The Problem of Production:
A New Theory of the Firm
Per L Bylund
The theory of the frm has been
fertile ground for economists for over
a century. Bylund proposes a new
theory, rooted in Austrian economics,
which examines the frm as a part of
the market, and not as a free-standing
entity. In this integrated view, a
theory is offered which incorporates
entrepreneurship, production, market
process and economic development.

Development and Financial
Reform in Emerging
Economies
Editors: Nicholas Perdikis and
Kobil Ruziev
Modern development strategy relies
heavily on uncompromising orthodox
economic theory and a dogmatic faith
in market effciency. In contrast, the
essays in this volume aim to emphasize
the importance of historic experiences
to evolve a more realistic and dynamic
view of how such development could
be formalized. The volume goes on to
evaluate fnancial reform in emerging
economies and the importance of
fnancial regulation in market-based
economies.

Philanthropy and the Funding
of the Church of England,
18561914
Sarah Flew
The changing relationship between
the church and its supporters is key
to understanding changing religious
and social attitudes in Victorian
Britain. Using the records of the
Anglican Churchs home-missionary
organizations, Flew charts the
decline in Christian philanthropy
and its connection to the growing
secularization of society. This is a
highly original contribution to two
of the most widely debated issues

The Renaissance Ethics of
Music: Singing, Contemplation and
Musica Humana
Hyun-Ah Kim
Modern scholarship has explored
music both scientifcally and
aesthetically, but not philosophically.
In early modern Europe, music
particularly singing was the arena
where body and soul came together,
embodied in the notion of musica
humana. Kim uses this concept to
examine the framework within which
music and song were used to promote
the moral and spiritual education of
the laity.

Calvinism, Reform and
the Absolutist State in
Elizabethan Ireland
Mark A Hutchinson
Despite the best efforts of the
English government, Elizabethan
Ireland remained resolutely Catholic.
Hutchinson examines this failure of
the Protestant Reformation. He argues
that the emerging political concept of
the absolutist state forms a crucial link
between English policy in Ireland and
the aims of the Calvinist reformers. In
doing so, Hutchinson places Ireland
within the wider context of English
political and religious reform and
European intellectual history.

Indulgences after Luther:
Pardons in Counter-Reformation France,
15201720
Elizabeth C Tingle
Indulgences have been synonymous
with corruption in the Catholic Church
ever since Martin Luther nailed
his ninety-fve theses to the church
door in Wittenberg in 1517. Despite
Luthers work towards reform and
the advent of the Protestant Church,
by 1700 the sale of indulgences was
still being widely practised all over
Europe. Tingle explores the nature
and evolution of indulgences in
the Counter Reformation and how
they were used as a powerful tool of
personal and institutional reform.

Worship, Civil War and
Community, 16381660
Chris R Langley
Based on extensive archival research,
Langleys study examines the
interaction between warfare and
religion in Civil War-era Scotland.
During this time the power of the
Kirk was extended from arbiter
of morality to enforcer of political
obedience, while some clergy also
chose to politicize their sermons.
The information gleaned from parish
records allows an insight into the
localized effects of war on religious
practice.

Insanity and the Lunatic
Asylum in the Nineteenth
Century
Editors: Thomas Knowles and

The nineteenth-century asylum was
the scene of both terrible abuses
and signifcant advancements in
treatment and care. The essays in this
collection look at the asylum from
the perspective of the place itself its
architecture, funding and purpose
and at the experience of those who
were sent there. Fictional as well as

Prostitution and Social
Control in Eighteenth-
Century Ports
Marion Pluskota
How prostitution is perceived in the
context of social control and urban
change is key to understanding the
evolving attitudes to gender and
sexuality in the eighteenth century.
In her comparative study, Pluskota
looks at how the role of prostitutes
in the ports of Bristol and Nantes is
redefned beyond that of the criminal
and placed within their families,
neighbourhoods and larger social
networks. Using police and judicial
records, she provides a valuable

British Masculinity and the
YMCA, 18441914
Geoff Spurr
In 1844 the YMCA was founded
in London by a group of drapers
assistants. From its roots as an
evangelical Christian brotherhood,
the organization evolved to provide
physical and educational pastimes and
opportunities to a large proportion
of lower-middle-class men. Blending
social, gender and religious histories,
Spurr argues that the YMCA became
key in defning masculinity for this
large social group and that in turn
they helped to dictate the development

The Rockefeller Foundation,
Public Health and
International Diplomacy,
19201945
Josep L Barona
In the years after the First World War,
living conditions in many European
countries were poor. The traditional
role of public health authorities in
controlling disease had to expand
to cover social issues such as diet
and sanitation. Barona examines
the Rockefeller Foundations role in
improving health. The Foundation
applied a model of business effciency
to its ideology of spreading good
health: defning problems, identifying
opportunities and aiming at achievable
goals. Its work alongside the League
of Nations Health Organization can be
seen as a revolution in public health
practices.

Victorian Literature and the
Physics of the Imponderable
Sarah C Alexander
This study examines the role of physics
in defning concepts in Victorian
literature and popular culture.
Physicists and writers formulated
new terms and ideas to overcome the
gaps in their knowledge, in an age that
was obsessed with the empirical. The
work of John Tyndall, George Henry
Lewes and Auguste Comte, among
others, are discussed and set in the
context of a developing modernity.
Important parallels with current issues
surrounding scientifc endeavour are
apparent, such as the Higgs boson or
God Particle.

Adolphe Quetelet, Social
Physics and the Average Men
of Science, 17961874
Kevin Donnelly
Adolphe Quetelet was an infuential
scientist whose work spanned many
disciplines. He is best remembered
for his controversial work on social
physics: the idea that behaviour can be
determined by statistical averages. But
this average man hypothesis is just
one facet of a long and distinguished
career. Donnelly presents a study of
Quetelets life and work, exploring his
contribution to quantitative reasoning
and his place in nineteenth-century
intellectual history.

Knowing Nature in Early
Modern Europe
Editor: David Beck
Today we are used to clear divisions
between science and the arts. But
early modern thinkers had no such
distinctions, with knowledge being a
truly interdisciplinary pursuit. Each
chapter of this collection presents a
case study from a different area of
knowledge, including the acceptance
of heliocentrism, Shakespeares use
of science and magic, and the use of
scripture to refute Descartes claims.

The New Man, Masculinity
and Marriage in the
Victorian Novel
Tara MacDonald
Though the term New Man was
not coined until 1894, this study
locates earlier examples throughout
the Victorian era. In the novels
of Charles Dickens, Anne Bront,
George Eliot and George Gissing,
characters are identifed who could
be classed as prototypes of the New
Man. By tracing the rise of the New
Man alongside novelistic changes
in the representations of marriage,
MacDonald shows how this fgure
encouraged Victorian writers to
reassess masculine behaviour and to
re-imagine the marriage-plot in light
of wider social changes.

Modernism, Middlebrow and
the Literary Canon: The Modern
Library Series, 19171955
Lise Jaillant
In the 1920s and 30s the Modern
Library Series brought out cheap
editions of modernist works. Books
by writers including H G Wells,
Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, were
published and marketed alongside
detective fction and other books that
we would now class as middlebrow.
Jaillant provides a thorough analysis
of the mix of highbrow and popular
literature in the Modern Library and
argues that the availability and low
cost of modernist works helped to
expand modernisms infuence as a
literary movement.

Irish Radical
Carol Baraniuk
James Orr (17701816) was the
foremost of the Ulster Weaver poets.
He wrote in both Scots and English
and has been favourably compared to
his near contemporary Robert Burns.
A radical and a lifelong supporter of

Reading Robert Burns:
Texts, Contexts, Transformations
Carol McGuirk
Robert Burns is Scotlands greatest
cultural icon. Yet, despite his
continued popularity, critical work has
been compromised by the myths that
have built up around him. McGuirk
focuses on Burnss poems and songs,
analysing his use of both vernacular
Scots and literary English to provide
a unique reading of his work. Well-
known and obscure texts are discussed
and set in the context of the time
they were written, and the infuence
of earlier and contemporary poets
is considered. The work will shed
new light on Burns as a writer whose
infuence is still keenly felt today.

Malvina: by Sophie Cottin
Editor: Marijn S Kaplan
Often linked to the works of early
Romanticism, Sophie Cottins Malvina
was a bestselling sentimental novel.
First published in France in 1800, the
1803 English translation by Elizabeth
Gunning (a prolifc novelist in her

to achieve success internationally.
Malvina explores the confict between
passionate love and substitute
motherly love. Cottin leads readers
far from the happy endings of writers
such as Riccoboni and much closer to
Rousseau. Interest in Cottins work
has increased steadily in recent years
and this is the frst modern scholarly

Intentionality and Myths of

Carl B Sachs
Intentionality is one of the central
problems of modern philosophy.
How can a thought, action or belief
be about something? Sachs draws on
the work of Wilfrid Sellars, C I Lewis
and Maurice Merleau-Ponty to build
a new theory of intentionality that

Richard Rorty, Liberalism
and Cosmopolitanism
David E McClean
Richard Rorty was one of the
most controversial and infuential
philosophers of the late twentieth
century. Known primarily for his
attacks on truth and the idea that
knowledge is a mirror of nature, his
contribution as a humanist and a great
moralist has been overlooked by recent
scholarship. McClean re-evaluates
Rortys work in the light of his liberal
cosmopolitan outlook, showing how it
can be applied to a range of social and
political issues, including international
terrorism, religious fundamentalism,
neo-liberalism, sexual politics and
business culture.

Wall Street, Reforming the
Unreformable:
An Ethical Perspective
David E McClean
The scandals of recent years have led
to a variety of reforms to fnancial
institutions. But without an industry-
wide commitment to something other
than pure proft, calls for a greater
emphasis on ethics will be largely
ignored. McClean argues that a
collective move towards stewardship is
necessary to restore ethical behaviour
and public confdence. Drawing on
practical examples and offering new
policy recommendations, this unique
philosophical study paints a picture of
what a truly ethical trading culture of
the future might look like.

Memoirs of the Court of
George III
General Editor: Michael Kassler
George III was one of the longest
reigning British monarchs, ruling
over most of the English-speaking
world from 1760 to 1820. Despite his
longevity, Georges reign was one of
turmoil. This edition presents four
frst-hand accounts which record
signifcant events, including the
American and French Revolutions and
the madness of George III.
Charlotte Papendieks memoirs cover
the frst thirty years of George IIIs
reign, while Mary Delanys letters
provide a vivid portrait of her years at
Windsor. Lucy Kennedy was another
long-serving member of court whose
previously unpublished diary provides
a great deal of new detail about the
Kings illness. Finally, the Queen
herself provides further insights in the
only two extant volumes of her diaries,
published here for the frst time.
All texts are rare, frst-hand accounts
from those close to George III

The Early English Caribbean,
15701700
Editors: Carla Gardina Pestana
and Sharon V Salinger
The West Indies has captured
the English imagination since the
beginning of the sixteenth century.
The Caribbean held both enormous
potential and serious danger. Pirates,
drawn by the possibility of riches,
operated in the region, disease and
disaster were rife and the Spanish
were prepared to defend their colonies
by force. In spite of such obstacles
Englands Caribbean colonies became
the most proftable of her New World
empire. Merchants and settlers
arrived and bought land, they set up
plantations, they traded in sugar and
slaves.

British Freemasonry,
17171813
General Editor: Rbert Pter
Freemasonry was a major
component of British cultural,
social and intellectual life during
the Enlightenment era. It was also a
successful British export, becoming
popular around the globe and evolving
into one of the social forces that bound
the countries of the Empire together.
In contrast to the secrecy that
surrounds the movement today, the
eighteenth-century press was able to
report on the feasts, processions and
concerts that were held and to even list
some of the members by name.
This primary resource collection
begins at the point when organized
freemasonry was established with

when the two rival Grand Lodges the
