A couple of Sundays
ago we had a great
service at Cobden. We
had a number of visitors
and the message
provoked a lot of discussion. The topic
however of a Christian's response to
war was a sensitive one for some and
aroused a number of strong emotions,
that were then expressed in quite a
strong way in the service.
I want to say quite clearly that I have
no problem with people feeling strongly
about subjects, expressing differing
opinions and even asking questions
because our church is and should be a
safe place where people can feel free
to express themselves within the
context of a loving and supportive
community.
However I also want to say that safety
goes both ways and if in the strength of
the opinions expressed others feel
unsafe then that expression needs to
be re-thought. Expressing oneself is
fine but we need to be careful that we
always do so in a way that doesn't hurt
others unnecessarily.
