3. PRINCIPLE
3-1 Principle of Angular Measurement
(1) Principle
The pattern of the scale is divided into 1260 lines of equal pitch. The line width of the signal "R" is stable.
The line width of the signals "A", "B" and "C" is modulated according to the different cycles. (Fig. 1)
The signals are arranged in the order of "R" , "A", "B" and "C". When the pattern of the scale is projected,
the waveform is generated on the CCD. (Fig. 2) Obtain an integral value by every four waveform lines and
find out the line whose change is the smallest. It is "R" because the "R" width is stable. When you have found
out "R", the next is "A" and then "B" and "C" . Therefore the frequency of "A", "B" and "C" can be obtained.
(Fig. 3)
First, carry out Fourier transformation (DFT) for the equal-pitch signals to execute the accurate calculation of
1 pitch (1028 seconds) or less. Secondly, arrange the waveforms of the frequency for the "A", "B" and "C", obtain
each phase and, by combining the phases, obtain the angle of the block including "A", "B" and "C". Thirdly, obtain
the angle of the pitch unit by using the kind of the pattern including the reference position. Finally, combine
the accurate and rough calculations and arrange the digits to obtain the angular measurement value.

3-2 Principle of Distance Measurement
(1) Principle
Light is emitted to the corner cubes placed on the ground being measured. The amount of the light delay
between the instrument and corner cube can be measured from the reflected light and this value is converted
to distance.
Topcon EDMs modulate light at the four frequencies of 30MHz, 1.8MHz, 117kHz and 113kHz so that dis-
tances of up to several kilometers can be measured accurately and displayed. The processes are as follows.
One of the four frequencies (30MHz, 1.8MHz, 117kHz and 113kHz) is selected by the control signal from
the CPU and the modulated light is emitted by the LED.
The light is reflected by the corner cube and returns.
The returned light undergoes the following in the amplifier.
Amplification: the signal is enhanced.
Mixed wave detection: the frequency component is made 3.6kHz.
Waveform rectification: the light is made into the frequency measurement signal.
A/D conversion is done for the measurement signal obtained by and it is changed into the distance data
by the microcomputer.
Perform the procedures to at each of the frequencies, 30MHz, 1.8MHz, 117kHz and 113kHz. The
"C" mark of the indicator moves to indicate the status.
The CPU combines the results from each of the frequencies and displays the distance.

Display unit
Display unit cable
Check the operation of the power switch on the normal and reverse sides. If only
the reverse (or normal) side operates normally, the normal (or reverse) display
unit may malfunction. Replace the unit (display unit, display unit cable, etc.) and
check the operation.

2 How to operate the tool
1) Explanation of switches
POWER: Turns ON/OFF the tool power sup-
ply.
CHOPPER: Changes the chopper direction,
from "inside" (INT) to "outside" (EXT) and
vice versa. (Also turns ON/OFF.)
CIRCULAR: This is a switch of circular oper-
ation.
CIRCULAR Rotary SW: Changes the direc-
tion of circular rotation.
2) How to check operation
Chopper operation: Set "distance measure-
ment" in the instrument and change the switch
from "INT" to "EXT". If the product is nor-
mal, you can check a red circle (in "EXT")
through the objective unit. If you see a red cir-
cle in "INT", the motor may not operate nor-
mally.
Circular operation: As checking the REF. Si
signal waveform on the synchroscope, operate
the CIRCULAR switch. If the product is nor-
mal, the rotation is stable. If the waveform
changes according to the stable rotation, there
is no problem. If the motor stops rotating dur-
ing operation, it is necessary to replace the
motor.

Install the optical receiving fiber adapter (ST-ID-
8A), optical receiving fiber cap, and optical emit-
ting fiber cap on the illuminator (ST-ID-01~03).
Use the collimator to focus the optical receiving
and optical emitting images.
Obtain the read values of the micrometer when the
optical emitting image is in focus and when the
optical receiving image is in focus and calculate
the difference between the two read values. Insert
the adjusting washer (0.1, 0.05 or 0.02) equivalent
to the difference into the fiber cap.
When the difference between the read values is
positive :
Insert the washer into the optical receiving
fiber cap.
When the difference between the read values is
negative :
Insert the washer into the optical emitting
fiber cap.
Focusing accuracy: 0.02
(Example)
Read value when the optical emitting image is
in focus: 6.55
Read value when the optical receiving image
is in focus: 6.50
Difference between the read values:
6.55-6.50=+0.05
In the above case, insert the adjusting washer of
0.05 into the optical receiving fiber cap.

Set the chopper to distance measurement side by
using the tool (ST-DK-05). While viewing from
the objective side, a 0.5 point of light should be
visible on either half of the lens.
EDM axis alignment
Move the dichroic holder and the base to align the
optical emitting image with the center of the scale.
(1) Face the EDM base toward the collimator and
move it forward and backward. The optical
emitting image will then move right and left.
(2) Move the dichroic holder in the turning direc-
tion.
The optical emitting image will then move up
and down.
Use the dichroic holder to move the image by
1' in the vertical direction. In other cases,
you can use the up/down reticle adjustment
screws.
EDM focusing
Turn the objective lens unit and adjust while look-
ing through the servicing collimator's eyepiece.
To focus the EDM axis, adjust the optical emitting
image to be fit to the center of the scale while
monitoring the result of turning the objective lens
unit. When the objective unit and the dichroic
holder are moved, the intersection of the horizon-
tal axis and line of sight will be incorrect. There-
fore, readjust so that the EDM axis (optical
emitting image) is fit to the center of the scale.
Alignment accuracy of 50" or less.
Note: After the adjustment, the height zero
position will be incorrect. Be sure to exe-

(1) Linearity
30MHz is used for the distance measurement frequency of the instrument. The points for measurement are
different from the models of 15MHz.
Although there are several ways to check the linearity, the following is a simple and sure way.
Setting the base line site
The base line site is to be on solid ground (concrete, etc.). Avoid direct sunlight. A distance of about 20
meters must be allowed.
Set the point in a concrete block of at least 30-cm square.
As referring to the near distance measurement accuracy items shown on JSIMA102, set points for measure-
ment. The following table shows the example of point. The setting error must be 5 cm.
Use steel tape to measure the distance (reference value) of each point.
Accuracy must be 1 mm.
Measurement
Set up the instrument at the 0 m point, and prepare a check sheet as shown below and record the data for
each point. Record the data for 10 measurements at each point.

After the measurements, check the instrument constant (S).
The instrument constant (S) can be obtained as follows:
Constant (s) =
To input the EDM instrument constant (S), follow the description of the instrument constant (S) input method
in this manual.
(2) Long distance linearity
Setting the base line site
At a distance more than 300 meters away, install two points to be used for setting the prism. Select a site
with favorable atmospheric conditions. Use three prisms.
Measurement
To measure the reference point, use the EDM and average the values from two or three EDMs.
For long distances, the distance will vary slightly (normally by 10 mm) due to the atmospheric conditions.
Therefore, calibrate the unit once a month.
Note : Also take the PPM correction into account.
(3) Measurement test
Make sure the specification measurement distance is satisfied.

APPENDIX2. Precaution When Charging or Storing Batteries
The capacity of battery will be affected and its service life shortened in any of the following cases while it is
recharged, discharged or stored.
APPENDIX2-1 Recharging
Fig. 1 shows how ambient temperature at recharging is related to charging efficiency or how it affects the dis-
charge capacity. As seen from the figure, charging at normal temperature is best, and the efficiency decreases
as the temerature rises. It is best, therefore, to always recharge the battery at normal temperature to obtain full
use of battery capacity and enjoy maximum operation per charge. And the service life of your battery will be
shortened if it is frequently overcharged or recharged at high temperature.
(Note: 0.1C charge means that the battery is recharged with 0.1-time current against its capacity.)
APPENDIX2-2 Discharge
Fig. 2 shows the discharge temperature characteristics. Discharge characteristics at high temperature are the
same as those at normal temperature. The battery is likely to have the reduced discharge capacity as well as
lower discharge voltage when discharged at low temperature. And the service life of your battery will be
shortened if it is greatly overcharged.
(Note: 1C discharge means one with 1-time current over battery capacity.)

APPENDIX2-3 Storage
See Fig. 3 for how storing period at different temperature levels is related to the remaining capacity. The bat-
tery will lose its capacity as storage temperature rises and the storage period increases. This does not mean,
however, that the battery performance is damaged when the battery is stored. The battery, reduced in capacity,
will be restored once it is recharged. Always recharge your battery before use. And recharge and discharge
the battery 3 or 4 times to restore its capacity if it has been stored for a long period or at high temperature.
Storing at high temperature can adversely affect the service life of your battery.
Your battery has been fully charged before leaving the factory, but its capacity may be affected considerably
when it takes several months to reach you, if it is stored at high temperature area or passes through a high-tem-
perature region. Then, the battery must be recharged and discharged 3~4 times to fully restore its capacity.
And the battery should always be stored at normal temperature or lower if it will not be used for any long
period. This helps your battery have a longer service life.
