studentsmakeastheyprepareforthecelebrationoftheSacramentofConfirmation.

Thisprogramisformattedinsuchamannerthatthefourlessonsmaybetaughtoveraperiodoftime,
preferablyfouronehoursessions.OverthecourseoftheprogramtheCardinalmovesthestudents
fromanunderstandingoftheChurchandtheSacramentsofInitiationwhichbringthemtobecomefull
membersoftheChurch,toencouragingthestudentstobecomeactivewitnessestotheloveofGodin
theirlivesthatistheirChristianrightandduty.

Inofferingthisvideolessonseries,theCardinalexerciseshisministrytoteach,conferreduponhiminhis
consecrationasBishop.TheCatechismoftheCatholicChurchstates:Byvirtue,therefore,oftheHoly

DignityofConfirmation:
1. ThosewhohavebeenbaptizedcontinueonthepathofChristianinitiationthroughthe
sacramentofconfirmation.InthissacramenttheyreceivetheHolySpiritwhomtheLordsent
upontheapostlesatPentecost.
2. ThisgivingoftheHolySpiritconformsbelieversmorefullytoChristandstrengthensthemso
thattheymaybearwitnesstoChristforthebuildingupofhisBodyinfaithandlove.Theyare
somarkedwiththecharacterorsealoftheLordthatthesacramentofconfirmationcannotbe
repeated(FromtheRiteofConfirmation,CatholicRitesToday).
SacramentsofInitiation:
Baptism,theEucharist,andconfirmationtogetherconstitutethesacramentsofChristianinitiation,
whoseunitymustbesafeguarded.Itmustbeexplainedtothefaithfulthatthereceptionof
confirmationisnecessaryforthecompletionofbaptismalgrace.

Confirmation,then,shouldbeunderstoodinthecontextofChristianinitiation,andnotasamethodof
markingthecomingofageofacandidate,sincethesacramentofconfirmationisinfactadministered
topeoplefrominfancythroughadulthood(LiturgicalNormsandPolicies,4.1.44.1.5).
IndelibleCharacterofConfirmation:
Confirmationconfersonthebaptizedanindeliblecharacter,thesealoftheLord,andenrichesthem
withthegiftsoftheHolySpiritwhichconformsthemmorecloselytoChrist,bindsthemmoreperfectly
totheChurch,andgivesthemgraceandstrength,astruewitnessesofChrist,tospreadtheLords
presenceamongothersandtodefendthefaithbywordanddeed(LiturgicalNormsandPolicies,4.1.3).

RoleoftheBishop:
Normallyabishopadministersthesacramentsothattherewillbeaclearerreferencetothefirst
pouringforthoftheHolySpiritatPentecost:aftertheapostleswerefilledwiththeHolySpirit,they
themselvesgavetheSpirittothefaithfulthroughthelayingonofhands.ThusthereceptionoftheSpirit
throughtheministryofthebishopshowstheclosebondthatjoinstheconfirmedtotheChurchandthe
mandatereceivedfromChristtobearwitnesstohim(RiteforConfirmation,7).

AdultintheChurch
AlthoughConfirmationissometimescalledthesacramentofChristianmaturity,wemustnotconfuse
adultfaithwiththeadultageofnaturalgrowth,norforgetthatthebaptismalgraceisagraceoffree,
unmeritedelectionanddoesnotneedratificationtobecomeeffective.St.Thomasremindsusofthis:
Ageofbodydoesnotdeterminetheageofsoul.Eveninchildhoodmancanattainspiritual
maturity:asthebookofWisdomsays:Foroldageisnothonoredforlengthoftime,ormeasured
bynumberofyears.Manychildren,throughthestrengthoftheHolySpirittheyhavereceived,
havebravelyfoughtforChristeventothesheddingoftheirblood(CCC,1308).

Preparation:
PreparationforconfirmationshouldaimatleadingtheChristiantowardamoreintimateunionwith
ChristandamorelivelyfamiliaritywiththeHolySpirithisactions,hisgiftsandhisbiddingsinorder

tobemorecapableofassumingtheapostolicresponsibilitiesofChristianlife.Tothisendcatechesisfor
confirmationshouldstrivetoawakenasenseofbelongingtotheChurchofJesusChrist,theuniversal
Churchaswellastheparishcommunity.(LiturgicalNormsandPolicies,4.10.4)

alittlelikeexaminationofconscience,theprayerweusebeforecelebratingthesacramentof
reconciliation,butithasadifferentpurpose.TheExamenisadailyreflectiveprayerwhichhelpsusto
findGodinourdailylife.TherearefivestepstotheExamen;belowareeachofthestepswitha
directionandaspaceforyourresponse.Tohelpinyourfocusonthisprayer,itisimportantthatyou
writearesponsetoeachpointoftheexercise.
