Steel Frame
Ceiling Systems
Introduction
C SR G FC has developed a w ide range of tested fire and/
or acoustic ceiling system s utilising steel fram ing and
plasterboard fixed to one or both sides.
These system s are m ost com m only specified above stairw ells
and corridors, and under concrete floors w here personnel
access is not required.
This section also details m ethods for constructing isolated
bulkheads utilising steel furring channel fram ing.
Frame Requirements
R efer to the Fram ing section for the general requirem ents on
steel fram e construction.
All systems detailed in this section are non-trafficable,
and are designed to carry the weight of the ceiling only.
The ceiling framing must be strengthened to support
light fittings and services.
Ceilings Lined
One Side
J oist Selection
Steel joists for ceilings lined one side can be selected based
on Table 7, w hich provides span inform ation for R ondo
Lipped Steel Stud sections w hen used as ceiling joists.
J oist End Support
R efer to follow ing pages for alternative ceiling joist end
support configurations and recom m ended construction
m ethods.
Nogging/Bridging
W here joist span exceeds 2.50m , one row of nogging/
bridging is required at m id span.
W here joist span exceeds 4.00m , tw o row s of nogging/
bridging are required at equal spacings.
Control J oints
C ontrol joints are to be installed in both fire rated and non-fire
rated continuous interior ceiling areas, spaced at no m ore
than 12m centres in both directions, and as detailed in the
Fram ing section earlier in this guide.

Plasterboard
Fixing
G yprock plasterboard sheets should be installed w ith the
long edge at right angles to the direction of the fram ing to
w hich they are fixed.
Fire rated installations m ust be fastener fixed. Adhesive is
not perm itted.
Adhesive does not constitute a fixing system by itself and
m ust be used in conjunction w ith nails or screw s.
A dhesive daubs m ust be kept 200m m m inim um from
fastening points.
Fasteners are to be installed at 10 - 16m m from sheet
edges.
Sheets are to be held firm ly against fram e w hile fasteners
are positioned. W herever possible com m ence fastening
from the centre portion of the sheet, proceeding to the ends
and edges. Alternatively, start at one edge and w ork across
the sheet to the other edge.
Fasteners are to be driven hom e w ith the head slightly
below the surface of the sheet, but not punched through
the face linerboard. C are should be taken to avoid
dam aging the face or core of the plasterboard.
Plasterboard m ust not be fixed directly to steel thicknesses
greater than 1.2m m B M T.
Fixings to C C A treated tim bers m ust be class 3 screw s or
hot dip galvanised nails.
For prepainted m etal, LO S P or C C A treated tim ber
fram ing, use 1/3 spacing m ethod or full screw fixing.
Non Fire Rated Ceiling Systems
W hen directly fixing a single layer system , the plasterboard
sheets m ay be either all fastener fixed or fastener/adhesive
fixed.
W hen fixing a tw o layer system , the first layer m ust be all
fastener fixed. The second layer m ay be all fastener fixed
or adhesive/fastener fixed.
Fire Rated Ceiling Systems
Plasterboard m ust be fastener fixed only, adhesive is not
perm itted.
Fire rated ceiling system s m ust be installed strictly in
accordance w ith C SR G yprock specifications.
Plasterboard J oints
W herever possible, butt jointing of sheets on ceilings should
be avoided.
In non fire rated single layer system s, w here butt joints on
ceilings are positioned betw een fram ing m em bers, the sheet
ends m ust be reinforced (back-blocked), and depressed,
form ing a recess to enable jointing.
For detailed inform ation, refer to the G yprock Plasterboard
R esidential Installation G uide, N G YP547.
In m ulti-layer system s, butt joints in hidden layers are to be
form ed on fram ing m em bers and offset by 450m m m inim um
in consecutive layers. B utt joints in the final layer are to be
form ed w ithin 50m m of the centreline betw een m em bers,
offset by a m inim um of 450m m from previous layers and in
adjoining sheets, and fixed w ith lam inating screw s at 200m m
m axim um centres.
In m ulti-layer system s recessed joints in consecutive layers
m ust be offset by a m inim um of 300m m .
Control J oints
C ontrol joints are to be installed in fire rated continuous
interior ceiling areas, spaced at no m ore than 12m centres
in both directions, and as detailed in the Fram ing section
earlier in this guide.
Caulking
To attain the specified FRL, all perim eter gaps and penetrations
m ust be carefully and com pletely filled w ith G yprock

Fire
M astic. In som e cases, verm iculite plaster m ay be used. (Refer
to appropriate details). Verm iculite for caulking is to be m ixed
3:2 by volum e w ith cornice cem ent. U se sufficient w ater to
achieve a stiff w orkable m ix. Verm iculite plaster is not to be used
as a general purpose acoustic or fire rated caulking, except
w here detailed in this m anual. Verm iculite has no capacity to
accom m odate building m ovem ent.
In non fire rated system s, to attain the stated acoustic rating,
fill all gaps and around penetrations w ith G yprock W et Area
Acrylic Sealant or G yprock Fire M astic.
Curved Ceilings
For details on plasterboard fixing to curved ceilings, refer to
the G yprock Steel Fram e W all System s Installation G uide,
N G YP544.
Plasterboard J ointing & Finishing
R efer to the G yprock Plasterboard R esidential Installation
G uide, N G Y P 547 for detailed jointing and finishing
inform ation.
For non fire rated ceilings, inform ation is provided for various
Levels of Finish, including tolerances, back-blocking and
fastener spacing.
In m ulti-layer system s, jointing and finishing is required on
the visible outer layer only.
Laminating Screws
In 2 and 3 layer ceiling system s, G yprock

Lam inating
Screw s (40m m x N 10) m ay be used to lam inate layers of
plasterboard together at butt joints and control joints form ed
betw een fram ing.

Grid Installation
The follow ing inform ation assum es the room is square and
the ceiling panels are to be installed in a standard square-on-
square pattern. Installation m ethods w ill need to be m odified
to allow for out of square room s or other grid patterns, such
as brick pattern, and to allow for light fittings, etc.
For best appearance, the panels closest to the w alls m ay
need to be cut to size to provide a sym m etrical pattern. To
determ ine the position of the grid, determ ine the num ber
of 1200m m panels that w ill fit the room dim ension.
D eterm ine any rem ainder and add 1200m m . D ivide this
total by 2. This is the m argin along each side of the room .
N ow determ ine the num ber of 600m m panels that w ill fit
the room dim ension. D eterm ine any rem ainder and add
600m m . D ivide this total by 2. This is the m argin at each
end of the room .
Example Grid Calculations:
M ain Tee G rid
4000 1200 = 3.3 m odules
4000 3600 (3 panels) = 400
400 + 1200 = 1600
1600 2 = 800 m argin on each side of the room .
C ross Tee G rid
5000 600 = 8.3 m odules
5000 4800 (8 panels) = 200
200 + 600 = 800
800 2 = 400 m argin at each end of the room .

They are not trafficable unless stated, and are designed
to carry the weight of the ceiling only. W here a trafficable
ceiling is required, install a proprietary trafficable ceiling
system .
S trengthen suspension system s to support light fittings

Any additional loads are not to be placed upon, or carried
by the suspension system w ithout the approval of R ondo
B uilding Services or C SR G yprock.
Pressure Equalisation Air Grilles
R oom s w hich do not have perm anently open air ventilation
grilles should have grilles fitted in the doors to allow air
pressure to equalise during opening/closing.
If no ventilation grilles are fitted to a room or its doors, C SR
G yprock recom m ends that each panel be held in place w ith
P anel H old-dow n C lips (N 703), to prevent panels lifting
under pressure fluctuations.
