The IPG

Interns Name: AISHA WILKES

Date: JULY 12, 2014

Subject: MATH

Grade Level: 12

TEKS: PC.2F The student makes connections between

multiple representations of functions and algebraically
constructs new functions. The student analyzes and uses
functions to model real-world problems. The student is
expected to graph trigonometric functions.

Big Understanding(s)
Understanding how trigonometric functions are related to
graphs.
We use trigonometry in many aspects of our lives from
finding height of a tower or mountain to calculation ocean
tides. We use trigonometry for astronomy, naval and
aviation industries, oceanography, land surveying, and
map creation.
Trigonometric functions usage can be found in many
passions such as music. Since sound travels in waves it
is useful in developing computer music.

Objective (Student Friendly)

We will be able to identify the different properties of
trigonometric function and recreate the graphs of those
functions. The functions we will graph are sine, cosine,
tangent, and cotangent.

3 Assessment Evidence
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO CREATE TRIGONOMETRIC GRAPHS WHEN GIVEN SINE, COSINE, TANGENT,
AND COTANGENT. THEY WILL HAVE TO DETERMINE THE PERIOD AND PATTERNS OF EACH FUNCTION.
4. Opening Hook
I WILL BEGIN THE LESSON BY ASKING THE CLASS IF THEY LIKE TO PLAY DANCE GAMES SUCH AS JUST
DANCE. THEN I WILL BEGIN SHOWING HOW TO INCORPORATE DANCE MOVES WITH TRIGONOMETRIC
FUNCTIONS. I WILL HAVE THEM COPY THESE DANCE MOVES. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO SEE HOW THE
DANCE MOVES CAN HELP THEM GRAPH THE TRIG FUNCTIONS.
5. Instructional Strategies / Student Activities
Teacher Input/Modeling- I will have students write down the functions name and symbol. Also the domain and range
in their math notebook. I will then teach them the way to graph each of the four functions by hand.
Guided Practice- Each student will be given a work sheet that will have all the properties of the four functions. They
will have to finish the worksheet by doing the negative side of each graph by using the definitions of the study guide.
CFU- Students will work with their group to create the graphs of each trigonometric function.
Independent Practice- Students will complete graph worksheet with their groups or independently.
6. Materials / Resources
Blank trigonometry graph worksheets, Study guide worksheet, and graph cutouts.
7. Grouping Patterns
We will start off this lesson working as a class. Throughout the lesson students will work in their groups or
independently.
8. Ending, Summary / Reflection
We will discuss what the class learn during the lesson and also add new trigonometric functions that they will see in
the next lesson.
9. Technology- Document camera and the overhead projector to show the four different trigonometric graphs.
