Slightly fewer Hamilton School District students took the
ACT test, but the scores tied for the highest in a time period
taking back to the 2009-10 school year.
The ACT is a college prep test taken by students nation-
wide in which students are judged on a 1-36 scale. The
statewide composite score among 46,870 students was
22.2, up from 22.1 the previous year.
Our 2014 graduates did a fine job on the ACT, State
Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers said in a state-
ment. Their efforts, along with support from their teachers
and parents, have resulted in statewide ACT scores that are
second in the nation among ACT-taking states.
There were 266 Hamilton students who took the test this
past year, down from 285 in the 2012-13 graduating class.
The district composite score was 24.1.
District spokesperson Denise Dorn Lindberg noted the
score is the highest in district history. She added that when
the district first attained the score during the 2009-10 school
year, there were 37 fewer students who took the test that
year.
The ACT is important because many people are familiar
with what it is and they are able to see how a school is doing
in preparing students for postsecondary success, Lindberg
stated. There are a number of assessments our students take
and they have different purposes.
She added that a balanced assessment program

which includes classroom assessments, district
benchmark and standardized tests help pro-
vide a picture of a students academic
progress.
Lindberg also noted that high school jun-
iors will be required to take the ACT Aspire
test starting this year.
Because so many of our students already
take the ACT, it will not have as big an impact
on our high school as it might in other com-
munities, she said.
Falls results
Officials in the School District of
Menomonee Falls are pleased with the most
recent results of district students who took the
ACT test.
The composite score among the 291
Menomonee Falls district students who took
the test was 23.7. District officials noted the
results are the highest number of students
earning the highest score since the state
began keeping test records in 1995.
We are pleased that the hard work of
our students and staff is paying off. Along
with our record Advanced Placement test par-
ticipation and performance, we continue to
raise the bar on education in Menomonee
Falls, High School Principal Corey Golla
said in statement issued by the district. Our
students and staff are modeling the focus, cre-
ativity and grit that are essential for sustained
improvement in all fields. It is exciting to see
these results.
Our teachers have done tremendous
work the last three years to align assessments
and units with the ACT college and career
readiness standards, Director of Curriculum
and Instruction Gary Kiltz added. As a result
of this alignment work, we are seeing divi-
dends with increased scores the last two
years.
Superintendent Patricia Greco said the
collective effort of staff to take steps to
increase scores is now paying off.
We continue to align our curriculum to
the ACT skill strands for college readiness,
and our programs to the high-demand job
markets. We have developed strong partner-
ships with higher education to prepare our stu-
dents for the next steps. Our staff members
across the system are working hard together
infuse the college level of questioning and
problem solving, Greco said.

The Schauer Community School of
the Arts announces visual art classes and
workshops for students ages 6 to 18
starting in September. Youth visual arts
classes encourage individual expression
and provide opportunities to work direct-
ly with professional artists. Classes will
be held at the Schauer Arts & Activities
Center, 147 N. Rural Street in downtown
Hartford. Art supplies are included and
no experience is needed.
Classes include:
Creative Canvas on Monday,
September 8 for ages 7-12 with an adult
from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Spend a fun
evening with a friend or family member
creating a masterpiece on a single can-
vas while listening to music. Participants
will be guided step-by-step through the
process in a relaxed setting.
Fall Gallery Days on Mondays,
Sept. 15-Oct. 20 for ages 7-13 from
4:30-5:30 p.m. Students will make last-
ing seasonal projects that are inspired by
a wide variety of materials. Projects
include a 3-D scarecrow on a tile, sun-
flower vase, fall leaves painted with
watercolor, a detailed birch tree with
acrylics, and a landscape silhouette on
watercolor paper.
Fall into Clay on Thursdays, Sept.
18-Oct. 9 for ages 6-14 from 4:45-6:15
p.m. Combine clay with natural beauty
of falls elements like fallen leaves and
pine cones. Students will use basic hand-
building techniques to create finished
pieces that reflect fall beauty.
To register for classes or request a
brochure, contact the Schauer Center by
phone at (262) 670-0560, ext. 4 or in
person, Monday through Friday from
11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at 147 N. Rural
Street in Hartford. For a complete list of
classes and descriptions, or to register
online visit SchauerCenter.org/CSA.
Tuition fees apply, but financial aid and
payment plans are available upon
request to those who qualify.
