Saul was a
former education-officer
at Norwich Cathedra and
now works in a variety of
projects with children and
young people.
A race night, run by the
West Norwich Lions and
assisted by theTaverham
Lions at the University Hospital,
raised 1800 towards
brachytherapy equipment for their
radiotherapy unit.
114 was raised for club funds at
a collection at Sainsburys,and the
club was represented at the
Wroxham car show at the
Showground.
The clubs
used-
spectacle
collection for
the year has
now reached
11,500.These are sent to African
countries etc.to assist in improving
their eyesight.
Future race nights are also
booked in September,October and
November and the club would love
to have some volunteers for
Christmas door to door collections
during December.

Archaeological project at
Three Score
during 2013 2014.
Summary of the results.
Three areas along a new road
to be built at Three Score were
identified as having a high
probability of archaeological
being features present. The
project undertaken by NPS
Archaeology unearthed
archaeological features
reflecting two main periods of
activity, Neolithic (4000 to
2500BC) and Late Saxon
(10th/11th Century AD).
The Neolithic evidence
comprised a number of pits
which reflected the a pattern of
Neolithic activity often
observed as enigmatic clusters
of pits, especially in eastern
England. Such pits may have
been excavated for ritualistic
reasons, or they may once
have contained some meat and
bone waste which has rotted
away in the sandy soils leaving
no trace. The dating of these
features was provided by small
pottery sherds, a flint scraper
and flint flakes. People in the
Neolithic in this area may have
lived a largely nomadic way of
life and the pits may have been
a way of marking territory.

The Late Saxon evidence was in the
form of ditches focussed in an area
close to the present Bowthorpe
shopping centre. These ditches were
a large boundary ditch and a possible
enclosure ditch marking out a small

Problems with church roof.
Bowthorpe Church Centre was opened on 27
th
September, 1986. For 8 years
prior to this the congregation met at the Open Door in Clover Hill Village Centre.
Since then it has been at the heart of this community. Like me I expect that
most residents have memories of attending wedding and funeral services within
this building as well as the ever popular Christmas carol services.
Many of us attend services there on a more regular basis and of course it serves
several denominations. It also provides for a number of community groups, and
activities e.g. Tots on Thursday, W. I. , the Community Garden Committee and
other small group meetings. It hosted the Bowthorpe Forum, bringing together
planners, police, the public and local councillors and business leaders during
the initial planning and construction of Three Score, and continues as a venue
for sharing information with local residents, as in the recent display of plans for
the Bowthorpe Care Village.
It looks a fine building in keeping with the Bowthorpe conservation area .
It was disappointing and distressing therefore to learn recently that there are
major problems with the roof. It has started leaking quite badly despite it being a
relatively new building .
A rough estimate of costs has indicated that repairs are likely to cost many
thousands of pounds, possibly amounting to a six figure sum.
A small group of church members have formed an action plan to tackle this
problem. A survey will be needed to determine the exact details of the task in
hand. When this is done we will be applying for sources of funding and will be
launching an appeal .
We will keep the Bowthorpe community informed of the process.
We know that a church is more than a building and this
building is more than a church.
I hope that we can count on your support in the coming
months.

plot. This activity is almost certainly linked with the known original deserted medieval
settlement of Bowthorpe, located a short distance to the west.
This excavation adds to what is known of life in the Neolithic in the Yare Valley area and
could contribute to research questions connected with the growth of villages from the Late
Saxon period onwards. The findings are being looked at in detail and it is anticipated that the
results will be published in the Norfolk County Archaeological Journal.

This months issue of the Bowthorpe News, I am covering the topic of
Rogue Traders. Rogue Traders are people who pretend to be builders needing
to do 'urgent' repairs or sales people offering bargain products. They often
pressurise householders to pay in advance for materials or do poor work at highly
inflated price. They will often cold call on vulnerable households and deliberately
overcharge for unsatisfactory goods and services. This can include charging for
unnecessary work, damaging property deliberately in order to obtain money,
leaving work unfinished and intimidating householders.
Victims of this practice are often vulnerable or elderly and in the most serious
cases, offenders will return to the same victim again and again until their savings
are exhausted.
Our recommended advice on tackling doorstep rogue traders includes:
Close and lock your back door before answering the front door.
Use a spy hole, chain or window to have a look at the caller before answering the
door. If you do not recognise them speak through the closed and locked door.
Display a No Cold Calling sticker on your door - these are free and available from
your local Safer Neighbourhood Team.
Never buy goods and services from people calling at your door.
If the caller is selling something or offering work on your house or garden tell
them that you are not interested and ask them to leave.
If they do not leave tell them you will call the police.
Always ask for proof of identity. Take it from the person (through the letterbox)
and read it carefully.
Phone the company or organisation the caller claims to be from (use the number
in the phone book) to confirm their identity.
If you have any doubt keep them out.
If you do need to employ a tradesman, please remember these useful tips:

Avoid any cold callers that may turn up or ring unexpectedly or unannounced
offering to carry out repairs.
When seeking a reliable trader, talk to family, friends and neighbours to get
recommendations, or look for a Trust mark-registered firm. Details of accredited
traders in your area are available from Norfolk Trusted Trader. Report any
unscrupulous traders either to police or Trading Standards.
Ask traders to provide you with written contact details, and consider getting

written quotes (not estimates) from at least three traders. Ask about insurance
backed guarantees.
Consumer law allows you a seven day cooling off period so you can change your
mind about any service offered by someone who arrives uninvited or by
appointment.
Keep back part of the cost until the repair job has been satisfactorily completed. This
will provide an incentive for the trader to complete the job or put right any problems.

Norfolks Police and Crime Commissioner, Stephen Bett, launched a month
-long consultation during August to give people a greater say in how anti -
social behaviour and low-level crime are dealt with. He said I want to hear
peoples views so I can then work with the Chief Constable to formulate
a list of Community Remedies for Norfolk,

What do you think of when you think of God? Many people, including some
Christians, dont like the image of a God who judges. The difculty comes
because judgement has negative connotations for us. And a day of
judgement sounds foreboding and grim, and somewhat old-fashioned.

However, in the Bible Gods judgement is a good thing, even something to be
celebrated. We like things to be fair and just in this country. We are known
for it across the world. After all, which of us likes someone jumping the
queue? Justice is not just a British tradition. It is also a Christian tradition. The
Christian faith teaches that God is not only loving but just. God stands up for
what is right, and there will be a day when injustice is dealt with one-and-for-
all.

Bishop Tom Wright comments, In a world of injustice, bullying, violence,
arrogance and oppression, the thought that there might be a coming day
when the wicked are frmly put in their place and the poor and weak are
given their due is the best news there can be. Faced with a world of rebellion,
a world of exploitation and wickedness, a good God must be a God of
judgement.

So, the man who cons an elderly lady out of her life savings, the drug pusher
who ofers drugs for free to teenagers in order to get them hooked, the
creators of computer viruses, the drunk driver, the people trafckers, and
many other untold injustices too numerous to mention, they will not escape
justice. God is good and therefore must stand in judgement over wickedness,
injustice and oppression. That there will be a day when God judges and rids
the world of evil is cause for celebration.

WHAT HURTS THE MOST?
In July, teams of young people from the
New Day event on the Norfolk Show-
ground came to Bowthorpe to carry out a survey in the community, asking just
one queston What hurts the most?
Death and sufering cause the greatest hurts to those living in Bowthorpe. Other
issues included: injustce, relatonship problems,
disappointment, stress, family challenges,
loneliness, rejecton, fear, abuse,
mental illness, money worries, worthlessness, addicton,
bad data, confict, indiference,
lack of confdence, other.
If you have been afected by any of these issues or wish to talk personally about
those issues which hurt you the most, please contact our minister Revd Mark

In July we listened to a very
interestng talk by Christne
Humphries on tracing your
family history and in August
we held a Bingo Night. This
was a very excitng evening,
partcularly for those who
won the many prizes.

we will be listening to a talk
on Community Sentencing
by Paul Allen. The evening
will begin at 7:30 p.m. and
visitors are welcome.

Much of the life of a
wood is carried on out
of sight. Below ground
the tree roots
cooperate with fungi
which may grow
around the root or even reach right into
the trees cells. The fungi take sugar from
the tree and in return give it water and by
breaking down the dead wood and
leaves release their goodness for the
tree to use again. Some trees like beech
cannot grow without the help of particular
fungi. One fungus can link all the trees in
the wood together. Such large fungi are
the biggest living organisms on
earth, weighing tons and
stretching underground for
miles. All this happens out of
sight for most of the year. But in
autumn we can see the fruiting
bodies of the fungi above
ground. It is well worth looking
for them. They come in a
surprising range of shapes and
colours. We all probably can
recognize the fly agaric fungus
from childrens books about
gnomes and toadstools: a red
cap with white spots. King
Alfreds cakes fungus looks like
small cakes burnt to a cinder. It
often occurs on dead ash wood.
Bracket fungi growing out of tree
trunks look rather like they could
support a shelf. The colours can
be remarkable. Stags horn
fungus look like miniature
antlers. You need to look
carefully at dead wood on the
ground. Most fungi dont have
agreed common names so feel
free to invent them yourselves.

range of household items) to our lounge 9.30am -10.30am. Visitors most

September: Our annual Macmillan Coffee Morning in the
lounge starts 10am.
This is one of our main events of the year, with so much going on, there
are prizes, raffles, tombola and refreshments. Its a great event so one to
keep for your diary - remember it starts at 10.00 am and visitors are most
welcome.

Hello everyone. It seems a long time since I last wrote the Ashwell Court
news and, after a glorious summer, real beach weather, we seem today to be back to
winter, with cold, dull weather. However we hope you all enjoyed the summer, as
we have. We have carried on with our usual selection of entertainment and other
activities.
In July with our Bradecroft friends we enjoyed a lovely day at Sheringham in
gorgeous weather. After a refreshing paddle (well some of us braved the stones to
get to the sea) on the way back we stopped for fish and chips at Roughton. Fish and
chips also feature in our life as once a month we have a fish and chip lunch,
ordered and delivered from a local shop so no cooking! This is always on a
Saturday, and is very welcome. Many thanks to Joyce who organises it and to
everyone who takes it in turn to provide the sweet. Also in July we had a visit from
The Southpark Stompers, who treated us to a display of very accomplished line
dancing.
As I expect many of you did, some of us attended the two Holiday at Home sessions
where the food and entertainment were once again first class. Every year these two
days are brilliant and the organizers are to be congratulated for what must be a lot of
organising work, and also for the excellent meals on both days.
Another enjoyable day out, which several of us at Ashwell Court attended was a
day trip to Clacton organised by Doreen Steel who runs the Day Centre at
Breckland Hall. Doreen also brings cakes and tea so we stop for a picnic at
Needham Lakes on the way home after a very enjoyable day.
We have been having other lovely events at Ashwell Court. We had an
evening of prize money bingo, which was very enjoyable. In August we
had our annual Ham Salad tea followed by entertainment by Gerry, a
lively Irish entertainer.
Then our own talented resident entertainers treated us to an afternoon concert and
sing-along. Tony who plays the keyboard and John the harmonica and sings, gave
us a full afternoon of enjoyable entertainment with famous songs from musical
shows, and other familiar songs. As everyone present was equipped with song-
sheets all could join in. It was a very enjoyable afternoon and thanks to Tony and
John for their hard work, to the entertainment team for the refreshments in the
break and to CJ for providing and putting in the sound equipment.
On a sad note, I have to report the death of one of our residents, Val (No
8). She was a lovely lady who will be greatly missed. Our sympathy goes
to all her family and friends. We hope we will continue to have the
company and help of her lovely family.

Hello again,
July is gone, but
we had a nice
time at
Sheringham. It
was very hot, and
most of us went
to the wall at the bottom and watched the
sea . A very pleasant trip, but I did have
complaints about the fish tea at Roughton
so I dont think we are likely to call again.
Might I make a suggestion? We take our
sandwiches and stop in the pull-in and sit
on the grass,haha.
Now we come to August we have had a
nice day. Our driver took us for a ride
round Yarmouth before dropping us off at
market gates. The weather was kind to us

SLIMMING STORY
A local mum who was shamed into facing the fact that she
still looked pregnant 3 months after giving birth, when a
friend inspired her to lose 3 stone in just four months.

Lorraine Lewis, 36 of Tacolneston decided she needed to
take action when she bumped into a friend who knew she
was pregnant but unaware her daughter was already three
months old. She asked Lorraine confidently "When is the
baby due?" Lorraine laughed but was devastated as she
pointed out her baby across the room.

That evening with her friends words still ringing in her ears as she tucked into her
favourite family size chcolate bar & a whole packet of biscuits whilst trawling
Facebook an advert for her local Slimming World Group popped up. Lorraine knew
from that moment she had to make drastic changes, she has since lost 3 stones in
just four months & seen her & her families life change dramatically.

When she arrived at her first group Lorraine couldn't believe it when her consultant
explained she could eat so much food without limitation, weighing or measuring &
still enjoy her favourite foods like chocolates, sweets & biscuits without ever feeling
guilty.

She was blown away at her first weigh in when she was told she had lost 8lbs.
From that moment she realised that she could eat, enjoy life & lose weight without
ever feeling guilty.

In group she learned how easy it was to adapt & prepare all her family favourites
like Roast Beef & all the trimmings, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Curries & even Burger &
Chips. She was amazed she could eat as much if not more than before, & even
have chocolate every day whilst still losing weight. The whole family eat much
more healthily as a result as Lorraine cooks the same meals for everyone including
her baby daughter.

Since losing the weight Lorraine has much more confidence & energy meaning she
can run around with her children & ensure they are more active by walking the 4
miles daily on the school runs.

Recently on a day out to a theme park Lorraine was
thrilled that she was able to fully participate in the family
fun without the fear of getting stuck, being too heavy or
the safety harness not fitting round her on any of the rides.

Lorraine is relaunching the Bowthorpe Slimming World
Group held every Thursday at St Michael's Middle School,
Astley Road, Chapel Break 5:30pm & 7:30pm .For more

The children and staff have

and had an amazing time.
