Calea Victoriei

Calea Victoriei (Victory Avenue) is a major avenue in central Bucharest. It leads from Splaiul
Independen ei (which runs parallel to the !m"ovi a #iver ) to the north and then northwest up to
$ia a %ictoriei , where oseaua &iseleff continues north.

History
.ookin* north on /alea %ictoriei in '0+1. In the fore*round the (otel /apitol is at left and the
restaurant /asa /ap a at ri*ht. 2he tall "uildin* at left is $alatul 2elefoanelor. 3ll remain landmarks
today.
Initially, the road was known as Uli a Mare (Large Street),4'5 also known as Drumul Bra ovului
(Bra ov Road ), "ein* part of the trade route "etween Bucharest and the city of Bra ov , in
2ransylvania.4)5 In '60), ruler /onstantin Br!ncoveanu paved the road with wood and partly
re*ulari7ed it, makin* it pass throu*h the domains of the B8l8ceni, of the Saint 9ohn :onastery,
;l8tari :onastery and of the /antacu7enes up to the S8rindari :onastery.4+5 Since '60) it was
known as Podul Mogo oaiei (Mogo oaia Wood-Paved Road ) "ecause it also was connectin* the
Bucharest<s center with Br!ncoveanu<s :o*o oaia $alace some km outside the city.4-5
:ost roads in the Balkans at that time "ecame muddy in the sprin* and autumn, and the wood
prevented this. /onse=uently the road was one of the most important construction works of the area
and a source of pride to Bucharesters. 2he area surroundin* the road "ecame the most fashiona"le

2he wood was not a very sturdy material and often it was in a "ad state, despite "ein* repaired

%ictoriei northward was "uilt "y $avel &iseleff, the commander of the occupation troops, and is
today named after him. In '@-) the road was paved with co""lestone. It was later up*raded to
asphalt.
