Description The site is attached to former
industrial/municipal land. The shoreline has
been stabilized in the past with rip rap and
has become overgrown by large vegetation.
Current Condition The rip rap has been
degraded and its erosion has resulted in the
undermining of the fence and concrete
shown.
Applicability to Project - This area of
shoreline is the focus of the City of
Poughkeepsies urban redevelopment efforts
and the selection of a soft shoreline
engineering alternative can serve as a strong
demonstration site.
Special Considerations The slope of the
shoreline under the water line is steep.
Range of Currents - 0 to .9 m/s
Description The shoreline is composed of a shore parallel structure
composed of timber and rock cribbing that serves to protect a park. A
concrete cap lines the top of the structure. Historically a region with
an abundance of vegetated shorelines, these structures were placed in
response to federal navigation channel construction.
Current Condition The structure has collapsed at several locations
and continues to erode away. The concrete severely limits any
vegetation or habit from developing.
Applicability to Project - This type of shoreline protection is the most
commonly engineered structure in the upper region of the Hudson.
Successful implementation can result in much larger scale restoration
efforts throughout the area.
Special Considerations The site is directly adjacent
To a proposed dredge spoil dewatering site in
association with the Hudson PCB remediation
project.
Range of Currents 0 to .6 m/s
Description The shoreline is composed of a shore parallel structure
composed of timber and rock cribbing that serves to protect the shoreline
(same structure type as the Henry Hudson Park). Stability of the shore
needs to be maintained in order to prevent the dredge spoil that has been
placed behind the structure from re-entering the river.
Current Condition The structure has collapsed and or been breached at
several locations, and is continually eroding. The concrete cap severely
limits any vegetation or habit from developing.
Applicability to Project - The site is not accessible to the public like most of
the other sites and by working with a site with different selection criteria it
will serve to show the benefits of a soft engineering alternative purely from
a habitat stand point. Aesthetics will not play a role.
Special Considerations The site is directly adjacent
To a proposed dredge spoil dewatering site in
association with the Hudson PCB remediation
project.
Range of Currents 0 to .6 m/s
