How to Deal with Someone

Unfriending
To most of us Facebook friendship is
fleeting and borderline meaningless.
But that doesn't mean rejection and
betrayal don't sting when you are
unfriended (which by the way, is not a
real word It's something that stuck on,
just like Facebook itself!).
Getting dumped is horrible, painful, and
guaranteed to happen. And here's is
Sblog's fix on how to handle a
devastating digital breakup.

Factors to consider
It's possible you're really goddamn
annoying on Facebook - lots of stupid
shared "joke pictures," confrontational
political statements, mundane checkins - in which case, who can blame
anyone for unfriending you? You're a
terrible friend. Friends should be
interesting. Why weren't you more
interesting? You brought this upon
yourself, and now everyone is running
away from you. Start being better and
you'll start making friends. That's your
best shot.
But let's say you're just a regular guy
being cool on Facebook - posting the
occasional fun photo, insightful link,
amusing status update, thoughtful
birthday wishes. You manage your
Timeline like a pro! You're a good
person, and a good Facebook Friend.
And, someone still unfriends you. You
have reason to be offended. When
friendship means so, so precious little,
taking the time to click enough to
remove someone from your list of fake
friends is hugely insulting. You're
beneath fake friendship. Someone
doesn't even want to see your name
written down on an LCD screen. You're
repulsive to them. Unfriending on
Facebook is like being kicked out of the

You

cricket team just because you missed

that one catch! But, don't forget:

Unfriending is healthy
It's a normal, perfectly rational thing
people do on Facebook all the time.
Most of your hundreds of Facebook
friends aren't actually your friends,
because it's emotionally impossible for
a single person to have hundreds of
f r i e n d s s i m u l t a n e o u s l y. B e i n g
unfriended might be someone simply
waking up and recognizing the
absurdity Facebook thrusts us into.
They're just attempting to rectify it, using
features built into said social network.
And yet...We're all petty enough to care.

Let it go, but be

weird about it
If it's someone you actually know a
family friend, friend of a friend, some
peripheral talking blob - you probably
shouldn't make a fuss. Particularly, if
they're connected to someone who is
actually important in your life, it's best to
just let the affront slide.
But some day, whenever the two of you
meet in person again, you'll briefly lock
eyes. I know what you did, and you
know what you did. It's a moment of
mutual panic, guilt, and animus. That'll
quickly subside, and you'll go about your
lives. Who knows, maybe you'll both
end up forgetting the whole thing. You
might even friend one another again.
And so the cycle continues.

Call them

Or, if you feel like a fight

the hell out

This part is fun. If you're not really

worried what these people think about

you, publicly expose what they truly

arecruel. Cruel jerks. They'll get their
comeuppance. These unfrienders think
you probably won't even notice, and if
you ever do, you'll be too apathetic or
nervous to say anything about it.
But bringing up the vile act - either online
or in person - will shock them to their
core. They'll be taken aback that you're
enough of a weirdo to bring up a
Facebook unfriending. Watch as they
stammer excuses, stutter, and try to
explain. They'll offer to refriend you. "It
was a mistake! Oh, how did that
happen?" They'll feel bad and weird and
guilty. They'll feel something, which is
better than Facebook's typical
emotional feedback void. Sure, it's
trolling, but it'll make you feel better
without any kind of real moral
transgression. The Internet should
always be making you feel better.
This happened to me last year, when,
after posting about a Facebook bug that
actually revealed who'd defriended you,
one girl I sort of used to know, who'd
recently deleted me, reached out Panic-stricken and ashamed. But I
forgave her - as should you. Now we're
sort of faux-friends again on The Book,
and all is well. If anything, we're closer!
Just remember:
There's nothing wrong with a little
revenge online. The consequences are
so low, the results so ephemeral. What
would've been a hissy fit IRL is as simple
as sending an email. When all that's
required is a slide and tap of the finger
where petty loses the fight against
pettier. You win. And then you can add
the reconciliation to your Timeline as a
Major Life Event!

KC
VOICE OF KINNAIRD
After the success of Pink Rock and KC
Idol, the council of K.C staged the much
awaited Voice of Radio Kinnaird. This
was another milestone achieved by the
council. The student body immersed
themselves in the dazzling world of
music where their own fellows got a
chance to perform and showcase their
exemplary singing talents. It started off
with nerve cracking week of auditions
and recording at radio Kinnaird 97.6.
During the entire week every corner of
KC was echoing with instruments. You
could hear sounds of all types of music
being played.
Like any other competition few lucky girls
managed to squeeze themselves into
the finals. They got that great opportunity
of performing in front of some Junaid
Khan (Call The Band), Gohar
Mumtaz(Jal) and Ali Aftab (of Begairat
Brigade). The event started with the line
"Stay Calm and Enjoy Music". Every
participant gave their best shot to toast
their victory but it ended up with Hafsah
Gillani taking the trophy. Hafsah is a
multi-talented girl, really good at guitars
and singing. The council worked really
hard to organize the event and did an
amazing job. (by mahrukh ghouri)

Earlier this summer, NCA, Rawalpindi

Campus hosted a welcome for the fresh
batch of students that arrived in this year.
Organized by veteran students the event
was packed with performances from all 5
batches. These included slots filled by
the skits society which flawlessly
depicted college culture and highlighted
memorable incidents that had occurred
during the term, as well as by the music
society who melodically captivated the
audience. Highlight of the evening was
definitely both the fashion show which
exhibited recycled "gaga-esque"
creations, modelled on fast paced beats
with choreographed segments inbetween, and the insanely well produced
play "Ali baba baki chor". Though an
adaptation of the folk story the 30 minute
long performance was original and welltimed with its comedy and punch lines, it
was not only well received with a standing
ovation by the entire student body, but
later produced to be performed for the
public at the national library auditorium.
Other performances included an electric
dance performance by the newly formed
dance society, Shutterbug. There were
also other dance performances, one of
which being a dramatic contemporary
piece.

We Are The

Champions
The Pakistan Debating Team recently won the prestigious Karl Popper
Debating Championship in Mexico

A debating competition isn't as

important for most people in our
country, as Pakistan vs. Australia T20 tournament or Aisam-ul-Haq
Qureshi being in the semi-finals of
the US Open. But for those
involved in this great sport and art,
it is of tremendous importance.
Debating in Pakistan is not a main
stream event as such, but one that is
restricted to certain schools and
universities throughout most
major cities. But, the Debating
Society of Pakistan is trying to
change this one step at a time; and
they recently took a major leap
towards achieving this goal by
winning the Karl Popper Debating
Championship (KPDC) in Leon,
Mexico.
The Karl Popper Debating
Championship is one of the largest
high school tournaments in the
world, which is a wing of the
International Debate Education
Association (IDEA). It brings
together teams from all five
continents to debate on a mix of
prepared and impromptu motions
connected to the topic of the Youth
Forum. The tournament features
six preliminary rounds and a break
to octo-finals. The format of the
competition is the Karl Popper
format, which involves two teams
of three speakers. The three
speakers that represented Pakistan

Photography by Mobeen Ansari

and did us proud this year at

tournament were, Ahmed Shujaan,
Z a inab Ham id and A ze em
Liaquat.
Ahmed, Zainab and Azeem have all
been part of the national debating

Ahmed's debating journey and

their KPDC experience.

Ahmed Shujaan, hails from the city

of Sargodha. He moved to Lahore

team for a while now. Each of them

is currently in school, where they
divide up their time between
studying and taking part in as many
debating competitions as they can.
At KPDC they won the final
against South Korea, after 6
p r e l i m i n a r y r o un d s , t hr e e
elimination rounds and the final
round, along with being listed
amongst the top ten speakers of the
tournament.
The Student's Blog Team got in
touch with these driven individuals
and caught up on Zainab and

sometime during his childhood

and has been residing there ever
since. He is currently in his first
year of A' Levels at Aitchison
Colleg e, where he star ting
participating in declamations early
on and moved on to parliamentary
style debating during O' Levels. He
recalls, The contrast between
declamation and parliamentary
style debates made it difficult for
me to cope with the new style
initially. It took me around a year to
get used to the parliamentary
format. Through this transition, I

Ahmed Shujaan

started attending debates camp

regularly and I am grateful to my
coach, Abdullah Tariq Gulzar, who
gave me the chance to speak at such
a platform.
He remembers his first tournament
being at Shahjiwana International
Debating Tournament hosted by
UC. Teamed up with a friend,
Hammad Aslam, Ahmad managed
to reach the finals. He says, After
that tournament, I started speaking
regularly at every chance possible.
In my last year of O' Levels, the
national team was shortlisted from
the under seventeen debating
championship. I was unable to
speak at the nationals, for various
reasons, which is why I wasn't
shortlisted initially. However, the
debating society graciously allowed
my teammates and I to attend the
selection camp. Things worked
out in Ahmed's favor and he was
selected as a reserve speaker for the
team initially. When one of the
national team members dropped
out, he got selected along with
Azeem and Zainab to represent
Pakistan at KPDC.
For Ahmed, the journey from
being selected for the national team
to Mexico was one hell of a ride. He
rememb ers, Mexico wa s a
memorable experience for me, not
only because of the fact that we
won, but also due to all the

wonderful people we met there.

For Azeem, Daniyal and I, the trip
started out as an adventure because
we had to travel to Dubai to get a
visa from the Mexican embassy
there. Fortunately, we got it easily
and from there we planned on
going from London to Mexico. At
the last moment, we found out that
we would not be able to transit at
London, since we didn't have a
transit visa. We were stopped from
the boarding the plan and we spent
the night at Dubai airport, and
were then rerouted to Sao Paulo,
Brazil! After a fourteen hour flight
from Brazil, we took a nine hour
flight to Mexico City and from
there we journeyed for an hour to
Leon. Ahmed remembers their
luggage being lost in one of the
transit flights and they all arrived at
the first round with nothing to
wear. Even their trip back was an
interesting ride, taking them from
Mexico City, Pananma, Rio de
Janeiro, Dubai and finally to
Lahore.
He concludes his experience at
Mexico by saying, Our time in
Mexico was really good. At the end
of the final, even before the
announcement of the result, the
entire hall full of six hundred
people was chanting Pakistan!
Paksitan, which was an incredible
moment. There is no better feeling
in the world, than the feeling which
comes from representing your
nati o n a n d w inn ing at a n
internationa l for um . I felt
extremely proud of my country and
I am honored that I was given this
chance.
Besides debating , Ahmed is
passionate about cricket. My
mother reminds me every now and
then of how the first word that I
spoke as a child was not mom or
dad, but rather bat. So you can tell
that cricket was my passion since
childhood. Currently, he is
focusing on his A' Levels and
playing cricket for his school team.
As far as his future plans and career
go, Ahmed is torn between
studying Law or Economics for his
undergraduate and plans on
debating more before he can go on

to call himself a good debater.

Zainab Hamid
Zainab Hamid was born in
Karachi, Pakistan, before she
moved to Brighton, UK at the age
of three. She lived there until the
age of about ten, and then moved
back to Pakistan and joined
K a r a c h i G r a mm a r S c h o o l .
Currently, Zainab is in eleventh
grade, in her last year of O' Levels.
As far as debating goes, Zainab
started debating almost a year ago.
During Middle School, she hadn't
been very lucky with the debates try
outs, but when she tried out last
year she got into the under
nineteen team as an observer. The
same year, she spoke at the under
seventeen nationals, where she was
ranked as the best speaker. Zainab
recalls this moment as one which
she will never forget during her
debating career. I remember my
very first speech at the preparation
camp before the nationals, which
was not very good. After a while I
got better, and when given the
opportunity in the under seventeen
nationals, I was really able to hone
my skills and managed to get the
best speaker award. Around the
same time, Zainab found out that
the top ten speakers from the
nationals were going to be eligible
to be part of the team that would
represent Pakistan at KPDC.
Zainab recalls her experience at
KPDC saying, My experience at
Mexico made for one of the best
trips of my life. Pakistan had never
sent a team to the world youth
forum, so this was the first time. To
go for the first time, and leave a
mark like we hope we did, is truly
amazing. But, one thing that I will
never forget is the people I met, and
the time I shared with them. We
met people from all over the world,
from Estonia, to Canada, from
Argentina to Eg ypt. Meeting
children from the Tunisian and
Egyptian teams, was definitely an
eye opening experience for me, as I
was able to receive first hand
insight regarding the Arab Spring.
She further adds, We're so happy
we were able to represent our

country. The majority of people

were never really expecting us to do
that well, and so, we feel, in
disproving them, we were able to
clarify a lot of misconceptions
people have about Pakistan. On
one hand we're grateful that we
were able to achieve such success,
but the proudest feeling comes
from the opportunity we had to
represent our country in a good
light. One of the best things was
that we got a lot of support, from a
lot of people at the youth forum,
and that is something we were not
expecting.
After winning the tournament and
the best speaker award, Zainab is
prioritizing to work and do well on
her O' Levels. As far as her long
term career goals go, Zainab is
looking into going towards Law, as
well. She says, Who knows what
may happen in the next few years.
I'm just happy to say that I have a
very supportive family which has
and hopefully always will
encourage me to follow my heart,
and make decisions according to
my own perceptions and feelings.
As far as debating goes, she hope to
keep improving as debating is
something she truly enjoys, and
hopes to seize any opportunity that
comes her way to progress in the
field.
Despite the Debating Society of
Pakistan's success at the recent
KPDC, debating has not made a
mark on conventional Pakistani
forums as yet. Ahmed stats this
problem by saying, I think the
issue with debating in Pakistan is

that its scope is limited to English.

This is a problem that the Debating
Society of Pakistan is trying to solve
by tr ying to host an Urdu
parliamentary style debating
competition, which in my opinion
is a wonderful idea and will help
enti c e m ore y o ung ster s to
parliamentary debates. As soon as
debating escalates in our national
language, and reaches a larger, mass
audience, things can dramatically
change. However, Zainab seems
more hopeful about the issue and
she says, Debating is not just about
standing behind a podium and
reading words of a paper. It is much
more than that. It is about being
able to formulate arguments, make
logical links, and draw conclusions.
It is about team work, as well as
individual character building. It is
something that I believe, is
absolutely vital, and definitely
should be introduced at a national
level. I believe a platform for
debates does exist, even in our
national language, Urdu, it just
needs to be developed and focus
needs to be given to it, if we are to
progress as a country. Debate
stimulates your mind; it teaches
you how to be a person with
opinions.
No matter what the state of the
debating scene in Pakistan is, the
Debating Society of Pakistan has
made us and the rest of the nation
very proud. The Team at Student's
Blog wishes Ahmed, Zainab,
Azeem and the rest of the society
the very best in all their future
endeavors.

And we're not talking about a major life
overhaul. With a few tweaks here and
there, you can get your body looking
and feeling fabulous.
EAT RIGHT
We're all guilty of tucking into convenience
foods but try to resist. Always having something
healthy to hand, such as a piece of fruit, will
reduce the chances of you raiding the biscuit tin
and believe us, your body will thank you for it.
Likewise, when you get home after a long day
and crave fatty foods, get into the habit of
making a sandwich yourself instead.
GET SOCIAL
Need an excuse to see your friends? Medical
studies reveal that hanging out with friends and
having a positive attitude boosts the immune
system, you bounce back from illness more
quickly.

LOVE YOUR BODY

5-A-DAY Munch on the recommended five

portion of fruit and vegetable every day to make
your skin glow and leave you bursting with

GYM WHO? Beat the gym bunnies at their own

game head outside for a run with a friend or

Crimson Waves
By Rida Fatima (PIFD)

After a long and excruciating summer, we are all

looking forward to fall and winter. And, as the weather
changes, so do our wardrobes with the latest fashion
trends Oh, and our favorite one of them all this
season is the crimson craze.
Red has always been huge in the sub-continental
culture, and we are so glad that it's coming back.
Dresses, coats, pants, sweats, scarves, even shalwar
kameez - crimson is the new black this fall. While the
boldest among us will want to rock the rouge head to
toe, subtler dressers can get in on the trend by mixing
in one red garment with more neutral pieces for a
pretty pop of color. Here is how:
The Burgundy Skinny Jeans
Skinnys have been a must have for
years now. And, burgundy is the color
for this season. You can wear them
casually with a t-shirt or a kurta. Or
even pair them up with heels and the
right accessories, to have an outfit to
stand out with!
The Red Sweater Dress You can
never go wrong with a good sweater
dress. Especially a red one! Just pair if
off with the right leggings and boots,
and you are good to go.
The Crimson Kurta Dress We can't
forget traditional clothes this fall/winter
as always. This trendy kurta dress
from Sheep can be a perfect addition
to your fall crimson wardrobe. Sleek
and very in cuts on any kurta dress, in
the right color can add variety and
excitement to your fall/winter
wardrobe.
Shades of Red Nails and Lips Any
shade of red nail polish or lipstick have
never gone out of vogue. What better
time to embrace them all over again
than this fall?
So jump in the sea of crimson waves and have the best
fall, ever!

iPhone 5
Has Arrived!
by Hassaan Khalid - Cardiff Alumni

The Apple iPhone 5 is finally here, with the latest arrival

boasting a 16:9, 4-inch screen, new smaller port, thinner,
lighter design and 4G LTE.
Last year's iPhone 4S always felt like an incremental
upgrade rather than a true step change, although it sold
wonderfully for Apple and brought some interesting
additions. For anyone following the iPhone 5 rumors
over the past year, the iPhone 5 will not bring any major
surprises, with many of the new features expected
including the new dimensions and the improved A6 chip.
The iPhone 5's camera is smaller, hardier and enhanced
by the more powerful chip, and the front-facing camera is
bumped up to a 720p version. Wi-Fi is improved and the
inclusion of 4G is a must have in the current phone world.
But it is the size, design and shape that will win the most
admiring glances. The all glass and aluminum chassis can
claim to be the thinnest smartphone, at 7.6mm 'thin'. The
4-inch screen keeps the retina resolution despite the
added length, which Apple has brought in to make the
iPhone 5 more movie-friendly
In the hand the Apple iPhone 5 certainly feels comfortable.
You can see why Apple decided to keep the width the
same, since it fits the hand nicely just as its
predecessors have. What is perhaps more surprising is
just how much snappier this feels than the iPhone 4S. The
A6 chip clearly has a significant amount more grunt under
its smaller hood but what is surprising is that you can
immediately tell when you use the device alongside its
predecessor.
Practically speaking, this probably isn't enough to make
you want to leave a 4S unless you are a hardcore fan, but it
will convince many iPhone 4 users to stick with the Apple
ecosystem for another generation and you get the
impression that this is goal number one for the company.
Thinner, lighter and more screen were always on the
cards, and the fans' desires are understandable. The
aluminum back plate feels lovely just textured enough to
feel very different from its predecessors and, to our taste,
preferable to the glass.
Given the level of hype around the Apple iPhone 5, it's
almost inevitable that phone itself ends up feeling a little
underwhelming when it is launched, but Apple is a past
master at ticking the boxes, and giving its growing legion
of fans enough to justify an upgrade.

The rules of attraction

(or, How to Make Everyone Want You Bad)

Some people seem to get whoever they want

and starting now, that can be you!
You know how when you're at home getting ready to go somewhere, you
start daydreaming about your entrance? In your head, you're dressed like
you're headed to Lux Style Awards After party the moment you walk
through that front door, every head turns to check you out. Tonight you've
got it going on!
It's a rush to be the center of attention to be a certified magnet. And yeah, it
might seem like some people are just born with it, like they don't even have
to blink to make someone drool. But the truth is, being that person isn't
about looking a certain way or fitting into one narrow definition of sexy. It's
about tapping into the hard and fast rules that draw someone in every
time. With a little advance training in the secret signals everyone responds
to, they'll flock to you!

RULE#1 Send the right signals

RULE #2 Appeal to the senses

You don't have to send a text to make sure your crush

is getting your messages!

Science doesn't like these are proven ways you can

drive your crush wild.

COME TALK TO ME. When your eyes catch your crush's,

avert your gaze after one or two seconds. IT makes you
look a little shy like you're semi-embarrassed that they
caught you looking which will actually make your crush
feel less nervous about approaching you.

Sound Weird but true; when you're having a one-on-one

conversation, talking into the right ear will help you connect
with the side of the brain that controls happiness.
Taste Many people are proven to be attracted to the taste
of cinnamon, so offer to go to Cinnabon or a good old
Italian food place.
Touch Physical contact stimulates oxytocin, a hormone
that puts people at ease. The hands and finger tips are
some of the most sensitive parts of a body, so gently
brushing your crush's hand will literally help you connect!
Sight Guys' brains are more responsive to visual stimuli
than girls' are. So catch some eyes or sights, and make a
big impact.
Smell - The nose is directly tied to the part of the brain that
processes attraction. Just a tip; Vanilla and Lavender are
good turn ons.

I'M REALL INTO YOU. Run your hands through your hair,
but turn your palm outwards towards your crush. This small
tricky gesture makes your body more open, which signals
that you're receptive to their attention. (Just don't overdo it,
or you'll seem fidgety.)
Reader rule
While you are dancing at a mehndi or a party, look
your crush in the eye, smile and raise your eyebrows a
little bit almost like you're inviting them to come
closer. It works like a charm! Rohail Lashari, 21

HIP HOP - RNB

Linkin Park is back with a bang with
their fifth studio album, Living Things.
This album seems more stripped-down
as compared to the alternativeelectronic-rock band's previous
attempts. But, even then Living Things
continues to shine with successful
experiments and classic examples of
the good-old Linkin Park that we all
love. They might just have traded in
their turntables for dub-step beats, but
they still continue to lean on their dark,
edgy side and Chester Bennington's
harrowing hooks along with Mike
Shinoda's hard hitting rhymes. Even
though this album left most us nostalgic
for Hybrid Theory, but it was still a treat
for all the Linkin Park fans out there.

Flo Rida Wild Ones

We all have heard plenty of songs from
the Wild Ones already from the heavy
airplay. But even for an openly poppy,
dance-based rap album, Wild Ones is
an unfulfilling and detached listen. Most
songs seem to feature Flo Rida's raps
as an afterthought, they're usually

swamped by the choruses, and he

never sounds sincere when he's trying
to kick uplifting raps. There seems to be
no natural synergy between the
Floridian's voice and flow, and the

Coke Studio 5
This season Coke Studio came back as
good as ever. While promoting up and
comers like Bohemia, Qayaas and
Uzair Jaswal, they also brought back
featured artists like Meesha Shafi,
Farhad Humayun, Atif Aslam and many
more. As always there was also a fusion
with great traditional artists like, The
Chakwal Group, Hamayoon Khan,
Fareed Ayaz, Abu Muhammad, among
others. With the fifth season, there were
a bunch of hits followed by a few misses
as well. The songs were more
experimental this time around, and
more promising at the same time.
Meesha Shafi's breathe taking version
of Dasht-e-Tanhayi and Atif Aslam's
collaboration with Qayaas on Charkha
Nolakha were the highlight of the
season. Uzair Jaswal and the rest of the
new comers did manage to win over a
new range of audience and established
ground for new comers on such a main
stream platform.

Overload - Ankahi

Maroon 5 is certainly not the band we

fell in love with when Songs About

following the band almost a decade ago
with singles like Harder to Breathe are
no longer in sync with their new music.
But with a completely new direction and

persona this time around. With their melodic
new hit, Ankahi, Overload manages to
deliver a heartfelt message with a new sound
for the Pakistani music scene. The song
focuses on visuals and lyrics; the video has
some mesmerizing backgrounds and moving lyrics like, Awaz kyun dab see
gaye/Aahon maye kyun khamooshian/Keh tou sahi tu ankahi/Azad hai, teri zubaan.
The video also features a first ever appearance by actor Nadeem, along with Navid
Shahzad, Nighat Chudhry and Zainab Ahmed amongst others. The video basically
portrays a journey from darkness to light, a change that our society immensely needs,
with heartwarming features like an end to dhol wars and the comeback of the dying
Shehnayi bands. Over all, it's a tremendous effort by one of our favorite local bands!

Seedling (Lamha)

This Hollywood summer, like most

previous years, was all about super
heroes. Even the American Pie
reunion couldn't get as much hype
as the flying men in extraordinary
costumes. And as far as Bollywood
goes, it was all about macho men
doing astonishing things as well. So
let's take a look at this summer's
highlights and most memorable
films.

The Dark Knight Rises

(Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway,
Joseph Gordon and more)
The Dark Knight Rises was all anyone
could talk about this summer. From its
news breaking first night worldwide to
its early premiere in Pakistan (well,
earlier than the Eid shows at least!)
And, Christopher Nolan's last Batman
film did live up to the expectations. With
that said, some of the sections of the
film are so intoxicating that most of us
labeled it with clichs like pulsepounding or you'll be on the edge of
your seat. Although some thought it
wasn't the most interesting film in the
series, it still was a satisfying ending to
a trilogy that was surprising and
enduring. With stirring writing and
dialogues, and a spectacle of a
soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, The Dark
Knight rises was truly a must watch this
summer.
The Amazing
Spiderman
(Andrew Garfield,
Emma Stone)
The new Spiderman
series still has plenty

been directed by Mansoor Mujahid and stars
Aaminah Sheikh, Mohib Mirza and Gohar
Rasheed. The film was screened at the New
York City International Film Festival and won
two awards. The film itself won the People's
Choice Award for Best Film and Aaminah
Sheikh won the award for Best Actress in a
leading role.
Seedlings (Lamha) revolves around the lives of
three people, bound together by a life changing
accident. It is an intricately woven story of loss,
love, forgiveness and redemption. It further goes on to exploring the terrifying
prospects of piecing together a broken life after a tragedy.

previous trilogy. This is a grittier webslinger saga, led by Peter Parker with
swagger and angst and a tone defined
more by emotional resonance than
wide-eyed wonder. This time around
the Amazing Spiderman seemed a little
less amazing and a little more human,
which somehow made the film more
relatable and engaging for many. We
saw him learn, bleed, bruise and come
slinking home to his Aunt May with a
sheepish self-effacing grin at the end.

SILK by Fawad Khan

The Reluctant
Fundamentalist
So the turning
books into films
formula has been
going strong for
quite some time
now. Very recently,
one of our favorite
local books by
Mohsin Hamid, The Reluctant
Fundamentalist, has been turned into
a feature film that has been receiving
raving reviews at every film festival
screening.
For those of you who haven't read this
gem of a book already, The Reluctant
Fundamentalist is about a young
Pakistani man's, Changez, in a post9/11 identity crisis. Set in the streets of
the old city of Lahore, the story is a
narration of Changez' loss of love and
life in American, in one evening to an
American stranger. Changez recounts
his rise from Ivy League darling to Wall
Street analyst, as well as his love for a
beautiful but troubled woman, their
brief affair serving as a blunt metaphor
for his rapidly evolving relationship
with America itself in the wake of the
September 11 attacks.
Despite some critic's confusion of the
reluctant fundamentalism or the plot of
the story, the film has managed to
receive positive reviews from many at
the Venice and the Toronto Film
Festival:
Time Magazine praised it as a "tense,
thoughtful and truly international" film
that "raises questions meant to test
America's conscience". Variety said
the film "saddles itself with a laborious
narrative structure and half-baked
thriller elements". But the Hollywood
Reporter described it as "a seriousminded film whose politics demand
soul-searching and attention".
For those of you who are not familiar
with Mohsin Hamid or his books (and I
highly doubt there are many), should
hit the book stores for a copy of the
Reluctant Fundamentalist before the
film hits the theaters.

Silk by Fawad Khan was the outfit for this Eid for
all girls out there. Breaking away from the lawn
frenzy, Fawad Khan and his wife, Sadaf Fawad
Khan ventured into ready-to-wear printed and
embroided outfits in silk. The line consists of bright
in season colors, such as yellow, orange,
burgundy, black, pink, violet and more. The entire range is based on trending
fashion statements, such as color blocking, and very young and hip cuts and
silhouettes. Fawad describes the brand in an interview saying; If you look at high
end retail brands in the west it's all about being clean and classy; that's what we
wanted to bring here. Usually, the general practice is to overdo the embellishment
but we concentrate on the material, stitching and the classy look. So if you
haven't gotten your hands on a Silk piece as yet, go to their online store or one of
their three outlets in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad before they run out of the
must have outfit of the year!

Along with these, you'll find funky items like

City Dreams

den Iqbal hails from a small town

from Punjab, called Vehari. She
stayed there until her
Matriculation Exams, in which she did
exceptionally well and managed to score
the highest marks in English from the
Multan Board. Then she got into
Kinnaird College for FSC in Pre-Medical
and she convinced her family to move to
Lahore. Aden's parents wanted her to
pursue a degree in Medical, but her
heart was set on Pakistan Institute of
Fashion and Design (PIFD). She again
convinced her parents to accept her
decision, but unfortunately the
admissions got closed before she could
apply. Aden then decided to take a gap
year which changed her life completely.
She recalls, I had the next 365 days
spared, with no planning and nothing to
do in a city where I had only lived for the
last two years! But God had better plans
for me and I decided to grab each
possibility that came my way. Aden,
randomly decided to send her pictures to
the Nadia Khan Show for their talent
hunt called, This is it, with Emmad
Irfani. Luckily, Aden ended up being the
2nd runner up from the show that was
judged by Ather Shahzad, Umer Sayed,
Batul Rizvi and Emmad Irfani. About the
competition, Aden says, I couldn't
believe when my pictures were on live

TV! I'm glad my parents approved of it. I

mean what parent didn't like the Nadia
Khan Show back then? We stayed at the
Carlton Hotel for a week and it was a
crazy experience. It was my first
exposure to the fashion world, that I got
on my own and it will always remain an
achievement for me. After the talent
hunt, it was all up the ladder for Aden. She
signed with Ather Shahzad and did a
current affairs program on Waqt News,
known as 'Assignment'. She enrolled at
PIFD and is in the second year of doing
