1. Overview

This tutorial will show you how to get the Surface model from a raw scan data set.
Auto Surfacing is the fastest and easiest way to get watertight surface model from a very
complicated mesh like a character model.

If you want to apply auto surfacing on a mesh, the mesh might need to be optimized for in
order to get a good result.

Rapidform XOR possesses automated methods for creating optimized polygon
mesh models.
Manual operations used to remove messy holes or orange-peel like noise are no longer
required.
The mesh models generated in XOR meet the specific quality requirements to be used for
FEM.

If you need surface data for the purpose of computer graphics or for post processing for
FEM, applying the auto-surfacing command will tightly fit a surface to the mesh model.

In addition to rapidly generating a surface model, the entire process of modeling is
parametric and editable in any step.

4. Modeling Process

Step1: Mesh Editing
1. Choose Insert >Import to import teeth.stl at following location: ~/INUS
Technology/rapidformXO Redesign/Sample/ SurfaceModeling/ AutoSurface.

2. To enter the Mesh Mode for editing, double click the imported mesh.

3. Apply Tools>Mesh Tools>Fill Holes to fill holes in the mesh.
Select the target boundaries by mouse dragging them.

The holes with the selected boundaries will be filled according to the options chosen.

Creating a watertight mesh model from scan data does not require the hole filling
operations.
The Global Remesh command can be used to heal errors in the mesh.

4. Apply Tools>Mesh Tools>Global Remesh to make a water-tight mesh

< Before> < After>

5. Apply Tools>Mesh Tools>Decimate to reduce the number of triangles with preserving
the original shape of the model. In this step, please use 50% as the Reduction Ratio.

6. To heal various defects in the mesh, apply Tools>Mesh Tools>Healing Wizard.

The existing erroneous poly-face will be automatically displayed by a variety of colors.
Simply execute this command to remove whole defects with the default options.

7. Apply Tools>Mesh Tools>Enhance to improve the surface quality on the mesh.
The operation is very useful for removing the orange-peel like noise and reconstructing
sharp edges.

< Before> <After>

8. Apply Tools>Mesh Tools>Optimize Mesh to get a highly enhanced mesh from the
Scan data. The resulting mesh is good enough for FEM analyses.

< Before > < After>

9. Lets check the deviation between the original mesh and the optimized mesh by
Accuracy Analyzer.

10. Exit from Mesh mode by clicking the Apply button in the bottom right corner.

Step2: Create Surfaces ( Auto Surface)

Lets create polygon-fit surfaces on the optimized mesh using the Auto Surfacing.

1. Apply Insert>Surface>Auto Surfacing. And then input 500 as the No. Of Surfaces.

If you have a closed volumetric mesh, a sewed surface body (Solid) will be obtained.

Step3: Accuracy Analysis

1. Apply Tools>Body Tools>Find Defect to find erroneous faces on this surface body.

Selecting the Results items will highlight defective faces.

2. View the deviation between the auto-surfaced model and the original mesh by using
the Accuracy Analyzer.

Step4: Mesh Edit

1. Lets modify the previous mesh.
When you double-click the mesh in the project tree, you can enter the editing mode of
the previous mesh.
Apply Tools>Mesh Tools>Defeature to change the shape of the tooth model.
Select one tooth by using the paintbrush tool as seen in the picture below.

As a result, we can get the de-featured tooth model.

Step5: Update Result

1. Apply Tools>Mesh Tools>Split to cut the mesh and cap the section ends.
Lets draw a polyline on the bottom area.

When you click Next Stage, the remaining region is selectable.

2. The obtained result is as follows.

3. When you exit from the Mesh mode, you will get an updated surface model without
applying any additional operations.
