5 ways to deal with a boss who is a workaholic

ET suggests five ways to deal with a workaholic boss.
Distorted work-life balance and emotional strain are some of the side effects of
reporting to a workaholic boss. But research shows that working with a workaholic
is not such a bad thing. By focusing on ones work quality, setting firm and realistic
expectations from the start and getting to know the person better, one can coast
along at the workplace in spite of a clashing working style, says ET.
Set Your Own Priorities
Sanchit Verma, a marketing pro thinks it is important to set ones own priorities
clearly about how much time is one willing to give away when dealing with workaholic bosses. Verma reported to a boss
who worked overtime and always insisted on catching up for work discussions after office hours. He used to call me to
his cabin when I was close to winding up. I gave in initially, but made it clear a few times later that I had other
engagements after office and wont be able to engage in discussions after office, he says.
Focus on Quality
Cross-check all your work-related tasks done during the day and be thorough in your work to avoid post-assignment
discussions, says Verma. He says if one delivers on quality, ones boss will get used to the working style. JM Prasad,
chief, HR at ING Vysya Bank, says better planning of what is important, avoiding the no-deadline syndrome and no piling of
work towards closing hours can help improve quality.
Break the Ice
In an article published in Career Development International, Rouen Business School professor, Yehuda Baruch says that
workaholism isnt such a bad thing. He says workaholics are energised by their work. Verma agrees. It might be
worthwhile to engage them (workaholics) in discussions on ones own passions and family time to help break the ice, he
says.
Give Them Actionable Plans
Verma has tried giving actionable plans to former bosses and has succeeded. One could put down everything on mails
and could ask them for prioritising ones tasks and projects, or one could leave them with some actionable plans to avoid
being chased after work, he says.
Communicate Clearly
If your workaholic boss continues to make unreasonable demands on your time, it becomes important to acknowledge
that this could be a potential conflict area. Express your displeasure in an open discussion and subtly hint that if you are
pushed to the wall you will be forced to make choices, says Prasad.
