Umberto Galimberti, Psiche e techne: l'uomo nell'et della tecnica 4 Human kind has the chance to make the development sustainable, to make it satisfy the needs of the current generations without compromising the faculty of future generations to answer to their. The concept of sustainability, clearly dened only in 1987 by the Brundtland report, has become the synonymous of development. Sustainable development, far from being a denitive condition of harmony, is rather a process of changing able to make the exploitation of resources, the direction of investments, the orientation of technological advancement and the institutional changes coherent with both the present and future needs. Gro Harlem Brundtland The future needs allowed to transform criticalities and weaknesses in innovative renements. What does sustainable really means? From ancient Greek oikia and latin sustinere this term means to respect home rules where home refers to every situation, ecological system, both on a small or big scale. In its global meaning, the term respect is intended in a dynamic rather than a static sense. A kind of dynamicity born from the dialectic between the ecological and anthropic system. The key role is played by the technological scenery which affects conditions around such a complicated issue. It is possible to afrm that sustainable development is a continuous process which bases its stability on synergy between the economic, environmental and social aspects. When development privileges only one of this aspects, then talking about sustainable development is not possible anymore. Economy exists in society and they coexist only if there is an environment hosting them. Environmental conservation and intergenerational responsibility are the prerequisites for a development in this sense. This is the result emerged from the Rio Conference of 1992. The Sustainable construction is collocated in this frame work This denition indicates a reection of the whole iter which brings to the realization of a project. That is because, as resulted from European research, the construction industry, for the energetic consume and pollution production, is with high environmental impact. A process of that kind entails a work analysis strictly linked to the accommodating territory, because, in order to reach an sustainable architectural model, the local resources should be rationalized. In this sense the architectural research is re-discovering the old materials, completely lost after the introduction of concrete and steel, causing the demise of the relative techniques. That is the case of the revival of the use of materials such as straw, cane, raw earth, bamboo. Precisely the latter is the main character of the current debate. Dened by Oscar Hidalgo the Gods gift, bamboo is a material provided with excellent physical characteristics, which make it resistant to twisting and traction. The relation lightness resistance makes it an outstanding natural product, according to Frei Ottos research this is lighter and stronger than any other existing plant as well as extremely efcient, especially the Gadua angustifolia specie, in xing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and, hence, in ghting greenhouse effect and, consequently, global warming. Mauricio Crdenas Laverde - Bamboo as construction material So, why do we not build everything with bamboo? 5 5 EDITORIAL by Ines Cilenti Someone can sit on a bamboo house, under a bamboo roof, on a chair down at the table made of the same bamboo might cross a hanging bridge entirely made of bamboo, drink water from a bamboo water pipe and wipe his face with a tissue obtained by bamboo ber. Atal Bihari Vajpayee This statement, extremely suggestive, comes from a country where bamboo represents one of the most important resources. In the geographic areas where this is not a native material, though, the economic sustainability would not be respected anymore and the balance allows a system to be sustainable would be lost. This could be an acceptable stance only for a short-term. Considering the current climate changes, the hypothesis of introducing the controlled cultivation of this plant in other countries might come alive. A slow change could be the solution to many problems, even though controlling the growth of bamboo is quite hard. Being a wild plant, the countries which cultivate bamboo are based on monoculture. This unwieldy characteristic hardly coincides with the idea of sustainability and the diffusion seems impossible, at the moment. Bamboo itt is a research published in 2011 where has been presented the idea of bamboo as eco-resource. Is emerged that, besides the lack of a culture of the use of this material even in countries where it is widely spread such as Brazil, this product suffers some limitations: the great deal of amid which makes it susceptible to the attack of insects and funguses, the production and cut which require an appropriate and rare professional skill. Moreover, since it does not tolerate the bending stress, the weak points have to be enforced with the use of concrete. One should not forget the strong idea which lead us to associate this material with a poor architecture in countries where it is spread, and with exotic in countries where it is not. In developing countries this beliefs left an heritage of bamboo architecture only in some construction sectors. In the American area Manizales stands out, a Columbian city known as the cradle of bamboo architecture. Here there are still houses build in 1890 using the specie Guadua Angustifolia. In the European context, on the other hand, bamboo has spread only in the last decade. Precisely, the rst Italian structure entirely made of bamboo is dated to 2003. Is the Vergiate pavilion, in province of Varese, realized by the EMIZZIONIZERO association, taking the cue from the ZERO pavilion build in Hannover. For its installation, because of the inexistence of both Italian and Columbia, on a scale 1:1. In spite of the still regional use, bamboo is an interesting research subject for engineers, architects and botanists all over the world, from Frei Otto to Velez and Renzo Piano. Which such a spread interest? The benets in term of biocompatibility are numerous: fast growth without using pesticides, a high level of absorption of CO2 and strongly resistant to traction and compression. As if that were not enough, the simplicity of recycling the waste, its various use, from the construction industry to biodegradable clothing, and the cheap costs are only a few of the positive elements which might persuade about its diffusion. The problem is: not what we can do with the technical instruments we have ideated, but what the technique can do with us. Umberto Galimberti, Psiche and techne: Man in the age of techique. DOSSIER - ARCHITECTURE & BAMBOO 10 Tabella 1 Confronto tra Bamb e altri legni 1 ( I dati sono presi dallarticolo Il Bamb: una scelta di Ecologia Strutturale di N. Mord, P. Macas, M. Stroscia, P. Bajzelj di DoMo Studio Torino / Datas taked from the article Il Bamb: una scelta di Ecologia Strutturale of N. Mord, P. Macas, M. Stroscia, P. Bajzelj di DoMo Studio Turin THE ZEN AND THE ART OF BUILDING WITH BAMBOO The search of a new sustainable way, re-discover an ancient material, fascinating and exible. A new approach lead the way to an old knowledge At rst contact with the idea of a bamboo structure, the reactions do not vary signicantly: we are all suspicious, uncertain, curious perhaps, but on average, reluctant to believe it "durable". The "Eastern mythology" has cemented in our minds, the bamboo cane as idiom of exibility. For take the distance from our strongholds of stone, steel and concrete, there is only one point to make: if we trust the local wood, then we can also believe in the goodness of a wood so alien but common. On the other hand, some building codes (for instance the Colombian one) already consider bamboo as a material suitable for construction, and it would be strange otherwise, since it is a wood under all the aspects. The incredible hardness of the empty cane seems surreal, as long as we dont understand the reasons for the geometric and physical properties that make it such. The long-necked plant has already been scaffolding, decor, and nishing, and now becomes a fully-edged structure. The properties that make bamboo an excellent eco- sustainable material, are numerous and surprising: it is the plant with the fastest growth in the world, from 20 to 100 centimeters per day, to a height that exceeds 20 meters already in the rst 8 months. It can settle on any type of terrain (that is even a negative trait), and exert a strong stabilizing power thanks to the dense network of rhizomes. An area planted with bamboo, produces 20 times more timber than the same area planted with local vegetation. Last but not least, there is the pleasing effect of the most emission of oxygen than arboreal plants (35% oxygen in more) and carbon dioxide absorption. One of the basic assumption of eco-sustainability is the on- site availability of material. The subtropical zone of the planet, is the home to the most spontaneous growth of the this plant and we know almost one hundred kinds, that give life to more than 1200 species, of which at least 20 suitable for constructive use. Among them, the "guadua angustifolia" is among the most popular and certainly one of the most studied, especially under the prole of the mechanical analysis. An important step for understanding this material is to break free from the idea of brute processing of cane in its natural form. Put it in a context of conventional construction, makes it easy to demonstrate its excellent properties. The aforementioned Colombian normative, which considers the bamboo a complete structural element, indicates 4 years as suitable age for cutting plant; so it is sure to operate in the time interval in which the plant has already reached maturity. It is important to respect these time prescriptions (very short compared to those of other timber) in order to operate with homogeneous materials: In fact, the mechanical properties of the culm (the trunk of the barrel) vary signicantly depending on the geographical and physical growth. The values dened by the endurance tests on bamboo, are comparable to those certied by European standards for the wood of coniferous and deciduous trees (Classes of resistance according to EN 338). In comparison of the data we can see that the bamboo is placed in the medium-high range of Restaurant at Greenville, Jakarta, Indonesia - DSA+s 11 DOSSIER - ARCHITECTURE & BAMBOO Green School, Bali, Indonesia - PT Bambu mechanical properties of timbers from our countries. The comparison becomes even more interesting if we compare the engineered material, the shrub worked in the form of lamellar elements derived from the culms, with its european equivalent. The varied landscape of shrubs from South America, is what the architect Simn Vlez knows best. In Colombia, the plant is so widespread that Vlez uses it as his clay; turns its architecture in woodworking, creating commercial structures, homes, bridges of incredible reach. The surprising use and mastery that results from his works, have made him an ambassador of this technique in the world, and Iglesia sin Religion is a prime example of how the bamboo structure is capable of undermining the "heavier" competitors while meeting the demands of large spans, heights and resistance to natural agents. Another of his works, The bamboo pavilion for the Expo 2000 in Hannover, (made for the Zeri Foundation) is exemplary for the presence in the structure of recycled concrete, pottery, copper and other materials. This mixture doesn't damage the ideal mechanical supremacy of Bamboo, indeed it strengthens the compatibility and versatility, revealing to the world how it is able to communicate with the technologies already known. On the question of the relationship with the other materials, there is also a differentiation in how they operate ligatures. There are two main processes to realize the nodes: one with holes and connections with other materials (it is the colombian case of Velez), the other according to a eastern school of Shigheru Ban, that realize the nodes for tying, without going to affect the structure of its barrel, and keeping most certainly resistant properties. It is a fact that the pure costs of building bamboo structures are really low. However, to work with this material in foreign areas to his nature, we must consider that the biggest expense comes from transportation. We can look to our land, looking for something like this. The legacy of distrust is, among other things, the son of the relationship with the common reed (Arundo donax), which grows wild on the edge of the water courses. Reasons linked to the intimate nature of this material doesn't make it an object eligible for big construction works of as his "cousin" of overseas; Yet, in the light of a pervasive fascination for research (stylistic and functional) of new mechanisms, the common reed is cutting a place in the architectural scene as natural nish with numerous technical capabilities. Exemplary in this regard is the project experience of the association LAN (Laboratory of natural architecture) led by Francesco Poli, which spend time and energy to the study of this material. A recent example (but not the only) of their work is the installation done at the "Fuori salone" of Milan: an open-air structure composed of a skeleton of arches of Arundo donax, anchored to a stand of stone and covered with a mixture of lime and hemp. However, it is unfair to relegate this plant in a narrow eld, without reiterating the historical memory of the Mesopotamian peoples, who still use bundles of reeds (as their ancestors sumerians did), producing remarkable architecture, the mudhif. Arches of bundles of 50 cm in diameter, in addition to smaller bundles, in a tangle structural lightweight and stable, buffered by walls formed by the bers of the same reed. What has been expressed here want to point out a fundamental concept for those who look to the research of the new. A loss material is not always a bad material. The challenge consisted of designing a baboo skyscraper keeping the necessities of a contemporary building approach using this material into account. A contest for the conception of a new type of sustainable sckyscraper which promoted the introduction of an innovative and easily available material, at a low price not only in economic terms but also socially and enviromentally speaking. A contest showing the wide array of technical and aesthetic possibilities of using bamboo as a upholstery in load-bearing structures, which is the starting point for sustainable skyscrapers and constructions. 1rst Place Di Wang, Alexandru Vilcu, Richard Mui - Canada A skyscraper imagined as a portion of the city, vertically overturned. The main streets become trees which have lifts and ight of stairs inside for the vertical distribution. The buildings, which once reached those streets, are now hanging volumes arranged in different levels. The structure is made up of modular units called Tectonic Unit, produced with bamboo canes properly deformed trough the use of vapour. Each Unit provides the planking level, the ceiling and the vertical pillar of distribution. The bamboo canes are linked to each other with elements made of steel. The result is a framework working in the same vein of a traditional concrete structure. What comes out is a complex work, not far, though, from the common idea of a skyscraper, a building which wants to use to the utmost the potentiality of the bamboo as a sctructural material. 2nd Place Beobyeong Park, DongJun Kim, MinSung Kim, SeungGeun Kwak - South Korea This proposal wants to be a home for bamboo made of bamboo and comes from the analysis of its life cycle: from the bud to the coal, the remaining of a re. A vertical greenhouse where is possible to experiment a different use of bamboo depending on its life phases. A futurist shaped building which is still ispired by nature: a mushroom for rainwater harvesting and a series of canes growing around. A structure able to join complex technological and plant design choises and natural forms. 3rd Place Miloslav Olejar, Jakub Lenart, Tomas Boros - Canada A building which has a dialogue with the territory. The communication does not come out from the mere use of bamboo but from the pick of a natural shaped architecure. A hilly structure which buds from the soil and, at the same time, is an extension of it, generated by an apparent telluric movement. The bamboo forest goes trough it, growing inside of it and on the garden terraces. A building able to dissolve the border between inside and outside space: there are no strict vertical walls which identify inside and out. The wood from outside penetrates trough the inside turning into a structural element. A skyscraper which does not want to be a sort of self-referential architecture, mute in the context, but a real element of the eviromental system where it is inserted. translated by Martina Regis 2 Classicato Beobyeong Park + DongJun Kim + MinSung Kim + SeungGeun Kwak - South Korea DOSSIER - ARCHITECTURE & BAMBOO 16 2 ClassicatoBeobyeong Park + DongJun Kim + MinSung Kim + SeungGeun Kwak - South Korea Singapore Bamboo Skyscrapers - DFG Architetti UN FUTURO DI BAMB PER LARCHITETTURA. 19 DOSSIER - ARCHITECTURE & BAMBOO Singapore Bamboo Skyscrapers - DFG Architetti Unultima domanda. Voi avete avviato da alcuni anni uno studio a Roma e a Ragusa. State lavorando molto. DOSSIER - ARCHITECTURE & BAMBOO 20 Singapore Bamboo Skyscrapers - DFG Architetti A FUTURE MADE OF BAMBOO FOR ARCHITECTURE. INTERVIEW WITH DFG ARCHITECTS DFG Architects is a design and research group, founded by Davide Scrofani, Ferdinando Mazza, and Giuseppe Francone, involved in the elds of architecture, city planning, and art. This young team is one of the winners, with a special recognition, of the international architecture competition Singapore Bamboo Skyscrapers, the only Italians to rank in the top thirty. They presented a project born from the observation of the physical and social nature of Singapore, city- state stretched out on an archipelago of 63 islands, ethnic and cultural result of the melting pot of different people. The new bamboo village, for these reasons, is made up of an archipelago of volumes, among which the skyscraper stands out, that open around a water nucleus, the Marina. Buildings made of bamboo, in which bamboo is used as garment and structure. As we know, you came in among the winners for the Singapore Bamboo Skyscrapers contest. How did your planning idea take form? And what are the difculties in approaching a material like bamboo, which is fairly unknown in Italian and occidental tradition? Our project, like all our ideas, was born from the meticulous observation of the context in which the architectural product will be inserted in. The responsibility is such as to dictate a long period of study, from the history of the place, to the climatic-environmental analysis, from the cultural panorama to the technological know- how, form the sociological aspects to the economic trend, from the life style to the architectural traditions. With context, we also evaluate the aspirations of the clients, explicit or implicit, that in this case aimed at a very innovative project that could pave the road to future research and experimentation. For these reasons we have conceived a system of routes, greenery, and buildings that could merge with Singapore's urban fabric and exploit the conditions offered by the site, resolving an important urban vacuum; at the same time we thought of a contemporary, dynamic design that would reect the different characters of the frenetic oriental metropolis. For what concerns the introduction of bamboo, we seized the opportunity to increase our knowledge on this material, looking into its uses (already renowned in oriental architectures, even contemporary ones) in a kind of building with which it is apparently incompatible: the skyscraper. Our research focused on the possibilities of use of bamboo even at a structural level, which was revealed to be the most difcult aspect, bringing us to study its mechanic proprieties, technological details, manufacturing characteristics and the innite morphological and aggregation combinations, without neglecting health, safety and design requirements. The system put-up of these inputs let us achieve something unique and innovative, a cage structural cell, connected through springs to the steel spine of the skyscraper, and combined with others with innite possibilities of aggregation. This idea overtakes the main variable of bamboo, the deterioration in time, that as of now still hasn't been measured, since every single cell can be dismantled and replaced thanks to vertical displacement in the skyscraper nucleus. Can bamboo, like other natural materials (wood, straw, raw earth), really be a starting point for a more sustainable architecture? And, more importantly, how much does the material impact on the form and architectural structure of a work? The materials used impact very much on the shape, some more than others, and they have to be considered from the beginning of the creative process, because each one has its own proprieties and potential, but it also needs certain technological systems and imposes limits on a formal and structural level. The materials on which we turn our attention on today, like straw or clay, have costs, in energy terms, that are substantially less than those of materials used today, but they are still far from our culture and the needed know-how and specialized workers are still not available to us. Bamboo is an incredible material that opens incredible scenarios for the future: it's available in large quantities and at a low cost, thanks to its fast growth: it's robust and light, ideal to build the skeleton of large buildings, even skyscrapers, if combined with a principal steel structure; it's moldable in its growing period to obtain all kinds of curves or to weave it in more stems: it offers the possibility of working it innite ways, even in laminates or panels, and so can be used in any eld, from paving to cladding to design. Many of us believe that bamboo could be one of the protagonists of architecture's future. 21 DOSSIER - ARCHITECTURE & BAMBOO So this has been mainly a chance to grow for you. How important is it to you in the formative path of a young designer, to participate in this kind of initiatives? These competitions are a long-term investment, because they usually don't have prizes that are worth the time invested. This kind of challenges can be very hard and intense, rst of all because you're faced with little known themes, second of all because you have to invest a lot of time in research, but mostly because you have to reach an original idea that can represent a new starting point o simply spar a discussion in the eld. However, the commitment in the research aspect makes better you at your job, more open towards the profession and everyday jobs, keeps the privilege of being part of a community of professionals working on new frontiers and new scenarios of architecture, and represents an opportunity of intellectual and professional growth. Last question. In the last few years you have opened a studio in Rome and one in Ragusa. You're working a lot. Do you really think it's possible to substitute traditional materials (steel, concrete) with natural materials that today are almost unknown? And as a consequence, how much of what you've done for this competition is solid work and how much is just a design exercise? All kinds of innovations meet resistance, more or less strong depending on the market and on the system one wants to change. Bringing innovation, even if it has immediate benets, needs a period of time to insert itself into a complex system of equilibrium, like that of the building market. It is also necessary to start by spreading knowledge and culture among designers and technicians, and have companies that invest in these new material and create technical agencies to dialogue with the designers. It's a slow process in which we believe, and to which we've tried to give our contribution with our research through a visionary design, unrelated to what we know, amplifying to the max creativity and imagination, which is the result of a great creative and intellectual labor. translated by Elisabetta Fiorucci DOSSIER - ARCHITECTURE & BAMBOO 22 Chiara Giuggioli DOSSIER - ARCHITECTURE & BAMBOO 23 FORME CONTEMPORANEE E TECNICHE DELLA TRADIZIONE, LA RISCOPERTA DEL BAMB Dal progetto di tesi di una studentessa di Ingegneria Edile- Architettura della Sapienza di Roma, un viaggio tra tecniche costruttive della tradizione e materiali naturali. The main used materials are bamboo, abundant and versatile Brasilian resource, unfortunately not very exploited, and the earth in adobe form, a material which allows excellent thermo hydrogeometric permormances. Both materials are currently used in Brasil only in rural areas but, considering the systematic utilization in other South American countries and the effortless availability and complete renawability, the young designer wants to stimulate the rediscovery in the building eld. Hustadvika Tools - Rever&Drage 31 SCRITTI / WRITINGS Hustadvika Tools - Rever&Drage HUSTADVIKA TOOLS, A HAVEN IN THE NORWEGIAN FOREST Sustainability becomes a natural thought: Norwegian studio Rever & Drage creates a multifunctional space for those who want to experience nature in a smart way, starting from the most modern renaissance technologies You're in the middle of the Norwegian forest, on a stretch of coastline that brushes the ocean. Nature is so imposing that it dims the senses and intoxicates the spirit. You'd like to make camp, but the weather is not very nice and your thirst for nature demands that you don't seek refuge in steel or concrete buildings. You'd prefer something more natural, a closed shelter, intimate and functional... Maybe even modern. If you thing you're asking for too much, think again, because Rever & Drage have realized something similar. If you think that the shape of a building denes its function, you may nd Hustadvika Tools really confusing. Are you practical and ingenious, with a taste for wood and functionality? Then you'll want to plant your tent as soon as possible. This construction is excellent for a variety of purposes: a harbor for the vexations of the atmospheric conditions, a structure for summer outdoor activities, a depandance for those who like to sleep under the stars, a rest stop for hikers and for spending the evening in the woods. The construction is made up of three structures that surround a small patio, each one of them equipped with a series of gears to make the stories slide and adapt to the weather and the purposes. If you know anything about the northwestern Norwegian coast, you'll know that the weather is very unpredictable: brief downpours, intense sun, wind, sprinkles of snow in winter. The largest of the three components is a box-shaped cabin with a forward-sliding roof that creates a comfortable half-covered space. According to architects Tom Auger, Martin Beverfjord and Eirik Lilledrange, it gives the project a bit of a nod to the activity of Leonardo da Vinci, with his pulleys, strings, sliding parts and counter-weights. The blocks are motionless observatories, but they move and mutate, creating different spaces. The open doors of the lateral wall can protect against the high sun and cold winds. In shielding their effects, they hug the square and create a setting that is intimate, but not visually closed. The walls that face the ocean are made of glass and shelter without obstructing the view. How to respond to the warmer weather, that often brings rain? The invisible roof slides towards the square guided by an internal engine and, when that happens, it uncovers the internal skylight. The attention to planning is evident in this detail: rather than leaving the internal structure exposed to the elements, the glass at the top offers protection and disposes of water, while the covering panel is inclined in the opposite direction to face the wind and the snow. Genuinely regular forms, no ledges, polished surfaces shout at the visitor their contemporary roots, nodding to the more classical taste for wood. The panels are covered to reach the necessary waterproong with the same manner as boats facing rain and salt water. As so often northern architecture reminds us, wood takes different colours according to what kind of light hits it, changing during the day according to the sun's movement. The impregnating resin brings to the forefront the visual depth of wood, and makes the building fascinating in the low sun of the evening. The light gives a feeling of estrangement that could be the product of spirituality. Wooden monoliths brought in middle of nowhere by unknown mystical forces that recall druid monolithic architectures. A romantic addition born from the enchantment that only the air of the northern sea can offer. translated by Elisabetta Fiorucci Hustadvika Tools - Rever&Drage SCRITTI / WRITINGS 32 Hustadvika Tools - Rever&Drage ProjectBlue - Yang Siqi, Zhan Beidi, Zhao Renbo, Zhang Tianshuo - 2014 Skyscraper Competition CITTA VOLANTI: PUO ESSERE DAVVERO QUESTO IL FUTURO? Larchitettura urbana contribuisce attivamente all'inquinamento. Cloud City - Star Wars 35 SPAZI FUTURIBILI / FUTURISTIC SPACES ProjectBlue - 2014 Skyscraper Competition FLYING CITY: MAY IT BE REALLY THE FUTURE? Project Blue: from the assumption of a "Flying umbrella" that can convert air pollution into clean energy to the utopia of city in the clouds We are only at the beginning of the 900 when with the competition for the construction of the rst skyscraper (Chicago Tribune) was offered the opportunity, to the visionaries of the time, to focus their attention on formal aspects, in order to create a prototype that would given way to an aesthetic reassessment of the future concept of city. It created the conditions for a new image of megalopolis. The laissez- faire typical of the era, however, determined an incremental development of the city skyline, ignoring the civic space and destroying the complex nature of social and environmental legacy. Nowadays the great nations pay dearly this intensive development. The urban architecture actively contributes to pollution. The skyscrapers require greater amounts of energy to heat and cool the residents. High concentrations of buildings create hoods of heat, generating high temperatures and reducing air quality. But this which side effect has brought? The development of the city and the increasing resources demand go hand in hand with industrial development. Specically, in countries such as China in which the continuous run to the economic development has led to an enormous and uncontrolled increase in pollution. Whole cities seem hazy and obscured by toxic substances released into the atmosphere. Faced with these scenarios, any solution, even of the most unique and futuristic, must be taken into account. Project Blue is the business card with which chineses architecture students Yang Siqi, Zhan Beidi, Renbo Zhao, Zhang Tianshuo, winners an honorable mention in the "2014 Skyscraper Competition" of eVolo (international architectural magazine) present themselves at the door of fantasy. These designer have designed an hyperstructure, worthy of the best sci- lm, proposing as goal to solve the problem of air pollution. Their idea of turning greenhouse gases into clean energy could be a concrete answer to this problem. The building has a mushroom-shaped structure apparently simple, yet complex in its structural elements. The idea itself was created to give shape to a chemical process of transformation of urban pollution into fuel (methane) . It all t is to convey the greenhouse gases, which are stationed on the city, through a big umbrella membrane. The structure is characterized by a spiral- shaped tubular tower equipped with a system of treatment of hazardous substances. When the elements are combined through a reaction at low pressure, the result that comes out is a mixture of methane: fuel new and ready to use . Now comes the fun part: to help speeding up the process of distribution of methane in individual cities, the structure would be able to move itself. This surprisingly makes it a real aeroboat oating along miles, passing from town to town with not only the purpose to clean up the environment where necessary, but also to preserve the natural resources. Project Blue wants to be innovative, not only for its architectural design, in fact, wants to shape a chemical process of ambiental reclamation. Of curse this is an imaginative and engaging idea, but in which the contribution of technological anked architecture seems to be the revival of the 50 years old progress idea. We are referring to the Archigram group of avant-garde designers active in the 60s and certainly among the rst to devise a new concept of space in motion. Just like them, the designers of Project Blue seem to project the radical changes in architecture of a world and a victim of itself and of their own development, but at the same time open to the future. Everything is driven by a maliconic idea nomadic architecture. "The Flying umbrella" is also a subtle reference to the Plug-in City by Peter Cook with its structure created by the reworking of the concept of the machine. Therefore a car that becomes a necessary product to which man is hypothetically forced to resort to preserve that environment that pollutes himself. From a moral point of view we should at least ask the question of whether to preserve the environment does not exclude live in the city, given the amount of pollution produced. Is it any wonder , then , if an idea so surreal could represent a practical solution to the problem of environmental decay, without this leading to constraints on the development of future living. The image of a habitable structure oating is really fascinating. This utopia tickles the human nature, just think of the cinematic representations of oating cities or to the dream to y that pervades our minds. Probably the very idea of ying gives a ephemeral perception to the concept of living, but even so, it might be a concrete hypotesis for a not too distant future? Analyzing this type of project is almost impossible to remain indifferent to the question. In the 1928 Georgii Krutikov presented a thesis project completely outside of any scheme, provocative for its time, and called it the City of the Future. A ying structure on which move entire communities. The impression one gets from looking at these projects is that of a representation of reality as a utopian manifesto old now, that requires concreteness seen the progress of civilization. A TOWER OF GARBAGE, AS A MONUMENT TO (IN)CIVILITY A vertical landll as a starting point of reection on the urban solid waste management. Every year the city of New York generates a volume of garbage equivalent to three Empire State Buildings Monument to civilization is a landll-tower conceived by two Taiwanese designers, Lin Yu-Ta and Anne Schmidt. With this project, that made them won the third place at the 2012 international competition named eVolo Skyscraper Competition, the two architects offer a starting point to face the problem of urban solid waste management. The idea comes from a terrible image: If we put the garbage produced annually by the city of New York, on a area of a typical tower footprint, we will get a 1,300 m high landll tower, which is about as three times tall as the Empire State Building. The word game that gives the name to the project starts from here: a vertical landll as a monument to modern civilization. Garbage is the result of our daily consumption, the indelible sign that we leave on our planet. Just consider the fact that a plastic bag takes around 1000 years to decompose, more than a reinforced concrete construction. Is this the sign we want to leave on the planet that hosts us? The aim of this monument is not to just give an ironic view on a problem with complex social and environmental implications. Indeed, the two designers seek to provoke discussion about the consumerist and short-sighted lifestyle that characterizes our society. Thereby, they try to give an answer to the problem with an architectural work that operates on an urban level. In fact, the realization of a vertical landll can reduce the environmental impact by occupying a smaller area compared to the traditional landlls. At the same time, by locating it in the heart of the city centre, it is possible to cut the transportation costs of waste. Clearly there is a sustainable approach in this project with several activities taking place in underground areas: sewage disposal, deposit of gases produced by the waste decomposition and the power generation that serves the urban centre. However, the real value of this proposal resides not only in its visionary (though concrete) implications, but also in its symbolic meaning. Generally a skyscraper has always been conceived to amaze, to impress, as an icon of wealth and demonstration of advanced technology. The race for the tallest tower, starting from Taipeis 509 m in Taiwan, arriving at the Burji Khalifas 828 m in Dubai, is replaced by a different idea of skyscraper. The symbolic value of the project is that social progress is not represented by the tallest skyscraper. On the contrary, the shorter is the tower, the more it becomes an expression of sustainable respect of the environment. With this proposal, the common appearance of a landll, i.e. a hole in the ground, in which everyday life waste are buried, becomes a monument, an architectural work to admire: a tangible reminder of what modern society produces and a warning to consume less and recycle more. translated by Isabella Geronzi 39 IDEE / IDEAS IDEE / IDEAS 40 Museo Laberinto de las Ciencia y las Artes GEOMETRIE ASTRATTE E COLORI FORTI, LARCHITETTURA DI RICARDO LEGORRETA Unarchitettura che racconta la vita, i suoni, i colori, la gente messicana. Vedere i suoi edici porta sempre emozioni nuove. Reyes - Caballo PILASTRI / PILLARS 44 Pershing square - New York ABSTRACT GEOMETRIES AND INTENSE COLOURS, THIS IS RICARDO LEGORRETA ARCHITECTURE It is an architecture that describes life, sounds, colours and mexican people. Projects with abstract forms that base their essence on their connection with the territory The work of mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta comes out from the love for Mexico and for spanish colonial architecture (made of simple forms and intense colours). While in the rest of the world the wall is dematerialized to make space to ample windows, Legorreta transforms it in a main element of his architecture. The wall in my works invites walking through all the building outside and inside, inviting to enter, exit and admire the beauty from all its sides. All his works are born from geometrical simple volumes (parallelepipeds, pyramids, cylinders and spheres), around pure forms, out of time. Looking to his building, as Italians, we inevitably come to think about Aldo Rossi. There are a lot of common elements in Legorreta and Aldo Rossi architecture: for example the Televisa Center (Santa Fe, New Messico, USA 1998) with its big angle pillar reminds the Kochstrasse of Berlino and the Visual Art Center (Santa Fe, New Messico, USA 1999) with its serial openings reminds Modena Cemetery. Its also clear the link with some works of the italian seventies architecture: the arcades, the pure forms, the serial openings, the use of light. There are also some analogies with the colonnades of Aymonino in Gallarate as well as the students house of Grassi. What distinguishes Legorreta is the use of the intense, deep, bright colour that prevails and characterizes his architecture. Between the recurring elements of Legorreta architecture we cant ignore the water. Inside the patios there is always a pool, a fountain that recalls the mexican colonial architecture. Legorreta sees the water as able to give depth to the space, generating reections and light trick on the surfaces that surround it. His works have to be discovered a little at a time and everytime in a different way. Looking at his buildings always brings new emotions. The beauty of the nature and human being cant be described all at once. And when this happens it loses its enchantement. The same is for architecture. Legorreta architecture root is the inspiration. Inspiration means breathing, assimilating the spirit of a place, of a person, of a fact.. which means, for Legorreta, like attaining from traditional architecture and from the language of rural mexican constructions. When he visits the countryside, the rural areas, he assimilates the spirit of these places. It doesnt seem that Legorreta started with an analytical study of vernacular construction; on the contrary his work is born from an intuitive knowledge generated by the mexican life integration. The architect tells that he spent the early years of his study reproducing arcades, columns, portals, but in his works the love for the traditional architecture is not based on the forms but on the principles and the use of spaces. Legorreta researchs the root Fbrica Renault - Gmez Palacios, Durango, 1985 45 PILASTRI / PILLARS Fbrica Renault - Gmez Palacios, Durango, 1985 of traditional architecture, he is not satised by the fruit which he believes changing with the time. The root remains and it is there that the sense of architecture has to be researched. The vernacular architecture holds a mistery and gives quality and intimacy; it is free from rules and it has a sense of spontaneity which is difcult to transfer or explain, but the architect can imagine it and shape it in a drawing as these emotions have entered into himself. The work of the painter J.C.Reyes has been decisive in helping him appreciate the beauty and the vitality of the compositions, the style and the mexican colours. In Reyes painting a direct method is noticeable, without preciosity or artefact. Lightness, happiness, freedom are the only rules of Reyes painting, but also those of the mexican culture. Legorreta gets them, takes possession of them and transforms them in architecture. The desert area, nearby Gomez Palacio, Messico, where the Renault factory is located, suggested the form of this structure allowing to see the desert extension. The city wall is short and looks like endless, in front of the wall a series of rectangular nodding panels emphasize the sense of innite. On another wall, located inside, are placed a series of square openings that, jutting lightly out, make shadows games. In this building, walls have the role of marking and scanning the spaces, protecting from sun and making a sort of box in which all the geometric shapes, used by Legorreta, are contained. The integration with the landscape disappears if we go inside the building, where used colours (like blu, yellow, red) and the courtyards with fountains and small lakes, create a fresh atmosphere that makes contrast with the stark and extreme atmosphere of the exterior. I bumped into the desert and the walls that never end. I didnt want to soften this emotion, so instead of placing ornamental plants in an open eld, I covered the site with pebbles and instead of a subtle colour I decided to use red. I didnt wish to ght against desert, I wished we completed each other. Pershing Square is a Los Angeles park, redesigned by Legorreta with the landscape architect Hanna Olin. The space is articulated by a series of right-angles which dene the square and that identify the inferior portal of an aqueduct. The place is dominated by a tower with a spherical bell. Here too, water has an essential role, owing on the arcades and falling then in a circular source which gives form to the square. The whole area is divided in small areas separated and articulated by walls, ramps and stairs that make intimate spaces different each other in form and size. A dialog between natural and human landscape, between "living places" and those that are "abandoned", based on monumental architecture Beniamino Servino deals with what he calls the places of abandonment: places no one cares about, places left to themselves, at the mercy of illegal buildings and clumsy forms. His civil commitment led him to dedicate his work to the redemption of these places through the design of a monumental architecture whose iconographic characteristics are typical of his work area. His architecture is not intended to erase abuses, but to give them new life rewriting them. This implies an unceasing investigation and elaboration of well-known forms which already exist in landscapes and in folk memory. In this way every mark that will be traced is an opportunity to state an identity which is intrinsic to the territory itself. A mark whose potential exclusively depends on its design features and which dissociates itself from " hypocrite" attempts to rehabilitate our landscape, since only a good architecture can establish a dialog between natural and human landscape , between "living places" and those that are "abandoned". To achieve this aim, it is necessary to write and rewrite persistent shapes; therefore, studying these archetypical forms, he reaches a new architectural conguration able to restore the lost relationship with society. The objects he works with, in this process of knowledge and rewriting, are, for instance silos, skeletons of reinforced concrete buildings, industries fallen into disuse. Elements whose recognition is borne out by folk memory. Constructions that mark the places of abandonment and that will save, in their new monumental expression, our territory. This input will be followed by corruption", deterioration, encrustation and alteration of the form. An open work in constant mutation or, using Servinos words, in constant "Translation - Tradition - Treachery". With Monumental Need and Obvious, Beniamino Servino writes a manifesto, establishing a new order in contemporary architecture. His tone is that of a healthy civil revolution; his designs: works of art like weapons to demonstrate the power of his ideas. As the chronicle of ancient history that has been perpetuated and enriched as time goes by, can we say that memory and stratication are at the core of your search of architectural beauty? Our memory stores a collection of images continuously developing [transformation / modication / adjustment] through a dynamic process. Thinking of deleting it [thinking of drawing on a blank page] is a misbelief; it means that we eliminate the tools for the construction of thought. Beauty lies between familiarity and wonder. Familiarity is the ease [the comfort] of known things and the attribution of symbolic values to them. The wonder is "the framework" in which known things challenge themselves still preserving the possibility to be recognized. The range between familiarity and wonder is dened by very individual standards. 51 PAROLE A CONFRONTO / WORDS IN COMPARISON Your drawings clearly show your research and the operation writing and rewriting of our territory and architectural forms. You enter lands cut off from society, abandoned, and try to repair this gap. Monumental architecture for people. How do "your" architectural forms come to the world? And how do you reach your ideal of Monumental Need? Monumental refers not only to size but especially to memory. At this point memory returns; and several similar memories equal a folk memory. The city and the landscape of abandonment are the places of unfamiliarity. Monumental Need produces the tools to recognize places. Its Need for awareness for a dialogue between social and physical parts, for a new balance between them. There is an iconographic code that each person processes to identify personal, group and mass customs. It is a sort of map that allows us to use a place. Losing this map means to abstract ourselves. Our interaction with places is the opposite of abstraction. Interaction produces deference. Archetypes are the foundation of everybodys lexicon. And everyone tampers with them. The operation of individual tampering with the archetypes stops before reaching the limit beyond which they are no longer recognizable. Is it possible to extend the application of these concepts, strongly rooted in a specic territory, to any kind of reality and therefore to extract a method? And how would the autobiographical inuence affect it? Yes, you can extend it to any reality. Autobiography is a way to approach things which focuses on the person, not on the discipline. I love buildings which talk about their creator. Architecture always speaks its creators language. It is wonderful to recognize the language, the inection. It's an original production versus the dullness of dubbing. What do you think about sustainable architecture? Who or what Servn le Vert is? LANDSCAPE? I DONT GIVE A DAMN! Servn le Vert is a manifesto against the clichs of the standardization of sustainability. Landscape is the place of mutual respect, autonomy, peculiarity. Avoiding the miserable operations of dissimulation, mimesis, afnity, and adequacy. The design neither interprets nor includes a place. It operates in that place. Its good or bad outcome does not depend on the good or bad interpretation or comprehension of the site. It depends on the form of the architectural object. In your buildings the executive, technological and material component is particularly important. Your assembly work aims at an effective lexicon in which every part of the building has its own identity, and that is still able to give a uniform perception of spaces. What motivation lies behind this specic architectonical language? Language is the result of an accumulation / selection of words we use to sharpen our thoughts. Language gives shape to the thought built by words. It is a genetic code. Hereditary. Familiar. Language provides architecture with a father and a mother. To refuse language would mean to deny architectural form. Surely particular and interesting but maybe difcult to totally appreciate it. Against of instrumentally sectorial visions I think that was indispensable reexamine and comparing with the architecture, word like landscape, tecnique, engineering, area. An excuse. This is the Linear Park for his designer and also the writer of the book, Marco Navarra. An alternative incipit, on the borderline between justication and warnig reffering to the subjects developped and to the slant of the treatise. What is it the Linear Park? The project borns in the 90's in Sicily, between Caltagirone e San Michele di Gonzaga (CT), and it identies a "light infrastructure" of 14 Kilometres that introduces a nature trail in an area composed by a railway and other abandoned works, that thanks to this project have rediscovered their utility. It isn't only a green corridor or a simply cycling lane appeared in that contest, but a connection element both physical and abstract among different factors (cultural, economical, architectonical/urban and social) that consist in maintenance and safeguard of the territory with new activities and new forms of tourism, at the service of the local people. An ambitious and innovative project, that could have been a new "modus operandi" for facing problems of revitlization of the disued spaces, becaming as a sort of "model to reproduce" in the design panorama. But this is not how things are, and this pushed Navarra to declare his "forswear of the landscape". Upfront, even in the frists chapters, with trenchant paragraphs and sharps phrases, he explains his stance on in a very determined way. A bitterness sensation penetrates the reader that immerse himself into this pamphlet, because the writer criticizes energetically and with biting words, but maybe in a excessive generic way, everyone who didn't understand his project or that "wanted to kill the Linear Park". It seems a pretension of superiority, but maybe is simply a rm belief and trust in owm project, belive in own ideas also when we are alone. And it is what stimulate the desire to read the text: want to try to understand where his anguish came from. We get, between the lines, the will of perceive a designer "outside the box" on the destiny that expects him. This isn't a fruitless debate. At the specify description of his Linear Park, of the initial idea of development that he had, he anks the aspect that we didn't perceived or that had been confused by the not very clear logics that often ank "the ideas when become reality". In the exact moment that we are accountable of this, we can totally appreciate the book and we can amost understand his mood, between rage and sorrow. The Linear Park is the construction of an obstacle for forcing to look, for restarting to think" Navarra says. He isn't the victim bu he is a witness: with impartial depositions and reals events he reports the crime, by now ordinary, of the abuse of the words like landscape, design, green sustainability etc., words that he indicates meaningless, a cure-all for every problem. In effect eh afrms that is essential replace "the word "property" that refers to relentlessly to his originally meaning of economical price and good. We have to nd an other meaning that express a new energy and that releases us from the deplorable duty to make productive anythings. From the planning point of view, the Linear Park is a project that born from the detail and found itself on little constructives particulars frequently invisibles, that contain themself the landscape. Fittingly he asks to himself " how are the details of landscape maden?". He deprives of meaning the project and architectural scales plead for a their compleate interconnection. So, l ruins and abandoned spaces, he creates a new form of design that could also ll the eternal debate between preserve and reconstruct, co-operating this two things in a only one aim: The Linear Park uses what is existing as a bridge house, a cast from which extract new places. He command a recur to the "nonsense", stopping to considerer a landscape as a text that must communicate something. He has to exit from the uniformity, supporting a divertity that could cause emotions, thoughts, affections. Few pages full of meaning, written in a Pasolinian way, disclose the other chapters of the less "pirate" book. In effect proceed some "fragments", written by the author in different time and way, that are immediatly perceived like a sort of themes's incongruity, and we wonder "what do these have to do with the rest?". Maybe their coherence with the whole work is in the noir atmosphere that they create: few lines form crops of travels, thoughts and dreams, or they are evoked by previous works, all that compose a collage that however is a bit hostile and difcult to appreciate, where is more easy to perceive a particular sensation not totally decipherable. The Linear Park is built on the transverse sections, a theory of sections, for taking back the landscape to the compactness of the Eath crust. So, the Linear Park belong to the Earth crust, is the excoriation on its skin. translated by Tania Lepore LIBRI & MATTONI / BOOKS & BRIKS 56 Gerusalemme - Foto di Luca Bonci ESPLORAZIONE / EXPLORATION 57 ARCHITETTURA DEL SILENZIO, VIAGGIO A GERUSALEMME Ripercorriamo i vicoli della citt vecchia no allo Yad Vashem Museum. The pleasing sensation of strolling in the sunset light with the children that simply play tag, no warring of the rest. A journey in the Near East leaves most of all memories made of sensations that have rended particular a singular moment: noises and din, smells and fragrances... Buildings very similar to each other form urban areas, closed like a hedgehog. They are like little monochromatic spots, with the colours of the basalt's claddings of the buildings strewn in the desert and arid landscape, linked by virgin streets and not still bloomy owerbeds. A physical as an ideal closure: from the external everything seems the same in the simplicity of the white stone, as if they want to hide anything under a chasteness and integrity veil. A forced dissimulation as a container that seems a form of defense from any contamination that from the exterior try to meander in the formerly complicated situation of a divided and break country. It's true: also there, at the border of the old city, are rising excrescences of little skyscrapers made of glass that reect the buildings made of bricks and basalt of the old part of the city. It nearly seems a description of the Italy in the early twentieth century, with all the same bricks of the rural villages, where the houses were near for leaving less possibly for entering. So also walking throught the suk reminds the old market where smells, noises and tastes, are mixed in the air. A symbolic architecture, evocative and extraordinarily studied in every smallest detail We get out of the car. After few steps we feel that we aren't in a common place. After a sequence of trilithic portal made of concrete exposed, that divided the parking lot from the area in front of the entrance, we have the sensation that we have crossed the threshold of a holy and unknown place. With reverence we go near it: others trilithics identical at the previous surround the glass facade of the squared building, like a sort of a peripteral temple; we feel small near this calm majesty, as in front of a sleeping giant. Formerly in the hall there is a particular atmosphere, where the serenity is just brushing against a soft buzz that arrived from the caf and from the bookshop in the lower oor. But soon ends: just the time for buying the ticket. When we exit from the plain building, we are on a suspended walkway. An intercession, a testing route for the tourist that at the end of the path sees an anonymous concrete's strip with a strange shape with an unique entrance and a sequence of windows at the top; as a massive cantilever trunk in thin air. This encouraging levity invite to go on. "A memorial and a name", this is the translation (form the Book of Isaiah) of the name of the Jerusalem's museum of the Holocaust, open to the public in 2005 and work of the architect Moshe Safdie. Yad Vashem: words that sound like a swish, full of the memory of an unforgettable part of the last century history. Like if, after that you have said it, all the name of who lived that story came out. When we pass the entrance an awe would hang everyone's head but for the wonder. The building in reality is a gallery: a triangle-shaped prism in exposed concrete long 180 meters, completely bare and dark. The shape reminds clearly the huts of the concentration camp and from that we start to perceive the architecture's tacit importance and eloquence. A particularity stimulates the tourist in his visit: the natural light penetrates from the glass wall that surround all the top of the building and, thanks to the perspective's magic, ends in a break totally illuminated at the end of the gallery. From there the exposition starts and evolves in a series of rooms at the sides of this long hallway, organized in chronological order, where European Jewish's persecution the story is reminded by a obligated zig zag path where you must go in each room. The victims' personal experiences are the museum's essential expositive parameter. Last but not least, there is the " Room of names": a round archive immersed into half-light and a cone made of pictures that raises itself to the light; the shelves, that house over than 2 millions of cards, encircle the observer prompting that there are a lot of dossiers, but a lot of them there aren't too. Those whose is in a mass grave, depicted by a hole digged into the rock exactly under the room. There the silent is overwhelmed... The visit ends with a view of the Jerusalem's city breath- taking panorama. A relief, since this crime's absurdity concern everybody, regardless of any ideology and comparison. Out of the gallery you can continue to other external spaces, in a horror geography that, even if at the sunlight and more feeble than the museum, however is moving, as the Right people's Garden and the Children's Memorial. An architecture that is container and contained, that became symbolic, evocative and extraordinarily studied in each little detail, however being sober and respectfully consecrated to the dramatic aim. translated by Tania Lepore Yad Vashem Holocaust History Museum - Moshe-Safdie ESPLORAZIONE / EXPLORATION 64 La torre PIrelli di Gio Ponti, 1953. Foto Giorgio Casali,Giorgio Casali Fotografo.
Ghirri - Cimitero di Modena di Aldo Rossi 67 SCATTI / SNAP-SHOT Lucien Herve - Unit d'habitation Nantes Rez di LE ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY, THE ART REPRESENTING ART Links and contrasts between photography and architecture. Can we still speak of photography as a tool in the service Architecture? During the last century, photography has had to ght a war that could be called, without risk of excess, of independence. Today, this ght has nally ended with the victory of photography, allowing it to stand like the other arts and no longer to be regarded as a mere means of documentation. But what happens when art represents art? The most natural example is architectural photography. This should be an objective document or artistic expression? As often happens, there is no single answer to this question but, drawing upon the words of Guido Guidi, "there may be a complicity, a relationship, but as there is not landscape, portrait or nude photography so there is not photography of architecture." There are therefore two distinct entities that are complicit: architecture and photography. The depiction, in the instant in which it is stamped, echoes two languages: the one of the photographer through the photography and the one of the architect through architecture. The picture thus has a dual role, the role of "serving" the architecture as a tool for study, analysis or annotation, which overshadows the its intrinsic value, and the role that made of some photos style icons , relative to a period and an artist. The rst is that everyone, not just students and architects, have used and use without pretending to achieve a "good picture", but with the only purpose of study, the second is that allows us to speak of the great architectural photographers as Hevr, Ghirri, Basil, to name a few, who with their property landscapes, the cuts, the asymmetric shots have reinterpreted the architect's vision. Their pictures did not have to understand the real intentions of the architect, they merely portray the alive and dynamic matter as appeared to them. Sometimes the two views coincide. It happened with Aldo Rossi and Ghirri or with Gio Ponti and Giorgio Casali, whose images could portray that matter drawn by the light, just as the architect had conceived, other times the picture will upset the vision creating "new architectures". What the photographer did was reading the same building with a language similar but never the same. The Vitruvian vision that has its roots on the coexistence between utilitas, rmitas and venustas, and according to which the balance between these categories distinguishes a good from a bad architecture, was no longer the yardstick. The photographer only admire how the light came in through the openings or as shadows wrote on the walls. It should be said that Le Corbusier understood immediately the importance of photography "It is able to see the architecture , come and see " he wrote to Herv. The ability to see is given to us by the light, and the light is just the strongest bond between photography and architecture; taking a picture is nothing more than capture on lm, or on a sensor, the light, the same light that creates and generates the space, as says the architect Franco Purini. If the word photography means writing with light, we could say that making architecture is nothing more than model through the light. We can not forget the profound relationship that the two arts have also with the perspective. In the architecture, the perspective is introduced by Brunelleschi, who rewrites the method to represent the city, method used until the thirties and forties, when, with Giuseppe Pagano and Carlo Mollino, was introduces a new method: photography. This series of links and complicity may well be summed up with the thought of Giovanni Chiaramonte: The relationship between photography and architecture exists where the image (of photography) really creates an image that can be inhabited by the heart of man, the architecture is the construction, the physical scene of this house that gradually the imagination of man create in the world. translated by Lucrezia Parboni Arquati Giovanni Chiaramonte SCATTI / SNAP-SHOT 68 Carlo Aymonino, Ingresso nell'edicio a nel quartiere Gallaratese. Tavole Santa Lucia e Maurizio Sacripanti 71 APPUNTI DI ARCHITETTURA / NOTES OF ARCHITECTURE THE DESIGN TO UNDERSTAND AND EXPLORE THE REALITY An investigation over the ways in which the architect explore both his own projects as the whole reality. To be aware that the design is not only a communication tool but a constituent part of Architecture When you draw your intention is to build something that doesn't exist in the reality. Even when you reproduce a real object, your aim is to build a model different from the original. The whole history of painting is a continuous selection and correction of reality, you can say that the condition of the drawing (or its reason for being), of extrapolation from the context in which it is set the original object, makes the representation something separate from the reality. The object painted is something different from the real one, and as taught by Ren Magritte " Ceci n'est pas une pipe", but more precisely it is the representation of a pipe. Even the mistakes are useful because they open to new and unexpected possibilities. Considering the autonomy of the design, you can say that this, in architecture, has a triple value depending on the different circumstances: drawing as a tool of knowledge and understanding of the real, drawing as a tool for research and testing, drawing as a tool for communication and presentation The representation of reality is always conditioned by the observer, as evidences twe ca observe the tables of Saint Lucia that represent nature during Renaissance, in which Jacobello del Fiore classies plant essences, or also the project in which Leonardo investigates the subject in the moment in which it is. Piranesi, in the eighteenth century, completely change the reality he represents, it is proven by the uninhabitable projects of the Forma Urbis where there are no roads, doors and distribution spaces, the impossible spaces of the prisons and the views of Rome totally disproportionate in comparison to the reality. The sketches of the architects of modernity, such as the Carnet de Voyage by Le Corbusier, are an example of how the relationship between design and reality is ltered by the mind which selects and chooses. These sketches are graphic notes that are used to x the memory of places, often accompanied by annotations. During the planning phases the design become a research tool. The preliminary sketches of Picasso's Guernica show that the author is not the holder of an exact truth, but rather show haw the author tries to get closer to it through a series of attempts. The objects gradually take shape, change themselves to express coherently the intentionality of the author. What you can see from the sketches of Guernica is not very different from the artistic process, in which you go on selecting and trying, of architectural design. You shouldnt forget that the purpose of the design is usually communicative. The author expresses concepts through conventional signs which sometimes correspond to real objects, sometimes are abstract. Also the communicative intentions modies the drawing, the author modies the hierarchical rules to bring out one of the possible messages of the work. The design therefore also changes according to the message it conveys, seeking coherence between meaning and signicance. The whole history of art and architecture testies that, as it happen with the disproportions of objects in medieval paintings, for example Giotto. The same happens for the presentations of the projects of Zaha Hadid , Jean Nouvel , that show an indipendent life from the represented projects , and happens for the presentations of Richard Rogers and Massimiliano Fuksas, in which buildings seem to dissolve and sometimes become completely transparent to let the dominant role of the green in the image. The design is therefore a powerful tool, able to focus on certain elements rather than others. The reader of the work, to make a proper analysis, need to split the work in design and project represented. The project may appear weakened or strengthened, and the design will receive a judgment of helping, or not, the message transmission. The design is based on rules that are similar to the ones of other languages: it has a semantics and syntax, it follows rules (hierarchy, coherence and rhythm...), it is developed according to a series of phases (Inventio, Dispositio, Elocutio) but of course it has its own rules (weight, balance and tone...). It is important to underline that anyone who draws, offers a multitude of information to the reader and here comes the importance of control: the author must be able to control as many information as possible between the ones that transmits, because the reader can recive even those unintended. Think of the movie from which you can extrapolate political, narrative, sentimental and others informations. Movies, however, always have a level of randomness (inversely proportional to the quality) that depends for example from the control of the frames. For the cartoons there is a total control, because you start from a blank sheet of paper and so all that is shown is deliberate, determined and wanted. The more the author is able to control the ow of information, the higher is the quality of the work, because is better controlled the uniqueness of the message. The movie of Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino, has an apparent simplicity that is expression of control of the information provided: every scene helps to build the lm's message and nothing is superuous, everything is in its place. The design of the architecture, as determined from the intentionality of the author, also changes depending on the cultural situation, as demonstrated by the parallelism Renaissance- perspective, modernism-axonometric: the epoch in which man is the measure of all things, the view is anthropocentric while it becomes isometric in the epoch of industrustrialization. The design is also a tool to control what Roberto De Rubertis calls "evolutionism in architecture": a theory according to which the darwinian laws (random development of modications and natural selection) are directly applicable in the eld of architecture. By design it is possible to analyze, understand and move inside of this phenomenon. The design, therefore, in addition to being a tool, is a constituent part of the architecture. Banksy - Ghetto 4 life 79 GRAFFITI Banksy - Cameriera GRAFFITI 80 BANSKY, THE STREET ART BETWEEN IRONY AND SOCIAL COMPLAINT In the web age, almost everyone has heard the name of Bansky and his works around the world. But who is Bansky?? And why he is so famous? Who is Bansky? Until the end of 70s, their fans ask themselves this question in vain. About him we have not much sources: according to Daily Mail he would be called Robert Banks, and would be born in Bristol on the 28th of July in 1973. The conditional form is a must when you tolk about Bansky and the web knows it very well. Infact, according to another english journal, the Mail on Sunday, the name Bansky could hide Robin Gunningham, a thiry-ve man from Bristol. The detail that makes this thesis interesting is the photography, taken in Jamaica (where the street artist made some works in 2004), that shows a man, said Robin, while he is bustling furtively with stencil and spray can. Bansky on the other hand wanted to pay tribute to this photo with and ironic self-portrait. Instead, other inuences news sources theorized that behind the name of Bansky would go round two or more people. For example, for a lot of people there must be a link between Bansky and Damien Hirst, one of the most famous and eclectic modern artists. The basis of this argument, there would be the fact that, although the two characters were poles apart, Bansky decided to join (to become a part of) to the ex position organized by Hirst in the Serpentine Gallery in London. Beyond sheer speculation and conspiracy of art, the mystery of identify, however, is only one of many factors that make the street artist Banksys most famous and imitated in the world. From London to San Francisco, from Cisgordania to Italy, infact there are a lot of walls that were covered with his works and his fame and by now he has reached and has exceeded the one of many artists included in the world of conventional art. Sometimes with a satirical background, his works talk about arguments like policy, culture and environment, ethics and the brutality of the war, always trying to instill through a thin vein of humor. His favorite techinique is the stencil, inasmuch as stated by the artist himself is much faster and more efcient to trace without being caught by the police. His guerrillia art, but goes a lot, both in techiniques both in the media used, therefore it is simplistic (reductive) to talk only about street art. Among his most famous works, in addition to the famous Rats, there are, for example, the work done in 2008 on the half ruined houses and adandoned in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, or the Banksys Stonehenge- an installation created entirely with chemical toilets even to now famous Kiosk ( the classic English phone booth) transxed by the pickaxe, presented to the inhabitants of London crumpled on itself and bleeding. Other street artists masterpieces range between sculpture and graphics, such as an ironic reworking of the Queen Elisabeths portait with David Bowie Style or the ribellion of owers that portrays a masked subject intent to put up instead of roses, stones. In August 2005, Banksy created murals murals on the awesome separation wall built by the Israel government in the territories of the Cisgiordania. The characteristics of these murals are real patches, made with the techinique of trompe loeil, that opens several imaginary windows, on landscapes and on the world on the other side of the wall. Even in Italy Bansky has grappled with his art, and in particolar in Naples, where in 2010, at Via Benedetto Croce, he created an image on the wall depicting the ecstasy of St. Teresa di Bermini, holing chips, drink and sandwich, exemplication of a clear condemn of consumerism. Unforunately the work was canceled after a few days and of that remains only few images. The latest campaign launched by the writer goes back a few days ago and strongly attacked the GCHQ, the British Government Agency for Telecommunications involved in a scandal (Datage) on surveillance programs with the US National Security Agency. With sarcasm and irony, just a few blocks from the Headquarters of the Agency, Bansky has competed in a drawing that illustrate three 30s style subjects with dark gray, waterproof and parabes glasses to 81 GRAFFITI Banksy - Cameriera listen to the conversations that are taking place in the telephone booth. This so clear message that doesnt leave space for dubts about the meaning of a complaint by the side of the artist. Social problems, wars are daily bread for Bansky. For example, to support the campaign for Syria, against the ill- treatment of children and to sensitise world leader sto three years from the beginning of the Civil War, is back in action. His now famous girl with balloon for the event she wore a headscarf and was immediately posted on its website, along with animated video. Bansky is famous also for his ability to sneak in the most important museums in tbe world, allowing to hang some of his works alongside the great masterpieces of the past. Often his works remain on display for several days , waiting for someone who notices the intrusion. In that cases, the artist prefers the paintings in a perfect 18th century style, with the addiction of some details completely anachronistic (nobles of the 13th century with spray cans, ladies of the court with gas masks, and paintings smeared with written provocative). His art want to be provocative. It is enough to think that in 2003, during a peace demonstration held in London, has distributed sings written: I do not believe in anything. Im just here for the violence. And one time more in an email sent to the New Yorker magazine last year wrote I had initially decided to try to save the world, but now Im not sure that I like it enough. A closer look Banksy is therefore an anticonfromist character 360 degrees, constantly pointing to the excess, and able, thanks to his expedients to say the least brilliant, to make the artistic street a current recognized and love around the world. The admirers of his genius are so many that his name is now known as the one of Picasso and his works are evaluated for several thousand dollars. It is enough to think that the auction house Bonham has sold its spray- painting on steel for almost 600000 dollars and recently a series of ten of his works was sold for more than 1 million dollars. Bansky is a polyhedral artist who can be talked about without giving to the consumer of his work pairing a name to his face. The only purpose is to learn his art and social battles of which is the mouthpiace. translated by Agnese Oddi GRAFFITI 82
