The secret to a happy child
(hate1er yo"r #ac!gro"nd, whate1er yo"r social stat"s or howe1er m"ch money yo" earn, &
don-t care who yo" are6 if yo"-re a lo1ing parent yo" will want the 1ery #est for yo"r child$
S"re we might want them to #e rich, good loo!ing, s"ccessf"l, #"t mostly we '"st want them
to #e happy and healthy$
B"t there is a lin! #etween health, happiness and s"ccess$ So of co"rse we want o"r !ids to
grow "p to get 'o#s and earn eno"gh to get #y to ens"re their happiness and s"ccess$
No one can g"arantee yo"r child-s f"t"re, and &-m certainly not going to do that$ B"t & will
tell yo" one !ey that will most definitely get things going in the right direction$ )r at least,
witho"t this, there-s a pretty good chance yo"r child will str"ggle in life$
&f yo" want yo"r child to ha1e the #est chance at a #right f"t"re, if yo" want them to ha1e a
#etter start in life than perhaps yo" had, if yo" want to open the door to opport"nities, to
impro1e their f"t"re 'o# prospects and earning potential, then yo" need to ma!e s"re of this
one thing<
Your child must learn to read.
)!, so that so"nds pretty o#1io"s, and yo"r child goes to school so that sho"ld ta!e care of
things$ B"t do yo" !now if yo"r child is learning to read =well= at school/ *re yo" doing all
yo" can at home to help/
By getting in1ol1ed with yo"r child-s learning yo" can ha1e a #etter relationship with yo"r

all their classes, their #eha1io"r and attention will impro1e and if yo"r child doesn-t en'oy
going to school, things co"ld really change for the #etter$
Beca"se children who learn to read can read to learn and that means reading affects e1ery
aspect of their school life$ &f yo" want life to impro1e for yo"r child right now, yo" need to
ma!e s"re of this one thing<
Your child must be learnin to read.
&f yo"-re sa1ing for yo"r child-s f"t"re, hoping to send them off to "ni1ersity witho"t
worrying a#o"t the cost, then yo"-re doing a great thing$ B"t if yo" want yo"r child to get
there, yo" need to #e s"re they-re on trac! with their reading right now$ 5ay#e they will

YOU are %our child"s most im$ortant teacher
*ccording to research #y the National Literacy r"st, parents are the most important reading
role models for children and yo"ng people and helping o"r children learn to read is almost
certainly the one single thing we can do to impro1e their chances in life$ (ith that in mind,
it-s pretty worrying that only 1 in A parents easily find the opport"nity to read to their
children$
he thing is, children who are read to reg"larly ha1e higher le1els of 1oca#"lary and
comprehension s!ills, so ma!ing the time for #oo!s and demonstrating that we 1al"e reading
is s"re to ha1e a positi1e impact on their learning$
By '"st ma!ing a little #it of time e1ery day to properly foc"s on o"r children, reading to
them and, when they-re ready, listening to them read to "s we can ha1e the most profo"nd
effect on their f"t"re well#eing$ ;ow amaHing is that/
*nd if yo"-re wondering if yo"r child is too yo"ng to learn to read, the answer is DNo+-$
Learning to read starts way #efore we wor! o"t what the s2"iggles on a page mean$ &t starts
with listening to people tal!ing to "s as #a#ies, and grasping the #asic principles of lang"age$
So yo" can, and sho"ld, start from #irth$ &n fact we nat"rally start #efore that, as #a#ies learn
the so"nd of their mother-s 1oice while in the wom#$
&f yo" want to !now if it-s too early to start teaching Dproper- reading tho"gh, then the answer
is still pro#a#ly Dno-$ 3o" !now yo"r child #etter than anyone, and if yo" thin! they-re
showing an interest then go for it+
(hen yo" engage with yo"r child-s attempts to read yo" can #e gen"inely pro"d of their

&hat"s ne't(
Engaging with yo"r child-s reading is '"st the first step$ o find o"t more a#o"t how to

An introduction to phonics
Let-s #e honest, Dphonics- can #e #affling$ (ere yo" ta"ght to read "sing phonics methods/
:ro#a#ly not, and that ma!es it to"gh for "s parents to get o"r heads ro"nd the way o"r !ids
are learning to read at school$ he one thing yo" need to !now a#o"t phonics is that it isn-t all
there is to reading+
;owe1er, these days most children in the GF are ta"ght to read "sing phonics as the first
strategy when they come across an "nfamiliar word$ &f we-re to help with reading at home,
we need to get the hang of phonics too$
*s parents we are o"r children-s #est teachers$ (e !now o"r !ids #etter than anyone6 we
ha1e the freedom to teach where, when and how we want and o"r children nat"rally want to
please "s$ eaching o"r children anything co"ldn-t #e easier, right/
(ell, not 2"ite$ he pro#lem is we-re often afraid of getting it wrong$ (e worry we will
conf"se o"r children #y not teaching the same way as at school, or we-ll p"sh them too hard
or not hard eno"gh$ oo often this means we parents don-t do anything at all$
&t doesn-t ha1e to #e li!e this$ :arents who are confident in their a#ility to s"pport their

here is clear e1idence that the systematic synthetic phonics approach wor!s and research

called the simple phonic code, and progressing thro"gh to the most comple. I it is the most
effecti1e way of teaching yo"ng children to read$
By learning to read "sing phonics, children learn to decode almost any word$ his means
they do not rely on pict"res or conte.t to wor! o"t words, which is 1ital as they #egin reading

hro"gh phonics children learn the indi1id"al letter so"nds 8phonemes9, s"ch as JoJ and JpJ$

Children learn so"nds in gro"ps, starting with the simplest so"nds that together ma!e "p
short, easy to decode words, s"ch as JrJ JeJ JdJ K red and JcJ JaJ JtJ K cat$
:erhaps what conf"ses parents most a#o"t phonics is that there are more so"nds in the
English lang"age than letters in the alpha#et, which is why some so"nds are represented #y
more than one letter % for e.ample Ds- and Dh- together ma!e a Dsh- so"nd, as in the word
