Vogliamo dare e darci spazio come alternativa.
L'architettura diventa generosa e signicante per gli esseri umani solo se un'estensione gentile e delicata dell'ordine naturale Giancarlo De Carlo 4 40 Lab 2.0 is a project that borns with the meeting of some architecture and engineering students in lecture rooms and by the net, with the purpose of give visibility and importance to all the voices that increase the contemporary architectural panorama but that still struggle to nd someone that care for them. It is not a cultural gathering where only few people can meet and discuss of something abstact. Lab 2.0 summarizes in is name the desire of confront, of make and produce an intellectual and sensorial contribution. It would be a "Laboratory" both as a simply place and as educational center. It is an operative and at the same time reective process, a new way to perceive something preexisting. This editorial project (founded and directed by Architectural and Engineering undergraduates that come from different universities) sets the aim to offer a critical lecture of the prevailing Architecture. We offer a new alternative. A new unilateral vision of the architecture is imposed, made of ashy building that show the fashion of that period, and following some ideas that caused the loss of ethical values of this profession on behalf of the business. The contemporary architecture is not only this. We participate at the transition from the expressive form of the monologue to the dialogue: there aren't only the Archistar. Lab 2.0 want to be the voice of all this. The magazine is formed by heterogeneous columns that, from different view, describe the current architecture pointing out the relation with the other arts: cinema, photography, design, graphics. "Pillars" proposes food for thought by short architectonic monograph. We can't think to understand the contemporary architecture excluding the characters that have activated the process that caused present developments. This section is dedicated to some of leading gure of the architectural panorama and it is a dialogue between past and present. There are still a lot of things that we can learn from big masters. "Writings" is about realized project, it tries to understand the present architecture and the social aspect of who work in this sector. "Ideas" contain the propositions of young people. Is not possible omit in a such current contest this part of the reality full of the revolutionary impulse that today is showed by "ideas" bearer of creativity, values and bravery. "Experiences" focus on the new class of architects that base their operate on the revival of the ethical architectural values and that realize their work in developing countries encouraging "experiences" of cooperation. "Words in comparison" has the purpose a debate with some protagonist of the contemporary architectural panorama. One of the best way for knowing the architecture is confront ourself with who create it. So Lab 2.0 enters in architectural studios for sharing thoughts, arguments, deeds of current architects and for understanding how they shape their ideas. "Books & Bricks" borns from the consideration on the Bruno Munari's words: Each cookbook is a design architectural's manual. A column that doesn't analyse texts, manual and essay anoint by the academicism that characterizes the sector's licterature, but it works for highlighting those books that could be the "bricks" that can build a new critique spirit. "Tecnology and Architecture" starts with the certainty that we usually look without observe the architecture, we have only a overview. So a guide has to play along with the reader, specify the details, highlight the different way of realization, help him to understand the behind-the- scenes-activity of this big stage. A stage made of houses, bridges, cities. Behind a glossy scenic design or a attractive facade, usually there is a tecnology that deserve to be known. INTRODUCTION by Ines Cilenti 5 05 "Future space" is the space devoted to the ideas that can't be only considerated utopian if analysed in a period of tecnological progress like the our. This section born with the aim to identify brilliant ideas that represent the bases of the "future life", with a watchful eye on the border line that divides the genius of a new future idea and the dream of a unattainable activity. "Exploration" composes a plot of the places interlacing feeling and sensation caused by the Architecture. The journey became experience of life when we can feel the identity of the space and became part of it. The magic of each work is strictly joined with its background made of light and shade. By means of the alterations of the urban architecture the place shows its identity for let, who can live it, share in the story that during the time is impressed everywhere. Visit a city teaches more than read its story. "Urban realities" describe the precious variance of the mondial architecture. To born and to study in an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean makes the need of travelling and of knowing other kind of architecture grow. It is the travel's idea. The quarrel between different way of make things gives meaning to this column. The architecture isn't only as a function of the modernity, but also the result of socials circumstances and of the requests of the place where we live. All this parameters dene the heterogeneity of the results in different counties and cities. "Architecture's Notes" wants to engage, in a critique way, "architecture's problems" in other words the serie of issue with the designer takes on. Discuss the architecture's values meaning controll the project's reasons and run it with awareness, in contrast with the attitude of gratuitous highlighted by Igniasi de Sola Morales that accorting to what he says a very large part of the architecture that we build and a signicant part of the teachable one are based on clich that we don't talk about any more, and on some aesthetic and moral decisions that are realized without any critique review. The procedure suggested is the "puzzle" this is the aggregation of different cards that, paing attention to don't leave any vacant place, forms, in the time, an overall view. "Shoots" comes alive from the questions: how can a picture of architecture born? What is behind it? What is his lenguage? The way of thinking at lights and at volumes of an architect isn't different from a photographer one's: the architect starts a dinamic process between his work and the light, whereas the other capture and x it on the lm. Light and perspective are the basis elements of this art form. Connection between photography and architecture exist where the imagine ( in the photography) really creates an imagine able to be inhabit from the man's heart, the architecture is the build, the physical realisation of this abode that as the imagination creates in the world. Giovanni Chiaramonte "Snap-shot" rethink at the photogaphical set of the most famous photographer of the Twentieth Century from Ansel Adams to Henri Cartier-Bresson, for understanding their style, their ideas and identify because they are becaming immortals. A journey in the Photography: the one made of lms, darkrooms, chemicals and paper, the one made of long wait, when the pictures were born into the photographer hands in a little darkroom under a red light. There is a big difference between taking a picture and making a picture. Robert Heinecken "Grafti" is a guide in the elabrate artistic panorama. It starts with the street art and it deals all the artistic trend that work for revolutionize the contemporary art, suggesting new creative perspectives. The magazine's soul is intensify the various sides of a theme like the architectonical design, the different point of view that take part at the contemporary debate tring to give stimulus for reection to everyone that decides to browse this pages. 9 Walking City - Ron Herron Plug in City - Peter Cook 09 SPAZI FUTURIBILI / FUTURE SPACE ARCHIGRAM AND THE MOVING CITIES: GLANCING AT THE FUTURE FROM THE 60S A group of architects with a purpose: abstract communication. The intersection between folk british culture and the condence in new technologies is now put to use in the Society Archigram is a group of London avantgarde designers who had a futuristic impulse, between 1961 and 1974, inspired by architects such as SantElia, Fller and Friedman. They found a periodical with the same name, Archigram, in 1961. It is not a coincidence that the magazine is founded the year Yuri Gagarin becomes the rst human to journey into outer space. This scientic ferment generates an fresh idea of progress in Architecture. Archigram is not a reection on space, it builts a space where life is possible, trough the graphic art, design and comics. We actually nd the creators, acting as super heroes, on the magazines 4th issue cover: Warren Chalk, Peter Cook, Dennis Crompton, David Greene, Mike Webb and Ron Herron. They have the merit for projecting the radical changes in a world wich was in ferment, in the architecture. And so worldwide politics, intellectual ideas of C. Lvi-Strauss and M.Foucalut and Dylan, Beatles, Warhol in the artistic eld, were reected in a wanderer architecture, which was supposed to guide free people thanks to the scientic and techological progress at that time. This dreamers had also inspired architects such as Piano and Rogers for the Centre Pompidou in 1971 and aroused creativity of the architecture Rone Herron, one of the pillars of this group, in his Walking City, elaborates the theory according to which the buildings can form new groups, everywhere, to face the changeable needs of a city. They were bulding able to walk on telescopic paws and to join in order to create always different aggregates of variable cities. This was about real coleopteras colonies, the moving cities. Plug in City, same year, is the Peter Cooks megastructure. It is an agglomerate coming from the re-elaborated version of the machine. The structure is regular, a squared grida t 45 degrees which moves on several tubes. The link between the existing cities is developed trough a monorail path. The projects soul, contrary to the expectations, is not penetrated by the desolation, which usually characterizes serial processes. Going through these projects, the perception you get is of a dja vu: strong and conicting sensations make their way. A step back in time and we see ourselves as children, in the borders of our rooms reading, with the light coming from a small lamp, the meticulous and so real description of a wonderful vehicle: The Nautilus. The years have gone by, the borders have been crossedand we are once again there waiting, with the same desire to descend twenty thousand leagues under the sea. Ferried by Jules Vernes novels we began our journey into unexplored worlds with surprising means. Stories that had the characteristic of bringing together the fantasy of the narration with the plausibility of a scientic point of view; often, anticipating the future and giving the reader, almost always a child, a sensation of adventure and progress, especially by covering him with wonder. Now, a few years later, our adventure continues, but this time it is not Vernes pen whose guiding us. The world of architecture has elaborated these feelings which manifest themselves as cities or single utopistic buildings, giving life to the spirit of this scientic fantasy and interpreting the ideals of a time. It is impossible to remain indifferent in front of imposing and dynamic structures, but at the same time it is easy to remain intimidated and excited by them. These are the emotions that the Pindaric ights are able to arouse inside an adult interlocutor, ights that are not as creative as they seem to be. Words that we have forgotten echo in our minds: To you I am Captain Nemo said the captain and you are the passengers of the Nautilus. We are ready to shove off! 13 VERY LARGE STRUCTURE - Manuel Dominguez VERY LARGE STRUCTURE - Manuel Dominguez 13 SPAZI FUTURIBILI / FUTURE SPACE ERRANT CITIES, SCIENCE FICTION OR NEAR FUTURE? What if the city moves with peopole, rather than people move from city to city? We are talking about small metropolis, the outcome of continuous experimentations which combine utopian visions and ction science. Manuel Dominguez, with the Very Large Structure, designes a moving platform, self-sufcient for what concerns the sustainable energy production: real errant cities, in a few words. Here, Dominguez, is proposing the thesis of his degree dissertation: the production of renewable energy on the same platform, using wind turbis, solar panels and hydrogen plants of energy. While imagining a city moving on huge caterpillars which run along the rails, we might wonder whether the sustainability is actual or not. However, this structure can be dened, with no doubts, visionary, but also theorically possibile. The spanish architecht in this way responds to the population need for moving caused by the nature threat and the continuous search of new resources. Is this really the sustainable answer to the catastrophes due to the climate change and the depletion of natural resources? The necessity to move over projects this cities in a foreseeable future. We might cite the episode Trash of the Titans from the ninth season of the famous animated sit-com The Simpson, which points out this aspect: the city of Springeld, completely inavaded by garbage, moves away: the citizens, hence, can keep on pollute, but in a different place. This system has certainly noble aims, but it leas the humankind to lose its responsibility towards nature, which is profundly connected with the sense of truly belonging to a specic place. This consciousness is, indeed, a distinguishing features of the european city. Our culture is intensely linked to a past which is still able to bind the further developments and, at the same time, to characterize our space, giving a strong and solid identity to it. There is an innate danger in changing constantly: the loss of our sense of belonging to and respect of the places we live in and, consequently, the destruction of our natural resources. The romantic spirit of the idea of feeling at home everywhere must be stressed and appreciated , thought. It slightly recalls Simone Weils Gravity and Grace: << To be deep-rooted in the dearth of a place. [] The world is his home>>. This journey, apparently of the absurd, trough time and space, seems the animated movie by the master Hayao Miyazaki: Howls Moving Castle. A universe where the mechanism cheats reason and appeal to it trough equipments which take us back in the time of paleoindustrial events. Howl lives and travels in his moving castle. He does not belong to - and he does not want to - anyone, escaping from war and reality in order to avoid the responsibility and the grief of the world around him. As the moving castle, this cities risk of belonging to no place and, then, still being feasible, they would not have their own identity, replacing the dialogue with the nature which hosts them with a sort of monologue of contructions, built regarless of the eviroment. Would be possible to accept such a strong eradication, which might cause the loss of our historical heritage, in the european cultural context, always looking into the past and deeply based on it? Without the fear of losing a place we care of, we would not care of it anymore. Hence, the issue is: is it actually impossible to conciliate our romantic spirit of errant pilgrims with the reassuring certaneity of having a place to come back to? 17 Smart student unit-studio Tengbom M-CH - Horden Cherry Lee Haack+Hpfner 17 SCRITTI / WRITINGS MINIMAL FLAT: DO WE NEED SO MUCH SPACE TO LIVE? Indiscriminate consumption of soil inevitably leads us to the critical question: Where will we live when the space is all used up? It was 1978 when the Talking Heads published More songs about buildings and food: this was a musical parody of a society which settles down, builds, exhausts the resources of the eld before moving to the next one. An actual and disquieting metaphor born from the question: how much of this consumption is actually necessary? This theme reoccurs with Diogene, Renzo Piano 6 m# house. Its simplicity recalls to the archetype of a house (four walls and a roof) full of services, self-sufcient and transportable that draws its power from its technological complexity. There are a lot of ats similar to Diogene. Some of them with the same mission: to reduce the consumption impact. An example of this, is the new minimal dwelling of Alek Lisefki, a designer who found in this solution a new, more peaceful and ecofriendly, lifestyle. Others are just the thoughts of a madman, like the Roll It Home, an eco-house which rolls, realized by Karlsruhe University. Anyway all of them aim towards self-sufciency through their minimal size, suitable materials and sustainable technologies. Despite these projects good intentions, the idea of mobility that lies in them, is in contradiction with the idea of a home as a place in which people create their psychological and social roots. We can consider some of these projects as futuristic ideas in terms of the research against the wastefulness, but as real architecture. They are big appliances rather than homes and its difcult to nd in them a real futuristic signicance in a society, which is in a constant battle against the consumption of soil. The missing aspect in the idea of a minimal at is its role in society: a home seen as protected place, like a part of the wider social entity. The small size at has to guarantee a series of requisites: it should be autonomous, ecofriendly and be able to communicate with its surroundings. It should have its own collective character as in the project presented by Linda Camara and Pontus qvist of the Tengbom studio. They managed to put into 10 m# everything the students who cooperated with needed. By doing this, they out a stop to the long corridors of rooms, kitchens and common baths of the old housing buildings for students. The Smart Student Unit contains everything necessary to live, as in the previous projects. The difference is in its small size and simplicity to be assembled. Forms and materials of this project recall to what is known as the northern housing culture, somewhere between between IKEA and Hnsel e Gretel, merging modernity and tradition in a new social experiment. Moreover, a green eld is enough to create an autonomous and collective city thanks to this jewel. More futuristic is the Micro Compact Home (M-CH) which has been developed between London and Munich. It is a cube of 7 m# of steel, aluminium and polyester that looks like a space probe. Yet in this case, the secret is the same: the simplicity of production and its delivery, the same as that of a washing machine. Only that once it is assembled and nished, it looks like a small highly technological and ecological house. Moreover, in this case, the cubic form underlines the possibility to mass-produce and assemble these homes to create more accessible mass market (about 30 000$) areas. The prototype of this area is the O2 Student Village of the Technical University Munich, efcient and functional in its simple geometries. It took three months to produce the Units and some days to nish the campus. Creating new smart spaces can be an answer to this problem. But how do we act on the already existing spaces? Could they be reshaped based on these new needs? By collecting all the existing solutions with creativity and patience an amazing result could be reached. Like in the Tiny House of Graham Hill in Soho, New York, where 37 m# of space are cleverly managed, thanks to a custom-made furnishings. The result is a loft with all the functionality of a 100 m# apartment, complete with everything.
21 Plant - Andrea Bonamore 21 IDEE / IDEAS EXPLOSION IN VILLA DESTE, THE IDEA FOR A NEW ET EXHIBITION HALL IN TIVOLI The proposal of a young student for a museum area in the city of Roman travertine. Sharp forms and complex spaces invade the history Based on the idea by Andrea Bonamore, student of Building Engineering-Architecture of La Sapienza, comes a new proposal for a pavilion in the center of Tivoli, near Rome. The project is located a few hundred meters from the historic Villa d'Este, a World Heritage Site, in an area currently used as a public car park. The young designer looks for a structure that at the same time is not the predominant urban context but not sterile and detached with respect to it. Just by this idea comes the desire to create a building photographing the time in which it is made, a permanent and indelible image that is granted hat is granted to the community. The design process starts with a series of quick and destructive steps: explosions, deviations, strains. The square, basic geometric shape, loses any trace of its origin to develop new ones, not dened in the form but determined in their fuctions. Acute angles alternate with convex edges, splinters of different size and shape mark the space. A chaos which is hibernated and expresses all its power, which engages in the context to bring order and confusion at the same time . A great variety of forms coexists around a central space, the result of the imaginary explosion. The central space, fully glazed, is opposed to the massiveness of the volumes, and their tendency to escape to the outside. The traces of the explosion unexpected could be reread clearly also on the context. The propagating waves dene the areas surrounding public with signs on the ground, green areas and water features. The functional layout in plan is simple and effective, by assigning to each volume a specic but not necessarily unique function. Fluid paths and exible spaces merge with hard and sharp shapes, made of complex geometry. Isvery interestingly the treatment of the facades, whose irregular shapes are tamed by horizontal actions, well legible, of travertine slabs and openings, such as wounds that dene views on the environment. The choice of this stone, the travertine, as cladding material establishes an indissoluble link between the new pavilion and the area of Tivoli, known worldwide for its quarries of travertine marble. With great skill the student handles complex transactions and creates an articulated space. Borns a project from contemporary forms, which is in contrast with the old town that surrounds it: an architecture that communicates with the consolidated city, but using different languages and enhancing spatial and identity. 25 Simone Argenti, Guglielmo Armillei, Stefano Ciprigno 25 IDEE / IDEAS WHAT IS A VIDEOGAME BECAME ARCHITECTURE. Here is how a virtual space, a videogames one, approximates that of architecture. the results? a game-building for the world of games The Tokyo replay center is a home of technological leisure in the center of the Japanese capital. The heaven of the so called OTAKU (manga and anime lovers): that was the quest made by the Archmedium association for his international contest. Certainly challenging, by a creative standpoint, was for the designers the idea of placing their masterpiece in a context such as the one offered by this multicultural and ever-growthing metropolis, that maybe more than others portrays todays contemporaneity. The interpretation of the theme was willingly provocative, of great impact, irreverent and effective, allowing the students who developed this project, Guglielmo Armillei, Stefano Ciprigno e Simone Argenti, to arise in the nal. A project that surely knows how to embody the feelings of the contest, not so much in the architectural sense as in the potentiality of the idea. Border between real and surreal, architecture in potency: in this embryonal phase, the three designers decided to stop their research. what makes the proposal so interesting isnt the project itself, but the way and the reasons how the contests quest became design operation: the purpose wasnt to produce a real building, but just a concept, an idea. There wasnt a dened architectural idea, we just decided that it must be game building for the world of games [] and also its designing was meant to be a game, and so it was Gugliemo Armillei Fun is the essence itself of this building. Not just in the function, but even in its dynamicity, throughout the revival of super mario bros sets, in the interpretation of nowdays role of tech and computer graphics in our free time. Everything is ltered by the game. As our times demand, young designers tried to synthesize a nostalgic appreciation of the past with a sense of adventure in discovering new connections. A thematic, that of the game, that nd its roots in the past. Someone already said that " Architecture is a matter of art, a phenomenon that arouses emotion [...] masterly, correct and magnicent play of volumes in the light. " It was le Corbusier who, in 1921, consecrated with these words the esprit Nouveau. The innovative push of this project does not lie in the theme itself, but rather in making the subject of the call, not the result to be achieved , but the lines to be adopted in the design . The game was therefore exploited as compositional process that led a virtual space to approximate the real architecture. The spatial complex resulting from simple shapes that are arranged in multiple layers and colored volumes that push forward the faade, bursting into the road nearly to assert its presence, are some of the elements that give this creation of spirit striving towards something achievable. Project blatant in color and proportions, chaotic in its composition, but that nevertheless encloses in what it represents, the hallmark sensitivity of modernity of which we are a part of. Niente paura Cherubino: tutta scena! Cherubino Gambardella 28 28 PAROLE A CONFRONTO / WORDS IN COMPARISON Che cosa signica bellezza democratica? Unultima domanda. His architecture, his images evoke the spirit of the Mediterranean culture in its careful and imperfect details. From here to search the "democratic beauty", rooted in the past and claimed for the rebirth of our cities and landscapes It is said that architecture is a subject whose boundaries ranging from the spoon to the city. To Cherubino Gambardella what is the design, the importance an object can play in man's life? In the houses that I designed I always planned furniture designed by me. These should reect an image of humanity. An example of this is the bookcase I designed for an installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Naples Mother, that bookcase is now here in my studio. I wanted to avoid symmetrical and ordered forms of common bookcase, my goal was to give vitality to the object so that its shape could stimulate a completely customized cataloging of the books. With this istallation the books do not look you sternly, but they are the image of a ow of knowledge, each one with its own dynamism and importance. The force of the design lies in the fact that it is something that can be in something very small, like a spoon, or very larg. What joins objects very different from each other is the creative process. So we come to the city from the spoon. What is youre ideal of city and how is youre ideal city? My ideal city is made from images I have of the city that most impressed me: Rome, New York , and of course Naples, my home town. I think the beauty of every city resides in its ability to tame nature in which it issettled. City and landscape should be a continuous body and Naples is a clear example. I do not believe in theories that involve the construction of a city complete, perfect and immutable. My ideal city is the opposite: a continuous laboratory that deals with revolutionize with minimal actions the entire system. The contemporary city is full, I can not predict an all-encompassing design and I believe that its future lies in knowing how to appreciate and use the innite potential present within its specic reality. Also we should not be afraid of the decrease: the city already contains all the resources for its development, there is no need of further expansions. The architect must be able to recognize these resources and identify a solution; his gure in this sense is not very different from that of the craftsman or even better from that of the tailor who manufactures a bespoke suit . The most important thing in the ideal of the city is to have a propensity to utopia, our task, as architects, is to put the city in a position to express its natural utopian. You are highly respected for youre ability of expression, even in the drawings and collage, expression of youre ideal of democratic beauty, which has led you to exhibit at the MOMA in New York. How important is drowing for youre architecture? My drawings have always been the source from which to draw for all my project ideas. They are a wealth of images essential in the search of form . To get these results you have to be obsessed with drawing, the shapes in the constant repetition become recurrent. Through my drowings I make those images ready, at any moment, to be transformed from an idea to substance, from drawings to architecture. What I want to achieve with my work is the ideal of beauty, not elitist, but open to many: a " democratic beauty ". What does it mean democratic beauty? The beauty has always been something reserved for an elite audience. The step that has to do now the contemporary society is to bring beauty to most people. In the eld of fashion is something that is already happening. Everyone today with a few tens of Euros can buy a dress very similar to a product whose cost is much higher. In this way the distance of the image between the different social realities decrease. In the same way of clothes, this process involve, or, at least, may involve any object. A design accessory, a smartphone, the architecture. Democratic beauty means beauty for everyone. Youre last work, the Blue Houses" in Chiaiano (NA), seems to have been designed as houses in which the resident is free of distorting the plant. Is this the pure expression of democratic beauty? Yes. The Blue Houses were designed as an work open to continuous transformations by their residents and to a constant process of appropriation of space. You just have to think that a lady has placed on his balcony a dozen bird cages ... a true art work. I was fascinated; that lady has found the most beautiful solution to enrich her part of the building. Another example is the fact that all residents have chosen to add white and blue curtains, but there was no directive. The fact that residents feel that their own place and contribute to the growth of its beauty is the greatest satisfaction that he could have. One last question. You are a great friend of the movie director Paolo Sorrentino, are you Jep Gambardella starring of the latest lm The Great Beauty? This is a funny question. For years, I attend my friend Paolo. I still remember when once at his place he told my wife " Be prepared to tolerate the vanity of your husband, I'm doing a movie where he is the main character". I see myself in many characteristics of Jep Gambardella (or vice versa). I remember when there was the Premire in Cannes, and Paolo invited me and my wife, I set off the curiosity of the players and staff. Everyone wanted to know me, the costume designer even came to touch my clothes! [...] I due estremi dellamericanismo di Eisenman sono lEmerson di Each and All e lo E.A. Poe di The Tell-tale Heart. Ne raccoglievo manciate e me le mettevo in tasca. 36 House III (Casa Miller) - 1969-1971, Lakeville, Connecticut Peter Eisenman - House II- foto di Brian Vanden Brink) 36 PILASTRI / PILLARS EISENMAN AND THE REDISCOVERY OF TERRAGNI: CARDBOARD ARCHITECTURE Paper house with a light look, almost immaterial. A melancholic architecture with forms and languages of the past, a play of experiments where the objects of the composition are summarised letting transpire only a deep search of vocabulary and a total absence of context For the rst time, in 1961, the young Peter Eisenman saw a lot of italian Reinassance's masterplaces, but in Como, he had a sort of Joycian revelation, descovering the Casa del Fascio of Giuseppe Terragni, this work more then other masterpieces of modernism seems to t perfectly to his formalist approach: with his complicated geometry based only on formals rules without extern inuences linked with context, and also with constructive sistems and with function. For the 60s and the 70s Eisenman will research a conceptual architecture without external factors, interested more in syntaxt then in semantic of subject. C.Morris and N. Chomsky's studies about langueges of phylophy helped to give substance and thickness to Einsenman's theory; also to the denition of syntax formuled by Morris, according to which syntax is concerned with the combination of marks, aparting from their specic meanings or from the relations between their context, looks as if it summerize the Eisenman's idea of architecture of his time. The architecture is examinated like a text to represent the formal structure of a tale, not for bring the complex of ideological meanings, functional, socials and constructives. His works became the vehicle and not the scope and the project-text theorical foundation is more important then their effective construction. His rst houses are abstract and distant objects, placed on a isotropic and homogeneous tray and on a background absent almost to remember even here Terragni . For this reason, Manfredo Tafuri, talking about the Casa del Fascio writes: Over that analytical work, in Terragnis opinion, theres nothing: no dialog, no message, none noise. The dialog take place into the architectonic writing; it never comes out, it never became critic about the world [] The same relations with the city became, by the way, one of the suspension points. The context exist: Terragni architecture wouldnt modify it. You can nd the same in the rst House of Eisenman: barren hills, uniform and unlimited landscapes; total absence of dialog between an architecture unrelated to its creator and an irrelevant dumb place. Between the 1967 and the 1983, Eisenman projects at about ten houses. Like a musical compositions, the projects have a progressive number and could be divided in cycles. The rst, from the House I to the House IV, join to the formulation of the Cardboard Architecture. These houses would be made of paper, not for the light aspect, almost immaterial, but for emphasize the conceptual substrate and self-referential that generated them. In the House I, and especially in the House II, Eisenman faces the concept of formal nature, originated in his alter ego. Always interested in differences, frictions and oppositions, he is attracted by two works of Terragni, in contrast with one another. Between the Casa del Fascio and the Giuliani-Frigerio, the opposition is based on a different mechanism of stratication that generated. In Casa del Fascio, the process starts from extern (the stereometric shape of the prism) to the interior; a process of extraction and subtraction, operated through geometric carvings of different size and variable depth. The Giuliano-Frigerio, instead, is based on a process of explosion. The stratication doesnt move from outside to inside, but reverse. The result is the momentum of the plans and dynamic volumes that are no longer held back and invade the space. The problem, for a researcher of new tensions like Eisenman, is to work into this difference, into this tensions between abstraction and explosion, between addition and subtraction. The projects of his rst houses become to all intents and purposes essays architecture, whose subject, as in the writings, is purely linguistic. The House II shows the conict of the two opposite works of Terragni. Eisenman resumes from the Casa del Fascio the idea of a square in plan and elevation is compressed in the same ratio of 1/2 used by Terragni. But the semi-cube generated is not stereometrically compact because it is three-dimensionally 37 House I (Casa Barenholtz) - 1967-1968, Princeton, Nueva Jersey 37 modulated in nine squares, putted on an L and left free in the double-height courtyard. This internal world, in the same presence of free parts and dynamic geometry pushes outwards and collides with the frame system that restrains the dynamic pressure exerted by the parties. The outer frame, therefore, no longer denes, as in the Casa del Fascio, geometric carvings on the cube, it becomes an abstract level, a transparent structure left outside to keep the plans and exploding volumes that would eliminate the cage. The solution which Eisenman give to the conict discovered in Terragni has a word: Implosion. An explosion of the wall, plans and volumes, which however does not invade the outside but is directed toward the inside, to itself. A violent chemical reaction is retained and examined in a test tube, an architecture which has become only one language, which explodes on itself. The stratication of the volumes sometimes gets in front sometimes stops showing up as pure excavation. The system that holds and the one that drives out, became in conict with doublings of the structure and with the creation on the two sides of the "L" of interstitial space occupied on a side by the scale and on the other by a free space, a sort of diaphragm to the entire height. The presence of two structural system (one of pillars and the other of dividing walls), in their mingling redundant does not make it possible to distinguish which of the two is statically more relevant and therefore the function of each system seems to signify their lack of function. Even in House III Eisenman starts from a cube divided in three frames. Then he repeats the operation on the contiguous side, creating eighteen squares overall (nine for each oor). Now he puts on a new cube rotated of 45 degrees. The origin of this decision is completely arbitrary, it is not dictated by reasons of any kind, except that of pure experimentation. A conict arises, a tension between these two geometries; the structure became overabundant, double, triple, not to reveal a tension between the two system in contrast like in House II but only as a derivation of the choice that generated it. Also here it is theorized the estrangement of the customer, his being an intruder who enters in a space that does not belong to him. The residents must complete a process of appropriation of an foreign object. Holes in the bedroom oor, stairs that move on the contrary, tables to which you are unable to access. The architecture is no longer a text, but it becomes a solitary card game. The analyzes focus on shape and architectural syntax, and experiments carried out by the Cardboard Architecture, Eisenman allowed to build a bridge to Terragni, to absorb those rules and the language that after the "explosion" of the elusive bridge became fully his , to be applied by opposing processes of decomposition and recomposition in all the works that characterize the mature Eisenman. Talking with the Europe, Eisenman meets Terragni and to dialogs with him, he must use his language. Using literally that: this is the imperative that Eisenman imposes himself; then continues transforming, dissecting, composing, reassembling it[]. Eisenman, writing about Terragni, re-projects him: The book that the American architect dedicates to his father of 20s and 30s is another theoretical poster in support of its architecture without a country, hover over space and time. []The two extremes of Eisenmans americanism are the Emerson Each and All and the E.A. Poe's The Tell-tale Heart. I remember when I was young writes Emerson -, walking along the shore, enchanted me the colors and shapes of shells. I gathered handfuls and put me in your pocket. Back home, I did not nd anything that I had collected: nothing more than lowly snail shells. From what I understood that the composition, the context is more important than the individual forms. On the shore they lay in solidarity with the sky and with the sea. ". The shells she collects Eisenman are the utopias of the European avant-garde: become collector's items, they turn out to be the "poor snail shells" no longer shining in the sun, aphasic. [...] As the tales of Poe, architectures Eisenman are serial in nature: they anagram each other saying their construction and nothing else, repeating to manipulate the letters of the key from which and to which they return, again and again. These words of Manfredo Tafuri simply summarize the essence of Eisenman architecture of the rst period: stateless and anachronistic, melancholic forms and languages of the past, a game of experimentation and cards houses, in which the objects of the composition anagram each other leaving only a deep lexical research and a total lack of content. It is not an hypothesis, nor a whim, but a "solid" reality Pretend that the famous three little pigs were actually four, and that the rst had built a house of paper: the wolf would never come to blow on the straw house. Forget the ephemeral stability of the sheet. Let's focus rather on the unseen moldability of the paper, and here we are, straight to the point. Let's approach this "new material" in three different ways: the sheet as the basic element, the assembling of the paper to the creation of different elements from the (unwieldy) at surface, and nally the complete deconstruction of cellulose and the remodeling phase of geometries functional in a constructive and well dened system. Walking in the Fellows Garden of Kings College, Cambridge, you may run into Cardboard Banquet. At rst sight it seems like a strange origami, a dull shell of alien nature. A closer examination on the other hand will reveal an unsuspected capacity of the pavilion (80 people) and, more interestingly, meticulously made with sheets of cardboard. The designers are two students, Tom Emerson and Max Beckenbauer, who inspired by a workshop with Rentaro Nishimura (aka one of the greatest designers of paper objects) have applied to architecture the versatility of this material. PAPER AS A BRICK - The indissoluble link between architecture and design is visible also in the work of the Draz brothers, who gave birth to a temporary laboratory of more than 2000 square meters only through the use of 550 bales of recycled paper. These bales are not mere agglomerations of paper, but real structural elements capable of withstanding heavy weights. The two German designers have focused on verication of even more technical parameters, such as resistance to atmospheric agents: in this sense materials seem already surprisingly able to withstand rain and are able to dry after a few hours of exposure to the sun. THE STRUCTURE OF PAPER - Of an entirely different type of dough (of paper) is the approach of the well known Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, a name strongly linked to the use of materials such as paper and cardboard. The key to the stability and reliability of the structures lies in the modeling of steady paper forms. Ban realizes a structure of aluminum tubes, then he covers it of cardboard and paper. A conjurer would have pulled the swords from the box in which the assistant is enclosed, showing to the public that he hasn't harmed her. Similarly, Ban pulls the aluminum bars from the structure that, in front of an amazed audience, keeps standing: one supporting skeleton which is stable and durable. The fact that the bars can be reused, is an added value. The water- proof resistance is ensured by the wax coating that is applied to all elements. If you'd like to search through the most amazing structural achievements of the Japanese master, you would nd yourself in trouble because they all have an amazing value. One for them all? The "Library of a Poet" of 1991, a display case of paper for the paper, designed to resist to the great weight of the books themselves. Or you can think to the "Paper Church", built entirely with donated materials, after the earthquake in Kobe in 1995 : a space of 10 for 15 meters covered with a skin of corrugated polycarbonate, supported by a skeleton of cardboard tubes. Other projects such as the Paper Bridge, built near the Pont du Gard in France, demonstrate the good use of paper structures even in civil engineering. If all these projects sound like an echo of a distant, oriental reality, maybe you don't know that the concert hall in the city of L'Aquila, was opened on May the 7 2011. An extreme and rapid stimulus to the recovery of one of the cultural centers of the world music scene, torn apart by the earthquake of 2009. A project that did not remain on paper, it was actually paper that made the project possible. Shigheru Ban was born in Tokyo in 1957. Till today is one of the most inspiring architects of the world, spokesman of a practical architecture done with innovative techniques and materials. For difcult projects he feels the same desire of experimentation that characterize his works for the most demanding clients. He opened his rst ofce in Tokyo in 1985, and today he also has one in in New York and in Paris. After years of teaching and winning several prizes, he received in 2014, the Pritzker prize for architecture. 42 SHIGERU BAN 42 TECNOLOGIA & ARCHITETTURA / TECNOLOGY & ARCHITECTURE Scuola comunitaria Villaggio di Djinindjebougou Emilio e Matteo Caravatti (http://www.emiliocaravatti.it) TRADIZIONE E SVILUPPO SOSTENIBILE: SCUOLE COMUNITARIE NEL MALI Architettura come arte sociale. The Association Aca Bougou, in collaboration with brothers Caravatti, for the last ten years has built public works for the African population In a context that sees occidental designers more and more engaged in deeds for international cooperation, the architects Emilio and Matteo Caravatti have been working for a decade for the achievement of public spaces for the Sub-Sahara population. The community school of N'tyeani is the master plan for a program for the creation of ve primary schools in the villages in the Kat's district, in the Northen part of Mali Republic. The school building is composed of three parts where there are classrooms (9.00 x 7.00 meter). The distortion of the volumes in the map is reached by a curved wall that recalls to the traditional local huts and it gives more identity to each classroom. The porch is useful as an area for group activities or for lessons. With regards to the construction, thin pillars made of iron support the shingle's structure and the masonry, made of brick and raw earth, allow citizens to do easy and independent maintenance work without damaging the stability of the shingle. After the interventions of Djinindjebougou, Kob, Fasira Cor (in the Kat's district too, Mali republic) the connection with the traditional local building process grew. The structure in raw earth acquires a supporting capacity and a revival of the ancient process of the nubian vault contribute to give more identity to an architecture deliberately linked to that area, in terms of shape but also because they are realized with local raw materials autonomously built. These projects test a collaboration process with the local people; conversing with the surrounding environment, with the materials and the local architectural process. The Caravatti brothers, with their projects, research the precision, the simplicity and the repetitiveness in the course of action that allows architecture to not be only a self-serving product. Also sounding-out the role of the designer. Their architecture became an opportunity for a life-laboratory, for the transmission of knowledge, for the economic development of the local community. The architect is a transition gure that insinuates a new idea of space, transmits an architectural process; but in the end it is the community that creates, copies and makes it their own. That is where new business and companies are born, the population autonomously extends schools and builds public facilities. The intrusion of the occidental architect starts an itinerary where the only operating subject is the local community. This architecture is sharing, its interaction and its communication; result of the ability to listen that makes architecture a "social art". The building is like a ower, to plant, to grow; a ower that, if it doesn't nd a suitable eld, lives for a short time and it will not be loved as it should. [...] Too often we only consider its appearance, its shape; but that is something that doesn't go beyond itself. Our sense of belonging must stay in a contest tied to real problem of who needs our act; a physical, geographical but, most of all, social, human context, that of a relationship. "CONTRO L'ARCHITETTURA" BY FRANCO LA CECLA, FOR A PEOPLE-ORIENTED CITY Simple, clear and incisive is La Cecla an essay on characteristics acquired by architecture. An precise digression from a human point of view, from those who live architecture everyday Why did I not become an architect? [...] actually I did become one, but then a bad feeling overcame me, an uneasiness that prevented me from going on, from being an architect, from doing it as a job. With these words the anthropologist Franco La Cecla, starts his incisive and enlightening essay exploring the trends of modern architecture. The title immediately transmits a sense of disappointment and the desire of the writer to judge and explain his perspective on things, inuenced and dictated by his life experiences. The essay is rich with observations based on practical examples: each deduction can be found in everyday life by anyone who is curious enough to examine and question their surroundings. This is the starting point: a scrupulous observation of everyday life. This is especially driven by the anthropological form that the writer gives to each paragraph: architecture is at last seen through the eyes of those who live it every day. In fact, he explains his idea of the current system, analyzing the situation of some big cities, particularly, how their (under)development can be seen as warning for other large cities. And with this coherent and clever digression, he accuses the Archistar, because in his opinion the architect is an artist, but in a new sense, he is mainly a trend-setter [...] he doesn't work for fashion, he becames fashion, so a brand, a logo, a guarantee for that part of the city, a museum, a shop, an island of Dubai as if it was a T-shirt. But, in the opinion of La Cecla, although architecture is so fashionable, it is far from the public interest. He considers towns as deep areas where the common unconscious acts, the place of afnities and conicts. This is why he is against the idea of assigning the transformation of whole section of city to an Archistar, that "take refuge in their artistic value, that excludes them from any responsibility". Too many times the city context is disintegrate and community centers are concentrated in marginal areas with the consequent loss of primary socials centers. In this essay, very complex concepts are illustrated skillfully and understandably. The author's logical thread is clear but it also leaves room for small doubts that encourage curiosity, research and knowledge. So, with each line, the reader is encouraged to stop and think, maybe on his way of seeing, feeling and living the city. The problem is not innovation, but the survival of a glimmer of community. A community balanced by resources and landscapes, is the glimmer of co-citizenship that we need to reinvent in these dangerously violent and intolerant times, here as in Cina and Dubai. 50 Habana Riviera # 2 1957 (LAvana 2012) 50 SCATTI / SNAP-SHOT ARCHI_CUBA IN 40 PICTURES The photographic service by Ana Gloria Salvia enlivened the rooms of PAN/Palazzo delle Arti di Napoli, from March 6th to April 8th Archi_Cuba, Modern Avana, Architecture in pictures, the Maria Savareses exhibition gives the voice to a side of Cuba not really well-known: the pre and post revolutionary aspect, where the Avana architecture dominates. The photographic service by Ana Gloria Salvia, composed of 40 pictures, focuses on the twenthieth century cuban architecture, getting totally the language expressiveness, which has its roots in the modernist style and in the austerity of the soviet architecture of the rst half of 1900s. The photographer starts her research project by observing a majestic building: the FOCSA, which was one of highest ferroconcrete edices at the time of contruction and is still the highest in Cuba with its 121 metres. That was the spark which aroused the artists curiosity and drove her to go more in depth with the issues of cuban architecture, ponderously emerging. It is hard to imagine Cuba without its characteristic colonial architecture, its old cars, the music and the colors on the streets of Avana. Again, is hard to shake the stereotyped idea of a peoples culture off and get all the identities which are actually part of a nation. Showing a different side of Cuba was the real aim the photographer Ana Gloria Salvia. The pictures, then, genuinely represent the volumetric and geometrical effects in the details and the facades of the buildings. The expressiveness is stressed even more by using the black and white effect and, only a few times, the colour effect. There is a costant alternation of rough and rational lines and sinuous and systematic lines, sharing the same geometry, same texture, same weave; the result, in many pictures, is disorienting and still involving in their strong dynamism and vigour, for those who see them. Architecture pictures able to give us back, despite the appearance, the atmosphere of Cuba. We are talking about a project baring the way in which architecture is able to change the life of those who live it and viceversa; able to captivate even the observer in this creative/destructive process. FOCSA / Lenverse de Bach 1954-56 (LAvana 2011) The work, which has started off the research of the french-cuban photographer, expresses such a majesty that seems surreal. The full/empty effects, the geometrical patterns described by the structure and the balustrade, characterise an austere, but still strongly dynamics, building. Habana Riviera # 2 1957 (LAvana 2012) That is one of the most poetic pictures by Ana Gloria Salvia. An image which confuses those who see it, where reality and illusion overlap. The window frame becomes the axis of symmetry where the image of the facade is reected, opening the door to a new spatial conception. The Rivera, in a single photo, turns into a rock or a ship, moving trough the ocean.
