6.1 GENERAL
Dynami c l oads on foundations may be caused by the effects of
earthquakes or bomb blasts, by operations of machines, and by water
wave action. Earthquakes and water wave action induce predominantl y
hori zontal forces i n the superstructure, whi l e in the case of bomb blasts
the loads may be predominantl y vertical . An anal ysi s of the footing may
be made considering the dynamic forces to be equi val ent to the static
forces. For a more real i sti c pi cture, a dynami c anal ysi s should be
performed. In thi s chapter, conventional methods of analysi s are fi rst
presented and then dynamic anal yses are introduced. Pi l e foundations
are dealt wi th in Chap. 7 and machine foundations i n Chap. 9.
6.2 FAILURE ZONES BENEATH A SHALLOW CONTINUOUS FOOTING

A suggested arrangement of a plate-load test i s as fol lows: Mount a
Lazan-type osci l lator on a ri gid steel plate. Preferabl y, the wei ghts of

The posi ti on of eccentrics i s adj usted so that the desi red amount of

becomes negl i gibl e. About an hour may suffice for chis state to be

cl ays. The load increment may be appl ied in one step, up to the desi gn
l oad intensity for Stati c loads. After all settlement has occurred under
static l oads, the osci l l ator i s operated for 50 cycles onl y and settlement

A dynamic test i s performed in addi tion to a stati c-plate-l oad test i n a
new pit. The settlement of the foundati on S

i s then computed for the
dynami c case. If i t is wi thi n permi ssible l i mits, the desi gn is acceptable;
if it i s not wi thi n these l imits, the desi gn needs modification.
Hardl y any data that coul d serve as prel imi nary estimates are avai l able
on this subject. Sridharan (1962), Eastwood (1953), Converse (1953),
and Nagraj (1961) report dat a on settl ement of footings for different
combinations of stati c and dynami c l oads. The plate-load test suggested
above could be adopted and run wi th the routine plate-load test
(Prakash, 1974).
The frequency of vi brations of the osci ll ator should be far removed from
the natural frequency of the vi brator -soi l system. The natural frequency
may be estimated from principles di scussed i n Chap. 9.
6.5 EFFECT OF HORIZONTAL LOAD AND MOMENT
Let us consider water tower foundati on (Fi g. 6.6). Sei smic force can
then be considered to be acting at the center of gravi ty of the tower ful l
of water. Loads on the foundati on wi l l predominantl y consist of a
moment and a hori zontal thrust, in addi ti on t o a verti cal stati c load.

One of the fol lowi ng three cases may ari se, dependi ng on whether the
effects of moment are predominant as comported wi th the hori zontal
thrust, or reverse i s the case, or the effects of both types of load are
predominant.
1. If the effect of moment onl y i s predominant, the footing i s then an
eccentrical l y l oaded footing.
2. If the effect of thrust onl y i s important , the footi ng i s then under the
acti on of an i ncl ined central load. This may not hol d for most practi cal
cases.
3. If the effects of both moment and thrust are important , the footi ng i s
then subjected to an eccentri c i ncl ined l oad.
A brief anal ysi s of the footi ng for each of the three cases fol lows.
Eccentric Load on Footing
The moment M on the footi ng i s replaced by an eccentri c vertical load
so that eccentri ci ty e equals M/Q, where Q is the central vertical load
due to stati c dead and l i ve loads.
Fi gure 6.7 shows a footi ng under the acti on of a load Q acting wi th
eccentrici ty e. It i s known from principles of elementary strength of
material s that if e < B/6, the footing is in compressi on throughout. As e
exceeds B/6, there is loss of contact of the footing wi th the soi l for (3e-
B/2) porti on of the wi dth.

Thi s method suffers from the fact that onl y the ultimate beari ng capaci ty
i s anal yzed. A footing subj ected to moment wi l l al ways undergo some
ti l t. A new method for anal yzi ng the bearing capaci ty and the ti l t of such
footi ngs has been proposed by Prakash and Saran (1971, 1973).
New method of designing eccentrically loaded footings. An
anal ytical solution for determining the ultimate bearing capaci ty of a
strip footing under eccentric verti cal l oad has been developed, assuming
a one-sided fai lure (Saran, 1969; Prakash and Saran, 1971). In the
fi eld, it had been observed that fail ure footi ngs occurred by rotation.
The fai lure of the Transcona Grai n Elevator is a classic example of such
a fai lure (Prakash, et al., 1979). The results of beari ng capacity
computation have been expressed in the form of beari ng capacity

In order to estimate the settlements and til ts of eccentri cal l y l oaded
footi ngs, two-dimensional and three-dimensi onal modal tests were
conducted on dense and loose, dry sands. Two-dimensi onal tests were
conducted on 5-cm- and 10-cm-wi de footings. Three-dimensional tests
were conducted on 7.5-cm-, 10-cm, and 15-em-square footi ngs and 10-
cm-wi de rectangular footings wi th L/B ratios of 2, 3, and 4. These
footi ngs were tested at the surface as wel l as at depths equal to the
wi dths of the footi ngs. Footings were subj ected to one-way eccentri city
i n the transverse directi on of the footing. Surface footi ngs were tested
for the eccentri ci ties so that e/B ratios were 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4.

were conducted onl y up to chi s eccentrici ty. In practi ce, however,
foundati ons are desi gned wi th much smal ler eccentri city.

regarded as a tentati ve method for such a desi gn. I n predominantl y
noncohesi ve soi l s, the governing factor i s the settlement and not the
bearing capacity. Therefore, the data on whi ch the above procedure is
based need to be reworked to evolve a simpl er and possibl y more
rational procedure, parti cularl y for noncohesi ve soi ls.

Restoring Forces
The restoring forces consist of the shearing resistance along the rupture
surface, the inertia of the soil mass participating in motion, and the
resistance caused by displacement of the center of gravity of the soil
mass (Fig. 6.15b). The moments of these restoring forces about the

The static bearing capacity of a continuous footing along the failure
surface (Fellenius, 1927) is

6.8 DYNAMIC ANALYSIS FOR HORIZONTAL LOADS
Based on more or less similar concepts, Chummar (1965) extended the
analysis by Triandafilidis (1961) for footings in soil, under earthquake-
type loading that was essentially a horizontal thrust at floor l evels. The
assumption in this analysis may be stated as:
1. The long surface footing carries a vertical load, and the failure of
this footing occurs with the application of horizontal dynamic load
acting at a certain height above the base of the footing.
2. The resulting motion in the footing is of a rotatory nature.
3. The failure surface is a logarithmic spiral with its center on the
base corner of the footing, which is also the center of rotation (Fig.
6.16).
4. The rotating soil mass is considered to be a rigid body rotating
about a fixed axis.
5. The soil exhibits rigid plastic, stress-strain characteristics.
