PROTECTION PROGRAM
What is Chromium (VI)?
Also known as Hex-Chrome, Cr(VI), Hexavalent
Chromium
Naturally occurring metal element
Several Forms
Found in Chemical and Industrial Processes
Chromium Metal found in chrome plated parts, stainless
steel, and other metal alloys is not Chrome (VI)
However it can be generated when welding on stainless steel and
other metals alloyed with chromium


How can Chromium (VI) affect the body?
Inhalation
Dust, mist, or fume
Cause lung cancer and irritation
Damage to nose and throat
Allergic reaction that can result in occupational asthma
Allergic reaction to skin
Chromium (VI) compound group are irritants and
corrosive
Cause irritation and damage to the skin or eyes due to a chemical
burn (generally when hex chrome is in liquid form)
How is Chromium (VI) exposure regulated?

Exposure Determination and Monitoring
Weld Bay is a regulated area
Anyone assigned to work in the Weld Bay must go
through the JR Chromium (VI) Protection Program
medical surveillance
hazard communications
housekeeping
hygiene practices
Use of engineering and work practice controls
Mandatory use of extractors when working on chromium
based metal or compound
Protective Clothing
JR recommends you ensure no cross contamination from
work clothing to personal clothing
Any work done on chromium based metal or
compounds, employees shall not take home the
clothes that are worn during that time of work
Uniforms are provided at a nominal cost
Outside laundry service is used to pick up, wash, and
return employee uniforms
Safety glasses are a requirement to wear and are
provided at no cost to employees by JR
Housekeeping and Hygiene
Recommend washing hands and face at end of work shift and or
prior to eating drinking, smoking, chewing tobacco or gum, applying
cosmetics, or using the toilet
You may not eat, drink, smoke, chew tobacco or gum, or apply
cosmetics in the regulated area
Surfaces to be cleaned of the contaminate Chromium (VI) to
minimize likelihood of exposure
Do not clean surfaces with compressed air unless done in
conjunction with a ventilation system designated to capture dust
cloud(s)
Air filters are changed regularly (weekly/biweekly)
Medical Surveillance
Medical Exam done at no cost
Baseline Exam (before working in Weld Bay)
Yearly Exam
Post Exam (moved positions, left company)
All medical findings are confidential
You are entitled to a copy of the examination findings
