Interactive Storybook

Your next topic is Interactive Storybook Development. You are required to engage
with the Design Cycle in order to complete this assignment. Your Interactive
Storybook should be completed to a near professional standard as you have 2
months to complete it.

Your interactive storybook must come from an existing children’s book. You must
get the approval of Mr. Read before you begin. You must use images from the book,
you can scan or take digital photos of your book. You will need to use the following
software (or similar) to create your storybooks:

GIMP (or Photoshop if you are so inclined) to manipulate the images of your
storybook
GIF Animator to create animated images
Microsoft PowerPoint (or Flash if you are so inclined) to create the
interactivity

In order to complete this assignment, you will engage in all 4 stages of the Design
Cycle.
INVESTIGATE
1. You need to find at least 3 Interactive Storybooks that you think are well
done and write a Content Analysis.
2. After you have found 3 ‘well done’ Interactive Storybooks, you need to
analyze them. You should analyze their content, functionality, layout and
design. Your Content Analysis should be 500-words.
3. By analyzing these Interactive Storybooks, you should get an idea of how
and why these Interactive Storybooks are appealing. After you have
investigated 3 Interactive Storybooks, you can then move on to the next
stage of the Design Cycle! For information on how to write a Content
Analysis see the Content Analysis Read-tips handout.

PLAN
1. In planning your interactive storybook, you need to explain what your
interactive storybook will be about. You need to plan the following:
a. The title of the book you chose to be your interactive storybook
b. How many pages (from the book) you will do. You must start with the
cover or title page and then move onto the first page.
c. How many slides you will need for your interactive storybook (10, I
would think, would be the minimum).
d. What images you will animate.
e. What images you will make interactive (e.g. buttons).
f. What sound you will use (e.g. music, voice, sound effects, etc.)
2. When you are planning the following, you should have a written explanation
along with a storyboard example. The storyboard can be a hand-drawn
example or an example using PowerPoint.
3. Your planning work needs to be submitted via Gmail as an attachment.

CREATE
1. Now that you have finished the Investigate and Planning stages, you are
ready to begin Creating your interactive storybook. The interactive
storybook will be considered a ‘prototype’ as you will not finish the book and
will be able to finish it as your Final Project if you are interested.
2. The first stage is to scan or take digital photos of your books. We have only
one scanner and few cameras, so if you have access to this equipment
outside of class you are recommended to use it.
3. After scanning your images you should then crop and adjust them in GIMP.
4. You should then create any animations using GIF Animator.
5. Lastly you are to layout your images and sound onto PowerPoint and create
the interactive hyperlinks.
EVALUATION
1. The last stage of your project is to get feedback on your interactive
storybooks and evaluate your interactive storybooks. You should evaluate
the strengths and weaknesses of your interactive storybooks.
