ESR Meter Add On to Detect Magnetic

Field
By Jestine Yong on May 23, 2014
Hi Mr Jestine,
I would like to say thank you for all the good articles you hae sent to !e" I always
re!e!#er your state!ent a#out $making things happen%" I found an idea when
$&laying% with !y ho!e!ade '() !eter" *his '() Meter was #ased on +llan ,illco-
design" I !ade the enclosure fro! lunch #o- #ecause I couldn.t find a nice #o- to #uy
oer here" I use this !eter with crocodile cli&s attach to !y analog /0M set to
100!icro +!&ere in order to read the '() oh!"

I hae read your article $how to make full use of ESR meter% and I a! trying to
!easure &laystation stick i#ration !otor to see the result although you didn.t !ention
it on the article"
*here was no deflection on !y !eter when checking on the !otor winding" I think this
!otor acts like an inductor and if in good condition wouldn.t show low '() oh!s
reading"
Another example of Vibration Motor
I hae tested seeral good fly#ack and (M1( transfor!er windings with '() !eter and
no deflection too" ,hile trying to !oe the i#ration !otor I noticed that the '() !eter
needle !oed slightly" I asked !yself $what is this%2 I #egan to think !ore dee&ly"
Based on !y #asic knowledge a#out !otor, !agnet, and inductor when inductor
energi3ed #y electricity they create a !agnetic field surround" *here are !agnets in the
!otor" 4ly#ack, yoke and transfor!er is generating the !agnetic field, and I think this
would hel& !e to identify the! working or not when under o&erating with the hel& of
!y '() !eter"
4irst I tried to attach so!e !agnet to '() !eter &ro#es and !oed it near so!e
inductor or transfor!er that &lugged in, nothing ha&&ened" I tried to attach so!e ferrite
core to &ro#es again and unfortunately still get no result" +fter a while of thinking, this
'() !eter has 5! &6& oltage and why not to !ake !y own inductor &ro#e and use it
to search for the !agnetic field" +t first I 7ust !ade an air inductor" I don.t hae
inductance !eter to count henry alues #ut !y '() !eter showed a#out 28oh!s when
attach with this inductor" I !oe it to the !agnet and guess what2 *he needle was
deflecting"
I want to test on (M1( transfor!er #ut I a! afraid #ecause it was non insulated so I
tried to !ake it on #ol&oint tu#e and insulated it with a #igger tu#e" I closed the to& of
the tu#e with sealed acid #attery ru##er ca& and insulated the ca#le with heat shrink"
+fter that I closed this heat shrink with s&ark &lug !otorcycle ru##er"

It is the ti!e to &roe this $add on% worked and first I hae tried it on +*9 1ower
su&&ly and the needle !oed #ack and forth when I !oed this add on near the &ower
transfor!er"

(econd, I.d tried it on Monitor fly#ack and the result was the needle 7ust !oed once
and #ack to 28 oh!s alue" Had tried it on the &ower section (M1( transfor!er the
needle !oed #ack and forward" (o I concluded the working fly#ack and transfor!er
will attract the needle to !oe #ack and forward" I hae tested seeral Monitor and
*/s, and the result was the sa!e" ,hen the transfor!er or fly#ack isn.t good or not
energi3ed, there will #e no deflection on the needle" I guess this will work on another
'() Meter" 4ro! the test, a good working fly#ack, yoke and (M1( transfor!er will
hae a#out 4 '() oh!s" If close enough, so!eti!e the needle will !oe toward
negatie '() alue oh!s"
4or so!e inductors, the needle 7ust !oes slightly #ack and forward" You hae to !ake
sure the needle is !oing towards lower '() alue and #ack again" *his &roes the
transfor!er or fly#ack generate a oltage and hae a !agnetic field around it" (ince I
a! not an engineer I couldn.t e-&lain in great details" I will #e glad if others could
e-&lain and suggest an e-&lanation"

If you want to #uild this, !ake sure the inductor is well insulated and stick it to long
&lastic tu#e to aoid your hand touching another co!&onent when &ro#ing, no need to
touch this inductor, 7ust !oing it near fly#ack and transfor!er" I will take no
res&onsi#le if you got electrocuted #ecause of lack of knowledge to handle high oltage
section on Monitor or */ and da!age your '() Meter when you accidentally connect
this to high oltage"
,ith this article I ho&e I could hel& others to trou#leshoot Monitor or */ faults
es&ecially on (M1( transfor!er or fly#ack with this si!&le add on" I haen.t tested it
yet on :;< !onitor inerter transfor!er, #ut this is !ore likely will work too"
+fter all, I hae found '() Meter and )ing *ester really sae !y ti!e and easy to find
the fault without guess work" I strongly suggest you to #uy these two testers" I ho&e you
don.t get #ored with this article and I want to say this $ wouldn!t do a repair "ob
without ha#ing an ESR Meter and Ring $ester on m% hand%" By the way you can
#uy a ready !ade &lue ESR Meter and &lue Ring $ester fro! Mr Jestine"
'ote( I hae found seeral fly#acks that gie a strong !agnetic field than the others and
the needle of !y '() !eter deflect towards 3ero fast and could #e #roken" ,e can
!ake the inductance alue higher with !ore turns to &reent the &ro#le! #ecause !ost
'() !eter o&erated on 100kH3 and read inductance significant" I think the #est is in
Milihenry range" My inductor see!s to hae a#out 30 Microhenry #ecause it 7ust read
a#out 28 oh!s on !y '() !eter"
