PREFACE
It is impossible to guarantee 100% availability of power at all points in any system, vulnerable
sections can be provided with alternative emergency power supply, thereby avoiding the problems of
power interruption.
This dissertation is an attempt to understand the power backup systems specially the diesel engine
generator. The intentions are to understand the function, application, sizing & installation of such
systems.
AIM
To study the principles, process and skills used in design of electrical services for its safe and suitable
installation and operation in a building also with aesthetical enhancement of built space.
OBJECTIVE
To study various components/ equipments required for distribution & installation.
To understand the design parameters of such systems as well as define their suitability
towards installation.
To study how to determine the electrical energy need with respect to task areas and non task
areas.
To be able to design electrical system in a way that there is some scope left for modification &
further extension in the system.
To understand the importance of electrical protection & safety system.
LIMITATIONS
Technicalities would not be discussed in depth but only for understanding their application
and promoting awareness.
Application in architecture would be dealt in detail rather than the engineering aspects of the
systems.
RATIONALE FOR THE SELECTION OF THE TOPIC
Unlike other curriculum subjects, dissertation has a unique specialty in the fact that it gives ample
liberty to the Researchers explore and expand the knowledge base on a topic he or she chooses to do
his or her research upon. In this case, the researcher has been driven by the following reasons and
concerns while selection of the topic:
Understand the technologies involved and thorough knowledge of the codes governing the
distribution system.
Most of the equipments are working on electricity so it is Important to have proper knowledge
of electrical distribution system for uninterrupted working of these important equipments.
