ENTREPRENEURSHIP Debate:
Good evening Sir, Classmates. The topic for our debate is:
Entrepreneurs are Gablers
I on the afrmative side believes that this statement is true.
Tonight as the afrmative speaker I will be talking to ou about
!ntrepreneurs are risk"takers like gamblers
Goals of an entrepreneur and of a gambler
# $rst point is %&re entrepreneurs gamblers'( I think how ou answer
this )uestion has everthing to do with how ou de$ne %entrepreneur' and
how ou de$ne %gambler,' so let*s start there. The simplest de$nition of an
entrepreneur is %someone who looks for business opportunities and invests
time, mone and+or other resources to take advantage of those
opportunities'. ,ow, a %gambler,' is someone who places bets, hoping to
win b chance, usuall against the odds. -hat is common of the two is that
b nature, entrepreneurs must also be gamblers, who most often times will
face various tpes of risks. In short, entrepreneurs are risk"takers, right( &
proper entrepreneur removes virtuall all risk that the can and that means
the risk of re.ection. & gambler basicall will sa, /if ou promote this, it will
sell*. &n entrepreneur sas, /if ou open the door, this will sell itself*. The
di0erence is so subtle that the probabilit of a sale in both scenarios is either
1ero or success. 2urthermore, an entrepreneur knows he or she has to risk
something in the process to determine if there is a market for that particular
idea, be it for a product or a service. 3ust like in gambling, a gambler also
faces the risk of losing or winning accompanied b the investment of time,
mone, sociali1ation, entertainment, and+or relief from boredom. These
investments also comprise most of the investments of an entrepreneur or
businessman in putting up a business.
# second point is at the preliminar stage, the goal of an entrepreneur is
not to risk everthing on the idea. The goal should be to limit losses and
ma4imise the resources and its usage so that the entrepreneur can recover
)uickl to $ne"tune the idea or work on it to achieve his ob.ective of being
able to pro$t. 3ust like skilled gamblers, for e4ample poker plaers, the
choose to pla and are able to control both the amount of mone and time
spent in gambling. The patientl wait for the best bet and then tr to win
as much as the can. This is what ou call %ST5&T!G6' which is essential
both in entrepreneurship and gambling. The best gamblers know when to
hold on to their cards and know when to walk awa. It is the same concept
for entrepreneurs. In order to succeed, a businessman doesn*t need to keep
pushing business ideas. The .ust need to $nd one that worked best for
them. 2or e4ample if the competition is $erce and there is less chance to
break into the market then it is high time to fold our cards, get our chips
and walk awa""" mabe transfer to another table where the odds of winning
is to our favour. In business .ust like in gambling, ou need to gain some
wealth for ou to pla the game. 7ecause once ou raise enough resources
then ou e4pand our options to venture into another business and again to
gain something from it 8I am not talking all about mone9, but in gaining
more 8especiall when it comes to mone9 it will ensure the survival, growth,
and pro$tabilit of the enterprise and .ust as well in gambling, winning more
mone is our guarantee in staing on the table and still pla the game to
win more or mabe lose some.
So Sir, Classmates, in conclusion I believe that in most aspects
Entrepreneurs are als! Gablers
Sir 7o)uiren, :adies and Gentlemen, the negative speaker has tried to
tell ou that
This is wrong because
She also said that
This is also wrong because as I e4plained in m points awhile ago
