r. INTRODUCTION
a. General
This section consists of simplified diagraos of each
of the phooograph's oain funct-ions, a wiriog diagram
of the cabinet fluorescent lamps aod scheoatic
diagrams of the Power
Juoctioo
Uoit aod the Service
Switch Assembly. Each of the sioplified diagraos is
accoopanied by a detailed description of the function.
b. Normal Customer Play
A customer desiriog to play a specific record selec-
rion musr first deposit the appropriate aoouot of
mooey as specificd in the priciog window, Oo phooo-
graphs equippe<i with a recording income totalizer, a
thank you lamp will flash as each coin is accepted,
li7heo a suffic.ienr aoount of money is deposited to
peroit the selectioo of a single recording, a
"siogles"
credit lamp lights. This lamp illuoinates instructions
informing ahe custo.oe. that he Eay make a
"siogles"
selectioo. If eoough mooey is deposited to permit the
selectioo of ao
"albuo"
recordiog, ao "albuo"
credit lamp also lights. This lamp illuoioates in-
structioos ioforoing the customer that he may make
ao "albuo" selectioo,
A selection is nade by depressing ooe letter button
aod one number button. As sooo as the secqrd button
is pressed, the ca.riaSe begins scaaniog. At the same
time the priciog rmit subtracts the appropriate nuober
of credits for the selection. If only eoough oooey
was deposited to play that selection, the credit laop
circuit is also opeoed.
Wheo the carriage a$ives at the selected reccd, it
stops, transfers the record to the spindle aod theo

iog it is returned to ahe oagazine. The carriage theo
resurles sca[oiog, Wheo the carriage reaches its
original startiog poiot f6 the second time, the car'
riage stops. This completes one cycle of operation.
2. CREDIT SYSTEM ADD CIRCUIT
Refer to Figure l. Vheo a coin is deposited in the
phooograph, thc weigbt of the coin closes the ap-
propriate coio switch. The coin switch in turo, com-
pletes dre circuit to the approPliate solenoid. If
either the qtnrt.r or half dotlar solenoid is eoergized,
the 5U1 contacts of the add-hold magoet vill be
mechaaically c.losed. Closiog the 5Ul contacts
permits capacitor C4206 to discharge through the add-
hold oagnet, holding it energized for approximately
80 oillisecoods, The add-hold magnet io tuto, me-
chanically holds the quartei or half dollar soleooid in
the energized position, This is done to allow eoough
tioe for the ctedit ratchet n,heel to rotate its required
distance.
The serviceoaa oay add credits by holding the set-
vice switch lever in the SCAN position and then
momentarily operatioS the credit svitch. Each time the
credit switch is operated, a cfucuit is coopleted to
the dime solenoid.
3. LATCH SOLENOID AND CREDIT LAMP CIRCUIT
When 10f credit is established in the phooograph, the
latch bar solenoid is energized to oechaoically
operate the latch bar in the elecrical selector. This
pero its the selection buttotrs to be held io the de-
pressed positioo, for tbe proper length of time, when
a selectioo is oade. Also, wheo l0( credit is estab-
lished, the siogle credit laop is lighted to illuoioate
the
"Select
Any Single" credit laop. Vhen 256 credit
is established, the albua credit laop is lighted to
illuminate the
"Select
Any Albuo" credit laop.
Vheo the coin solenoids are operated as described
in paragraph 2, the ctedit ratchet wheel rotates aod
closes the credit s*itch cootacts. If enough credit
for a single selectioo is accumulated the o[e'credit
switch contacts 7Ul close coapleting a circuit to
the latch solenoid and the siogle credit laop. Refer
ro Figure 2, The cooplete circuit is as follovs: Frou
the 24-volt a.c. source in the Solid State Coorol
Center thtough the 15 ampere fuse, the cabinet cable
assembly, the coin switch asseobly, the 3U21
con-
tacts, the 7Ul cootacts, pia 2 ot

aod P34O2 to
both the Latch soleooid aod the siogle credit laop.
The other side of the credit lamp is connected to
ground, The latch soleooid is coooected to grouod
through the lBl contacts of the oanual credit svitch.

functions are accooplished by energiziag the sub-
tract soleooid as described in the followiog para'

Vhen tbe timiog lelay eoergizes, it closes the 3U1

holding itself energized through the letter and
number hold switches
(1S2, 2S2, 4S2). The timing

d, Play Control anrl flounter t,ircuits
The play control asseebly ccnltols tbe number .:rf
tioes the carriage is allowed to scan b;rck and forth
on the tuechanism base. The counrer assembly
counts the numbel of selectior!-r maCe on the phono-
Sraph
and is coonected in parallel with the add
solerloid of the play conrol assembly. Refer to
Figure 5. The add soleooid of the play control
assembly recei.ves its voltage from the 24-volt a,c.
supply in the SCC8. The ground side of the add
solenoid is connected to pio 1 of the service
switch via pio 3 of
J3102
and P3000. The couater
assembly receives its voltage from the same source
via pin
9 of
J3102
and P1000. Its ground side is
conoected to pin
1 of the service sw-itch. Both p-io I
aod pin 3 a.e conoected to pin 12 which is con-
nected to ground via the 4U2 cootacts of the sub-
tract solenoid in the UDPU6.
Vhen a selectioo is made, the subtract soleooid io
the UDPU6 is eoergized closiog the 4U2 contacts.
This energizes dre add solenoid io the play conrol
assembly and the counter assembly. Each time the
add solenoid is energized, it mechanically closes a
step switch which completes a circuit to the Eech-
anism ootot causiog the carr.iage to begin scanoing.
This switch can oaly be opeoed by pulsing the sub-
tract soleqoid ia tbc SCC8.\rice.
The subtract soleooid oay be eaergized auto-
matically through a play cooaol subrract switch io
the 1605T17 or manually by usiog the oaaual credit
svitch oo the service switch asseEbly. The play
contlol subtract switch is oounted oo the front of
the carriage asseobly aod ooves vith it. Each tiEe
the carriage asseobly oeals the right side of the
mechaniso base, a roller oD the play cootrol sub-
tract switch meets with a statiooary raop mouoted
on the mechanism base. As the carriage asseobly
moves dearer dre right end of the base, the roller
rDoves up the ramp and closes the 8Ml contacts
which cooplete a circuit to the play control sub-
tract solenoid. The raop is positioned so the cat-
riage will reverse direcrion before the 8M1 contacts
are allowed to open. Since it takes two pulses of
the subtract solenoid to open the 6otor circuit, the
carriage must scan back and forth tvice.
The subtract solenoid may be energized maaually
by placing the service switch lever in the OFF
position and operaaing the manual credit buttoo
twice, Each time the credit button is operated, a
ground cfucuit to the subtract solenoid is complered.
This circuit is from the ground side of the subtract
soleooid, through pio 4 ot
J3102
and P1000 to pin 6
of rhe service switch. Vheo the service switch
lever is in the OFF position, pins 5 and 6 are
shorted together. Pio 5 is coonected to gtound via
the 182 contacts of the oanual credit buttoo aod pin
I of PJ000 and
Jll02.
5. SELECTION SYSTEM
a. General
This selection system uses toroidal shaped mag-
netic cores
(toroids)
of magnesium ferrite as the
storage eleoents. There are one huo&ed aod sixty
cores - oae for each record side - arranged io an
electrical matrix and housed io the Tormat Memory
Unit. This uoit, the elecrrical selector, the oech-
aniso cootrol circuits, a contact pluoger block on
the mechanism carriage aod the associated elec-
trooic circuits cooprise the seleclion systeE,
The toroids are ,uranSed io the oemory unit in two
rows of eighty each. They are spaced so there is
one toroid io each row at each oagazine record
space. Each toroid has four rrires threaded through
it; two are part of the selectioo ioput circuit (write-
in), ooe is part of the output circuit (readout) aod
one is part of a sensing circuit. Refer to Figure 6.

Plug,
the
readout circuits tetoinate in 80 rivets oo the bottom
of the memory unit and the seosing circuit ter'
mioates in a single prong coooector which plugs
ioto tbe tlip circuit on the Solid State Control Ceotet.
Each toroid has two normal states of oaSoetization
in which the residual oagnetic flux is in either the
clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Ooe of
rhese states is called zero or no-selectioo; the
othe. is the selected state. If uodisturbed by a
magoetic field, they will retain, idefinitely, either
state.
b. Write-in Cireuit
The tri'rent pulse and the resultaot magnetic field
that passes through a toroid must exceed a ctitical
density or streogth before the toroid changes state.
A magnetic field less thao the critical value has oo
sigoificaot effect on the totoid. This behavior
makes it possible to afange the toroids in a oolrir
that greatly simplifies dte writein circuits and
writein switching.
Figure 7 shows the oaarix, circuits and switches
associated witb the writeio opeiatior. The circles
at the points of intersection of the letter and
oumber circuits represeot the toroids. Aoy toroid
may be identified in refereoce to the selection
numbering system of the phooograph by using the
letter aod number circuits that iotersect io that
toroid. (Example: Toroid 82 is at the intersection
of circuits B and 2).
In Figue 7, selectioo [}2 is showo operated. It cao
be seeo that wheo the trigger switch is closed, a
pulse of current is fed through all the toroids in the
nuober 2 rov. Froo the nudber 2 row, the pulse
enters the letter circu.it aod, since the B switch is
closed, through al.[ the toroids in the B row, One
toroid, 82, has dreo beea pulsed by a magnetic field
tw.ice as strong as any other toroid.
The current pulse is regulated io the Solid State
Control Center so the curreot throuSh a siogle wie
does not produce a magnetic field that exceeds the
critical strength required to select a toroid. This
means that eveu though a vritein pulse is fed
through a toroid, the toroid will not be selected un-
less two circuits are coopleted through it.

d. Sensing and Trip Relay Circuit
The sensiog circuit cons.ists of a loop of wire
threaded through the toroids in the Tormat Memory
Uoit aod terminated at the trip circuit in the SCC8.
Refer to Figure 10. If a toroid is in the selected
state vhen a readout pulse is passed tbrough it, the
toroid changes state. This change is detected io
the seose loop as a
l-volt
pulse which is fed
directly to the trip circuit in the SCCS (J3106). The
3-volt pulse causes silicon coottolled switch
SCSI101 to begin conducting. This causes the trip
relay to eaergize closing a pair of cootacts that
complete a circuit to the rip soleooid io the
160sT17.
e. Trip Solenoid Circuit
The trip solenoid, if eoergized duriog a scan cycle,
causes the oechaoism to detent and play a selec-
tioo. Refer to Figure 11. This circuit is completed
through the 2M1 cootacts of the clutch switch and
lE12 cootacts of the trip relay, The clutch switch
operates immediately opeoing the 2Ml cootacts and
de-eoergiziog the trip solenoid.

The Solid State Stereo Anplifier, Type TSA7,
is
a fully ttansistotized, dual chanoel, low dis-
tortion, high fidelity amplifiet with a power out-
put of 40 watts pe! channel. A special feature
of this amplifier is the speaker overload pro-
tectioo circuit. This citcuit contioually 6onitors
the output curreot. If the output cuffeot in-
creases to a level that may daoage the aopli-
fier, the speaLer overload protection circuit cuts
off the ioput to the aoplifier.
The aoplifier also contains circuits for treble,
bass aod lecord sciatch competrsation. These
controls enable the output to be varied to fit
the custooers need.

AVC Circuit
A saopliog of tbe output of
Q5104
is coupled
through C5105 to tbe base of
Q5105.
The
output ftoo the collector of
Q5105
is recti-
fie<i by diode CR5l06 creating a d.c. voltage.
This voltage varies with the average ampli-
tude of tbe sigaal voltage applied to
Q5105.
This varyiog d.c, voltage is directly coupled
to the ceoter of dual diode CRif05. If a
large sigoal voltage is coupled to
Q5105,
ttren a large d.c. signal is coupled to diodes
CR5l04 and CR5105. Ttis large signal
forwatd biases the diodes effectively de-
creasing their resistance. As the resistance
decreases, oore of the signal voltage at the
base of
Q5103
is shunted to grouod effec-
tively decreasiog the input signal to
Q510i.
Treble, Base, Volume and Gain Set Controls
The TREBLE aod BASS controls are in paral-
lel with the output froo
Q5104.
The TREBLE
control varies the amount of high frequencies

The BASS coorol varies
the aoount of low frequencies fed to
Q5106.
The VOLUME control varies the aoouot of

to drive the output uansformer, T5102.
Shori Circuit Protectior Circuit
This citcuit prevents aoplifiet damage due
to sbort circuits, ovetloads ot iocoEcct con'

tioo occurs in the speaker systeE that tlay
result ia daoage to the aoplifier, the short
circuit protection citcuit biases the inPut

Refer to Schemtic Diagrao. The output
curent is oooitored by oeasuriog the voltage
across eoitter resistor R5128. As the curent
through R5128 increases, capacitot C5122
charges in tie polatity shown. Fot aoy

of R5f36 and R5137. If the cutrent through

GENERAL
The Solid State Cootrol Ceoter is a power
fistribution center and a
junction
unit for con-
trol circuits of the cooplete phonograph. The
codrol ceoter iocludes a power supply, a play
coouol assembly, write-io, read-out aod seosing
circuits. The po*rer supply cooverts 120 volts
a.c. into the various voltaSes needed to operate
the iadividual chassis. The play control as-
seably starts the scanoing operation of the
Dechanism carriage and the! stoPs the cartiage
afrer rwo complete cycles. The write-io circuit
provides the necessary curiept for making a
selection. The read-out and sensiog circuits
provide the oecessary voltage for stoppiag the
Eechaniso at the selected record during a scao
operatioo.

b. Oscillating Circuit
The uoilunction oscillatot ptoduces positive
pulses at a repetitioo rate of 89 pulses per
second. This rate can be changed by adiust-
ing the speed contiol
(R2102).
This changes
the charge tioe of C2101. The output oi the
unijunctioo oscillator is used to drive ftee
running inverter at the desited frequency of
44.5 cycles. The ouaput is a square wave.
3. Adjustmerts
a. Frequency
The desired frequency for a turotable speed
of
)1-1/1 rpm. is approximately 44.5 cycles
and is checked by using a strobe disc oo the
tumtable. For 60 cycle operation, the pait
ouober of the strobe disc to be used is
!08487. For 50 cycle operatioo, the part
ouober of the strobe disc to be used is
,08478.
The adjustmeat is oade as follovs:
l. Replace a record with the appropriate auto
speed strobe disc. The light source fre-
queocy tnust conforo to the &equency in-
dicated on the strobe disc.
2. Press the appropriate ouEber aod letter
