THE COPPER IN ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 7
The latest tranche of awards sponsored by the Copper Development Association (CDA) represents a major swing
towards recognition of significant architectural designs incorporating copper. This move is a response to the
growing use by British architects of copper as a versatile and sustainable material in both contemporary and
traditional architecture.
For the first time, CDA has instigated awards for the best recently completed buildings, anywhere in the world
designed by a UK based architectural practice, incorporating copper roofing, cladding or other external detailing. A
separate award has also been included for recently completed projects demonstrating innovation in a specific area
of particular relevance today. Submitted projects were assessed from drawings and photographs by three judges
from a panel of architects at the forefront of British design: Graeme Sutherland of the Bartlett School of
Architecture, Laurence Bain of Michael Wilford and Partners, and Trevor Clapp of Paskin Kynakides Sands.
Twenty projects were submitted for these awards, including several already critically acclaimed buildings, from
which the following awards were made.
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN -
WINNER
VENUS, LONDON
Replacing a distinctive but tatty light
industrial property at the end of a 19th century terrace,
Venus (named after its garment manufacturer
predecessor) is a unique multi-purpose studio/house
designed by Chance de Silva Architects who overcame
protracted problems with both planners and bankers. The
cascade of copper rolling over a defensive brick ground
floor elevation with watch-tower strip glazing, opening up
the higher level interiors, borrows from Japanese
architecture but also presents a strong, modern
individuality. The architect judges chose it for its
personality, response to its landlocked site, use of
prefabricated elements and sinuous form which could only
be achieved this successfully with copper. Venus was
considered a clear and unanimous winner for these
awards.

DUNDEE CONTEMPORARY
ARTS
Although partially re-using previous brick warehouses,
this is a thoroughly contemporary building which is
central to the cultural reidentification of Dundee. The
use of light to entice visitors into the building and invite
involvement in the activities on offer is central to
Richard Murphy Architects' design philosophy. The
architectural language used throughout is one of
overlapping or "sliding" planes of different - and clearly
identified - materials, of which copper cladding forms an
essential part. The judges recognised this single minded
use of materials, carried through to the end with careful
detailing and enabling compositional excellence to be
achieved, with a Commendation for Architectural
Design.
ARCHITECTURAL
INNOVATION AWARD
GREAT EASTERN HOTEL,
LONDON
Refurbishment of this listed, turn of the century monolith
has had little impact on its exterior - with the exception of
its roofscape which presented a major challenge to
architects Manser Associates. Here, a chaotic mishmash of
one and two storey structures has been replaced with a
unified, copper-clad structure providing up to 3 storey
accommodation -which links the various towers, turrets and
other roof-top features of the original building. The judges
were not only impressed with this innovative handling of a
landmark building but also the utilisation of copper as a
unifying material for cladding, flashings, traditional dormer
windows and the distinctive cylindrical dormers punching
through the mansard form. The use of diagonally laid
copper shingles, acting as a rain screen over a single ply
membrane, was also considered to be an unusual,
contemporary use of this well-established material.
THE JOHN SMITH AWARDS FOR CRAFTSMANSHIP
While recognising the importance of architectural design, CDA believes that it is essential to maintain high standards
of craftsmanship which are central to the traditions of copper in architecture - and which architects continue to rely
upon for the realisation of their designs. Consequently, the John Smith Awards for Craftsmanship continue to
recognise exceptional -workmanship by contractors on recently completed buildings with copper roofs and cladding,
irrespective of their architecture. A separate panel of judges has been selected for this purpose: Terry Atkins, Senior
Plumbing Lecturer at the Oxford College of Further Education, Martin James, Editor of 'Roofing Cladding and
Insulation' and Kean Power, Roofing advisor to CDA.
Six projects were short listed by the judges and visited for detailed inspection, resulting in the following awards.

HOUSE, LONDON
Adjoining a previous Copper Roofing
Awards winner, this project is surmounted by large
curved copper roofs. Again, a bull-nosed eaves line is
maintained with concealed gutters and copper
vertical cladding used for continuity. The judges
considered that a high quality of workmanship by T
R Freeman has been carried throughout the project
with particular care taken over details such as the
curved standing seam hip.

BELL TOWER, BASILDON
This fully glazed, free standing structure is capped
with a curved, tapering copper roof. To achieve this
deceptively simple form, Boss Metals have used
horizontal panels of pre-patinated copper meeting
vertically orientated batten rolls. The judges were
particularly impressed with the care given to detailing
into tight cusps between window heads.
THE COPPER IN ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 8
Looking to the future, CDA will continue to develop the awards for architectural design and is keen to
include examples of overseas projects by British architects and unbuilt projects to be judged from drawings.
Entries are now invited for the next awards which will have the following categories:
Architectural Design Award - Built Projects
Recently completed buildings anywhere in the world designed by a UK based architectural practice,
incorporating copper roofing, cladding or other external detailing.
Architectural Design Award - Unbuilt Projects Design projects incorporating copper externally,
prepared by UK based architects and students of architecture.
Discretionary Innovation Award Recently completed projects demonstrating innovation in
a specific area of particular relevance today.
The John Smith Award for Craftsmanship Recognising exceptional workmanship by contractors on recently
completed copper roofs, irrespective of architectural design.

CRAFTSMANSHIP - WINNER
THORNBURY CENTRE,
BRADFORD
This thoroughly contemporary design by Allan Joyce
Architects includes sinusoidal double curved roofs and
numerous difficult details. A clear, rounded eaves line is
maintained by use of concealed gutters while copper down
pipes and flashings to masonry are incorporated for
continuity of material. The judges considered the quality
and neatness of copper workmanship, carried out by
Longworth Metal Roofing, to be outstanding throughout
all areas of this large, complex project. In particular, they
were impressed with the flatness of copper sheet
maintained on curved surfaces and the elegant execution of
complex details at verge and eaves junctions. The project
was recognised as a clear winner and excellent example of
copper craftsmanship in today's architecture.
