ECEN 5737: Adjustable Speed Drives

Optional HW
Due May 3, 2013

This homework is entirely optional. If you choose to complete it, your lowest homework score
will be replaced by your score on this homework. If your score on this homework is your lowest
homework score then it will be dropped from you grade. In other words, completing this
homework can only help your grade, not hurt it.

1. A permanent magnet synchronous machine has the following parameters. You may neglect
friction and power electronic losses.
Stator resistance R 10 m
d-axis inductance Ld 200 H
q-axis inductance Lq 300 H
Magnet flux linkage
af
( in PLECS) 0.25 Wb-turns
Inertia J 1 kg-m
2
Numper of pole pairs (P/2) 1
Load torque constant k
load
50e-7 Nm/(rpm)
2
Maximum phase current (I
max
) 1000A
Hysteresis band 30A
DC bus voltage (V
dc
) 400V

Using PLECS, implement a drive for this motor using each of the control strategies
summarized on slide 8 of lecture 22. Note that this slide has been corrected since it was first
released. Compare all four control strategies in terms of the time it takes to accelerate the
motor from 0 to 5000 rpm. In addition, follow the instructions below to prove that your
control schemes are working.

Hints:
You can use a hysteresis controller as in HW10 or you can use controlled current
sources to speed up your simulation. However, if you are using controlled current
sources you will need to put a large resistor in parallel in order for the simulation to
function.
Since you are trying to accelerate as fast as possible, you dont need a torque
controller or speed controller just use the maximum inverter current as i
s
and set *
according to the control strategy.
It is not necessary to use field weakening for this problem.

Submit the following with your homework:

A. Your model file(s)
B. Unity power factor control: Submit a scope waveform of your phase currents and phase-
neutral voltages to verify that they are in phase and thus the motor is operating at unity power
factor. You will have to filter the phase voltages enough to remove the switching from the
inverter but not so much that it phase shifts your average (sinusoidal) voltages. A 1
st
order
low-pass filter with a corner frequency of 100 Hz is recommended.
C. Constant mutual flux linkage control: Calculate the mutual flux linkage in your model using
equation (1) on slide 2 of lecture 22. Show that it is equal to
af
.

Submit the following table with your homework:
Control Scheme Constant torque
angle
Unity power
factor

flux linkage
Optimal torque

Time from 0 to
5000 rpm (sec)
