6. A rod which tappers uniformly from 40mm dia to 20 mm dia in a length of 400mm is subjected an
axial load of 500 N. E=2.1*105 N/mm2. Find the extension on the rod(8)

7.a)A cylindrical shell 3 m long which is closed at the end has an internal diameter of 1m and wall
thickness of 15 mm. Calculate the circumferential and longitudinal stress induced and also change in
the dimensions of the sheel.if it is subjected to an internal pressure of 1.5 mn/m2.(16)

b)The following data related to a bar subjected to a tensile stress ,dia:30 mm ,Load P=54 KN,Length
= 300 mm,Elongation of length 0.112 mmElongation of dia:0.00366 mm.Calculate poison ratio and
the value of 3 module.(16)
8.a)A steel bar 300mm long, 50mm wide and 40mm thick is subjected to a pull of 300kn in the
direction of its length. Determine the change in volume. Take E=2X105N/MM2 and 1/m=0.25.(16)

b)A steel rod of 3cm diameter and 5 m long is connected to two grips and the rod is maintained at a
temperature of 950c.Dertermine the stress and pull exerted when the temperature falls to 300c,if
i.the ends do not yield and ii.the end yield by o.12cm.
Take E=2x105mn/m2 and thermal coefficient =12x10-6/0c.(16)

6. Find the modulus of elasticity for a rod, which tapers uniformly from 30mm to 15 mm diameter in
length of 350mm.The rod, is subjected to an axial load of 5.5 KN and extension of therodis0.025mm.
7. a)An axial pull of 35000 N is acting on a bar of three length as shown in fig. If the youngs
modulus =2x105N/mm2, Determine stresses in each section and ii). Total extension of the bar.(16)

b) Steel rod of 3 cm dia is enclosed centrally in a hollow copper tube of external 5 cm and internal
dia 4 cm.The composite bar is then subjected to an axial pull of 45000N.If the length of each bar is
equal to 15 cm,dermine.i)The stresses in the rod and tube and ii)Load carried by each bar. Take E for
steel=2.1x105N/mm2 and for copper=1.1x105N/mm2(16).
8.a)A cylinder of internal dia 2.5 m and of thickness 5 cm contains a gas. if the tensile stress in the
material is not to exceed 80 N/mm2 .determine the internal pressure of the gas.(16)
