Automated Remote Data Logger

The aim of this Project is to provide an up-gradation for a weather station data
logger, as a remotely accessible station through internet, accessed through Dial
up access. The data logger senses the analog signals of temperature, humidity,
rainfall, evaporation, Wind Direction and Wind Speed and processes the data
using 89C51 and stores the data in the external memory. The stored data are
accessed by a remote user through a web browser connected through dial up
networking.

Automated Vehicle Detection System

The Automatic Vehicle Detection System (AutoVDS) is a system that detects

available spaces in a parking lot and relays the information to the Internet
where it is available to interested drivers. AutoVDS will save drivers time and
aggravation by informing them of parking availability before they get to the lot,
allowing them to pick the best lot if they have a choice. AutoVDS consists of
four main components: Digital camera Central processor w/ camera control and
detection software Information database The camera and control unit are
mounted above the lot - on a building or parking garage for example. The
control unit enables the camera to take still pictures of the lot at regular
intervals. The images are then run through our detection software, which uses
edge detection to determine whether or not each space contains a car. The
results are sent via a wireless connection to a web-server (A PC with a
permanent connection to the Internet located inside a nearby building), and are
stored in a database. The database is linked to a dynamic web page so that
drivers can access the information before departing, or while en-route to the
lots. In addition those drivers who do not have Internet access may call an
automated phone service to be informed of the number of available parking
spaces. There are numerous applications for AutoVDS. It will be a great tool
not only for drivers commuting to work, school, or the mall, but also for
parking lot attendants who are in charge of large lots such as those at sporting
events. And in addition to alerting users of available parking spaces, the
AutoVDS can be used to inform parking attendants or towing companies of
cars that are parked in illegal areas.

The Interactive Classroom

The Interactive Classroom is a new innovation that uses modern technology in

the assistance of educating and demonstrating to a large audience. Basically, if
there is a group of individuals in a particularly large audience, there will
undoubtedly be several people who cannot see what it is that the professor
draws or writes on the black board because of many reasons. We are solving
issues within a classroom setting such as obstructed views, someone arriving
late, a large flat classroom, someone that misplaced their glasses etc. The
Interactive Classroom takes away the idea of a chalkboard. There will be a
graphical user interface in place of the chalkboard. Instead of the black board,
there will be a large screen that will have several functionalities. You would
also be able to draw on the new digital board by using a drawing pen. This pen
will replace what we now know as chalk. A centralized server will store all
material on the chalkboard as an image. Software will enable the teacher to
choose different thickness and colors in their demonstrations. There will be a
mini screen on the desk of each student. This screen will be behind a thin piece
of clear plastic. If he/she cannot see something on the board then they could
just glance down and see what is on the board. All in all the Interactive
Classroom serves a mean to eliminate the chalk board; the LCD at the top of
the classroom sealing; also time to set up the laptop with all of those wires.
This new innovative technology will be the cost of a LCD, a chalkboard and a
laptop, for this is what it will be replacing. This new technology has never been
put to use like this before. Any video that needs to be shown will now be
available at the desktop of every student.

Personal Area Networks for Keyless Entry

Personal Area Networks (PANs) are a new technology for communication of

information by the transmission of signals using very small currents
capacitively coupled to the body and carried along the surface of the skin. In
this project we demonstrate the use of a PAN to provide keyless control of a
lock. The transmitter is worn on the body and sends a short coded sequence to a
lock system on a door by touching the lock. The return circuit is capacitively
coupled to the user. The PAN receiver on the lock system decodes the data
passed from the hand onto the door and unlocks the door for a variable time
window. The system uses FSK as a signaling scheme. The advantages include a
very high degree of security since the signals used are very low power and thus
would be difficult to snoop. The purpose of the project is to prove that PAN
works in a useful security application.

Bluetooth Home Automation

Our project illustrates how bluetooth technology may be used as a wireless

solution in the field of home automation. For proof of concept, we constructed
a bluetooth enabled thermostat that is controlled remotely via a web server on a
remote platform. The server can be accessed through any internet connection
and controls the operation of the thermostat. The thermostat was constructed
using a microcontroller, a temperature sensing chip, and simple combinatorial
logic. The web server interface was programmed using the Cold Fusion
language. The server creates and maintains a database of future settings. Java
was used to interact with both the database and the thermostat to transmit and
receive temperature settings. The communication between the server and the
thermostat was accomplished using BlueRS + bluetooth devices. The bluetooth
devices act as a serial connection between the server and the thermostat and
link automatically upon power up.

Home Automation using Handspring PDA

The goal of our project was to allow Handspring PDA users to control any
home appliances by simple PDA GUI commands. The user inoputs the
commands using an input pen to the application. The application handles the
event by sending out the corresponding data for the command using the
Widcomm module. The data is received by Bluetooh module and transmitted
through the Basic Stamp II microcontroller as IR codes. Abstractedly, the input
to output process involved understanding GUI user commands, sending these
commands through an RF protocol, receiving RF data, sending out the
corresponding ASCII data through the PC serial port, receiving the ASCII data
and converting the data into the appropriate IR codes. There are four important
subdivisions to the project - PDA/Widcomm Bluetooth module, Ericsson
Bluetooth module, Basic Stamp II/Serial port and IR transmitter. the solution s
to each part involved large amount of C/C++ and microcontroller programming
to control the various hardwares. The IR transmitter was built on a breadboard
using discrete devices. In the first section, we elaborate on the implementation.
Afterward, testing results are given.

Web camera motion control

The objective of this project is to control a web camera via the Internet. This
will be accomplished through the use of a motorized control tray. This tray will
be connected through a (wireless) serial link to a web server that will be
connected to a client applet that allows the user to control the direction the
camera is pointed in. Since the solution strategy involves a wireless serial link,
this would allow the camera and tray to be placed relatively far from the server.
Because of this flexibility in camera placement, many different unique
applications are possible for this system.

Autonomous Robot

The ultimate goal of our project is to transmit information from a computer,

through wireless communication, to control the mobility of a robot on wheels.
Infrared sensors will be a feature to detect objects within a given distance.
Several areas of electrical engineering are being addressed within this project:
the communication between objects by wireless radio frequencies, the control
of the robot's servomotors, an algorithm communicating data to a computer
communication port, and the programming and understanding of micro
controllers. The problem or idea that we are trying to solve is the control of a
robot using a computer and wireless communication. In the computer, a data
base will be kept in order for the robot to request information about direction
and distance to a desired location. The idea lies on the principle of mobile
autopilot by accomplishing autonomous behavior of the robot as well as
obstacle awareness through the use of infrared sensors.

Wireless Metal Detection System

This project uses a metal detector, a wireless (RF) communication link, a

command center (computer) and a remote control vehicle as a mobile unit to
detect metal underground. This information is then sent back to the
workstation. The system described above has been designed, to approximate
metal depth within a 4-inch deviation. For test and demonstration purposes, we
will search up to a depth of 1 foot. The system operates within a 500-foot
radius and can withstand reasonable amounts of interference. This system is
designed to help probe unsafe or inaccessible areas

Voice Over Internet Protocol

Our goal in this project is to create an affordable Voice Over IP solution for the
general public. Although this technology is currently available for large
corporations, the price and complexity ahs kept it out of the reach of the small
business and home user. We see the emerging power of broadband as a
untapped market space. Our design is a all-in-one dedicated hardware solution
that will provide a new class of service to this market. This product will allow
people greater freedom in communication.

A Wireless Payment System

Capstone project PayBycell.net is a unique mobile commerce solution tailored

to customers with access to Wireless Internet enabled device such as WAP
(Wireless Application Protocol) cellular phone or a Wireless Palm device.
PayByCell offers ability to pay for goods and services from comfort of these
devices. For purpose of this project we are designing a complete system that
will enable purchase of vending products (snacks) via cellular phone. By
accessing our WAP compatible site user enters the vending machine
identification number and makes a selection on the phone. Authentication is
done on our servers and if successful, signal is sent to the vending machine.
User account is debited only after the transaction is completed. Uniqueness of
our solution is that location based devices, such as vending machine in this
case, are accessed wirelessly from our servers. This simply means that vending
machine does not require land access to the Internet; instead wireless
connection is used to communicate with our servers and vice versa. Complete
transaction is done wirelessly on both sides, user to server and server to
vending machine. Demonstration of the complete system will show how simple
interface design to the vending machine can be used to extend to other types of
devices, with unlimited capabilities to provide point of wireless sale services

Wireless PC

The project we intend to execute is Wireless PC. As a proof of concept, we will

implement a digital camera to communicate with a personal computer through
wireless technology. Most cameras use USB transmission technology to
transfer data to computers. As an implementation, we intend to design a camera
interface that uses transmitters and receivers in conjunction with USB
transmission protocol to achieve wireless communication with a computer. The
selected wireless solution for Wireless PC would be Bluetooth. Bluetooth is a
wireless technology that uses a dedicated high frequency for transmission of
data and implements a frequency hop algorithm to reduce interference and
increase security. Bluetooth will therefore make computer peripherals more
portable and efficient.

Emergency Health Care System

This project was undertaken as a part of the software development for virtual
delivery of services with regard to emergency health care. The project is to
design and develop computer telephony integration-based solution to enable a
user to dial a pre -specified telephone number and talk to an agent to get
emergency medical services

ARM-BASED SMART CARD READER

Designing of a low power, low cast smart card readers using the Philips
LPC2104 micro controller (Philips arm-based micro controller). The software’s
worked with are cygwin (Unix shell on windows) and C (for coding). The
project involved study of the data sheets of the ARM7TDMI, LPC2104 micro
controller and SLE4442 memory chip. And the design of the smart card board
for accessing and writing the interfacing code for LPC2104 in C language.

Digital Coupon Implementation for Retail Chain Stores

Ever wonder why it takes so long to check out at the grocery store? Ever have a
hard time keeping track of your coupons or hate cutting them out from the
Sunday paper? Keep losing those birthday gift certificates you get from your
relatives? Always leave your gift certificates at home when you go shopping?
Having a digital coupon and gift certificate system would eliminate these
headaches associated with the current paper system. Storing coupons and gift
certificates on your PDA and/or cell phone would make these transactions
much easier and more common place. This system would speed up the
checkout times at many retail stores. It would also enable companies to target
specials and/or deals to certain people or areas. It would enable companies to
track where the coupons where being used most often and reorganize their
marketing campaigns accordingly. Initially the grocery stores will see the
benefit of this system in the shortest amount of time. This is because the
coupon is already being used in great numbers at these stores. In addition to
this fact, the new and upcoming “self-checkout” process is gaining momentum
and this automated coupon system would be a great complement to it. Also, the
PDA market is rapidly increasing and becoming more affordable to more
people. The Internet has showed us that online shopping is possible and
profitable, however, in recent months it is evident that the trip to the mall will
not be eliminated anytime soon. With this digital coupon system, the ability to
use coupon and gift certificates either online or at the retail store is where we
believe the future will be. A way to bring together online shopping and the trip
to the store with coupons and gift certificates that can be used at both places.

A Radio Controlled Video Vehicle design

The Radio Controlled Video Vehicle (RCV2 ) allows a user to comRand a

radio-controlled car using the mouse or keyboard of a computer. The control
chain consists of user input to a GUI which sends commands to a
microcontroller through a serial port. The microcontroller adjusts two digital
potentiometers which are connected to a transmitter linked to the vehicle. The
car sends video data back to the monitor of the users computer. The video data
received by the user allows them to navigate the car around obstacles. One
possible use of RCV2 is in exploring hazardous environments. Another use
may be as an entertainment system. Later versions of RCV2 could include data
transmission over the Internet, as well as image processing capabilities. Image
processing could enable the car to identify specific objects the user is searching
for.

A Wireless IR Payment System

We propose that portable information management devices be used for daily
payment transactions. The advantages of digitizing the transfer of money
include convenience, safety and the elimination of cashier errors. Our prototype
will consist of a vending machine that accepts payments from a PALM OS
device wirelessly, through the infrared data port. Before dispensing a product
the machine will validate the payment information with an Internet server, a
process similar to the validation of credit or debit card transactions. This
prototype will illustrate the technical feasibility and ease of use of wireless
digital payments and it is our hope that it will stimulate further research and
commercial interest in this area.

Self-sustaining Weather Station

The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the potential commercial

applications of a new communications protocol currently used by the amateur
radio community. Our project is to develop a fully functional, self sustaining
weather stationusing the APRS (Automic Position Reporting System) protocol.
Other wireless sensing systems already exist, including weather stations,
seismometer stations, and wireless camera systems. Our system is unique in
that each device will be able to act as a repeater, which will enable the data to
be relayed over long distances using the APRS network. This system will be
ideal for sensing applications at remote locations. This is a connectionless
communications format where small amounts of data are periodically
broadcasted to other users of the network. The data is relayed through APRS
towers to points beyond the reach of the user. The distance and direction the
data travels is determined by the user. Amateur radio operators currently have a
network of stations that broadcast weather data, position and some which even
relay internet data. In this project, the communications protocol is implemented
entirely on a PIC18C252 microcontroller. Since the packets are being
assembled byte by byte, modifications can be made to the protocol which are
advantageous to the specific application.

Fuzzified Computer-Automated Crane Control System

Currently, crane operation lacks computer-automated control, which makes it

inaccurate, unsafe, unreliable and inefficient. Classic control techniques do not
offer a adequate solution because crane operation involves multiple non-linear
systems and uncertainties. The objective of this project is to integrate fuzzy
logic into a computer automated crane control system in order to improve its
performance, efficiency, and safety as well as to reduce cost. This crane system
allows the control of a crane by implementing fuzzy logic, which is capable of
simulating a skilled crane operator's control method, by means of software.
Using sensors that ate fixed on the crane, we are able to create a closed-loop
feedback system that outputs the x-y-z position and the angle of the load at any
moment in time throughout the whole movement process. In addition, the seed
and direction of movement of the crane are also controlled by the software,
which contains the fuzzy rules. Therefore, this crane control model is able to
act independently without any human intervention. Furthermore, the collision
control feature helps prevent accidents from happening by shutting down the
system when there is an obstacle within the movement range. With these
features, FCACCS is comparable to a low -scale artificial intelligent system
that we believe will revolutionize the construction and shipping industry
especially.

MULTI ENERGY BASED X-RAY BAGGAGE INSPECTION SYSTEM

X-Ray Baggage Inspection System is a computer enabled portable equipment

to identify any offensive material such as Weapon in a sealed baggage. This
unit consists of a conveyorised belt, which is used to carry the object through
the inspection tunnel, where X-rays are incident on the object. This signal is fed
to Data Acquisition Card (DAQ), fitted to PC. An analog to digital converter,
the part of the DAQ, converts the signal to an 8-bit digital signal. The PC
captures the digital data produced by the analog to digital converter fitted to the
DAQ. This data then displayed on the monitor screen as the image. The image
thus obtained is refined, filtered using different kinds of the Image Processing
techniques. The image edges are enhanced so that the objects are clearly visible
and have a better look. Filters like Embossing filters (north embossed and south
embossed), Laplacian Filter is applied for the enhancing and detecting the
edges that makes the image of the inspected item more discernible. Also the
proposal is a scheme for Adaptive Image Contrast Enhancement based on a
generalization of Histogram Equalization (HE). HE is useful technique for
improving the image contrast, but its effect is too severe for many purposes.

Generic E-Tools

Generic E-Tools – helps to handle web applications. To create user interface

forms and to provide database connectivity for each and every form separately
is very difficult for a programmer. So by using this tool we can generate user
forms generically. This project comprises three modules: Creation mailing lists,
Creation user forms generically whenever a programmer needs, Database
connectivity and displaying these forms. These modules deal with several kinds
of information related from linking a user applicable form to the database to
retrieving information and updating the database. This tool is portable one. We
can use this tool in windows or Linux environment

ELECTRONICS PROJECTS

Design for An Automated Door Locks (Smart Keyless Entry)

Have you ever heard of an igni-second? You may not have heard of the word,
but you probably have had the misfortune of experiencing it. An igni-second is
the length of time it takes for you to realize you locked your car keys in the
ignition, just as the door slams closed. Obviously, igni-second is not a real
word - but it does represent a very real, very unpleasant occurrence. Locking
the car keys in your vehicle is a common problem that happens all the time.
Our system will integrate the existing technology in the car with a transmitter
to be added on the key chain and a transponder module to be installed in the
car. The transponder will be sending signals at all instances of time. When the
key (transmitter) gets close to the car (transponder), the transponder will
activate the transmitter, which in turn will send a shake-hand signal back to the
transponder. Thus, the transponder knows that the key (transmitter) is in range
of the car, and therefore set a true output signal. Based on that signal and two
other inputs from the door (door [open/shut], lock [locked/unlocked]), the
system will make a decision whether to open or close the car doors (locks). For
cars with manual door locks, we'll provide an electro-mechanical robotic-based
mechanism that will be placed in the driver's door and will connect to our
interface for locking/unlocking. As a consequent part of our solution, a person
will never have to lock or unlock the car upon approaching or leaving the
vehicle, again because it will happen automatically.

EMBEDDED TCP/IP LIBRARY

: This Project is an implementation of a General Purpose TCP/IP STACK for

different types of Data Loggers to be developed. The main aim of this
implementation is to provide the user with a easy interface options to see how
all of the information recorded on the microcontroller is available to the user
using standard PC tools such as a Web browser, Hyper-terminal, and Dial-up
Networking. This library contains Internet Protocols - PPP, LCP, IPCP, PAP,
SLIP, TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP protocols - Low Level Dial-up or direct
connectivity interface drivers.

Prepaid Electricity Meter

A prepaid electricity meter using microcontrollers. It stops the flow of

electricity when the prepaid amount is over.

Underground object detection by means of GPR

The necessity for localization and identification of antipersonnel landmines,

hazardous waste, and underground tank sites and other objects buried
worldwide, has arizen during the last decade. These tasks are usually done
using prodders, specially trained dogs, metal detectors and other methods that
are contact or almost contact non-destructive testing methods, which usage is in
the de-mining field accompanied with high risk level, large duration and high
cost. Our project for the Capstone Design requirement is to design and built
ground penetrating radar(GPR), using existing technology, to detect
underground objects. The detection of the object consists of determining
whether it is present, and determining its distance from underground to the
radar.
CORNER ADAPTING MOTORCYCLE HEADLIGHT

The purpose of this project is to improve the ability of a motorcycle's headlight

to correctly illuminate the roadway on turns. Since motorcycles need to bank or
lean in order to turn, the aim of the headlight beam becomes obscured and
inadequate around curves. This lighting problem can present a safety hazard to
riders at night. We plan to design a control system to sense the motorcycle's
dynamic behavior, predict its current situation and manipulate the aim of the
headlight's beam to best illuminate the roadway. We plan to solve this problem
by sensing the motorcycle's bank angle and speed and use this data to
manipulate the motorcycle's projector beam headlight. The result of the project
will be a light which moves in reaction to the leaning motorcycle and corrects
the beam aim quickly and accurately along two axes. This solution shall
represent a working prototype of the technology, which can be marketable to
motorcycle manufacturers to incorporate into new motorcycle design. Although
this problem has been present since headlights were first put on motorcycles,
we feel that it is now prudent to accept the challenge of correcting this problem
thanks to the recent advances in sensor and microprocessor design.

Fingerprint Based Ignition

The goal of our project is to eliminate the need to car you car keys and
therefore eliminating the possibility of them getting misplaced. Basically our
design allows the user of a vehicle to enter and start his/her vehicle simply at
the touch of a finger. We planned to incorporate a fingerprint sensing device
and processor into the driver side door of a vehicle. An authorized user then
simply puts his/her finger in the sensor to initiate a timing cycle. Upon
authorization the user will have a certain amount of time to enter and start the
vehicle. In our prototype we simulate this by having our system enable and
disable the remote control of a toy car. An authorized user places his/her finger
on the sensor and starts a timing cycle. Our timer will then time from a
minimum of 18 seconds to a maximum of 3 minutes and 10 seconds to enable
the remote. With an enabled remote the user can perform all the functions on
the remote, upon time expiration the remote is disabled and the functions can
no longer be performed. All the devices are powered by converters we built.
These converters run off a 12 volt car battery and step that voltage down to 5
volts. All the circuits are in the prototyping stages and would need
improvement in a final design.
