behavior and requirements of buildings with

hardware of computers and software’s used for drafting and presentation of an architectural
drawing. Introduction to CAD software, All the commands in latest version of CAD in 2-D
and their application to make drawings and working drawings.
2 Detailed study of softwares used for drafting: Introduction to layers, editing
techniques, printing and plotting. Drawing simple 3D forms.
3 Detailed study of softwares used for making presentations and general
administrative work: Preparation of text or documents by using word processor software.
e.g. MS WORD, LOTUS WORDPRO etc. Analysis of collected data in the form of
spreadsheets and its presentation through graphs, pie charts etc. e.g. MS EXCEL, LOTUS
123 etc. Preparing advanced presentations by making slide show using presentation
software. e.g. MS POWERPOINT, MACROMEDIA DIRECTOR, PHOTOSHOP,

4 Study of other relevant computer applications: Creating and using databases in
computers using database management softwares e.g. DBASE, FOXPRO etc. Introduction to
concepts of LAN, WAN, Internet and intranet and the applications like Internet Browser,

1.4.2 Prerequisites and Objectives


Course Prerequisites: Course Objectives: After successful completion of this
• Building Construction and Materials - course, student should be able to:
I • Understand the basic building elements, their
function and behavior under various conditions with
specific reference to ‘Load bearing Construction’ and
simple non RCC frame structure.
• Develop strong sense of intuition, understanding of
the basic principles of construction and materials
and develop analytical and logical sequence in
thinking.
Studio: Sufficient number of projects to cover the topics mentioned should be worked in class.
Stress should be given on self study and site visits to understand the basics of construction
technology together with drawings. Students are expected to complete the projects, with critical
remarks and assessment from the counselor, during the semester. At the End Examination, due
credit will be given to interaction on the on-line Discussion Forum between the student and the
Counselor. The emphasis should be on understanding the fundamental principles and
constructional details suitable for Indian Conditions rather than copying from foreign books. Stress
should be given on self study and site visits to understand the basics of construction technology
together with drawings.

Carpentry and joinery work.
2 Materials: Study of following building with their characteristics, available market forms,
preservation, appropriate use and common tests. Timber, bamboo, Thatch, Roofing tiles.
3 Timber doors: Simple timber joinery, Doors – Frameless, ledged, braced, battened, paneled,
glazed, solid and hollow core flush and their combinations.
4 Timber windows: Windows – frameless, ledged, battened, glazed etc.
5 Timber Staircases: terminology, types and construction details.
6 Timber Roofs: terminology, function, possible shapes and construction of sloping , Lean
to, coupled, collar roofs , etc, Fixing of tiles for roofs.
7 Timber floors: Framed construction – single and double floors.
8 Timber balconies: terminology, types and construction details.
