TURNING-UP 10 GIGABIT ETHERNET LAN SERVICES OVER OTN Mai Abou-Shaban, Product Specialist, Transport and Datacom Business Unit Ethernet trafc growth across metropolitan and core optical networks is forcing service providers to consider new approaches to efciently and cost-effectively transmit Ethernet and other data services over a common optical transport network (OTN). Over-clocked OTN is a recently adopted technology that is gaining popularity for its ability to transport 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) LAN services over OTN (as per ITU-T series G supplement 43). In order to map 10 GbE LAN services over optical networks, over-clocked OTN automatically increases the payload rate from the standard 10.709 Gbit/s to either 11.0491Gbit/s (OTU1e) or 11.0957 Gbit/s (OTU2e) to match the 10 GbE LAN client signal. Transporting 10 GbE LAN services in this fashion takes advantage of the OTNs forward error correction (FEC) and end-to-end performance monitoring, resulting in enhanced bit error-rate performance, expanded reach of optical links to approximately 18 km without regenerators and support for more optical channels to be carried over the same ber while simplifying fault isolation. EXFOs Power Pack, composed of the portable FTB-200 Compact Platform and the FTB-8130NGE Power Blazer Next-Generation Multiservice Test Module, offers a complete suite of testing capabilities for commissioning, turning-up and qualifying 10 GbE LAN services end-to-end over OTNas illustrated in Figure 1. Validating Mapped 10 GbE LAN Signal over OTN Generating Over-Clocked Signals with Mapped 10 GbE LAN Running the FTB-8130NGE multiservice testing module in SONET/SDH Analyzer (SSA) mode allows the user to generate an over-clocked OTN signaleither OTU2e (11.0957 Gbit/s 100 ppm) or OTU1e (11.0491 Gbit/s 100 ppm) signal with a mapped 10 GbE LAN client signal. In this process, the user can congure the 10 GbE LAN framed layer 2 parameters as part of the test conguration, including frame size, transmit rate, source/destination MAC addresses, VLAN (ID, type and priority) and pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS) test pattern. Once the test setup is dened and the test has started, it is essential to ensure that the 10 GbE link is up and connectivity is established. This can be easily veried in the TreeView page, where the 10 GbE status displays Link Up in green. Printed in Canada 09/04 Running EoOTN Bit-Error-Rate Test Running a 10 Gigabit Ethernet over OTN (EoOTN) bit error-rate (BER) test end-to-end across the OTN is very popular, especially with users who have a SONET/SDH background. In this test, the user can congure the FTB-8130NGE Power Blazer module to send a PRBS test pattern in the congured 10 GbE frame across the over-clocked OTN interfaces and measure the ratio of the error bits compared to the number of sent bits. A BER test is typically executed over an extended period of time before the customers applications start running. Once the EoOTN BER test is started, it is recommended to check the test results periodically to ensure that the test is running error-free. Using the FTB-8130NGE Power Blazer, test results can be veried in the BERT page where pattern loss and bit error counters should display zero for the entire test period. Verifying the Embedded 10 GbE LAN Trafc Statistics In addition, the FTB-8130NGE Power Blazer provides complete statistics of the embedded 10 GbE LAN service within the OTN. It is recommended to check the Rx statistics and ensure that no local or remote faults are detected as well as frame check sequence (FCS) errors. The user can also verify the 10 GbE traffic throughput, including the received data rate in Mbit/s (bandwidth) and the percentage of line rate utilization. Once the BER test is completed, a report can be generated as a birth certificate of the commissioned circuits and for service level agreements (SLAs).
Validating 10 GbE LAN Service End to End To test the pure 10 GbE LAN service end to end, users can run the FTB-8130NGE Power Blazer in Packet Analyzer (PA) mode and conduct RFC 2544 testing, (including throughput, latency, frame loss and back-to-back), which provides performance availability, transmission delay, link burstability and service integrity measurements. By conducting RFC 2544 measurements, carriers can certify that the working parameters of the delivered 10 GbE LAN service comply with their customers SLA. Conclusion Designed primarily for Tier-1 eld testing applications, EXFOs compact and portable Power Pack supports over-clocked OTN testing, among many other applications required for multiservice converged networks. These capabilities include DSn/PDH, SONET/SDH/OTN, Ethernet and Fibre Channel up to 10 Gbit/s. The Power Pack also supports battery operation, remote management capability and integrated optical testing tools for simplied eld testing, making it the industrys leading multiservice eld-testing solution.
