Test - In-situ density sand
replacement (small cone), dia.100mm
Method - BS13! "art #, 1##0, $.1,
%his is the most &idely used method for determining the in-
situ density of earth&or's layers (y direct measurements of
mass and volume. %he method is applica(le for natural or
compacted fine to medium grained soil layers up to 1)0mm
thic'.
*s a compaction control, the test is normally re+uired &ith
la(oratory compaction test ($.) 'g or ,.) 'g rammer) to
determine the degree of site compaction relative to
la(oratory ma-imum dry density and optimum moisture
content. %he la(oratory test that is charged separately and
can (e carried out at the .a(oratory/s permanent facility (as

situ density of (ac'fill layers (eg. granular su( (ase- crusher
run) (y direct measurements of mass and volume. %he
method is applica(le for natural or compacted fine to coarse-
grained soil layers e-ceeding1)0mm, (ut not e-ceeding

Test - In-situ density core cutter,
dia.100mm
Method - BS13! "art #,
1##0, $.,
%his method may (e less accurate than the sand
replacement method test. It is used if speed is essential and
the soil is sufficiently soft and &ell compacted for the cutter
to (e driven easily. *s a compaction control, the test is
normally re+uired &ith la(oratory compaction test ($.) 'g or

Test - Insitu 2B3
Method - BS13! "art #, 1##0, ,.3
%his method is is used to chec' the +uality of su( grade and
to determine the strength of granular su(-(ase (crusher run)
during road construction. %he test primarily involves shear
deformation of the soil (eneath a standard )0mm dia.

4 %esting 3ate is not inclusive of reaction load. %he cost of
providing the reaction load shall (e (orne (y the client. 5or
investigation on e-isting roads, traffic management cost and
stipulated &or'ing time may have to (e considered.
Test - "avement 2oring (.100 or
dia.1)0) mm
%his method is used to chec' the thic'ness of pavement and
the defined layers such as overlay, &earing course, (inder
course or even 6acadam course (old road).
5or investigation on e-isting roads, traffic management cost
and stipulated &or'ing time may have to (e considered.
Test - 7ynamic 2one "enetration
(72")
Method - 3ef! %33. 8 %3. .td., 9.:.
%his method is used for rapid measurement of the structural
properties of e-isting road pavements &ith un(ound granular
materials. %he rate of penetration of the cone, &hen driven
(y a standard force is inversely related to the 2B3 test.
;here the pavement and su(-grade layers have different
strengths, the (oundaries (et&een the layers and the
thic'ness of layers can (e estimated.

specification provisions,
