mit t ee for Concret e Reinforcement had been appr3ved by t he Civil Engi-
neering Division Council and t he St ruct t sral and Met als Division Council.
0.2 Much t ime, effort and expense can he saved in t he design office and at
t he sit e of work, if simple, clear and comprehensive drawings are prepared.
Different pract ices have hit hert o been followed in various design offices in
det ailing of reinforcing st eel in reinforced concret e st ruct ures and t his lids
quit e oft enresult ed in wast e of t ime and energy inint erpret at ion of designers
ideas and inst ruct ions by various agencies connect ed wit h fabricat ion and
placement of reinforcement and const ruct ion of reinforced concret e st rise-
t ures. It has beenat t empt ed in t his st andard t opresent unified and improved
met hods of preparing drawings for t he fabricat ionand placing of reinforcing
st eel in reinforced concret e st ruct ures. The use of t hcse improved met hods,
int is hoped, will not only result in bet t er reinforced concret e const roct iot t
but will also simplify and redt sce t he amount of work ordinasily required
t o prepar. ~eh drawings.
0.3 These recommendat ions shot sld be read in conjunct ion wit h 15: 456-
1964* and IS: 2502-1963t . While t he common met hods of det ailing of
reinforcement based on good pract ice have been recomnment led in t his
st andard, suit able deviat ions may he made in special cases, if warrant ed by
design requirement s, provided t hey sat isfy t he reqt siresnent s of IS 456-
1964* and IS 2502-1963t and ensure adeqt sat e safet y by analysis or t esl

2.4 Where bars end up in hooks or bends, as far as possible t he hooks and
bends shall be clearly indicat ed in t he drawing.
3. MARKS
3.1 Marks for Parts of Buildin gs Marks are used t o designat e t he
different st rt sct ural sneml)ers of a st ruct ure. Different st ruct ural members
of a st ruct ure shall be marked using symbols, abbreviat ions and not at ions
indicat ed in 2 and in t he manner indicat ed in 3.2 and 3.3.
3.2 A key framing plan shall be prepared t o a convenient scale and t he
t wo axes marked, one side wit h alphabet s A, B, C, et e, and t he ot her wit h
numbers ( see Fig. IA ). Normally wit h rect angular pat t ern, t he same key
frami~sg plan may be used for all floors. However, if arrangement of beams
vary for different floors a separat e key framing plan wit h grid arrangement
and axes may be used for each of t he floor. The floors shall be specified
in accordance wit h requirement s of IS: 2332~l963* and abbreviat ions BT
and MZ shall beused for basement and mezzanine respect ively, for example:

5. STRUCTURAL DRAWINGS
5.1 St ruct ural drawings prepared by t he designer shall show det ails of
reinforcement and all ot her informat ion needed for det ailing t he rein force-
men t. The drawings shall also indicat e by separat e not es, live loads, con-
cret e st rengt h, qualit y and grade of st eel, number of bars t o be lapped and
lengt hs of laps, concret e cover and if necessary, any special inst ruct ions
regat ding erect ion of fot m work, fabricat ion and placing of st eel.
5.2 It is always convenient t odet ail and fabricat e t he reinforcement by unit s
which generally consist of foot ings, walls, columns, each floor and roof. A
separat e st ruct ural drawing supplement ed by bar bending schedule should
preferably be made for each unit . For small st ruct ures t he ent ire require-
ment s may be handled as one unit . For a large project a part icular unit
such as floor may be divided t o correspond wit h t he const ruct ion schedule.
All sect ions should be kept as large as pract icable, since it is moreeconomical
t o fabricat e for large unit s, especially where t hereis liable t obe a duplica.t ion
of bars. All t he drawings inone set should preferably be of t hesame ssze.
5.2.1 Inbridgework, especially for t ypical designs t hat are oft en repeat ed
it is cust omary t o show t he det ails of reinforcement bars on t he general
drawing.
5.3 Toensure t hat all of t he reinforcement is properly placed or posit ioned
a unit , a longit udinal sect ion or cross-sect ionor bot h should be shown in
addit ion t o t he plan and elevat ionof t he unit on which t he bars are shown.

port ion shall not exceed 1 in 6 (see Fig. 6). In det ailing offset column
bars, a bar diamet er should be added t o t he desired offset ; and in t he
corners of square columns, t he bars should be offset on t he diagonal.
6.9.1 Longit udinal reinforcement bars in squarer or rect angular columns
should be offset bent int o t he column above. Lousgit udinal re-inforcing bars
in round columns wherecolumns size is not changed should be offset beat if
maximum number of bars are desired in t he column above. General
pract ice is t o sket ch t he offset for t he corner bars which should be bent
diagonally and make t his t he t ypical offset dim~nsion for all t he bars iii

6.9.4 Where column vert icals are offset bent , addit ional t ies shall be
provided and placed not more t han eight bar diamet ers from t he point
of bend. For pract ical purposes, t hree closely spaced t ies are usually used,
one of which may be part of t he regularly spaced t ies plus two extra ties.
The designer should indicat e t he general arrangement s of vert ical bars and
all t ie requirement s.
6.9.5 Welded splices or ot her posit ive connect ions may be used as but t

sect ion of spiral ) or by circular column t ies. This is necessary t o permit
placing of t hereinforcement in t hefloor syst em. Where st ub spirals areused,
t hey should be at t ached t o t he main spiral for t ransport at ion or carefully
ident ified by bar t ype numbers.
6.11.3 Piles Themost common use of spirals is in reinforced concret e
piles. They rest rain t he longit udinal bars during driving of t h e p i l e and
support t he st ruct ural loads. Piling spirals are generally furnished formed t o

When t hus used, t hey are generally mount ed on spaces t o hold t he spiral
firmly in place at t he desired pit ch during placing of t he concret e.
6.12 E dge Beams Where t he designer shows st irrups in any edge or
spandrel beam, t hese st irrups shall be closed and at least one longit udinal
bar shall be locat ed in each corner of t he beans sect ion, t he size of t his bar
t o be at least equal t o t he diamet er of t he st irrup but not less t han 12 mm
These det ails shall be clearly indicat ed by t he designer. Typical det ails
are shown in Fig. II for normal and upt urned edge or spandrel beams.
For easier placing of t he longit udinal bars in t he beam, det ails for t wo-
piece closed st irrups are also shown. For t he same reason, t he 900
