3. Kissing
4. Fondling and hugging one`s spouse
5. Playing with one`s spouse

All of these things aie consideied disliked while fasting with the condition that one is suie that pie oi full

a thing will occui it becomes haiam to paiticipate in any such act

6. Tasting food without swallowing it

7. Excessive talking without need oi benefit

Excusable occuiiences Excusable occuiiences Excusable occuiiences Excusable occuiiences

If any of the following happen while one is fasting, one`s fast is still valid and one is not obliged to make up
the fast:
- Vomiting: unless one induces vomit. If one induces vomiting he will be obliged to make up the day.

1
If pie-e|aculatoiy fluid is ieleased oi if full e|aculation occuis, one is iequiied to make up the paiticulai day of fasting as
long as it occuis fiom one of these acts mentioned above. But if eithei is ieleased due to a non-customaiy cause such as
cold weathei, etc. one isn`t obliged to make up the fast.
2
It is undesiiable foi one to taste food, like a pot ioast, salt, oi honey, oi to chew a small moisel of something, oi to chew
a baby`s food to make it palatable foi him/hei. But weie one to do so, it would not bieak the fast unless one happens to
swallow it.

The Expiation foi Bieaking one`s Fast duiing Ramadan (Q'~-, ,'=-! -,'--)
4

All of those who intentionally bieak theii fasts without a valid excuse
5
aie iequiied to compensate foi this
violation - in addition to making up the day - by doing what is called an expiation` oi dispensation`
(kaffaiah). Expiation is of thiee diffeient foims:

1. The fieeing of a slave
2. Fasting foi 2 consecutive months
3. Feeding 60 indigent people

One of the thiee afoiementioned expiations is due foi each day that one violates the sanctity of the month of
Ramadan by intentionally bieaking the fast by eating
6
, diinking, oi having sexual inteicouise.

3
That is, it is excusable as long as one doesn`t swallow it intentionally. If one swallows it intentionally, one must make up
the fast and do an expiation of fasting 2 months consecutively, feeding 60 indigent Muslims, oi fieeing a slave.
4
The same iulings apply foi one who bieaks any obligatoiy fast outside of Ramadan, like a fast that one vows to keep
eveiy week, eveiy month, oi eveiy Thuisday, foi example.
5
Examples of people who have valid excuses not to fast aie tiaveleis, menstiuating women, women still bleeding aftei
giving biith, piegnant women, women who aie nuising childien, eldeily men and women who can no longei beai the
pains of fasting and anyone similai to them. Tiaveleis, menstiuating women, and those still bleeding aftei child biith, aie
all iequiied to make up the days missed fiom fasting, but they aie not iequiied to feed foi days missed. As foi piegnant
women, they aie iequiied to make up the days they missed, but not iequiied to feed anyone. As foi the woman who is
nuising hei child, she is iequiied to make up the days missed as well as feed an indigent foi each missed day. And the
eldeily and those who aie unfit to fast aie neithei iequiied to make up the days missed fiom fasting noi feed anyone foi

The Expiation foi Bieaking one`s voluntaiy fast (_;=--','=-!)

If a peison intentionally bieaks a voluntaiy fast without a valid ieason, it is his obligation to make up the fast
at a latei day. But no expiation othei than that is iequiied.

The peison who cannot beai the pains of fasting

Those who cannot fast due to old age, chionic illness, the one who can not beai the pains of fasting and
theieaftei bieaks it, oi the one who is weakened by fasting and feais foi his physical well-being oi life, each
one of these people is peimitted to bieak the fast whethei the fast is obligatoiy oi voluntaiy.

These excuses aie consideied legitimate ieasons foi not fasting oi foi bieaking one`s fast. The diffeience is
that those who cannot beai the pains of fasting, and those who aie weakened by fasting aie iequiied to make
up days missed at a latei time, while those who aie deciepit oi suffei fiom chionic illness aie not iequiied to
make up the days missed. They aie also not iequiied to feed anyone foi days missed.

6
Inhaling oi swallowing smoke, dust, and any othei ob|ect also bieaks one`s fast if it is done intentionally. Even though
smoke and dust aie not food, they aie given the same iuling of food since they aie things that entei the body fiom the
same points of entiy as food and diink. So food and diink aie not the only things that can bieak one`s fast. Any non-food
item that is equally digestible when enteied into the body also can bieak one`s fast.
