Dear Dr. Crawford:
Enclosed are the Notice of Receipt of Applications and the
applications submitted by Sea World, Inc. (P2W and P2X}. Sea
World is applying for two public display permits under the
authority of the Marine Animal Protection Act. The first
application (P2W} requests to import one (1} male and two (2}
female killer whales (Orcinus orca}. They are requesting that
the male be imported as soon as possible. However, since one
female has given birth and Sea World believes the other is
pregnant and may give birth soon, it is requested that the calves
be imported with their mothers at 12 months of age and as
prescribed by the Sea World veterinary staff. These animals will
be imported from Sealand of the Pacific Ltd., 1327 Beach Drive,
Victoria, B.c. vas 2N4.
The second application (P2X} requests the importation of one male
captive-born killer whale from Marineland of Canada, Inc., 7657
Portage Road, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada L2E 6X8.
Please review the applications for consistency with the Animal
Welfare Act. I would appreciate any comments on these
applications within 30 days of receipt of this letter. If you
have any questions regarding these applications or require
additional information please contact Pat Bradley (713-2289}.
