H
ome is where your heart is. My heart will always be in the seminary for it has
been my home for quite some time. It is a place where we build something
which did not matter to me before - Brotherhood.
St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary was once a strange place for us seminarians. But as
time went by, what was once a strange place is now our home. The strangeness of
this place was quelled when we allowed ourselves to be open to one another. It was
like an experience of being alone turning to an experience of being together. It was
brotherhood that made this place our home.
Back then in our starting years, it was a great period of adjustment. The feeling
was like being far away from home. Far-off from our family, close friends and familiar
people, we had to do things on our own. Then we met one another as strangers, persons
from different places and upbringing, but we were just the same, in search of home,
and so we became brothers. What started to build this place as our home is our care
and concern for one another which bonded us together.
From the start of the day up to the end of the night, our brotherhood is celebrated.
Whenever lessons are difficult, we help those in need and oftentimes do group studies
so that none of our brothers will be left behind. When we are occupied by difficulties,
someone would crack up a joke just to start the fun and somehow turn on our tired
bodies to generate more energy. We hold one anothers hands no matter what the
circumstances are, because we are brothers. Our relationship with each other is like
that of a family. We are each others keeper. No one tackles a problem alone.
There has to be someone who will always help. Every time one commits a mistake,
we do fraternal correction. This is for the good of our fellow brothers so that he may
realize his wrong doing, learn from it and eventually become a better person. We care
for the betterment of one another, just like what an elder
brother would always do to his younger brother.
Our brotherhood will not just be left in
the seminary, but will stay in our hearts.
Whether, we become priests or not later on
our brotherhood will always be significant.
Nothing will make you feel more at home
than the people who are always
there for youyour
brothers.

ANG PAGPANAKSI KAG PAGTAHOD SA KAMATUORAN

ng Katesismo sang aton Simbahan,
ilabi na gid sa pagtudlo sini
sa mga kabataan, simple nga
nagatumod sa Ikawalo nga Sugo sang
Dios sa sining mga tinaga: Indi ka
Magbutig. Tungod sini, may peligro nga
ang kabug-osan sang kaundan sang sini
nga sugo indi makalambot sa matuod-
tuod nga paghangup sang mga tumuluo.
Kinahanglanon ang isa ka mas madalom
nga pagpaathag sini agud maintiendihan
kon ano gid ang ginapatuman sang sini
nga sugo.
Ang balasihan sang Ikawalo nga Sugo
yara napahayag sa Libro sang Exodo kag
Libro sang Deuteronomio sang Daan
nga Kasugtanan sa sini nga dinalan:
Indi ka magpanaksi sang indi matuod
batuk sa imo isigkatawo. Kon sa aton pa,
ang kamatuoran kag ang pagpanaksi
sa kamatuoran may kaangtanan sa
isigkatawo kag indi isa lamang ka pribado
kag personal nga bagay. Ang kamatuoran
naangot sa kalidad sang pagpakigbagay
kag pagginawi nga nasandig sa Dios nga
Amay, ang ginahalinan sang tanan nga
Kamatuoran, kag ginpahayag sing bug-os
sa iya Anak nga si Jesukristo (cf. Jn. 1:14),
nga amo ang Kamatuoran (cf. Jn. 14:16),
nga ginpadala agod kita mangin hilway (cf.
Jn. 8:32), kag nagapadala sang iya Espiritu
sang Kamatuoran nga nagikan sa Amay (cf.
Jn. 15:26).
Sa Daan nga Kasugtanan, madamo sing

ast year, I attended a scuoletta (short
school) of the Focolare Spirituality
in Tagaytay. That gathering was so
enriching because the priests in attendance
came not only from the Philippines but also
from other countries in Asia. In one of the
sharings wherein we talked about priestly
vocations, I learned that there are a lot of
vocations in India. Many young men enter
the seminary in order to become a priest.
Out of curiosity, I asked why. One of
the priests told me that in some parts of
India, especially in the rural areas, families
are still very traditional. It is part of their
practice to go to Church as a family every
Sunday, gather at 6 oclock in the evening
to pray the Angelus and eventually to pray
the Holy Rosary before they sleep at night.
Reflecting upon this, I believe that
the primordial seedbed of vocation to the
priesthood and religious is the family. The
parents, whom St. John Paul II considered
as the first catechists, play a great role

Israelinhon kay ini amo ang kabuhi sang
kasugtanan sa tunga sang Dios kag sang Iya
banwa nga pinili.
Sa Bag-o nga Kasugtanan, si Kristo
nagsiling, Tungod sini, nagkari ako sa
kalibutan, sa pagpanaksi nahanungod
sa kamatuoran. Ang bisan sin-o nga
nagapamati sa kamatuoran, nagapamati
sa akon tingog (Jn. 18:37). Subong man,
isa Sia ka tawo sang kamatuoran. Wala Sia
nagpakunokuno, sa baylo nagasiling Sia
sing matuod sa tanan nga pagpakigbagay
Niya sa mga tawo kag pati man sa Iya
mga apostoles. Sa Iya pagpakig-angot sa
mga tawo, mataas man ukon manubo ang
kahimtangan sini, nangin tampad Sia sa ila
sa tanan nga bagay.
Si Jesus nagsiling nga ang kamatuoran
may gahum sa paghilway. Kon nagakabuhi
kamo suno sa akon ginatudlo sa inyo, kamo
mangin akon gintuton-an; makilala ninyo
ang kamatuoran kag ang kamatuoran
magahilway sa inyo (Jn. 8:12, 31b-32). Sa
Iya pagpakamalaut sang mga Pariseo, Iya
ginasiling sing maathag nga ina tungod kay
lain man ang ila ginahambal kag lain man
ang ila ginahimo.
Ining gahum sang kamatuoran sa
paghilway nagapabakod pa gid sang
importansya sa pagpangita sa kamatuoran
kag nagapakita sang Iya pangkatilingban
nga dimensyon. Ang dignidad sang tagsa
tagsa ka lalaki kag babayi dira napasad sa
ila kinamatarong sa kamatuoran. Sila may
duna nga obligasyon kag kinamatarong
sa pagpangita sang kamatuoran, kag kon
maangkon na nila ang kamatuoran, may
katungdanan sila sa pagkabuhi suno sa
ginapaabot sa ila sang kamatuoran.
Labaw sa tanan, bilang Kristiano,
ginatawag kita sa pagpanaksi sa kamatuoran
pareho sang mga martires sadtong una nga
mga panahon. Kag bilang mga Pilipino nga
Kristiano, ginatawag kita sa pagsunod kay
Kristo sa pagpakigbagay sa isa kag isa sing
may katampad kag sa kamatuoran. Dapat
kita magpakig-angot sa isa kag isa nga wala
sing pakunokuno kag wala sing paglimbong,
kundi sa isa ka paagi nga matuga sa tunga
naton ang pagsalig, ang paghiusa kag ang
paghinirupay nga amo ang tanda sang isa
ka mabakod nga komunidad.

Family - Seedbed of Vocation
Fr. Nathaniel G. Gentizon
in nurturing and nourishing the seeds of
vocation planted by God in each mans
heart. Prior to vocation to priesthood and
religious life, the family must contribute to
the sanctification of its members. Not all of
us are called to the priesthood and religious
life but all of us are called to be holy. How
do our families respond to this mission?
Sadly, it is common that some
couples getting married are not really
knowledgeable about our Faith. I have even
encountered some who do not know the
basic prayers such as the Our Father, Hail
Mary and Glory Be. What will happen later
on to their children? Isnt it that we cannot
give what we do not have?
If I have to review my life, it is in my
family that I have learned piety. Through the
example of my grandparents and parents, I
have learned to be prayerful and to serve in
our parish Church. Through this experience,
I was inspired to enter the seminary to
become a priest.
Family - the seedbed of vocation! This
is where the child knows not only the ABCs
and the 123s but also the Sign of the Cross,
the Hail Mary, and most especially the heart
to call God, our Father.
May our Jareo families be fertile
grounds for the vocation to the priesthood
and religious life to grow and bear fruit!

Project is on its initial stage. For
the meantime, we are now in its
demolition stage especially on the parts
of the Convent where we plan to build an
extension. Other parts will be retained and
retrofitted.
Now, we are happy to give you the

is seen both as a symbol and a fact of the
extraordinarypresenceof theparishpriest and
his assistant priests in the parish. And yet we
knowfor a fact also, that this is not just where
thepriestsresideorwheretheir presenceisfelt
and can be readily looked for when we need
them.
Whenwelookedintoour experiencesintheold
convent, wewereinawayaskingwhat it meant
forus, andperhaps, howit hasaffectedourlives
today. Andthis is what we foundout:
More than just a residence for priests our
kombento was the center of our continuing
educationinthefaithandspiritual formationas
parishioners. It was a venue for meetings and
get-togethersof thereligiousorganizationsand
ministriesof theparish. It wasthecenterwhere
ourremembrancesarekept, whererecordsand
files from our most distant ancestors down to
the present day were secured. It was also the
placewhere everyCandle Light was borninall
these22years; whereourschool andbarangay
catechistspreparedandwereprepared; where
parish pastoral workers were assembled and
recharged for their volunteer work in our
barangaysandMKKs; whereindigentsget alittle
hope; wherethesickwhocouldnot affordwere
cared for free; where the burdened sought
counsel; where our parish scholars saw a
brighter future; where married love was
deepened; where the young got their first
experienceof belongingtoagreater family- the
parish; wheremmany vocations to the
priesthoodandthereligiouslifewerebornand
nourished.
We were all part of that kombento!
The place may not have much in terms of
conveniencesandrichfurnishingsbut I amsure
that it has enrichedus deeplyinsomanyways.
Wehavedoneour best torepair what wecould,
tosufferwhat wecould, sothat it couldstill serve
usalittlelonger, andstill alittlelongereachtime.
But as Engineer Nilo Jardeleza told us in one
meeting, Father, I amsorrytotell youthat the
Jaro convent is no longer standing on sturdy
pillarsorhangingontoughbeams. It isstanding
andhangingonfaith aloneandit isamiracle
that it has not yet collapsed.
Sothere it is. Now, it has togo.
And this is where we all come in.

COFRADIAS INVITATION
On September 7, 2014, there will be a
monthly assembly meeting at 9:00 am to be
held at La Isabelita hall. School and barangay
volunteer catechists, education sub-ministries
representatives and junior catechists are

The Cofradia invites members of religious
organizations and parish ministries to join this
Marian Association. Formation sessions will

recent celebration of the
foundation anniversary of
Iloilos tri-media apostolate
highlighted the call to restore family
prayer and devotion in Christian
homes as the nation prepares to
welcome Pope Francis.
In an address by the Program
Director of the Katesismo sa
Kahanginan Apostolate (KSKA), on
the occasion of its 18th foundation
anniversary on August 22, Fr.
Elmo Cary Montao re-echoed the
Philippine Bishops invitation to
prepare to see the Pope by reviving
personal and family prayer.
Montao shared with KSKA
covenant partners, media practitioners,
and members of lay organizations, notably
the Daughters of Mary Immaculate, his
reaction to a talk on Prayer given earlier by
guest speaker Fr. Dan Fauste, OCD, various
lessons from his seminary and years of
priestly ministry on the primacy of prayer
if both priests and lay faithful are to be salt
and light to society.
The priest recalled that inhis seminary
they were told: If you dont know how to
drive, you can still be a priest. If you dont

just a few months ahead of Pope
Francis scheduled Philippine
invasion next year, a group of young
online missionaries inspired by the papal
visit theme Mercy and Compassion, is set
to hold the Catholic Social Media Summit
version 3.0 (CSMS v3.0) on September 13
14, 2014 in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

Filipinos to prepare for the Holy Fathers
visit is to reach out to people who are
easily overlooked or forgotten even by so-
called good Catholics through authentic
encounters, something which the event
aims to promote.

Well and good, but oftenpeople dont even
know what theyre really talking about,
she shared, explaining that Catholics need
to go offline and encounter people in the
real world.
According to Jhonsen Sales, CSMS
v3.0 workshop head, seven workshops
designed to transform armchair faith
warriors into advocates of mercy and
compassion will be part of the event.
These advocacies will touch onhuman
trafficking, dealing with members of the
LGBT community, Marian consecration,
the social costs of being an Overseas

Apostolate was started by Msgr. Jose
Pepe Buenaflor who pioneered the
use of the mass media in the service
of evangelization.
Msgr. Buenaflor founded a tri-media
apostolate in Iloilo with the daily radio
program Katesismo sa Kahanginan in
1997, a newsletter Ang Katekista in
1998 and a cable television program,
Manugsab-og in 1999.

Urging authentic encounters, Delacruz,
who is also the secretary of YouthPinoy, explained
Catholics need to use the New Media to bring the
advocacies of the Church to more people, especially
those who may be baptized Christians, but have for

The CSMSv3 advocacies, Sales explained, are
rooted in the Seven Spiritual Works of Mercy as
taught by the Catholic Church, and are oriented
towards the soul.
Just as the Corporal Works of Mercy are
directed towards relieving corporeal suffering, the
even more important aim of the Spiritual Works of
Mercy is to relieve spiritual suffering, he said.
Paragraph 2447 of Catechism of the Catholic
Church (CCC 2447) reads: The works of mercy are
charitable actions by which we come to the aid of
our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities.
Instructing, advising, consoling, comforting are
spiritual works of mercy, as are forgiving and
bearing wrongs patiently.
The CSMS v3.0 will be held at the Pangasinan
Training and Development Center. Registration is
P800, inclusive of a kit, ID, and meals. A registration
of P1,200 per head will include accommodations.

ccording to the speech of Mayor
Jed Patrick Mabilog of Iloilo City
last July 25 during the 77th Charter
Day Celebration, Iloilo Citys progress in
terms of our socio-economic activity, is
phenomenal.
This was published in Panay News
issue of July 26.
On the television screen, Governor
Arthur Defensor, also announced happily
Iloilo Citys progress in cooperation and
unity.
What a blessing to us, Ilonggos.
From the government, to the educational
institutions, and especially in religious
functions from the Church to apostolic
activities, something wonderful is taking
place in Iloilo.
We cannot deny the fact that there
are still undelectable interruptions,
but, because of community solidarity,
time will come when we will have total
transformation and experience progress in
its true form.
From the rural areas to the city
proper, Ilonggos are trying their best to

ts 4:20 in the afternoon. The soothing
breeze of the wind blows the grass
fragments in the field while sunlight
streams fromthe glass planes of our windows.
At the sound of the bell, seminarians rush out
of the dormitory and run to the shoe lockers.
Feet are now covered with socks while studs
and other sports shoes are out of the locker.
Its Recreation time!-the most awaited time
of the day. Who would not look forward to
Recre time? Not a single seminarian. After
all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
After a long day of scheduled prayer
time and the demands of academic life,
now is the time to play our favorite sports.
We can play Basketball, Volleyball, Table
Tennis, and of course, the seminarys official
sports- Football. In the field, seminarians in
their jerseys or other sports attire are busy
exchanging football kicks, basketball shots,
running to and fro, enjoying every moment
of it. We do not mind losing or winning the
game nor the tiny bruises and scratches and

hat is one of the essential habits
a seminarian must possess
wherever he goes, in facing
challenges, in everything that he does, and in
all his endeavors? This has been a riddle that
seminarians would ask their friends. If you
can make a guess, what will your answer be?
Saint Vincent Ferrer Seminary trains
seminarians to become disciplined citizens.
Emphasis is given to prayer time. Prayer is
an essential part of every day life. Praying
well makes prayer life fruitful. Seminarians
are given time to pray, a routine for them
before and after sleeping, before eating, and
before starting class everyday. From the first
thing in the morning to the last thing at night,
seminarians pray.
recover from want of food, of funds, of
household needs, of medical care, and of
lawful recreation. However, because of
that fervent desire to make the skies of
tomorrow brighter, we are doing our best
to make all ends meet and create a model
community.
There are hard times when finances
are difficult to meet, and now, we, Ilonggos,
are put to a test. The convent of Jaro
needs to be repaired and some parts of
the building need to be removed. The
convent must be repaired now, otherwise,
the clergy will have no place to stay; the
conference rooms and the parish offices
have to function at Pius XII Institute which
is not the right place for them. The Parish is
appealing to us to help rebuild the edifice
by giving a part of what we have in the
form of cash. Some of our Church officials
have gone to other countries where they
have relatives and friends and asked for
monetary help. Let us join hands in prayer
and ask the Lord to help the procurators
financially and guide them where to go.
Our Lady of Candles, the Patroness
the little pain we experience in our games.
What is important is we enjoy it a feeling
that inspires, energizes and sustains us until
our study period.
However when we are not in the mood
to play, there are still many worthwhile things
to do. We can be at the telephone booth to
make calls to our family and friends, be at the
canteen to have some snacks or at the library
to read a variety of books. These complete
our day, though.
Recre time is like an icing on the cake
for all seminarians. It is one thing that makes
life in the seminary more fun and exciting.
As one seminarian said Missing one period
of Recre is like missing a portion of your
day. A day will never be complete without
it because each Recre time is a unique
experience worthy to be treasured and to be
looked forward to.
As Archbishop Angel had once said, Pray
well, study well and most of all, play well!
of Jaro is looking upon us with love and
compassion and I am sure that she is
listening to our problems, and is also
helping us. Alone, we cannot succeed, but
with her help, we can.
We too, can help by giving what we
can afford materially, and also, by asking
our friends to donate something from what
they can share. What the church needs are
heartfelt donations, coupled with prayers.
Let us pray for philanthropists who
can give big cash gifts without hurting their
pockets. I know that if we kneel and raise
our hands and eyes to Heaven, and pray
to God for the convent to be finished soon
because He sees, He hears, He listens, and
as He looks at us, He touches the hearts of
His children who will not hesitate to help.
May the coming Church celebrations
find our convent gaining ground in the
process of repair may generous and
prayerful hearts build an edifice that will
stand the test of time and prove the fidelity,
the cooperation, the brotherhood, and
piety of the Ilonggos. Mother Mary, take the
hands and hearts of your children and raise
them to God!

I just cannot avoid the feeling of
sadness and pity while looking at the
convent in pictures weeks ago; much
more when I saw the whole area at the
back, so different from what I think a
convent should be. I also never expected
the building to be as it is now, urgently
needing of repair. And to think that our
priests who were doing so much for the
church and the parish have been living
there all these years when the condition
and the facilities were just not enough
to provide convenience and comfort,
especially for aged ones.
So then, now is the time for us to all
do what we can to help build our convent
and parochial house. Let us continue
what we had been doinghelping and
supporting whatever project there is, the
best way we can. I hope and pray for the
awakening of the so many benevolent
hearts still out there, far and near. The
Parish needs you!

Prayer can be done anywhere. It is
true. However it will always be a different
experience when done in a place where one
can be at peace and feel a total atmosphere
of devotion. This differentiates the seminary
from other schools-the emphasis on prayer
time. I can truly say that prayer is well-
experienced here inside.
The Seminary has been proud to teach
seminarians how to pray properly and well.
The Seminarys teachings and training have
madeagreat changeontheseminarians future,
whether as a priest, a lay person or a civilian.
Figuring out with a seminarians life, they
would simply say: The answer is prayer! Why
prayer? Because prayer for a seminarian is
never a waste of time but a time well-invested.

ry to imagine its 1:30 in the morning.
Almost everybody is fast asleep on
their beds. All the lights in the dormare
off and theres not a person moving around
inside. But youre not in the dorm. The lights
in the chapel are all on. A handful of people,
probably 12 to 20, move around, carrying
different items used in liturgical rites,
carefully watching every movement they
make. And youre just there sitting onthe pew,
waiting for your time to once more carry the
processional cross for a good 3 minutes. This
is just another practice time for the Pontifical
Servers of St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary.
Pontifical Servers practices may last
from evening to early morning. And you
may wonder, how can the person carrying
the processional Cross stand, staying up for
hours just to practice something that will only
last 3 minutes? Howcan anyone stand staying
up for so long just to serve someone else?
Pontifical Servers dont ask these questions.
They know that to serve in the Mass is to
serve God.
The Pontifical Servers have been in the
seminary for as long as anyone canremember.
Its been a tradition to invest in a new group
of chosen seminarians each year. But what
makes this group so special? Is it the special
sotana they wear, the food that comes with
the position, or the rare perks? No, service is
the highest thing in mind for anyone wishing
to become a Pontifical Server.
The Pontifical Servers are a disciplined
group. They are always ready for practice
and they dont mind the time it takes. This
is probably why they are the people usually
called on to serve in High Masses and other
very special occasions. They each hold this
love for service and this is what makes some
of themsome of the best servers in Iloilo.

Theyre the creamof the crop when it comes to
serving. Even now, our grade 7 seminarians are
being trained to fill in this great responsibility.
The Seminary awaits the next investiture on
Sept. 7, 2014. They will be the new bearers of
