On Sunday, September 7, after the late service, the Missions Committee will be presenting
representatives from Habitat for Humanity as guests to our Celebration Sunday Potluck
luncheon. Please bring your favorite dish to share and listen to how Habitat for Humanity
serves the Nacogdoches community. We hope to see you at the Family Life Center to
celebrate and hear about the construction of the newest Habitat house in Nacogdoches.

People will come from east and west, from north and south, and will eat in the
kingdom of God.
Luke 13:29

Have you ever been in worship on Sunday morning, saying the words of the
Apostles Creed, and wonder why we believe in the catholic church? When we say
we believe in the holy catholic church, we say we believe in the universal church.
Catholic, far from meaning one particular branch of the church, means the entire
tree of the church. The Roman Catholic Church is the part of the universal church
headquartered in Rome. Protestants could say they are Lutheran Catholics, Baptist
Catholics, Presbyterian Catholics, or United Methodist Catholics.
To talk about the church being catholic reminds us that our brothers and sisters in
the faith are scattered across the whole earth, using different languages, liturgies,
and customs; but we all give our allegiance to Jesus Christ. We are all working for
the same cause, sharing the same good news.
There is a lot of great stuff coming up at the church in September. We kick off Common Ground on Wednesday eve-
nings, Confirmation classes for 6
th
graders, Stephen Ministry training, Grief Support and the list goes on. See you in
Church!

Peace,

There are persons for companionship, but then there are friends who are more loyal than family.
Proverbs 18:24 (CEB)

School is here! I know that many of you have mixed feelings about the start of classes, but one thing I always
loved about school was that I would see my friends. Friends are important. They share the best (and worst) moments
of our lives. We laugh and cry with them. They smile and greet us. They stand beside us when we feel alone. They
become like family.
The exact translation of the verse above is uncertain; however, in all translations there is a distinction made
between companion friends and real friends. Companions may be fun to be around, but real friends will always be
around. Many people surround themselves with lots of people, but never spend the time and energy to create real
friendships. As you know, friendship is not an easy task. It means actually caring, becoming vulnerable, and opening
up. These are not things that are easy or comfortable, but they are worth it. Friends are worth it.
I believe that friendship is a basic quality of the church. Friendship means showing love. It means responding
out of genuine care rather than selfishness. Our mission, as the United Methodist Church, states that we are to
make disciples for the transformation of the world. A part of that transformation comes through our action as friends.
Jesus fed the hungry, healed the sick, accepted the outcast, and raised the dead. Yet, he told us that those who fol-
low him would do even greater things. Can you imagine! Next time you meet someone who needs a friend, I chal-
lenge you to be that friend. Take a risk. Sit down and listen; find out how you can help. God works through friendship.

God bless you all,

ADULT STUDIES & ACTIVITIES
Pastors Bible Study
A wise Bible teacher once told his students, Many times, when people hear a familiar text is about to be read, they
think to themselves, Oh, here we go again. The fact is that they may never have gone in the first place. The para-
bles are such texts. Some are so commonplace that they have made it into our modern language as a law the
Good Samaritan Law. Parables help us to evaluate our lives. The parables of Jesus tend to focus on answering
two questions: What is the kingdom of God like? and, How should we live our lives so that the kingdom will come
near? Join our pastors, Jeff McDonald and Trent Oliver, for a ten-week study on the parables of Jesus. Led by Dr.
Jeff McDonald and Rev. Trent Oliver in the Parlor

The Call: Living Sacramentally, Walking Justly
This UMW study book will be offered in a two-session study, September 10 & 17. The study will take an in-depth
look at Baptism and Holy Communion and the way the sacraments call us to live the Christian faith in our daily
walk. No book required, and all are invited. Led by Rev. Terry Smith in Room 201.

Bell Choir (6:00 pm) - We will be glad to show you a sample of the music we use and
demonstrate how easy it is to ring. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm in Room 207.

children participate in activities related to the lesson or the scripture verse being highlighted.

Children participate in the Active Rotation Model System (ARMS) to deepen their spiritual formation. They move
among Godly Play, scripture lesson, and arts and crafts. Each twenty-five rotations focus on a scripture and how
the lesson relates to the child and his/her life.

Children explore their own creativity and personal relationship with God through the various activities and interac-

A Personal Message to You from a Stephen Minister
In our busy world today, it sometimes seems as
though we don't have time for one more thing. I have
found Stephen Ministry to be not just another time commit-
ment, but an exciting challenge for the heart and spirit and
a wonderful walk of faith. I had been involved with various
church committees for a number of years, but always felt I
could do more. I was interested in finding a way to put my
faith into action. I am a quiet personshy, reallyand I
wasnt sure that I could be a Stephen Minister, but I felt
God wanted me to try. So I began the 50 hours of Stephen Minister training. We met each week for two and a half-hours
and continually pushed our spiritual envelope. The time flew by!
Each training session was filled with helpful information about caregiving. With the help of our Stephen Leaders,
we all felt supported, loved, and educated. By the end of our training, I felt more at ease and much more confident in my
abilities as a Stephen Minister. I learned a lot about what it takes to care for and support someone and to share my faith
on a weekly basis. After our commissioning, I was assigned a care receiver. As a spiritual caregiver, I used my training
to prepare myself for whatever lay ahead. At first it was scary and difficult, but through daily prayer and twice-a-month
peer-group supervision, I made progress. I was amazed to see God at work in and through us. God is the one who
brings hope, love, and forgiveness to hurting people.
The four points of the Caregiver's Compass illustrate what Stephen Ministers are all about. We have COMPAS-
SION for the care receivers' spiritual, emotional, or physical issues. We are FULL OF FAITH because we rely on God
not our own actionsto bring hope and healing to our care receivers. We become SKILLED through our initial training
and twice-monthly supervision and continuing education. Care receivers depend on our TRUSTWORTHINESS
confidentiality is a cornerstone of Stephen Ministry. At the center of the compass and at the center of our ministry is our
Lord and Savior JESUS CHRIST, who heals through us and fills us with faith, love, and forgiveness.
A Stephen Minister meets with a care receiver once a week for about an hour. That one hour of caregiving is
certainly important to the Stephen Minister. But to the person receiving care, that one hour means more than we will ever
know. Growing in faith and love for God by caring for someone who is hurting has been the most meaningful experience
of my life. I am no longer afraid to share my faith. I have grown in my ability to pray. Serving Christ as a Stephen Minister
is one of my greatest treasures. As our congregation looks to train another class of Stephen Ministers, I hope others of
you are ready to join us in this wonderful journey. Please consider becoming a Stephen Minister. God will bless you and
others through you in ways you never dreamed possible!
STEPHEN MINISTRY
GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP
"For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant
and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to cry and a time to
laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance." Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 NLT

The scriptures make it clear that there is a time to weep and a time to mourn. We never want to do it, but this
scripture helps us know that its normal, its natural, its even necessary. When you have had a great loss in your life, it
helps to understand the numerous feelings and behaviors peopleeven faithful Christians--go through in the grief jour-
ney. It helps to have a safe place to go and companions who will help you recognize and express your feelings. It helps
to see that others have had the same losses and are finding their way through the wilderness of grief. In other words, it
helps to have a Grief Support Group.

Our next Grief Support Group will begin on Tuesday, September 23, and meet for 10 sessions, studying the
book, Understanding Your Grief: Finding Hope and Healing for Your Heart by Alan Wolfelt, Ph.D. The group will be
smallno more than 10 participantsso that there can be trusted and comfortable sharing. The cost will be $25 and will
include a personal copy of the textbook. Preregistration is necessary, but anyone in our community is welcome to attend.
If you have had a loss or know someone who has, please call Judy or Jim Buckingham at 569-6160 for more information
or to reserve a place.

The Texas Conference Annual Meeting-Fall Festival will be held Friday, Sept. 19-Saturday, Sept 20, at Lakeview Con-
ference Center. The theme for this year's meeting is "Who Is Our Neighbor?" with Matthew 22:36-40 as the focus scrip-
ture: Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it:
Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

We will meet in the church parking lot to carpool to Lakeview on Sat. the 20th at 7:15 am. Forms to preregister for the
event are available on the UMW Bulletin Board; the early registration deadline is Sat, Sept. 6th. The cost to attend is
$20 and includes lunch. Activities will include hands-on project dedication, a pledge service, the annual business meet-
ing and installation of officers, and afternoon focus groups on identifying and loving our neighbors in need.

mation please contact, Jo Taylor (jtaylor@sfasu.edu; 936-465-3901).
