Dear Lions, Lion Ladies and Lion Cubs,

The Lionistic Year 2014-2015 has started with a bang on
welfare project activities under the captaincy of Ln. President
Krishnapriya Sudharshan, with able assistance from Ln. Sec-
retary Shoba Shrikanth and Ln. Treasurer Ramkumar Jothirmayam and
other Team members.

I join all the Club members to appreciate and congratulate the efforts
taken by the PST and the Team, on the Blood Donation Camp held at
Delphi TVS, where we could collect 103 units of Blood, which to my
knowledge is the best figure obtained in our club on a single day - single
location project so far, in the history of our Lions Club. Ln A. Augustine -
Immediate Past President deserves all the praise for initiating this pro-
ject. The presence and guidance of our Charter member
Ln. S.Krishnaswamy, during the camp has given added value to the con-
duct of the project, as he is one of the Founder members of Lions Blood
Bank.

The Eye Testing Camp started during July 2014, for Anganvadi children,
is a project worth mentioning, as this mega project is scheduled for 90
days on continuous basis, benefitting more than 3000 Anganvadi children
and their parents. This also would be the first of its kind in our club.

I take this opportunity to welcome the three new members to our club
Ln. Ganesan, Ln. Swaminathan Narayan and Ln. Krishnan Narayan, who
were inducted by our Past President Ln. M.C. Srikanth, during the 2
nd

monthly meeting held on Saturday the 26
th
July 2014, at Gandhi Nagar
Club, Adyar. (Their profiles can be seen in the pages to follow) I am sure
that they will enjoy Lionism in our club and take active participation in
various welfare projects for the needy community.

It is my desire that each and every Lion member in our club initiates at
least two projects during this year, and takes the lead and completes it
successfully.

I am sure that the present team will set higher standards of bench mark,
compared to the earlier years and bring laurels to our club, in the midst
of other clubs in our Lions Dist. 324A5.

With Best Wishes

novative ideas and active fellowship.
We have made a good start with the induction of three members, Ln. Ganesan, Ln. Swami-

At the outset, my heartiest greetings for a glorious Lionistic year 2014-15. It gives me great pride
to set down a few lines in the E-Bulletin of such a celebrated club like yours. I look forward the Co

task a much easier one and I am confident that our motto GROW AND GLOW will stand to gain the
most from this un- paralleled representation.

also participated in the colorful parade. I was installed as DG on 8th July by our International Presi-

followed-by the temple darshan and a special pooja at our central office. Prior to this, in June, the
RC & ZC schooling as well as PST Schooling and DC Schooling programs were completed. The re-
sponse to all these sessions was excellent. I thank the President Ln. Krishnapriya and Secretary Ln.
Shoba Srikanth of your club for attending the PST Schooling. I am sure that this will be of great use
to them in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities as Lion Officers. My thanks to Ln. Parvathy

Hearing loss Children by LL Dr Sudha Mahesh

Hearing loss remains the commonest social problem in India. The three group to focus are newborn,
school going children and industrial workers. Intervention at these critical stages and proper knowl-
edge dissemination to remove stigma of usage of Hearing Aids would go a long way in addressing
the problem at the beginning stage itself.

Almost 50% of children born with hearing loss do not have any risk factors and hence go unde-
tected. Universal newborn hearing tests which are mandatory in developed countries are slowly be-
ing implemented in few districts in India. Since six months to three years of age is crucial for lan-
guage development, speech and cognitive development, early diagnosis and intervention in the
form of a hearing aid or a cochlear implant is crucial.

In the preschoolers and school going children, middle ear infection is the commonest cause for
hearing loss due to frequent cold and adenotonsillitis, commonly referred as "Tonsils". Sometimes it
leads to non-infective fluid in the middle ear causing mild to moderate hearing loss. These children
are often misinterpreted to be arrogant, inattentive and having poor IQ. Health education to teach-
ers and parents play a vital role in identifying the problem.

Any unwanted sound is noise. 'One persons music may be other persons noise'. Noise induced
hearing loss typically occurs in high frequency (4000hertz). It is easily detected by doing an audio-
gram. People working in noisy environment, in industries and loud stereo are susceptible to it. Just
like one doesn't wear a helmet or seatbelt, personal protective devices like ear plugs are not strictly
being used. Health education to these employees is very essential in preventing the irreversible
damage by a preventable cause.

The social stigma attached to wearing a hearing aid as opposed to wearing a spectacle needs to be
changed. Severe and profound deafness poses a major risk to the safety of the individual and oth-
ers. Hence health education, motivation and monetary support will go a long way in the service to
the society at large.

Travelogue by Ln. S. Krishnaswamy

Me and VK had a different type of foreign jaunt this year- to the Himalayan Country
of BHUTAN, between 25
th
and 30
th
May 2014.
We landed in Paro, their International Airport, flying via New Delhi and drove straight to their capi-
tal city, Thimpu ,70 kms by road.. This is one of the smallest capital cities in the world. We stayed
in a beautiful resort hotel Terma Linka located on the banks of the river Wangchu, fabulous view of
mountains surrounding the city.
Bhutan is a landlocked country having Sikkim, Tibet, Assam and West Bengal.
Bhutan existed as a patchwork of minor warring fiefdoms until the early 17th century, when
the lama and military leader Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, fleeing religious persecution in Tibet,
unified the area and cultivated a distinct Bhutanese identity. Later, in the early 20th century,in
1907 the citizens who got tired of the constant warring among the tribal chiefs, opted for a unified
monarchy, and on 17
th
Dec 1907, Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuk became their first King. 17
th
Decem-
ber, thus is celebrated as the national day of Bhutan every year. The present King Dratsheng
Penlops, is the 5
th
king from the same dynasty. The previous King Jigme Singye Drachuka their
most benevolent and loved king, abdicated his throne in favor of the present King in 2008. In 2006,
based on a global survey, Business Week rated Bhutan the happiest country in Asia and the eighth-
happiest in the world. Bhutan is the only Asian country never to be colonized by any western coun-
try.
Our first outing after overnight rest, was to Memorial Chorten, a religious landmark in Thimpu, built
in honour of their 3
rd
king Jingme Dorji Wangchuk in 1974.Just like Trafalgar square in London, this
place has hundreds of pigeons being fed by the visitors. We then were taken to the Buddha view-
point, the high spot in Thimpu, on top of Kuensel Phodrang hill ,to have a panoramic view of the
Thimpu Valley. The largest Buddha Statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, in
sitting posture here, is a 51.5 metre tall bronze statue.
Next halt was at their Takin Preserve,or Mini Zoo, Motithang. The Takin is the national animal of
Bhutan, and looks like a cross between a cow and a goat. Legend has it that the animal was created
by the great Buddhist yogi, Drupa Kunley, and it can be found only in Bhutan and nearby areas.
Thereafter we peeped into the National Library, where in addition to a large collection of old price-
less Buddhist manuscripts, we also saw the largest book, as per Guiness book of records. This book
has 114 pages and when open is 5ft X 7ft in size. This Library also serves as the painting school,
Zorig Chusum, for a 6 years training in 13 Bhutanese traditional arts and crafts. The visit to the
Textile Museum followed, where we saw the display of Bhutanese garments, and also the weaving
centre duplicating the traditional weaving centre, Lhuentse Dzongkhag, in North east Bhutan, the
ancestral home of the royal family. Just outside the textile museum you find a long row of shops,
selling Bhutanese souveniers, handicrafts etc called Craft Bazaar.
The last halt of the day was at the Trashi Chhoe Dzong. The present dzong was built in the 18th
century by Shabdrung Rinpoche to house government officials. Later it was enlarged to accommo-
date both the monastic and civil bodies.
Three times suffering severe damage from fire and once from an earthquake in 1897, much of the
historic building dates from the rebuilding in 1902. To accommodate the national government and
the central monastic body, the dzong was totally refurbished and enlarged in 1962, a year after
Thimphu was designated the nation's capital. We returned to the hotel for a well earned rest.

Visit to Bhutan
Bhutan, spread over 300kms X 150 kms, is divided into 20 districts , called Dzonkhags, and each
district has an administrative set up located in a Dzong, a structure like a fortress, for the adminis-
trative as well as monastic management. The Bhutanese national language is Dzongkha. The popu-
lation of Bhutan is just over 7 lakhs, and about one lakh out of it live in capital Thimpu. They have
over 23 languages/ dialects being spoken in this small population!! Bhutan apparently has been in-
habited since 2000 BC, and Buddhism came to the country in 7
th
century AD. The present religious
Chief Abbot, is 72

nd in succession. Their national animal is Takin, national bird is crow, and na-
tional game is archery.
Our next day was spent in our long road trip to Punakha Valley, 137 kms away from Thimpu, On
our way to Punakha we halted at Dochula Viewpoint, a pass at a height of 3100 aboveMSL. On a
good sunny dya one can have a panoramic view of snowcapped mountain peaks of the Himalayan
range here, (we were not lucky). There is a memorial of 108 stupa like structures ,called the 108
Chortens, for those who were slain when their 4
th
King himself lead an army to get rid of the mil-
tants from N E India who had established their camps there.
Punakha is supposed to be the place with tropical climate in Bhutan, due to its low altitude.
Punakha therefore is used as the winter capital of Bhutan. Punakha used to have one of the best
public schools of Bhutan, run by Jesuit priests, but the Bhutanese government threw away all the
missionaries and took over these institutions. Punakha has facilities for rafting sport in the local
river
The local attraction is the Fertilty temple - Chimil Hakhang, built in 1499 , on a hillock, by the
cousin of Lama Drukpa Kunley, also known as the divine madman, who supposedly subdued the
local demoness of Dochula by using his magic thunderbolt of wisdom. Childless women go to this
temple to pray before the wooden effigy of thunderbolt kept here to be blessed by the saint to be-
get a child. It is a 20 minutes walk along muddy and dusty path through agricultural fields of mus-
tards and rice, leading to a hillock , then another climb of about 30 minutes, where the monastery
and the chorten are situated.
Punakha Dzong. Our main attraction was the Punakha Dzong, majestically standing on an island
between the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. This city's dzong is one of the most
photogenic of all Bhutan's ancient fortresses, and you see pictures of it hanging in hotels and res-
taurants throughout the country. The dzong is joined to the mainland by an arched wooden bridge,
and contains many precious relics from the days when successive kings reigned the kingdom from
this valley. The dzong serves as the winter home of the Head Lama or Rimpoche, of the monastic
body, as well as for the Royal family, when they visit Punakha.
The long drive back to Thimpu followed by a well earned rest at our hotel.
After a leisurely breakfast next day, we were ready to leave Thimpu, to go back to Paro for our
next halt. It was a 70 kms return road drive. On the way we saw the oldest suspension bridge,
called the Chedempa-Iron Bridge, across the river, used for walking only, but now in disuse, due to
safety considerations.
We started with the National Museum of Paro. This is a very informative museum located in the
watch tower originally built to protect the Taksang Monastery. Bronzes, tea kettles, paintings, and
handicraft items numbering over 3000, and covering over 1500 years of Bhutan history were found
here.
After this visit we were taken to try out the Bhutanese national dress for a photo op and also to try
our hand at Archery, the Bhutanese National sport.

P A G E 2 2
We returned to our Resort Hotel Nak Sel perched on top of a hillock, with a wonderful view of the
snow capped Himalayan mountains. This Resort is located at 2700 M height, and was built over 6
years using traditional Bhutanese materials- mud, timber, slate, stone etc, and opened only in
2010.
Next day after breakfast the visit was to the Tigers Nest Monastery, the highlight of Bhutan.
Taktsang Monastery, (Tiger's Nest). Precariously perched on the edge of a 1,200 meter cliff, this
monastery creates an impressive sight, and is the unofficial symbol of Bhutan. It is about 2-3 hour,
totally up-hill hike from the parking lot to the monastery. The hike up to the Tiger's Nest can be
very strenuous and you can rent a horse to go up the mountain, and you have to make your way
down the mountain by foot. Taktsang was established as a sacred place for meditation by Guru Rin-
poche who visited the site on his second visit to Bhutan in 747 AD, though the first monastery was
not constructed until 1694. In 1998 a tragic fire destroyed most of the original buildings, but these
have since been painstakingly restored to their former glory. Due to practical reasons we decided to
rather have a good look at the monastery from the base camp itself !!
We instead went to see Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most beautiful temples in Bhutan.
It is believed to have been built in 659 AD, by a Tibetan King Songsten Gampo, to pin down the left
foot of a giant ogress who was thwarting the attempts to establish Buddhism in Tibet, and is sup-
posed to be the oldest of 108 temples built to subdue the demoness residing in the Himalayas.
In Bhutan, the land is fertile and the population small. The current generation receives free educa-
tion, free, though rudimentary, medical care. The sale of tobacco products is banned and smoking
in public areas is a fineable offense.Major sources of income for the kingdom are tourism, hydroe-
lectric power and agriculture.
While traditional culture has been very well preserved, the opening of the country to TV and inter-
net in 1999 has had a major effect, and modern-day culture is mostly centred on bars
and snooker halls. As a result, there is very little or no evidence of quality contemporary art, thea-
tre or music.
Culturally, Bhutan is predominantly Buddhist with Dzongkha as a national language, and a common
dress code and architectural style. Bhutanese people primarily consist of the Ngalops and Shar-
chops, called the Western Bhutanese and Eastern Bhutanese, and Lhotshamphas (Southern Bhutan-
ese), a people of Nepalese Gurkha Origin, respectively. The Ngalops primarily consist of Bhutanese
living in the western part of the country. Their culture is closely related to that of their neighbor to
the north, Tibet.
Bhutan fully depends on India for all its requirements, and the major Hydel projects in Bhutan are
all built by Indian engineers, under an AID program. India buys back the surplus power from Bhu-
tan. Though their local currency is Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN), which has a par value with Indian
Rupee, Indian rupees are freely accepted everywhere.
Next day early morning we flew back to New delhi via Khatmandu. The day was a sunny day and we
had the good fortune of flying over the snow capped massive Himalayan range- what a magnificient
view!!!
The captain went on reeling out the names of all the peaks and thei heights, and the piece de resis-
tance was MOUNT EVEREST, which we were very fortunate to have a clear glimpse from top.

sent an agent to investigate him.

plus free room and board. Then there's the mentally challenged guy. He works about 18 hours every day and
does about 90% of the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and
I buy him a bottle of Bundaberg rum and a dozen Crown Lagers every Saturday night so he can cope with
life. He also gets to sleep with my wife occasionally".

ATO AUDITOR: "That's the guy I want to talk to - the mentally challenged one".
Boat Owner: "That'll be me. What'd you want to know?

LCIF Awards Humanitarian Grants
More than US$3.1 million was awarded in Lions Clubs Inter-
national Foundation grants during the June/July 2014 Board
of Directors meeting in Toronto, Canada. Through these
funds, 72 grants will support life-changing projects around
the world. Lions will provide hospital equipment in Brazil,
support clean water projects in Madagascar, Mali and Niger,
provide children's vision screening equipment in Greece, ex-
pand a school for the blind in the United States, and much
more. Lions will help millions of people worldwide through
these grants, which were made possible through your sup-
port. Thank you for your contributions to LCIF

Dear Lion, When I became president of Lions Clubs International, it was a dream come true. Now, I am hon-
ored to follow another dream as Chairperson ofLions Clubs
International Foundation. The Foundation is a vital part of
Lions' international service efforts, so I am looking forward
to seeing what we can achieve this year with support from
LCIF. Last year, LCIF set a goal to raise US$35.7 million in
funding to meet Lions' humanitarian needs worldwide. I am
proud to say that you hit that mark! More than ever, Lions
are involved in service projects to meet the needs of their
communities. LCIF has seen an increase in requests for dis-
aster relief assistance in recent years; Lions Quest continues
to expand around the world, reaching more students than
ever; we continue to fight preventable blindness, including
from diseases like trachoma and river blindness; and we con-
tinue in our commitment to our partners at the GAVI Alli-
ance in fighting measles, among many other humanitarian
projects. Your contributions have helped people all around
the world by providing disaster relief, saving sight, preventing measles, supporting youth and meeting humani-
tarian needs. To be able to help even more people, we have a new goal to raise US$38.3 million for LCIF and
I know that we will be able to achieve it. In fact, I am going to challenge you to set the goal even
higher! What if every Lions club donated US$100 per member to LCIF? We would raise US$136 million -
imagine all of the good that could be done with those funds! As Lions, we can do almost anything. By work-
ing together, we can help each other to follow our dreams for a better world. You can make a difference, and
LCIF can help. Sincerely, Barry J. PalmerChairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation
