CORPORATE 0 BUSINESS CHALLENGES OF
COMPULEARN
ne of the ma/or corporate and +usiness challenges which
$ompulearn is facing today# is decisions a+out the design of
training. (ome constraints will have +een imposed upon
negotiated or agreed +y the trainer when the terms of reference
were drawn up. As the training pro/ect continues and at the
stage of selecting and designing training# further negotiation and
discussion is li0ely to ta0e place. ne of the greatest constraints
that have to +e contended with is time. Trainers are usually
e@pected to react quic0ly to meet the needs of the client and#
after the initial investigation# time has to +e considered in a
num+er of ways. There is the consideration of times in terms of
how soon the program has to +e launched and how much time
there is to design training and to prepare the materials for it.
There is the +alance of the length of time that people can +e
spared for training and the length of time that is needed to
achieve the o+/ectives. Fery often there is a +ac0log of
personnel when need to +e trained +efore the program ta0es on
its e@pected pattern of frequency which means that deadlines
will need to +e set for clearing the +ac0log.
Time constraints are usually lin0ed closely when accommodation#
facilities and their availa+ility. rgani1ations very in their
allocation of dedicated space for training. (ome organi1ations
have staff colleges and training centers while others find it more
cost effective to use conference centers and hotels as the venues
for their training. In some cases no7/o+ training center while
other find it more cost effective to use conference centers and
hotels as the venues for their training. In some cases on7/o+
training has +een found the most appropriate strategy for
training and therefore accommodation +ecomes less of a
pro+lem. There are circumstances when a shared dedicated
space is provided for meetings# conferences# presentations and
training for which there is a :+oo0ing: system which may not
allow anyone to +oo0 further than a certain num+er of wee0s in
advance or where there is a :pec0ing order: in which training
does not come very high. The availa+ility or non7availa+ility of
accommodation has an influence has an influence on tactics
which the trainer may wish to use. =or e@ample# computer7+ased
training may need permanently dedicated space and the use of
syndicate e@ercise is li0ely to call for num+er of syndicate rooms.
Include with the consideration given to accommodation are the
furnishing and equipment which influence how rooms can +e set
up and what visual aids can +e cannot +e used. These factors
are particularly relevant and worth chec0ing when training is
+eing run in hotels or other locations with which the trainer may
not +e familiar.
All forms of training have to +e paid for either directly or
indirectly and +udgetary considerations are further constraints
with which the trainer has to contend. It would depend on how
individual organi1ations cost their training as to what items
should +e included in the training +udget. Eowever# everything
has to +e paid for in some way and the costing which could
affect +udgetary constraints might include or real costs of
accommodation including heating and light# travel# catering#
training material such as capital e@penditure on new equipment#
etc.
Those trainers who have +een involved closely with the delivery
at course will 0now the importance of good administration and
will +e a+le to anticipate the 0ind of administrative support that
is needed for managing teaching and learning strategies. Those
who administer training need to laise very closely with the
trainers themselves and devise effective systems. *ac0 of
adequate administrative support in terms of staffing level and
e@pertise can cause pro+lems such as /oining instructions +eing
sent a+out late# teaching material not +eing printed# pr7course
wor0 not received out late# teaching material not +eing printed#
pre7course wor0 not received +y students# etc. It is important to
confirm that the administrative system has capacity to ta0e on
additional or different responsi+ilities when new training
initiatives are introduced.
In common with other parts of the organi1ation# the training
department is not immune to :political: constraints. The
introduction of training program as well as its content and
methodology can +e the su+/ect of :political: scrutiny. =or
e@ample# the inclusion of a discussion period which might
provide the opportunity for trainees to comment on the
management style# organi1ation# administration# etc of their
respective departments could result in intervention at a senior
level to remove the discussion period.
TARGET POPULATION
The term :target population:# refers in general to all those to
whom the training will +e given. Eowever# close scrutiny needs
to +e made of the profile of the target population +efore any
training decisions can +e made or any design wor0 +egun. The
num+ers that need training and their geographical distri+ution
can impact on the strategies that might +e used especially when
num+er and distri+ution are lin0ed with financial constraints. It
could +e that ta0ing the training to the trainees is more cost
effective than +ringing the trainees to a central location.
The a+ilities and aptitudes of the target population are also
varia+le which need to +e ta0en into account to ensure that the
training is pitched at the right level and that# as far as is possi+le
no one is left +ewildered +y the training content our wondering
when they are going to +e told something that they don:t already
0now.
The +est that most trainers are li0ely to achieve is a +oard
picture of the target population which is sufficient for planning in
the initial stages +ut there are other specific features of the
target population which it is useful for trainers to 0now a+out
when the training event gets nearer. ften for trainers to 0now
a+out when the training event get nearer. ften these can +e
identified through some form of pre7training administrative
procedure. (ome trainees may have disa+ilities which have to +e
accounted for and while it is li0ely to +e impractical to
restructure the training for everyone# throughout can +e given to
ma0ing alternative arrangements when appropriate. It is not
un0nown in the training field for +id people to sit through videos
and large num+er of overhead pro/ector transparencies.
