Quiz 1
Due Midnight 06/01/14
Instructions: Type your name at the top. Answer each question. Turn this back in as an attachment in
the quiz section. Do not pay much attention to style. You will be graded based solely on the answer you
provide. You may use only your book or powerpoint from the week unless stated otherwise in a
question.
Time Limit: 45 Minutes
1) What are the deviant ABCs? Describe each of the ABCs. Give an example of each of
the ABCs that is not given in the textbook or taken from the supplemental materials
on the course website (You may use the internet if you are stuck with the last part but
please provide the link where you got your answer).
A- is attitudes. These are unpopular beliefs that can become actions. Someone may believe
that Dr. assisted euthanasia is a good thing. They may go as far as encouraging someone to
do it anyways. Good
B- is behavior. This is any overt action. An example may be homosexuals demonstrating a
public display of affection.(I don't remember if that one was in the book or not) Another, may
be participating in the "gothic" lifestyle. Good
C- is conditions. This is physical characteristics or traits. An example of this could be anyone
that doesn't have a "normal" appearance. More specifically, someone with a noticeable birth
defect would fit this category. Good

2) How is deviance different from crime? How are they the same? Give an example of
deviance that is not a crime.
Crime is a form of deviance, but deviance is not crime. Deviance doesn't have to be an illegal
act. It just has to be something that an audience frowns upon. An example of non criminal
deviance could be alcoholism. Which is not a crime in itself. 6/6

3) Pick any two positivist theories from the readings and explain how the two are
different from each other. For each theory give an example of deviance that it would
explain.
The routine activities theory and the Anomie Theory. RAT assumes that people are rational,
and that they commit acts of deviance because the they have weighed the consequences, and
still feel that the act of deviance out weighs those consequences. Anomie theory suggests
that deviance will occur when norms no longer keep a society in check. An example of RAT is
burglarizing unoccupied homes. The burglar has weighed that they are less likely to be
caught in an unoccupied home than they are to burglarize an occupied one. Also, the
possible pay off outweighs the idea of being caught. For AT, a good example is a college
campus where students often take the opportunity to experiment and express themselves.
Where most of society would look down on things like binge drinking, and sex with complete
strangers, it is often encouraged by your colleges in college because of the encouraged lack
of norms. These activities would most likely be looked down upon throughout the rest of
society. I like your anomie example.
