Mass Destruction 4
Build and Master Ninja Weapons
John Austin
• Co-op available

instructions with diagrams to show stealth warriors how to build 37
different ninja weapons for the modern era. Each of the projects in
Mini Weapons of Mass Destruction 4 are built from common house-
hold and office items—plastic utensils, markers, clothespins, paper
clips, wire hangers, and discarded packaging—all clearly detailed on

guns, throwing darts, siege weapons, and ninja tools to choose from.
Once they’ve assembled their armory, the author provides novices
several targets to construct to practice their shooting skills. Armed,
trained, and shrouded in black, readers are now prepared for mis-
sions of reconnaissance, sabotage, and other grim errands.
John Austin is a professional toy designer and author of Mini

Excerpt:
Let’s rewind back to when my youngest daughter, Reiko (Ray-Coe), was three months old and my oldest daughter, Emiko (Emmy-
Coe), was almost three years old. During that time, I had the pleasure of taking four weeks of paid leave from my corporate job for
some daddy-daughter bonding with Reiko while my wife Mari went back to work and while Emiko went to school. During one of the
first few mornings that I was on leave, Mari was especially flustered prior to heading into work. She had to pump breast milk for
Reiko’s bottles; she was getting dressed and ready for a day at the office, and she was trying to wrangle Emiko to get her hair done for
school. While I was getting dressed, I could tell she was getting extremely frustrated by how the morning was going and she knew she
would be late for her first appointment.
That’s when I stepped in and said, “Just go to work, I’ll take care of Emiko’s hair.” Mari chuckled and quipped, “C’mon. You know
Reiko doesn’t like to be put down alone in the morning. She’s going to raise hell while you’re getting Emiko’s hair done. I’ll do it.”
After some back and forth, I finally convinced her that I’d take care of it. She left me with one final parting shot prior to closing the
front door: “I’ll believe it when I see it.”
At that point, I put Reiko in the Ergobaby carrier, placed Emiko on a stool in our bathroom, and I started the process of putting her
hair in a ponytail. Easy as pie.
Then I realized my wife was probably at work thinking I would buckle under the pressure and send Emiko to school looking like a
female version of Andy Samberg. I needed proof that I had everything under control. Within minutes, I found my camera, placed it on
a ten-second timer, and took a quick photo of the scene. Shortly thereafter, Emiko’s hair looked great, Reiko was calm, and I sent the
photo to Mari with a caption that simply read, “BOOM.” We both enjoyed a great laugh from it all and I figured that would be the
end of it.
After dropping Emiko off at school, I put Reiko down for her morning nap and thought my followers would get a kick out of the
photo, so I posted it on the Daddy Doin’ Work social media pages.
Little did I know what would happen next.

The new brew house and all the other scrounged gear was on its way,
and I selected a contractor to do the extensive concrete work. All my
ducks were in perfect little rows. Then, one week into tearing all the
existing concrete floors out of the seventeen-thousand-square-foot
building, I got a call from the contractor’s estimator saying that he
needed to increase his estimate by about 25 percent. I laughed out
loud at first, because my budget had already been set in a different
sort of concrete, and then I realized I was laughing alone. There was
a long silence on the phone, and he waited for me to restart the con-
versation. Taking the bait, I said, “Reeeealllly?” He told me that he’d
forgotten to include the labor. I took a deep breath, assumed a lotus
position, then a Drunken Eagle, inhaled white sage smoke, and
regained my composure with a flawless Pooping Crane while being
administered smelling salts. I leaned forward and repeated my earlier
question, to which he said, “Yes, reeeealllly.” There wasn’t much to
do; he was a good guy and probably in trouble with his boss. The
work had already begun, and, well, whatever.
That was the first of many cost overruns. Like being nibbled to death
by ducks, no one nibble hurt very much, but they added up. In the
words of my investor/landlord, “It’s like a monkey standing on the Sample interior image

Cold Sweat
My Father James Brown and Me
Yamma Brown with Robin Gaby Fisher
• Co-op available
• Advertising in Goldmine magazine
• Author tour to include Los Angeles and New York City
Being the child of a global superstar is never easy, but being the
daughter of the “Hardest Working Man in Show Business”—that’s a
category unto itself. Like every little girl, Yamma Brown wanted her
father’s attention, but fame, drugs, jail, and the complicated women
in James Brown’s life set the stage for an uncommon childhood. She
got caught in the same trap as her mother, doing things in her adult
life and troubled marriage that, as a child, she’d promised herself
she’d never do. The struggles she went through, both as a child and
as an adult, make for a gripping read and, in the end, a profound
examination of the nature of celebrity, violence, and survival.
Though packed with celebrity appearances ranging from Michael
Jackson to Al Sharpton, Cold Sweat ultimately focuses on an every-
day issue faced by millions of women—domestic violence—and in
this book Yamma faces it in an honest and powerfully moving way.
Yamma Brown is the vice president of the James Brown Family
Foundation and the president and founder of Daughter of Soul
Productions. She is the youngest daughter of Deidre Jenkins and
James Brown. She lives in Atlanta, Georgia. Robin Gaby Fisher is the
author of the New York Times bestseller After the Fire and Boys of
the Dark, a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Feature
Writing, and a member of a Pulitzer Prize–winning team.

CHICAGO REVIEW PRESS SEPTEMBER Dad looked at me lovingly as we waited for the ceremony
to begin. “It’s still not too late, Yamma,” he said. “You can
always back out, you know. I will take you away with me
and you won’t have to face anyone.” I took Dad’s com-
ments as a joke. I’ll never know if he meant them that way
or if he sensed that the situation wasn’t quite right and was
trying to give me an out. At that moment, I should have
bolted like Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride. The organ
started to play and I took my father’s arm for the walk
down the aisle. “No, Dad,” I said. “I’m ready.” He smiled
and nodded. “OK, baby girl. OK.”
It was a beautiful ceremony. I felt like the luckiest girl in
the world. My dad hadn’t disappointed me, and my sister
had come around. And, most important, my husband was
acting like the good Darren. I couldn’t have been more in
love that night.
Dad couldn’t stay long. Before he left for the airport, he
shook Darren’s hand. “Take care of my little girl,” he said.
Darren assured him that he would.
A month later, my new husband shoved me so hard I went
flying across our bedroom and slammed into the wall.

Actors live in a queer sort of double world. Not many of us have the names or identities we were born
with. I don’t associate Frances Gumm with me—she’s a girl I can read about the way other people do. I,
Judy Garland, was born when I was twelve years old.
When a studio puts you under contract, its publicity department starts turning out news copy about you
that you read with astonishment. You think, can this be me they’re talking about? There’s a whole body of
so-called “facts” floating around—almost like another you—that simply isn’t real. You can’t very well go
around denying the stories your studio releases when it is doing everything it can to make you a star, and
sometimes you get to doubting your actual personality.
When I was still a little girl, I found out people will believe anything about movie stars, often without any
evidence at all. You get used to it, of course, but it can still bother you a good deal. You begin to wonder
what kind of world you live in, and you begin to wonder sometimes what kind of person you really are.
Since childhood, I have always been on what I suppose would be called the “sensitive” side, and I can have
more than the average share of “nerves” on occasion. And I certainly have been bothered often with sleep-
lessness. At times I have been pretty much of a walking advertisement for sleeping pills.

Religious Fervor, Westward Expansion, and the
Presidential Election That Transformed the Nation
John Bicknell
• Co-op available
• Advertising in the New York Review of Books
The year 1844 saw a momentous presidential election, religious tur-
moil, westward expansion, and numerous other interwoven events
that profoundly affected the U.S. as a nation. Author and journalist
John Bicknell details these compelling events in this unusual history
book. He explains how the election of James K. Polk assured the
expansion that brought Texas, California, and Oregon into the
union. This took place amidst anti-Mormon and anti-Catholic vio-
lence, the belief in the immanent second coming of Christ, the mur-
der of Joseph Smith, Charles Goodyear’s patenting of vulcanized
rubber, the near-death of President John Tyler in a freak naval explo-
sion, and much more. All of these elements illustrate the competing
visions of the American future and how Polk’s victory cemented the
vision of a continental nation.
John Bicknell has written and edited for Congressional Quarterly,
FCW, and Roll Call, and was coeditor of the 2012 edition of Politics
in America, a 1,200-page guide to the U.S. Congress. He lives in

CHICAGO REVIEW PRESS NOVEMBER
Excerpt:
As the day wore on, guests began to move below decks to enjoy some of the treats Stockton had stashed aboard before
the ship left Philadelphia, including a selection of fine wines. Toasts were offered. Upshur offered one to the president,
who had joined the other guests for the late afternoon luncheon. Tyler in turn raised his glass to “the three great guns: the
Princeton, her commander, and the Peacemaker.” The guests applauded and Stockton appreciated the presidential nod.
But he felt his gun had done enough work, so when an officer told Stockton that one of the guests had requested another
firing, his response was “no more guns tonight.” Unfortunately for Stockton, the request had come not from just any
guest, but from the new navy secretary, Thomas Gilmer. . . .
History can change in an instant, affected by the smallest of contingencies. John C. Calhoun’s son, Patrick, had offered to
escort a young lady to a closer view of the firing, but she demurred, complaining that the report of the gun was “dis-
agreeable to her.” Upshur decided to go on deck to see the gun fired again. Tyler was headed in that direction, but
stopped below deck to listen to his son-in-law William Waller sing a patriotic song. As Waller sang the word
“Washington,” and with Calhoun’s son “only a few paces” away, a deafening blast was heard.
The ship shuddered as if it had been hit by enemy fire. “The scene upon the deck may more easily be imagined than
described,” the National Intelligencer put it delicately to its readers. A congressman aboard was more graphic, describing
the “ghastly countenances of the dead, the shattered limbs, the gashes in the wounded, the mournful moaning.” . . . David
Gardiner, father of the president’s soon-to-be fiancée, was dead. So was Tyler’s valet (a slave named Armistead), and Navy
Secretary Gilmer.

Silent Witnesses
The Often Gruesome but Always Fascinating
History of Forensic Science
Nigel McCrery
“It is a fascinating story, and makes for a thoroughly good read.”
—Guardian
“A convincing and readable history of a science defined by the simple
maxim: ‘Every contact leaves a trace.’” —Times
• Co-op available
• Advertising in Science News Magazine
Crime novelist and former police officer Nigel McCrery provides an
account of all the major areas of forensic science from around the
world over the past two centuries. The book weaves dramatic narra-
tive and scientific principles together in a way that allows readers to
figure out crimes along with the experts. Readers are introduced to
such fascinating figures as Dr. Edmond Locard, the “French Sherlock
Holmes”; Edward Heinrich, “Wizard of Berkeley,” who is credited
with having solved more than 2,000 crimes; and Alphonse Bertillon,
the French scientist whose guiding principle, “no two individuals
share the same characteristics,” became the core of criminal identifi-
cation. Landmark crime investigations examined in depth include a
notorious murder involving blood evidence and defended by F. Lee
Bailey, the seminal 1936 murder that demonstrated the usefulness of
the microscope in examining trace evidence, the 1849 murder of a
wealthy Boston businessman that demonstrated how difficult it is to
successfully dispose of a corpse, and many others.
Nigel McCrery was a police officer with a particular interest in forensic
science before he joined the BBC in 1990. There he was a researcher
on the award-winning Our Friends in the North and created various
series, including the popular Silent Witness, a crime/forensics drama
that also airs in the United States on BBC America’s “Mystery
Monday.” He has also written several crime novels, including Still
Waters and Tooth and Claw.

La Belle Créole
The Cuban Countess Who Captivated Havana,
Madrid, and Paris
Alina García-Lapuerta
• Co-op available
• Advertising in the New York Review of Books
The adventurous woman nicknamed La Belle Créole is brought to
life in this book through the full use of her memoirs, contemporary
accounts, and her intimate letters. The fascinating María de las
Mercedes Santa Cruz y Montalvo, also known as Mercedes, and later
the Comtesse Merlin, was a Cuban-born aristocrat who was years
ahead of her time as a writer, a socialite, a salon host, and a partici-
pant in the Cuban slavery debate. Raised in Cuba and shipped off to
live with her socialite mother in Spain at the age of 13, Mercedes tri-
umphed over the political chaos that blanketed Europe in the
Napoleonic days, by charming aristocrats from all sides with her
exotic beauty and singing voice. She married General Merlin in
Napoleon’s army and discussed painting with Francisco de Goya. In
Paris she hosted the city’s premier musical salon where Liszt, Rossini,
and great divas of the day performed for Rothschilds, Balzac, and
royalty. Celebrated as one of the greatest amateur sopranos of her
day, Mercedes also achieved fame as a writer. Her memoirs and travel
writings introduced European audiences to 19th-century Cuban soci-
ety and contributed to the debate over slavery. Mercedes has recently
been rediscovered as Cuba’s earliest female author and one who
deserves a place in the canon of Latin American literature.
Alina García-Lapuerta, a native Spanish speaker who has researched
this book for seven years, was born in Cuba. She is a graduate of
Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, where she received
a BS in international economics with a concentration in Latin

CHICAGO REVIEW PRESS SEPTEMBER because the climate, with its oven-hot sun, created a state of
“voluptuous apathy” in the general population—the con-
trast between this state and the energetic feasts and dancing
in the evenings was all the more striking. To Mercedes, this
constant dichotomy helped render Cuban women irre-
sistibly enchanting; a mix of vivaciousness and languidness.
She would deploy these very characteristics herself to charm
the Spanish court and the Parisian salons in later years. But
Mercedes was still very young, and even if her father
thought dances and parties were appropriate for a nine- or
ten-year-old girl, Mercedes herself preferred spending more
time with Mamita. “Seated at her feet, perched on her
knees, I listened with vivid interest to tales from the Old
Testament or Roman history and I experienced some
unknown sense of conviction that in preferring Mamita’s
company to a ball, I did well by God.”
Meriwether Lewis
The Assassination of an American Hero
and the Silver Mines of Mexico
Kira Gale
• Co-op available
This new full-length biography of Meriwether Lewis is presented
within the context of the turbulent times of the early American
Republic. The author discusses intrigues to seize the Floridas and
Louisiana from Spain with the help of France or Britain, and makes
the case for General James Wilkinson assassinating General Anthony
Wayne to become the commanding general of the U.S. Army. She
proposes that the deadlock in the presidential election of 1800
between Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson was caused by a British
faction of Federalists who planned to invade Louisiana and Mexico
if Burr were elected president. Three parts of the conspiracy are iden-
tified: a secret military base on the Ohio, Cantonment Wilkinsonville,
where 700 U.S. Army troops were stationed; the Philip Nolan fili-
buster into Texas; and British naval support. After Jefferson’s elec-
tion, Lewis lived in the White House as his confidential aide. In
1803, he left the White House as the leader of an elite army unit to
reinforce America’s claim to the Pacific Northwest. When he
returned, Jefferson appointed him governor of Louisiana Territory
based in St. Louis with orders to remove followers of Aaron Burr
from positions of power and influence. Within two years Meriwether
Lewis was dead at the age of 35, killed by an assassin’s bullets in
1809. The case is made that General Wilkinson and John Smith T., a
wealthy lead mine operator, were the organizers of his assassination.
Their motive was to prevent Lewis from stopping another filibuster
expedition into Mexico in 1810. This biography of Lewis offers a
very different interpretation of his character and achievements, sup-
porting the idea that, if he had lived, Lewis was in line to become

When history is viewed through the prism of biblical prophecy, the complexity of numerous variables is simplified.
The analyst is able to identify a single underlying issue, which provides a focal point for the many related themes and
details involved. At times, this conceptual clarity will aid the historian, enabling him to place his finger on the event
that truly decided the outcome. Conversely, the aspect of Divine intervention implied by prophesy may be a hindrance
to the historian, who wishes to extract human lessons from an essentially human narrative.
For the honest truth-seeker, however, who prefers genuine truths to hypotheses and conjectures, prophetic revelation—
when extracted expertly and honestly—should not be ignored. Seen through the appropriate prophecy, the events of
history are illuminated with a light of clarity. Although particular details may remain unclear on a human plane, they
become laden with meaning on the plane of Divine will and guidance.
The human lessons of history may not be ignored. Applied with sagacity and discretion, they can offer indispensable
counsel concerning the subtle craft of decision-making, and provide vital perspectives on such important issues as
human identity, the workings of politics and society, the forces of good and evil, and so on. Yet sometimes—perhaps
more often than not—the Divine lesson is more important even than the human one.

Excerpt:
This book has been quite difficult for me to write, perhaps because I had to overcome my resistance to acknowledging
that the problem of spouse abuse does indeed exist among Jews. We are no doubt influenced by early life experiences,
and I can remember nothing in my home other than a husband-wife relationship of mutual caring and utmost respect.
The thought that a husband can raise a hand against his wife was totally alien to me.
I was also subject to the widespread cultural belief that wife abuse simply does not exist among Jews, and that in the
non-Jewish population, daughters are told to try to get a Jewish husband because “Jewish husbands do not drink,
gamble, or beat their wives.” I remember in my childhood study of Torah learning that Hagar was an Egyptian
princess who could have married into royalty, but sought instead to become a member of the patriarch Abraham’s
household because of the serenity and blessing that prevailed therein.
As my psychiatric practice progressed and I began to specialize in the treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction, I
was surprised to find that the incidence of such problems among Jews was not negligible, and that cases occurred even
among traditionally observant families. I also noticed that because of the stigma associated with these problems,
Jewish families were most reluctant to seek help because it meant exposing the problem and possibly being stigma-
tized. But when I saw the tragedy and ruin that resulted from untreated cases of alcoholism and the harm that was
being inflicted on young lives because of failure to treat the problem among parents, I could not keep my silence.

Gabriel’s Daughters
A Novel
Janet Kay Jensen
“Gabriel’s Daughters is, at its core, three rounds in our culture’s
ongoing ‘nature vs. nurture’ boxing match. The daughters in ques-
tion—sisters Louisa, Zina, and Amy—are products of a polygamous
marriage and the fundamentalist Mormon community Gabriel’s
Landing. While the same challenges and conflicts confront the
daughters, each responds in a different way, following divergent
paths that take them far away from one another, yet, at the same
time, draw them closer together than ever. A well-crafted, cleverly
constructed web of interlocking stories, Gabriel’s Daughters offers
food for thought while it engages and entertains.”
—Rod Miller, author, The Assassination of Governor Boggs
“A masterful job at continuing the story of Joshua’s daughters, of
showing not just the evils of polygamy but how important family is,
even if it’s not an ideal family.” —Janet Peterson, author,
The Children’s Friends
“Even though I grew up in a community with lots of Mormons . . .
polygamists seem very exotic to me, and I can only imagine how
mysterious the whole culture must seem to people who didn’t grow
up in the West! There is still so much conflict in these books, even
though I love almost every character—I admire that. I found the
book consistently compelling and the ending very satisfying.”

A beautiful and haunting story of forbidden love, Consolations por-
trays a woman’s lifelong struggle to reconcile her all-too-human feel-
ings with her quest for the highest spiritual life. It is 1951 and young
Fiona Ingram is full of the fervor of a new convert. Following in the
footsteps of her inspiration, Thomas Merton, she abandons a promis-
ing academic career and enters Epiphany Monastery, ablaze with the
certainty that a life dedicated to seeking God alone is the great adven-
ture—and that it is meant for her. What she finds there is not what she
expects: Reverend Nathan Woods, a Jesuit and professor of theology
who comes to give the annual retreat. When their forbidden affair ends
abruptly, Fiona, now Sister Bridget, suffers a split in her soul. Under
the guidance of the compassionate abbess, she tries to “reclaim her
heart” and her lost fervor. She conforms outwardly as she rises in posi-
tions of authority and responsibility in the order, yet she continues to
struggle to understand and resolve her relationship with Nathan—all
the while carrying on a secret correspondence with him, until she is
forced—in a final encounter and spiritual crisis—to dive deep into the
still point of her soul and discover the truth.
Sally Wolfe is a marketing communications consultant for the holistic
health community. Her serious studies of Thomas Merton’s work led
her to visit Benedictine and Trappist monasteries across the United
States. She lives in Santa Cruz, California.

Excerpt:
“All clear,” he said, and stepped back in, gesturing with his arm to usher me out. I
saw he was eager for me to go.
I went and stood by his side. The fading glow fell across his face. I stepped forward
and let my forehead fall onto his chest. My veil brushed him. He didn’t move, just
stood there rooted, arms hanging loosely at his sides.
I breathed into his thin blue shirt and, looking down, I saw dark wiry hairs arcing
in a sea of curves along his forearms. His chest was warm, and I inhaled deeply the
smell of him, which was both delicate and sharp. I had no thought of moving. He
shifted his weight suddenly, and I felt his hands on my shoulders pushing me away,
not unkindly but in a firm manner.
“You have to leave—now.”
I looked at him. He had changed. His face was flushed, and his lips were pressed
together as if he were gripping something. The muscles on the sides of his neck
were taut, thickened like ropes. He glanced away, clearly distraught. Minutes before
he had been in easy, natural command of everything: himself, me, the cabin, and the
illegal circumstances. I had relied on him, and he had known exactly what to do,
how to soothe me, how to stay separate from me. Now I saw that he did not know.

but there never has been a retelling such as this. Witty dialogue and
unexpected twists and turns make this an enjoyable and engaging

Beast Charming tells the story of Beauty, who works as a temp at an
agency run by a high-tempered dragon. To avoid running into her
conniving and desperately-craving-for-nobility father—conveniently
named Noble—she takes on a peculiar job that will force her to con-
verse with a violent beast named, well, Beast. The rest of the story
develops into a hysterical tale of a classic fairy tale romance gone
modernly awry.

Excerpt:
Beauty held up the mangled gauntlet, ready to fight. She’d spent most of the afternoon yanking the thing out from
between a dragon’s teeth, and said dragon would probably approve of her using it to beat her father’s head in.
“Get. Out. Of. My. Way.”
“Not until you’ve returned to your senses and come back home.” Noble Tremain—whose birth certificate still iden-
tified him as Frank—folded his arms across his brocade-covered chest and tried to stare her down. Her father sin-
cerely believed himself to be an important and powerful man, even though he’d spent most of Beauty’s formative
years being kicked out of rich people’s houses. “This ridiculous job is an insult to the family name.”
Beauty shoved her shaggy brown hair out of her eyes with her free hand, glaring at the man who was technically
responsible for her existence. She’d told herself only a few months ago that she needed to move again, just in case
her father finally tracked her and Grace down, but she was sick of letting the man ruin her life. Besides, she could-
n’t leave her sister to face this alone.
“So sedating princesses and sneaking your daughters into secret ballrooms is what, creative parenting?” She gritted
her teeth to keep from shouting, furious he’d insisted on doing this where she worked. The only good thing about
all this was that he’d caught her before she’d made it inside. “Or how about that time you knocked us unconscious
and left us in an ogre’s cave, hoping a questing hero would just happen to rescue us?”
Her father’s brow lowered at the reminder of that last incident. “You could have tried to be a little more in peril
with that ogre,” he snapped, his round face tensing up with annoyance. Behind him, Beauty could see the front
doors open a little, giving whomever was on the other side a shield to continue listening behind. “I found you the
largest, most terrifying-looking creature in the region, and you and your sister come back looking like you’d been
out making a social call.”

That’s how she liked it. It was amusing to know the men who would attack her believed that they
were in control. They had no idea.
Feet scuffling interrupted her thoughts; Leisha knew she was not alone. The person nearby wasn’t
any ordinary human predator. This one actually posed a threat to her.
She didn’t bother to look around. This stalker wouldn’t be seen in the muggy night, not yet. She walked into a vacant parking lot
with plenty of space to maneuver if it came to a fight. Turning to face her pursuer, she reached behind her head and pulled her machete
from its spine sheath. There was a slight possibility she wouldn’t need to use it, but she couldn’t take any chances when an immortal
was near.
As the man entered the lot, she noticed brown hair and light skin. She suppressed the flutter of disappointment; it was not Tafari.
Six months had passed since she’d almost killed him in order to save his life. Maybe he was holding that against her since she had
not heard from him since.
It was the immortal, Sean. He stopped a few feet away from her with his sword already drawn.
“Hello, Sean,” Leisha said with pleasant sarcasm. “It’s been a long time. Care to explain why you decided to drop by so suddenly?”
He sneered. “There was nothin' sudden ‘bout it. I’ve been trackin' you down fer months,” he said in his Scottish brogue. “It took a
while ta find you, but I finally did. As fer my reason,” he smiled wickedly, “why, that would be good ol' fashioned revenge.” He pointed
his sword at her. “It’s your fault that ‘alf of our council was slaughtered, and Tafari just ain't himself no more. Because of you and tha'
twit of a girl, my world ‘as turned into a ‘ellish nightmare.” He crouched into a fighting stance. “And now, yer gonna pay!”

He was about to dismiss this as absurd and to accelerate when he became aware of something
real but inexplicable. On the grass verge, across which by his own account Stick had been rudely
pushed by a car, Carolus saw an object—or was it a creature? At all events the shape of a man

that attracted his attention. Was it a man or no more than an artfully arranged bundle of rags, a
sort of prone scarecrow? At all events nearby lying on its side was a motor-cycle.
Carolus felt sure, sitting there staring at these, that the two objects were not the result of an
accident. The man had not been thrown from the saddle of his motor-bike, the motor-bike was
not lying there after a crash. They were altogether too deliberately placed. It would be too much

had been the scene of a crash within ten days of the finding of Dutch Carver’s dead body.
Yet what in heaven’s name was the idea?

“Want me to call the police?” I said, pulling my cell phone out of my shirt pocket.
He grunted and spat on the ground near his feet. “No. I’ve been trying to tell you, Oakley. This’s
bigger than the little town of Northfield, and, besides, they come out here and it just ends up in
the paper and I look like a fool.” He swept a lean hand down his face, over his beard, and
heaved a sigh. “Lemme call Bill Grinder, he’s got a new wrecker. Tow this thing in and see if
anything can be done.”
I handed him the phone, and as I stepped back, a flicker of motion out in the forest caught the
corner of my eye. I looked hard, but could see nothing but trees. Maybe it was a deer, holding
still and now invisible in the underbrush.
After Smith finished his call, he handed the phone back to me and said, “You gonna take this
case now? You see what we’re up against?”
Both rear tires of the truck had blown, not explosively but with weary huffs, but they hadn’t
ignited, and the flames were dying down. I doubted that Smith could use the truck for anything
but scrap, but he hadn’t asked my opinion on that. I said, “Smith, I’m not even licensed in this
state,” I said.

Everything You Need to Know About
the Digital Currency Revolution
Jose Pagliery
• Co-op available
The digital currency founded by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009
challenges everything we’ve come to accept about money,
financial institutions, and even government. The currency is
anonymous and can be traded internationally—without the
fees, government regulation, and oversight by banks and gov-
ernment-backed securities. But Bitcoin is not without risk—
the currency’s value has fluctuated wildly since inception, and
$400 billion suddenly disappeared overnight with the fall of
Mt.Gox. Bitcoin: Everything You Need to Know About the
Digital Currency Revolution provides a detailed look at the
impact and future implications of digital currency.
CNNMoney.com’s Jose Pagliery details digital currency’s ori-
gins, how the system works, and how Bitcoin is used today.
The book also examines the economic impact of a digital,
global currency, including perspectives from free market pro-
ponents such as Ron Paul to federal regulators who defend the
need for central banks. Pagliery also explores the dark side of
Bitcoin, including interviews with the FBI and a Bitcoin entre-
preneur currently in federal prison. Bitcoin is essential reading
for anyone looking to understand a financial innovation that
will forever change how we think about money.
Jose Pagliery covers technology for CNNMoney.com. He has
covered the growth of Bitcoin, penning dozens of articles on
digital currency, and has written for the Atlanta Journal-
Constitution, the Daily Business Review, and the Miami
Herald. He lives in New York City.

Johnny Unitas is widely considered the finest quarterback ever to
play the game. Much has been written about his life, but for the first

phy honoring the life and times of his father is a must-read. It sheds
light on the character and convictions of the man who has lived on
in NFL history, both on and off the field, offering clues to what made
him the man and the player he was.

TRIUMPH BOOKS OCTOBER
Excerpt:
Dad was born on May 7, 1933, at the height of the Depression in Pittsburgh, a city that felt
the Depression every day. That day, President Franklin Roosevelt gave a fireside chat about the
banking crisis facing the American people. Money was tight. There were no easy answers, he
said. That would be a theme of my father’s life: money and what to do about it. Both his birth
and Roosevelt’s radio speech happened on a Sunday, another theme. It would be on Sunday
afternoons, at 2:00 pm, in Baltimore that Dad would rise to his greatest fame. His fame on the
football field would create the opportunities for money. But in May 1933, Dad was seemingly
light years from either money or fame.
Here are some important facts about my father’s childhood. He was quiet and grew up work-
ing class but not poor as has been made into myth. His “rags to riches” storyline is one most
biographers take. He was active in sports and loved them. He got shot by a stray bullet when
my Uncle Leonard was playing around with a gun in the backyard. He was expected home by
dinner, which his sister prepped and then his mother cooked shortly after she got home from

created activities and games to stay busy. His friends and neighborhood were his world.

Under Pressure
How Playing Football Almost Cost Me
Everything and Why I’d Do It All Again
Ray Lucas with David Seigerman
Foreword by Bill Parcells
• Co-op available
In Under Pressure, Ray Lucas provides fans with a timely, uncen-
sored look at pro football’s play-at-all-costs culture. Overcoming
questions about his size and skills as a quarterback, Lucas perse-
vered and went on to play seven seasons in the NFL. His profession-
al football career, however, came to a sudden end at age 30, when
a neck injury caused him to collapse on the sideline during training
camp. Instructed by NFL doctors that surgery wasn’t an option,
Lucas turned to painkillers for relief, but as his tolerance for medica-
tion escalated and his NFL insurance coverage expired, he began to
plan his suicide. Just days before he planned to take his life, Lucas
was put in touch with a group of doctors who agreed to perform
neck surgery free of charge. In this tell-all, Lucas shares how—in a
league without guaranteed contracts and careers that average just a
few seasons long—players in the training room are perceived to lack
the toughness necessary to succeed on the field. He discusses how
this prevailing attitude leads to widespread abuse of painkillers and
leaves many former players unable to lead a normal life once their
playing career ends while also sharing details on how he overcame
his drug addiction and turned his own life around.
Ray Lucas played seven seasons in the NFL as a quarterback and
special teams player for the New England Patriots, New York Jets,
Miami Dolphins, and Baltimore Ravens. He is an analyst covering
the Jets for SNY New York and a color analyst for the Rutgers
Football Network. He lives in Harrison, New Jersey. David

Excerpt:
On the very first play, Deion got right up on Michael Irvin, one of the few receivers in the league who
had enjoyed moderate success against him. Irvin ran 10 yards downfield and then made a hard cut to the
outside where he hauled in a perfectly thrown pass from Troy Aikman. The two hooked up on that play
for more than 10 years, and when run and thrown properly, they couldn’t be stopped.
Deion certainly didn’t stop it on this play, and Irvin proceeded to woof, slamming the ball down with a
spike and then giving his trademark first-down sign. The receivers were going crazy, yelling and screaming
that their boy, “The Playmaker,” had just worked over the guy who was supposed to be the savior on
defense. “Deion was hot,” Woodson recalled. “He walked over to the side, and when the next corner
came up—I think it was Alundis Brice—he told him to get off the field. Deion came over and said, ‘All of
ya’ll should go on the other side if you want any reps. I’m taking every one of these f---ing reps.’ And
that’s exactly what he did.”
Maybe that was his way of knocking off the rust, considering he had played baseball all summer and this
was his first practice. Or maybe that’s just how bad he wanted to prove the first ball to Irvin was a fluke.
The arrogance to send the rest of the defensive backs to the other side of the drill wasn’t too surprising.
That was Deion’s reputation long before he came to the Cowboys. But what transpired over the next 12
snaps was nothing short of incredible.
Deion did take every rep on the right side. And he didn’t give up another ball.

Paterno Legacy
Enduring Lessons from the Life
and Death of My Father
Jay Paterno
Foreword by Phil Knight
• Co-op available
This biography of Joe Paterno by his son Jay is an honest and touch-
ing look at the life and legacy of a beloved coaching legend. Jay
Paterno paints a full picture of his father’s life and career as well as
documenting that almost none of the horrific crimes that came to
light in 2012 took place at Penn State. Jay Paterno clear-headedly
confronts the events that happened with cool facts and with passion,
demonstrating that this was just one more case of an innocent man
convicted by the media for a crime in which he had no part. Noting
that the scandal itself was but a short moment in Joe Paterno’s life
and legacy, the book focuses on Paterno’s greatness as a father and
grandfather, his actions as a miraculous coach to his players, and his
skillful dealings with his assistant coaches. A memorial to one of the
greatest coaches in college football history, the book also reveals
insightful anecdotes from his son and coaching pupil.
Jay Paterno is the son of Joe Paterno and was on Penn State’s coach-
ing staff for 17 seasons, 12 of which he served as the quarterback
coach. He is a writer whose work has appeared in numerous publi-
cations, including the Centre Daily Times, the Penn Stater, and USA
Today. His columns for StateCollege.com have been cited by Sports
Illustrated and ESPN. He lives in State College, Pennsylvania. Phil
Knight is the cofounder and chairman of Nike, Inc. and one of
America’s most well-known entrepreneurs in the sporting world.
Nike is the official athletic supplier of Penn State football’s jerseys
and shoes. He lives in Beaverton, Oregon.

Despite Duke leading all the way, Carolina had gone after Battier hard in Dean Smith’s last
off-season of recruiting. Battier agreed to visit Chapel Hill in the fall of 1996 when his mother
called the UNC Basketball office to say she had not received the itinerary for the weekend.
Smith’s administrative assistant Linda Woods asked him about it as he was coming out of his
office. “You mean they do that now?” Smith said of sending out official visit schedules.
Unlike Smith had eagerly studied Vic Bubas’ recruiting habits 35 years earlier, he was not
watching what the competition was doing as closely anymore. He had his system and routines
that had worked so well for decades. Battier and his family had set down strict rules about
when coaches could telephone Shane, and Kentucky’s Rick Pitino killed his chances by calling
outside those designated hours from George Steinbrenner’s box during the 1996 World Series.
It was an attempt to impress Battier, but actually eliminated the Wildcats from his list.
Battier was a perfect fit for Duke, a scholar-athlete at Detroit Country Day (which also pro-
duced Chris Weber), and Smith was not above being frank with those recruits he sensed were
leaning elsewhere. On his official visit to the Battier home in Michigan, Smith bluntly asked
Shane to tell him whether he was coming because “if you’re not I need to go recruit another
player at your position.”

sizes, and colors and are made out of top-grain leather that is inherently strong and flexible. They feel great, smell good, and wear beau-

Pandora’s DNA
Tracing the Breast Cancer Genes Through History,
Science, and One Family Tree
Lizzie Stark
• Co-op available
• Advertising in Bust and Science News magazines
Would you cut out your healthy breasts and ovaries if you thought
it might save your life? That’s not a theoretical question for journal-
ist Lizzie Stark’s relatives, who grapple with the horrific legacy of
cancer built into the family DNA. A BRCA mutation has robbed
most of her female relatives of breasts, ovaries, peace of mind, or life
itself. In Pandora’s DNA, Stark uses her family’s experience to frame
a larger story about the so-called breast cancer genes, exploring the
morass of legal quandaries, scientific developments, medical break-
throughs, and ethical concerns that surround the BRCA mutations.
She tells of the troubling history of prophylactic surgery and the
storied origins of the boob job and until the Supreme Court over-
turned them in 2013, relates the landmark lawsuit against Myriad
Genetics, which held patents on the BRCA genes every human car-
ries in their body. Although a genetic test for cancer risk may sound
like the height of scientific development, the treatment remains
crude and barbaric. Through her own experience, Stark shows what
it’s like to live in a brave new world where gazing into a crystal ball
of genetics has many unintended consequences.
Lizzie Stark is the author of Leaving Mundania and a freelance
journalist who has written for Wired, Io9.com, The Today Show
website, Psychology Today, the Daily Beast and the Philadelphia
Inquirer. She holds an MS in new media journalism from the
Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She founded

Excerpt:
Before their blood travels to technicians at Myriad Genetics—the lab that has somehow
managed to patent a piece of the human genetic code—they might imagine the BRCA
test as a delicate, sensitive tool, surely one of the apogees of modern scientific develop-
ment. But positive results, once returned, sealed with their drops of blood, offer women
a Faustian decision about whether to risk their lives or sacrifice their breasts and ovaries
in the service of continued health. If the test represents the culmination of centuries of
research, then the treatments—live with fear of cancer and practice constant vigilance or
cut out internal organs—are crude and barbaric.
The ability to test human DNA for susceptibility to disease is miraculous, but it opens
up a whole host of quandaries. Does it really benefit us to know what diseases lurk in
our DNA? Is it OK to patent a human gene? Can we charge people with genetic cancer
risk more for health insurance? Is it ethical or rational to remove healthy body parts? To
engineer babies without these predispositions? The shining hope in the bottom of the
box is, of course, the ability to out-sneak diseases like cancer, increasing our overall
healthiness and lifespan. BRCA patients and researchers are not the first ones to face
these decisions, and they won’t be the last, either.
