This is a college level course in U. S. History. Although it is a survey


course, it is designed so that students will gain an in-depth knowledge
of the subject. Careful examinations will be conducted into events in
American History, including why these events occurred and the
impacts of them.

Topics include life and thought in colonial America, revolutionary


ideology, constitutional development, Jeffersonian and Jacksonian
democracy, nineteenth-century reform movements, and Manifest
Destiny. Other topics include the Civil War and Reconstruction,
immigration, industrialism, Populism, Progressivism, World War I, the
Jazz Age, the Great Depression, the New Deal, World War II, the Cold
War, the post-Cold War era, and the United States at the beginning of
the twenty-first century.

The goal of this course is for students to be prepared for the AP Exam
in May of 2010. Simultaneously, it fulfills the United States History
requirement for graduation. From this course students will gain a
practical knowledge of U. S. History, practice in critical thinking, and
experience in effective writing.

The course will include discussions of and writing about related


historiography: how interpretations of events have changed over time,
how the issues of one time period have had an impact on the
experiences and decisions of subsequent generations, and how such
reevaluations of the past continue to shape the way historians see the
world today. These discussions and writings are woven throughout the
course.

Themes

The course will also focus on a number of key themes throughout the
year. These themes will include:

Culture: diverse individual and collective expressions through


literature, art, philosophy, music, theater, and film throughout U.S.

history. Popular culture and the dimensions of cultural conflict within
American society will be included.

Demographic Changes: political, social, economic, implications---


changes in birth, marriage, and death rates; life expectancy and family
patterns, population size and density. This will include economic,
social, and political effects of immigration, internal migration, and
migration networks.

Diversity: diversity of U.S. people and relationships among different


groups. This includes the role of race, class, ethnicity, and gender in
the history of the U.S.

Economic Transformation: changes in trade, commerce, and


technology across time. The effects of capitalist development, labor
and unions, and consumerism will be examined.

Environmental Issues: ideas about the consumption and


conservation of natural resources. This theme will focus on the impact
of population growth, industrialization, pollution, and urban and
suburban expansion.

Globalization: engagement with the world from the 15th century to


present: colonialism, mercantilism, global hegemony, development of
markets, imperialism, cultural exchange.

Politics & Citizenship: colonial and revolutionary legacies, U.S.


political traditions, growth of democracy, and development of the
modern state, defining citizenship, struggles for civil rights.

Religion in the U.S: the variety of religious beliefs and practices in


America from prehistory to the 21st century; influence of religion on
politics, economics, and society.

Slavery, Its Impact & Legacy: systems of slave labor and other
forms of non free labor (e.g. indentured servants, contract labor) in
Native American societies, the Atlantic World, and the American South
and West. Included are the economics of slavery and its racial
dimensions as well as patterns of resistance and the long term
economic, political, and social effects of slavery.

War & Diplomacy: armed conflict from the pre-colonial period to the
21st century; impact of war on American foreign policy and on politics,
the economy, and society.

Readings should be completed prior to the beginning of each chapter.


This includes the chapters in The American Pageant, and those from
The American Spirit. Students should come to class prepared to
discuss these readings.
Grading

Grading will be as follows: tests—56%, essays—29%, An exam will be


administered at the end of each grading period, and will account for
15% of the grade. A state mandated End Of Course Test will account
for 15% of each student’s final grade. Essays Document-Based
Question essays (DBQs) will be typed (double-spaced) or written in ink.
Essays will vary in length depending on the topic and are graded on
content, use of documentary and outside supporting evidence,
grammar, spelling, and evidence of critical thinking. Due to time
constraints, most essays will be completed out of class.

Pacing Guide
