Soccer: Poetry Made with Feet



Part I. Overview of contextual factors and the topic
1. Provide a description of the topic
The fourth topic of Poetry Made With Feet is called The New Players of Color Psychology. This
field of study considers the implications of color in human perception, it provides to each color
the representation of a feeling or mood. Red represents love, blue has a visual relation with
peace and eternity, or green symbolizes nature, for instance. In this topic students have the
opportunity of developing skills to identificate psychology of color theory and based that, be able
to provide a meaning to the different T-shirt of soccer teams according to their colors.

This topic also gives the chance to the students to integrate Colorsplash app to change the
color of some soccer T-shirts and according to the results determine what kind of perception
changes have occurred in the representation of each soccer team.

2. Context
Each soccer team has developed along the years some characteristics that differentiate it from
others, it includes a home stadium, a mascot, a badge, and undoubtedly, a T-shirt. This piece of
clothes possesses an emblematic color that in case of national soccer teams corresponds to
national flag colors. But through the years, teams and fans have gave different meanings to this
color or colors in their T-shirts.

3. Learners
The targeted learner will be 10th. grade students from 15 to 17 years from Colegio Mara
Mercedes Carranza in Bogot, Colombia.

Part II. Design Components
1. Learning goals
Upon completion of this learning unit, students are expected to reach the following goals:
! Students will be able to conceptualize the main aspects about color psychology theory.
! Students will exemplify color psychology with contextual elements found in advertising,
movies and pictures.
! Students will reflect upon the importance of using different colors for representing a
soccer team, a political party, a new product, etc.
! Students will increase awareness about their environment, considering the uses of color
around them.
! Students will be able to handle a mobile learning app to develop a knowledge and aply it
in a real context.


2. Activity

! Introduction: (5 minutes)
Students will be asked to remember different T-shirt soccer teams colors, both clubs and
national teams. The teacher will write the relations on the board. Then, he will ask why
national teams such as Brazil or Mexico used those kind of colors in their uniform, after
the univocal answer, then, the teacher will ask why some soccer clubs like Bayern
Munich, Manchester United or Inter de Milan use that kind of colors in their uniforms.
This question may guide the students to create some hypothesis as answers. The
teacher will take some of those opinions to present the color psychology theory.

! Presentation
The teacher will present the main aspects of this theory, a brief historical introduction
and some examples from painting.

! Activity 1
The students will be asked to hypothesize about some advertisements the teacher found
in magazines and presents in a Powerpoint presentation. This exercise could promote a
debate between students that the teacher would guide to the major topic.

! Activity 2
In this moment, the teacher will take the answers from the former activities and use them
on the T-shirt soccer field. Through color psychology theory the course will explain the
possible reasons of the use of a specific color in T-shirt teams.






! Activity 3
Working by couples, students will make a research workshop. Each couple will look
pieces of information on the Internet about a different soccer team and answer the
following questions:
1. Which are the emblematic colors of your soccer team?
2. Has the team always used the same colors in its uniform? If it doesnt, describe
the former color combination?
3. What is the color combination of the visitor uniform of your team?
4. According to color psychology theory establish an interpretation for both the
home and visitor uniforms -and previous color combination in case- of your team.

! Activity 4
Work couples will be asked to take down a list of attributes of an ideal team. They will
take into account values, physical and psychological skills, team-work abilities, spiritual
paths, etc. Then, they will have to connect that list to a specific set of colors according to
color psychology theory.

! Activity 5
Couples of students will use the Colorsplash app for the first time in the course. With a
help from a YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xwehbr3MRyQ)
students will identify the main characteristics of this product.

! Activity 6
Work couples will receive some pictures of the T-shirts of their corresponding soccer
teams. They will be in charge of changing the color of their T-shirt using Colorsplash
according to the list of attributes around color psychology theory they made.

! Activity 7
Work couples will present their artistic interventions to the rest of the class. They will
connect the different characteristics with the new T-shirt colors. After, the rest of the
students will share their comments for creating a reflection debate as the end of the
unity.


Description of the app

ColorSplash is an app that is designed by Pocket Pixels Inc. Its aim is to stimulate kids
creativity through picking colors to add color to a black-and-white photo with finger-
tapping. The newest version of the app is 2.0.2 that is updated on Oct. 23rd, 2013. It
requires iOS 5.0 or later and compatible with iPad/iPhone/iPod.

Colorsplash is an app that allows students to access with sessions and upload images from
their cell phones.











When students have chose the picture, Colorsplash offers the chance to keep it in black and
white tones or turn it in colors.





If students select black and white option, they can scratch on it and applying the color in the
area they define.















Finally, when students have finished their piece of art, the can save the image, save the session
and work on it again later.
