ABSTRACT
Sound environment reproduction of various ight conditions in aircraft mock-ups is a valuable tool for the
study, prediction, demonstration and jury testing of interior aircraft sound quality. To provide a faithful
reproduced sound environment, time, frequency and spatial characteristics should be preserved. Physical
sound eld reproduction approaches for spatial sound reproduction are mandatory to immerse the listener
body in the proper sound eld so that localization cues are recreated. For sound eld reproduction inside
cabin mock-up, our approach relies on multichannel equalization using least-mean-square formulation. In this
paper, a modied multichannel equalization procedure is proposed to simplify the selection of reproduction
sources regularization. The paper presents objective evaluations of reproduced sound elds on the basis of
real ight recordings using an 80-channel microphone array and 41 actuators in the cabin mock-up.
1. INTRODUCTION
Sound quality and noise annoyance of vehicle sounds are
sometimes oversimplistically described by sound pres-
sure levels or more complex psychoacoustic metrics that
remain numbers only meaningful to specialists [1]. In
some situations, the opportunity to expose listeners to the
actual sounds is more pertinent. Early work dedicated
to sound reproduction or synthesis of ight vehicles for
sound quality or annoyance studies is the NASA ANOSS
project [2]. Recently, Janssens, Berckmans and cowork-
ers [3, 4] investigated analysis and synthesis algorithms
for aircraft interior and exterior sounds.
In these illustrative examples, the spatial character of
sound reproduction is not necessarily a primary aim.
However, it is known that spatial distribution of sound
sources inuence auditory masking and, therefore, the
overall sound quality. Recent works in the eld of air-
craft sound reproduction start to consider the spatial dis-
tribution of sound using different approaches, an exam-
ple is by Ploner-Bernard et al. [5]. The authors describe
the design of a ight simulator based on microphone ar-
ray measurements. However, results are not provided.
It is also recognized that the visual and general environ-
ment is important for jury testing and comfort studies.
Therefore, these studies and jury testing should be done
in vehicle mock-ups using invisible sound sources. In
our case, we focus on spectral and spatial quality of the
reproduced sound eld. The goal is the reproduction of a
sound eld, namely, a target sound eld, inside full-scale
aircraft cabin mock-up using trim panel actuators.
Concurrently to this emerging interest for audio tech-
nologies on the part of ight vehicle manufacturers that
are concerned by the sound quality and sound environ-
ment of their products, the audio community is years in
advance in sound eld reproduction, multichannel equal-
ization and panel actuators [6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14,
15, 16]. In this context, this paper presents an illustrative
application of audio technologies to an emerging eld of
applied research and development that could represent a
promising expansion for the audio community. Besides
the specic application of these techniques to an aircraft
cabin mock-up, this paper is illustrative of any sound en-
vironment reproduction system that could be developed
in vehicle mock-up using invisible sound sources and mi-
crophone array recordings.
In preliminary experiments of sound eld reproduction
inside aircraft cabin mock-up [17], both the target and re-
produced sound elds were measured in laboratory con-
ditions: the target sound eld was created using four
loudspeakers outside a mock-up to simulate an exter-
nal excitation using incoherent noises. Reproduction
was achieved using classical multichannel equalization
based on pseudo-inversion and least-mean-square meth-

ods with Tikhonov regularization. As mentioned [17],
the original contribution was the use of an actual mock-
up with trim panels actuators. Although this represents
an innovation, it also brings specic constraints and dif-
culties. Namely, the use of the basic trim panels as sound
reproduction sources makes the task more difcult be-
cause they are not intended for sound reproduction and
they are not ideal panel loudspeakers [14]. To reduce
the risk of audible squeaks and rattles, we introduced a
bass management system so that trim panels does not re-
ceive low-frequency content ([17, 18]). In the end, as
for many equalization and inverse problems, the selec-
tion of optimal or best regularization amount is not a triv-
ial task. In this paper, to potentially simplify the selec-
tion of the regularization amount, a simple modication
to multichannel equalization by regularized inversion is
proposed. The main contribution of this paper is the ac-
tual implementation and purely experimental realization
of sound eld reproduction of real ight recordings using
no less than 3280 transfer functions equalization.
This paper also introduces an additional contribution
with respect to our previous work [17] with the aircraft
mock-up: the use of real ight recording using a micro-
phone array in various ight conditions.
2. AIRCRAFT SOUNDS AND MULTICHANNEL
EQUALIZATION
Except for transitional stages such as taxi, take-off, land-
ing, engine starts, high-lift device operations, most of the
aircraft sounds as heard in passenger cabins can be con-
sidered stationary, at least at short time scale and from
a perceptive viewpoint [5]. In this paper, we investigate
sound eld reproduction of these stationary states for a
real in-ight sound environment. To illustrate these sig-
nal assumptions, a typical aircraft sound as recorded at
a single microphone in a CRJ900 is depicted in Fig. 1.
Physical units are not presented in this paper for con-
dentiality sake. As shown in Fig. 1(a), the sound pres-
sure level is nearly stationary. Figs. 1(b) and (c) show
the overall loudness as function of time and the signal
spectrogram. On the basis of the signal spectrogram,
the aforementioned assumptions are veried. Although
the multichannel signal processing presented in this pa-
per does not rely on signal stationarity hypothesis, the
fact that the studied sound elds are stationary circum-
vents issues encountered in single channel or multichan-
nel equalization algorithms based on system inversion
(audible artifacts such as pre- and post-echoes or ring-
ing).
Another issue with single- or multi-channel equalization
is related to robustness, i.e. as time passes the system re-
sponse may change and the compensation of multichan-
nel equalization may degrade over time. This is more
drastic when extreme or ideal equalization is aimed. In
this paper, since the number of equalization points is
much larger than the number of reproduction sources,
the equalization lter cannot perform ideal equalization
(cross-talk cancellation and system whitening). There-
fore, this tends to enhance robustness since not all the re-
sponse details are compensated. Moreover, the objective
evaluations are based on measured sound eld hours or
days after the initial system identication. Accordingly,
the results already illustrate the effect of passing time.
In the past decades, multichannel equalization have
found two types of applications. The rsts aim to re-
duce the individual loudspeaker coloration in extended
area without necessarily looking for cross-talk cancel-
lation [7, 16]. The seconds aim to achieve sound eld
reproduction [8, 10, 11, 13], i.e. whitening of the diago-
nal paths and cross-talk cancellation. This paper belongs
to the second type of applications. The work presented
in this paper also nds correspondance with recent spa-
tial audio and equalization applications in cars [15, 16]
where the acoustical properties of car cockpit is far from
ideal and typically need compensation.
3. EXPERIMENTAL SETUP
3.1. Microphone array and ight recordings
The target sound elds have been recorded in a 2-hour
ight in various conditions. This microphone array made
of 80 electret microphones was described in earlier pa-
pers [17]. The array installed in the aircraft cabin for the
actual in-ight recording is shown in Fig. 2. The approx-
imate microphone-to-microphone distance is 12.5 cm so
that spatial aliasing should be avoided up to 1.4 kHz
at the array. Acoustical pressure data was digitalized at
48 kHz. In a post-processing step, the 2-hour record was
partitioned in short scenes for known ight and aircraft
states. After editing of the recordings, a total of 25 scenes
were extracted. In this paper, the experiments are based
on 4-second extracts from one recordings (Fig. 1).

3.2. Transducer array in mock-up
The cabin mock-up is shown in Fig. 3. It models a Bom-
bardier CRJ900 with 8 seats and 6 windows. Details are
given in [17]. The main reproduction transducers are

32-mm inertial actuators mounted on internal trim pan-
els. Four of these actuators are mounted on each of the
9 trim panels. To induce vibration in the oor, 4 bass
shakers are attached to the oor. A subwoofer is in-
cluded. The microphone array inside the cabin mock-up
is shown in Fig. 3. The microphone array is identical to
the one used for the in-ight recording. In the mock-up,
the microphone array has two purposes: 1) identica-
tion of the plant and 2) measurements of the reproduced
sound elds. Indeed, in this paper, the objective evalua-
tions are based on measured sound elds as reproduced
in the actual mock-up.
3.3. System identication
The 3280 (41 actuators 80 microphones) frequency
response functions were measured with the logarithmic
swept sine method using 200 averages for the trim panels
and 400 averages for the subwoofer and oor actuators.
For the trim panel actuators, the swept sines range from
80 to 24 000 Hz. For the subwoofer, the swept sines start
from 1 up to 300 Hz. For the oor shakers, the swept
sines range from 20 to 1000 Hz. From the raw iden-
tied systems, the non-causal parts are removed in the
time-domain. The resulting system is stored in matri-
ces that include all these FRFs and IRs trimmed down to
24 000 samples. The modelling delay was set to 12 000
samples. Examples of measured impulse responses are
shown in Fig. 4.
3.4. Crossover and bass management
The 4 oor shakers and the subwoofer are in charge
of reproducing the low frequency range of the target

sound eld at 4 of the microphones while the 36 trim-
panel shakers must reproduce the remainder of the audio
bandwidth over the 80 microphones. The crossover is
achieved using simple low-pass and high-pass 4th-order
Butterworth lters [17]. We use forward and reverse l-
tering to ensure that the phases of the crossover lters
are linear. This also gives a -6 dB gain at the cut-off fre-
quency so that there is no amplication at the crossover
frequency once the low- and high-frequency range sys-
tems are combined. Recently, we investigated the ef-
fect of crossover frequency in the aircraft mock-up [18].
From these studies, the crossover frequency is 140 Hz.

4. MULTICHANNEL EQUALIZATION
The aim of multichannel equalization is simple: cre-
ate MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output) lters that,
once placed before an actual MIMO electroacoustic sys-
tem, will make this system diagonal and at, i.e. the di-
agonal path should be white (and of unity gain) and the
cross-talk should cancelled. The signal processing archi-
tecture is represented in Fig. 5 as a block diagram in the
frequency domain in matrix form.
The experimental plant including the reproduction
sources, the vibroacoustic responses of the mock-up and
the microphone array is described for each frequency

One of the simplest way to circumvent the limitation of

5. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS
The experiments go as follow: Once the multichannel
reproduction system is experimetnally identied and that
target sound elds are stored in wave les, the reproduc-
tion signals are computed for the test cases. Then the re-
production signals and sent to the mock-up and the repro-
duced sound eld is measured with the microphone ar-
ray. Objective evaluation of each test case is then achieve
in a post-processing stage.
To explain more easily the results of modied mul-
tichannel equalization, let rst introduce the singular
value spectrum of the system matrices, i.e. the low-
frequency system with 5 inputs and 4 outputs and the
high-frequency system with 36 inputs and 80 outputs.
These singular value spectrum are shown in Figs. 6(a)
and 6(b). With increasing frequency the largest singu-
lar value decreases and the smallest increases, this cor-
responds to a better conditioning at higher frequencies.
The sudden drops of the singular values (Fig. 6) appear
at frequency limits of the swept sines used for the iden-
tication of the oor shakers (up to 1000 Hz), the sub-
woofer (up to 300 Hz) and trim panels (from 80 Hz).
Besides the singular value spectrum, Fig. 6 also includes
relevant lines. To exemplify the potential regularization
impact using the normalized regularization parameter

(Sec. 4.3), lines proportional to

5.2. Tikhonov regularization
Multichannel equalization with Tikhonov regularization
is used as a rst test case. From [18], the best regulariza-
tion parameters were identied to be 0.01 for the low-
frequency system and 0.1 for the high-frequency sys-
tem. The ideal crossover frequency was found to be
140 Hz. Figure 13 shows the obtained performance met-
rics E

as function of frequency for this
test case. Generally speaking, the E

lowest frequencies and it tends to increase with higher
frequency in the high-frequency range. Since from 1 kHz
to 10 kHz the typical target PSD falls of nearly 40 dB

quency might explain the increase of relative reproduc-

. This general observation applies to the
following results. To illustrate the results, we also rely
on Welch periodograms of a selected monitoring micro-
phone recording of reproduced sound. The comparison
between the target and reproduction sounds at micro-
phone #14 is shown in Fig. 7. Clearly, the reproduced
PSD approaches the target PSD but it is not in exact cor-
respondence. As mentioned earlier, we remind that it is
impossible to obtain a perfect reproduction (in the objec-
tive sense) using more microphones than actuators.
5.3. Normalized Tikhonov regularization
Using the modied approach based on normalized
Tikhonov regularization (Sec. 4.3), several tests with
varying

were performed. Results for the high-
frequency range (above 140 Hz) are shown in Fig. 8.
We conduct separate studies for the two frequency ranges

since non-linear distortions in one frequency range might
degrade the sound eld reproduction in the other range.
For a very small normalized regularization

the other cases as grey thin lines. From the compari-
son of 8(a) and (b), we note that the most satisfying E
LS
does not necessarily corresponds to the lowest M
LS
. The
PSD estimate at the monitoring microphone is shown in
Fig. 9. The correspondence is acceptable for the most
satisfying regularization amount obtained with

=0.04.
Similar measurements of reproduced sound elds were
done for the low-frequency range of the system, results
are shown in Fig. 10. In terms of reproduction error E
LS
minimization, it seems that the best results are obtained
with

= 0.004. Using these two most satisfying param-
eters, the full bandwidth results are shown in Figs. 11 and
12.
5.4. Experimental results comparison
In this section, we compare: 1) the reference test case
from [17] with the best results obtained with the Tikhonv
regularization and 2) the best results obtained with nor-
malized regularization parameter. The curves are shown
in Fig. 13. The results with normalized regularization
parameter show a lower reproduction error (E
LS
) and
a signicantly lower reproduction source 2-norm (S
LS
).

reproduction source signals: less squeaks and rattles
should emanate from the trim panels. This also automat-
ically introduces frequency-dependent regularization.
6. CONCLUSION
In this paper, we shown that it is possible to achieve
sound eld reproduction of real ight recordings in cabin
mock-up using multichannel equalization based on least-
mean-square approaches with microphone and vibration
transducer arrays. Results are satisfactory if one takes
into account several limitations and compromises: 1) the
use of an overdetermined problem (M > L) and regular-
ization to prevent large reproduction signals that could
lead to audible squeaks and rattles 2) the need for a sat-
isfactory global sound reproduction in the mock-up. In-
deed, for the second issue, using a smaller microphone
arrays with M = L could give very low reproduction er-
ror at the microphone array but with larger reproduction
errors outside the microphone array and possible reduced

robustness. The results are also concluding because they
were not done in ideal conditions with respect to robust-
ness. Indeed, system identication was performed hours
or even days before the actual measurements of repro-

duced sound elds inside the mock-up.
Current and future works are oriented towards the im-
provement of the least-mean-square method. As it was
shown, the normalized regularization parameter can sim-
plify the selection of frequency-dependent regulariza-
tion, but the normalized regularization parameter still
difcult to select. To this end, we plan to work on further
modications of the method while introducing consid-
erations from the bounding property of condition num-
ber to approximately respect a maximum reproduction
source 2-norm. We also plan to work on new system
smoothing or modication algorithm before inversion to
enhance robustness, at the cost of increased reproduction
error. Example of work in this vein is [19].
Besides this, in a near future, the microphone array
recordings of the ight will be used within the context of
sound eld reproduction using commercial Wave Field
Synthesis system in a dedicated room. Standard Wave
Field Synthesis method will be adapted and the results

will be compared with sound eld reproduction evalua-
tion in the cabin mock-up.
