Melbourne Grammar School Modern

Architecture by John Wardle Architects

John Wardle Architects has completed a project of Melbourne Grammar School,
located in South Yarra, Victoria, Australia. It is a prominent Melbourne secondary
school, sparsely built around lush sportin fields, !here the student"s character is
de#eloped in competition. $he architect recei#ed the brief as the objecti#es to create a
ne! campus entry, consolidate theschool "s library facilities and pro#ide supportin
lecture theater and seminar room spaces to fore a ne! campus heart focused on learnin.
$he architecture design comprised of
a series of inter%lin&ed pa#ilions,
maintainin the continuation of the
scale and rythym of the school"s
frontae to 'omain (oad. )ach lin& is
la*ed encourain #isibility throuh
to the campus interior. Main entry
pro#ides a #ie! of the +uadranle
buildin !ea#in the old and ne!
toether #isually.
)ach pa#ilion has its o!n
indi#idual e,pression to the
public on 'omain (oad. $he

to!ard the street. (eflecti#e
glass louvers pro#ides t!o
functions- allo! cinematic
#ie!s to the ardens and at the
same time protectin some
pri#acy from the street.
Main body of the library
comprises a series of iant steel framed !indo!s of #aryin shapes !ith a series of
o#erlaid patterns to lass !ithin. $he patternin alludes to the random ashlar bloc& !or&
of the buildins on site. .rom the inside, the #arious !indo!s frame ser#es a different
#ie!s to the reenery arden beyond.
Main boo& collections
in the library are
stored in the boo& stac& pa#ilion !hich is clad in a burnished bric& !ith its o!n bond.
$he bond includes se#eral #ertical bric&s stac&ed on end and the main !all folds bac& to
hihliht these boo&%li&e bric&s set into the surface.
$he o#erall architecture design of the buildin offers an out!ard focused learnin for its
students as it captured the multitude of landscape and conte, tual #ie!s of the city. $he
boo& stac& pa#ilion opens !ith a massi#e !indo! to!ard the main sportin field. A lass
lin& for administrati#e functions brushes close to the intricate roof pediments and
/uoinin of the oriinal /uadranlebuildin.

$he desin concept is a sustainable buildin
anchors the campus arts precinct to become
a cultural resource for the reional
community. MGA 0artners is responsible
for the desin, documentation and
construction administration of the project, as
!ell as fundraisin support.
$he desin creates a dual identity !ithin a sinle buildin- the S!ope School of Music
and a 0erformin Arts 1enter. $o accomplish this, the t!o primary areas of the buildin
are united around a courtyard that ser#es as the front porch of the comple,. $he courtyard
creates a memorable ceremonial route into the buildin, immersin people in the art of
performance as they approach the buildin. It also offers a separation and respite from the
adjacent lare par&in lot ser#in this section of campus.
$he comple, is sited to create an enain path from the main campus. $he portion of he
buildin closest to main campus is the School of Music, !hose lare cur#in !all creates
a lyrical presence for the school. $his !all encloses the school"s library on the round
floor and music practice rooms on the upper floors, !hich fill the main !al& !ith sound
and life. Arri#in at the courtyard, #isitors proceed throuh a lass pa#ilion into the
lobby. $he lobby connects a 345%seat performance hall, a 675%seat recital hall and an art
allery. $hebuildin has been desined to e,actin acoustic standards both for the /uality
of sound !ithin each room and the control of sound bet!een rooms. In addition, as the
first uni#ersity structure desined to sustainability standards, thebuildin !ill ma&e use of
natural dayliht, hih performance enery systems, and en#ironmentally responsible
materials.

$he roof is shaped as the terrain folded up from the round. $he tilted !all to!ards south

$he three different years uses three different areas !ithin the plan, and there"s an
emphasis on the use of fle, ibility in spatial solutions and possibilities for multi use and
shared functions. 'ifferent parts of the school can be closed to create spaces that can be
used separately at niht time.
Dutside the school there are areas !ith different /ualities, both urban and reen areas A
