Math 1210 Pipeline Project

As per my results below you will have the opportunity to decide which option is
the best route for our determined pipeline project. As requested we were able to
determine multiple scenarios to absolve any undisclosed issues that may arise
with a project of this nature. I hope that you will find this information useful and
particularly informative of our options.

If you would like further input to other possible scenarios we should be able to
provide the additional information necessary to make and educated decision. We
have been able to use surveying equipment to plot specific points of interest and
determine which plans would be suitable and we have realized that all the
options have difficulty involved but each scenario presents positive aspects
beyond cost association.

Heading east through the mountain and then south to the refinery

a. The total cost for this scenario would be $8.25million.
(25 miles (BLM ground) X $300,000) +$500,000 (drilling through the
mountain) + $100,000 (environmental impact study) + (3 x $50,000 (the
estimated delay of waiting for the environmental impact study)

Running from the well across the private ground

To run the pipeline through private land would be approximately $8 million.

(500,000)(25 + x^2)^0.5 + 300,000(20-x)
(500,000)[0.5(25 + x^2)^-0.5(2x)] + 300,000*(-1)
(500,000)(2x/2(25 + x^2)^-0.5)-300,000
[(500,000x)/((25 + x^2)^0.5)]-300,000 = 0
[(500,000x)/((25 + x^2)^0.5)] = 300,000
500,000x = 300,000(25 + x^2)^0.5
(5x/3)^2 = [(25 + x^2)^0.5]^2
25x^(2/9) = 25 + x^2
16x^(2/9) = 25
x = 3.75
(5^2 + 3.75^2)^0.5 = 6.25
20 3.25 16.25
6.25(300,000 + 200,000) + 16.25(300,000) = $8,000,000

Heading west, south, and then east to the refinery

a. The total cost for this scenario would be $8.1million.
27 miles (BLM ground) X $300,000

Determine the cost of running the pipeline the shortest distance (straight line
joining well to refinery across the private ground)

a. This option cost the most at $10,307,764, figured with an additional estimated
cost of $200,000 per mile for right-of-way fees, with just more than 20.6 miles of
pipeline.

This class has taught me many things that involves calculus and really makes it a
useful tool for real life scenario. I have enjoyed learning all the assignments that
really brought calculus into perspective. I feel that I will utilize calculus a lot more
than I had expected and it is exciting to be able to show people around me how
much math is involved in our society.
I feel that this has been my hardest class so far as it really pushes you to think
objectively. This isnt something that you would typically expect from a math class
as most general education courses lead you along the way and this class was far
from that. I often found myself being able to choose the way I approached many
projects and it was very intriguing to me.
I would like to conclude that summer semester is a handful and it has been a
pleasure to have such a great instructor who really understands what it takes to
learn and realizes that online students have a large plate beyond college course
work. I managed to keep up and it was only because of the generous opportunities
to work on these assignments.
$8,000,000.00 is our lowest
determination
