Most l ocal resi dent s
looking to stay t are within
a stones throw of a site in
which to do so. Whether
you prefer to bike, run or
walk, there is an almost
unlimited number of scenic
places available for you to
pursue your passion.
If youre in serious train-
ing for marathons or cen-
tury bike rides, the Dolores
Cooper Bridge between
Somers Point and Longport
and the new 2.1-mile bridge
connecting Somers Point
with Ocean City offer chal-
lenging workouts. Climbing the rst hill on
the latter bridge out of Ocean City no doubt
calls to mind the I think I can, I think I can
thoughts of the Little Engine that Could.
But that is soon followed by the friendlier
axiom, What goes up, must come down.
The downhills can be an exhilarating
reward for the previous uphill climb.
The bridge has become a hugely popular
gathering spot for runners, walkers and bik-
ers, especially on weekends. And it offers an
added bonus, a shing pier for those looking
to partake in a somewhat less strenuous, and
more relaxing, sport.
For those seeking recreation in the west-
ern part of Atlantic County, the Atlantic
County Park in Estell Manor is truly a
gem. In addition to a slightly longer than
2-mile paved route around the park, there
is a 1.8-mile boardwalk that winds through
very scenic and swampy forested areas.
Unfortunately, due to storms two years ago,
only about two thirds of it is currently open.
However, one can easily exit the boards
to continue on a series of winding trails
throughout the park.
Mays Landing hosts one end of the At-
lantic County Bikeway, which extends 7
miles to the former Shore Mall. Another
popular bike path extends from behind the
Pleasantville Shopping Center to Somers
Point, ending near the bridge to Ocean City.
Heading east, one can get a mix of asphalt
and boardwalk from Longport through At-
lantic City to Gardners Basin in Atlantic
City of about 8.9 miles.
During the summer, cycling is not permit-
ted on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City after
10 a.m. While many runners and cyclists
prefer to practice their pursuits as soloists
or with friends, organized groups are also
available.
The Pineland Striders, based in the
Medford area, has many members from our
area. Sadly, the Boardwalk Runners, once a
pre-eminent running club in South Jersey,
appears to be defunct.
For runners, a couple of websites to
consult for upcoming races are www.
NJShoreRun.com, www.aksts.com. and
www.lmsports.com.
Cyclists looking to join an organized
group might want to click on www.shore-
cycleclub.org.
Boardwalks, bike paths and bridges

Charlie Pritchard
The long, steep uphill climb on the bridge exiting Ocean
City provides a challenging workout for bikers and runners.

dens in the region.
Sunday, July 13 from
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. it is the
annual Summer Garden Tour presented
by the Little Gardens Club. Guests of the
annual tour will have the chance to wander
through eight gardens in Linwood, Somers
Point, Egg Harbor Township and Hamilton
Township.
Each of the gardens will offer something
unique; a reection of that gardeners vi-
sion.
Last summer the tour offered a glimpse
at a personal oasis like the Lacovaras in
Linwood where a large koi pond created
a centerpiece for owers, butteries and
hummingbirds.
The rst stop along the tour is the Linwood
Arboretum where tickets will be sold on the
day of the tour. The arboretum, a 12-month,
4-season garden has many distinct blooms
in the summer; the highlight in July is the
salvia. There are dozens of species in a
variety of colors to enjoy as you stroll along
the walkway through the always evolving
gardens.
This year a short lecture is planned at 508
Rhode Island Ave. in Somers Point where
they will discuss downsizing a garden and
punctuating it with texture and color using
ornamental grasses and groundcover. The
garden colors are pink, blue and lime green,
according to Meg Albert of Ventnor, a mem-
ber of the Little Gardens Club.
The Little Gardens Club got their start
somewhere in the 1920s. Women from the
Main Line would spend their summers at the
shore. At their homes they had large gardens
but at their summer homes they had little
gardens, thus the name of the club.
The summer garden tour is the largest
fundraiser of the year for the Little Gardens
Club and these years beneciaries will be
chosen at the clubs September meeting after
the tour. In the past they have supported the
Linwood Arboretum, the South Jersey Land
and Water Trust, the Atlantic City Rescue
Mission Garden, the Hereford Inlet Garden
and the Child Federation Garden.
Aside from the Linwood Arboretum, tick-
ets are $15 and available at Langs Garden
Market on New Road in Linwood, Brennan
Marin, 640 Bay Ave. in Somers Point, Joes
Garden Center, 171 W. White Horse Pike
in Absecon and Bobs Garden Center, 6610
Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township.
The ticket also serves as a map for all
of the homes on the Little Gardens Club
Tour and also includes highlights of the
particular gardens.
This is a rain or shine event.

backyard garden of Dr. Lonny Matlick of Linwood dur-

Whether you want to drive,
walk, run, swing a club or sit
around a crackling campre,
southern New Jersey has a
wonderful collection of places
to enjoy all year around
Heres a lits of top out-
door things to do in Atlantic
County:
Drive
Those who spend way too
much time commuting on
the compass-like Black and
White Horse pikes may not
realize that Atlantic County
is home to many twisty and
owing back country roads.
Head west out of Port Repub-
lic on Clarks Landing Road
and treat yourself to quiet,
little-traveled rolling road
that leads you all the way to
the Historic Pleasant Mills
Church in Batsto. Along the
way, try to spot the grave
of 18th-century land pirate
Joseph Mulliner on the south
side of the road.
For a different trip, you
may want to drive to the
southern portion of Atlantic
County and motor along Mays
Landing-Somers Point Road.
Make sure to drive south
down any of the side roads
Jeffers Landing, Wharf or
Thompson roads to enjoy
many wonderful views and
historic homes.
Golf
Those who prefer to drive
on grass know that Atlan-
tic County is home to golf
courses that suit all levels of
abilities. They include the
Lots of ways to enjoy the outdoors in Atlantic County
technically challenging and
nationally ranked Stockton
Seaview Hotel and Golf Club,
Bay Course where the annual
LPGA ShopRite Classic is
played. There are many public
courses, such as Pomona Golf
Club outside of Egg Harbor
City, as well. You many want
to test your skills at Ballamor,
Twisted Dunes, Green Tree,
or McCulloughs Emerald
Links, all located in Egg Har-
bor Township. Maybe you
would want to consider join-
ing the Atlantic City Country
Club in Northeld where the
term, birdie was coined in
1903.
Enjoy wildlife
Like most of coastal New
Jersey, the Edwin B. Forsythe
National Wildlife Refuge took
its lumps when Superstorm
Sandy threw her punches
at the area. But the refuge,
located off of Route 9 in the
Oceanville section of Gal-
loway, is back and open for
business. Its 8-mile-long loop
for cars, bicycles and foot traf-
c allows visitors to observe
all of natures glory. Bring
your camera or binoculars
and see how many migrating
shore birds youll nd. Call
609-652-1665 or see www.
fws.gov/northeast/forsythe.
Walking
After a hectic week in the
ofce, the construction site
or the casino, a good walk al-
ways does the mind and body
good. Atlantic County offers
several places for a quiet walk.
Here are a few to try:
The 7.56-mile Atlantic
County Bikeway, a perfect
place for running or walk-
ing, is a paved walkway that
stretches from the Shore Mall
in Egg Harbor Township to
the Atlantic County Institute
of Technology in Hamilton
Township. There are parking
areas at the Shore Mall, the
Atlantic County Vocational
Technical School and at Eng-
lish Creek Avenue.
The Atlantic County Park
in Estell Manor on Route 50,
south of Mays Landing, offers
a 2.2-mile paved loop that is
perfect for strolling to escape
the hassles of a modern world.
While you are at it, take a
walk through time by striding

Enjoy historic settings
Though it is not techni-
cally located inside Atlantic
County, the historic Batsto
Village in neighboring Burl-
ington County is close enough
to count. The former village is
now a state-preserved historic
site with original buildings to
explore.
The mansion dates back to
the middle-1700s. The mills
at Batsto were used to make
guns and ammunition for the
Colonial soldiers in the Revo-
lutionary War. Make sure to
spend some time in the infor-
mative welcome center and
learn about the New Jerseys
bog iron industry.
On the third Sunday of
October, thousands of people
ock to Batsto to enjoy the
annual Country Living Fair,
colorful leaves and cool au-
tumn outdoor weather. But
the rest of the year, the towns
streets and buildings are open
for a trip back in time. Call
609-561-0024 or take a vir-
tual tour at www.state.nj.us/
dep/parksandforests/parks/
wharton.html.
Camping
Though millions pack
South Jersey beaches during
a typical summer weekend,
quiet campgrounds offer tran-
quility and down-home fun
just minutes away from the
big-city conveniences.
Try camping at Birch Grove
Park, a gem of a nd located
inside the city of Northeld.
Though only a few minutes
from busy Tilton Road, this
271-acre getaway feels like
it is miles back in the woods.
Birch Grove features a play-
ground, tent sites, picnic areas,
restrooms, fishing tourna-
ments, nature/exercise trails
and summer evening concerts.
The parks freshwater ponds
are stocked each March and
November. Visitors can pick
up a free freshwater shing
digest at the snack bar.
The park is open daily all
year long, with the exception
of Christmas Day. From Me-
morial Day to Aug. 31, hours
are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The park
closes at 6 p.m. in September
and 5 p.m. in October. Call
609-641-3778 or see www.
cityofnorthfield.org/main-
pages/birchgrove.asp.
Lake Lenape Park offers
camping, hiking, swimming
opportunities and backwoods
fun in a setting thats also a
few minutes from modern
conveniences.
Encompassing nearly 2,200
acres on the western side of
Lake Lenape, Lake Lenape
Park is a favorite location
for boating, barbecuing, bald
eagle watching and bridal
photos. Located at 6303 Hard-
ing Highway in the Mays
Landing section of Hamilton
Township, the park offers a
boat launch, playground, and
18 camp sites for tent camp-
ers only.
User fees for Lake Lenape
campsites are $17 a night for
up to six people; reservations
will be taken at the Lake Le-
nape Reservation Ofce.
Near the parks playground
is a gazebo overlooking the
lake. The gazebo may be re-
served for parties or weddings.
For information, reserva-
tions or boat permit details,
call 609-625-8219.
Enjoy canoeing
Spend a few hours relaxing
on one of the many waterways
that flow thorough Atlan-
tic County. You can canoe
down thee Great Egg Harbor
River through Historic Mays
Landing. Maybe you prefer
the backwaters route from
Weymouth Furnace to Lake
Lenape. Perhaps you wish
see the wide open expanse of
the Great Egg Harbor River in
the marshlands between Cape
May and Atlantic counties?
The Paddle Shack, located at
5012 Ocean Heights Avenue
in Egg Harbor Township can
get you on your way. See
www.paddleshack.com for
information.
Fishing
Atlantic Countys creeks,
rivers, back bays and its miles
of Atlantic Ocean beachfront
offer many opportunities for
first-time and experienced
shermen. The Ventnor Fish-
ing Pier offers reasonable rates
for sightseers or fishermen.
Call 609-823-7944 for rates.
If you want to tackle the
high seas, but dont want
to swallow a huge monthly
payment, consider taking a
shing charter boat such as the
Fish Finder II in Brigantine at
609-264-0918 of the Jesse-O
Fishing Charters in Margate at
609-412-3635. They have ev-
erything you and your family
