, go out, and
discover your car is buried in snow because of sanitation pushing it to the side 5 times over; you
get the reward for all that you intended including the reward of all those steps and so on. Level
of determination there was you getting there.

The reward for making adhan and everyone that hears it; will testify for you on the Day of
Judgment. If you intend to make adhan, but you didnt get there on time, you will get the
reward for it In shaALLAH!

Action Items
- Catch yourself on the route to doing sins and stay away from it.
- Intend to do well and rush to it (to improve your level of determination)
- Intend to make adhan

On the authority of Abu Hurairah, who said that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

Allah the Almighty has said: "Whosoever shows enmity to a friend of Mine, I shall be
at war with him. My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more beloved by
Me than the religious duties I have obligated upon him, and My servant continues to
draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him. When I love him, I
am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with
which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask something of Me, I
would surely give it to him and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him
it."

(Saheeh Al- Bukhari)

Beneficial Lessons

To be wali 1. Imaan, 2. Taqwah (not divine selection)
What is a wali? Surah Yunus: 62-63 the awliya of Allah (SWT) shall have no fear nor
will they grief they are those who have taqwa. [to do what Allah (SWT) has told us to do
and to avoid what Allah (SWT) has told us to avoid]
To remember that so long as you have Taqwah, that Allah SWT will protect you in the
end even if you are tested a little.
You dont know where the rahma is coming from, so stay patient over the trial.
That the performing of the obligatory in the most complete way is the best way to attain
Allahs love.
You want Allah (SWT) to love you , do your salah the best way.
The best thing after the obligatory deeds is to seek knowledge.
Umar (RA) said: the best deeds are three 1. Do the obligatory deeds the best way 2.
Waraleave that makes you doubtful due to fear of Allah (SWT) 3. To have a sincere
intention in regards to what Allah (SWT) has (Jannah)

The deeds vary in their excellence by their type
- Obligatory deeds are more beloved to Allah (SWT) than the voluntary.
- Some obligatory are more beloved than others. Salah is most beloved than zakah
- Ibn taymiyyahwhen it comes to morning, the best type of dhikr is reading Quran. You can
get close to Allah (SWT) however you can but you cant get closer more than except by
reciting the words of Allah (SWT). Quran is always good but at the morning time morning
dhikr is more beloved.
- All this requires you to learn.
Performing much of the voluntary deeds is a means of achieving a higher degree of
Allahs love
The virtue of persisting in the good ( ` , --= --, ) Allah (SWT) says: my servant
continues to draw near to me.thats why need to have routine, even we forget one day
we will still get reward for that.
Reciting little every day is better than reciting a lot once a week
The result of attaining Allahs love:
- You will receive the guidance of Allah (SWT)
- Try to look for the opportunities to gain reward..your limbs will work that way when Allah
(SWT) will guide you . The closer you get to Allah (SWT), He helps you to do good deeds.
- You started to see what pleases Allah (SWT).
When you see fitna, you can make duaa or hate it in the heart.
During fitnah, you cant see where right and wrong is; thats where we stop; we make
dua and take the example of Saad Ibn aby Waqas who said that I will stay back until the
matter is clear.

Best way to get closer to Allah SWT is via obligatory deeds. Better to do good 4 rakahs than 12
break-dancing/rakahs. Once you perform better in obligatory deeds you can increase in
voluntary! But, whats best after obligatory deeds? Seeking knowledge!

Best deeds are 3:
1. Do obligatory deeds the best way.
2. Wara. One of the best things in the deen is to leave things in fear of Allah SWT.
3. Sincere intention for what Allah has, i.e. Jannah. Doing everything you can to get to
Jannah.

Type and a category for deeds:
The most beloved of obligatory (fard) deeds is salah, then from there is zakah. How do you
know what is beloved? Its hrough seeking knowledge.

You can get close to Allah through anything, but you will never get closer to Him than through
His own words. The best thing to do before fajr, is to make istighfar. Also, when you pray,
lengthen it, when you make sujood make lots of duaa.

The most beloved thing to Allah SWT is something you do routinely even if it is a small
amount.

One of the indications of Allah SWTs love for you is that He helps you to do good deeds.

Reaching the stage of duaul mustajab (when duaa is accepted), is that Allah SWT responds to
it, by being routine in goodness. Moreover to have taqwa; to the point that your hands and feet
only goes towards good.

Question on sitting in times of fitnah yet commanded to forbid evil. You can make duaa, you
can also have the dislike for it in your heart and speak against it. But this doesnt mean jump to
or join a conclusion like, I think such and such is bad and that they cant keep doing evil if
theyre dead. No.

Action Items
- Seek knowledge
- Recite Quran as dhikr.
- Make istighfar before Fajr
- Increase in Ibadah. E.g. daily recitation of at least one page of the Quran)

"Allah has pardoned for my sake the mistakes and forgetfulness of my
community and that which they have done under compulsion.

(Hadith Hasan related by Ibn Majah,Al-Bayhaqi and others)

Beneficial Lessons
Allah doesnt punish us for unintended mistakes (opposite of intended), forgetting or
compulsion
- Examplescutting hair while in Ihram not knowing the rule; then there in no sin upon that
person.
- Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: if you eat or drink during fasting by mistakeAllah (SWT)
gives that food for you to eat.
- Allah (SWT) forgives us for what we dont know and we didnt intend.

Some examples pertaining to the Hadith:
- Although we are not accountable before Allah on the Day of Judgment we are still
accountable to others.
- The only exception to compulsion upon which there is consensus is the killing of a Muslim
which cannot be done.
- Another great example of Allahs mercy to us; someone who goes to Hajj and gets a haircut
while in Ihram but he didnt know about the prohibition. Is he still penalized? No.
- Another example; a new Muslim who talks during salah to tend to a child or something
that occurred to them. Does Allah SWT forgive them? Yes.

- Another example, when someone is fasting and was so thirsty and when they came across a
bottle of water and took a drink completely forgetting about fasting, doo they have to fast over
again? No, it is a blessing Allah SWT gave you.

What about missing salah from forgetfulness? If youre just watching t.v. or conducting business
and you forget? No. But if youre busy doing something good and forgot, then as soon as you
remember, quickly get up and pray.

The major exception in this hadith is killing. Say there is an army and they bring a Muslim, they
say kill this person (Muslim or otherwise) or I will kill you. Here, compulsion is not acceptable.

On the authority of Ibn 'Umar who said that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) took me by
the shoulder and said:

"Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveler." Ibn 'Umar used to say:
"When evening comes, do not expect to live till morning, and when morning comes,
do not expect to live till evening. Take from your health a preparation for your illness
and from your life for your death." (Bukhari)

There are so many verses in the Qur'an that make comparisons between the worldly life and
the Hereafter. The priority and emphasis is made on the Hereafter where it is described as the
real life and the worldly life as a life of nothing but entertainment and amusement. Allah says in
Surah al-An'am, Ayah 32: And the worldly life is not but amusement and diversion but the
home of Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah. Will you not then reason?
So, in Islam there is no nullification of life as some people may misunderstand. There is a
balance and adjustment between this life and the Hereafter. There should be no schism or what
Islam is - rahbanah (extremism). There should be no conflict between this life and the next life.
There is a kind of moderate conception about this life and the Hereafter.
Furthermore, the concept of 'ubudiyyah (worshipping Allah) is a comprehensive concept where
everything we do in this life, if it is guided by revelation and is done with a good intention,
becomes a form of worship even though it is a worldly matter. If the thing is done in
accordance with the teachings of shari'ah and the main guidelines of revelation, then there will
be the adjustment and the harmony between this life and the Hereafter. The Muslim's life in
this world and the Hereafter should be in total submission and devotion to the will of Allah
SWT.
The Muslim should establish a good life, improve his way of life and aim for the Hereafter at the
same time. By doing so, he is obeying Allah, being guided by His guidance and instructions. He
will still enjoy this life but at the same time whatever he does will be recorded by Allah as his
good deeds. Thus, he will get the pleasure of Allah SWT.

Commentary of al-Nawawi:
- This hadith is a foundational principle in limiting your hopes for this world and the attitude
of the believer to it.
- The example of the world given by the Prophet (SAW): I am only in this world like a rider

- Ibnul Qayyim Limited hopes is to remember the closeness of death, and the speed at
which life passes; and indeed this is among the most beneficial matters for the soul for it
leads it to take advantage of every opportunity (for good) and to fill the record.
Examples of the preparedness for death of the righteous:
- It is a must for every Muslim to rush to do good deeds before death comes to them and to
remember death often as the Prophet (SAW) instructed.
The righteous were always keen to exert their efforts in good before it was too late:

Allah the Exalted has said: 'O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me,
I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were
your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I
would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great
as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring
you forgiveness equal to it'."

(Recorded by Tirmithi, who said that it is a good and sound Hadith)
Here, the main message of the hadith is calling upon Muslims to repent sincerely to Allah SWT
and to seek His forgiveness suhanah.
There are ways in which a Muslim can be forgiven by Allah SWT:
1. Dua'a (to supplicate to Allah SWT)
2. Istighfar (seeking forgiveness), even if someone has committed many sins. What is
meant by seeking forgiveness is the Istighfar that is linked to repentance which in turn
also necessitates that the Muslim gives up committing sins and does not persist on
doing them. Istighfar is a form of worship.
3. Tawhid, which means that a Muslim should worship Allah SWT alone. Allah SWT should
be worshiped without associating or ascribing any partners with Him.
The realization of Tawhid is very important for all Muslims. This is the last portion of the hadith.
This is very significant for us as Muslims since this last portion summarizes the most important
thing in Islam and that is Tawhid. It is a message from Allah SWT to all Muslims to make sure
that their Tawhid is sincere and pure. It is important to realize that they should not ascribe any
partners with Allah SWT. By doing so, they are assured that they will receive the forgiveness of
Allah even if they have committed other sins.
